• Character creation using spritesheets

  I am currently creating a 2D fighting game and have implemented a system where upon starting a new game, the player is presented with the option to create a custom character. I have a set of string arrays set with values that correspond to hair, headgear, chest, lower body and shoes. When done selecting a variety of items from the lists, a code is generated based off the index of each item (i.e 01123), which is then used to assign the correct Spritesheet to the player character. This has already presented a lot of work as I have had to create quite a few spreadsheets based of possible combinations, but I am now looking at a massive amount of work to implement each variation. I have started to look into setting layers for each item to reduce workload, but I am also looking at having different stances for the character - Depending on the currently equipped weapon - so this may present a lot of work either way. My question is, do I have any alternatives or am I stuck creating masses of Spritesheets to cover all combinations? As a side note, how much impact will assigning layered items have on overall performance?

  This cleverly designed Portal gun prop levitates a model Companion Cube; the whole setup just begs to be paired with a Halloween costume. Courtesy of Caleb over at Hack A Day: I was out to lunch with a couple friends, brainstorming ideas for fun projects when one of them says “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could build a working gravity gun?”. We all immediately concurred that while it would in fact be cool, it is also a silly proposition. However, only a few seconds later, I realized we could do a display piece that emulated this concept very easily. Floating magnetic globes have been around for quite some time. I determined I would tear the guts out of a stock floating globe and mount it on a portal gun, since they’re easier to find than a gravity gun. • Installing nvidia drivers causes computer to boot to command prompt.

  Hi, I have an Asus u30jc laptop, which comes with the Optimus prime graphics card switching technology that is now supported under 2.6.35, so I decided to give it a try. First I made sure the discrete graphics card was activated and then I installed the drivers proposed by the ubuntu software repository (nvidia-current). However, after rebooting all I got was a command prompt. My graphics card is a nvidia 310M. This is on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. What can I do to diagnose/identify the source of this problem? UPDATE: The messsages in my syslog tell me to check the xorg log: Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.053144 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-simple-slave[1450]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf': No such file or directory Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038176 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors Which I did. • Synchronous vs. asynchronous for publish subscribe communication between JavaScript objects

  I implemented the publish subscribe pattern in a JavaScript module to be used by entirely client-side oriented JavaScript objects. This module has nothing to do with client-server communications in any way, shape or form. My question is whether it's better for the publish method in such a module to be synchronous or asynchronous, and why. As a very simplified example let's say I'm building a custom UI for an HTML5 video player widget: One of my modules is the "video" module that contains the VIDEO element and handles the various features and events associated with that element. This would probably have a namespace something like "widgets.player.video." Another is the "controls" module that has the various buttons - play, pause, volume, scrub, fullscreen, etc. This might have a namespace along the lines of "widgets.player.controls." These two modules are children of a parent "player" module ("widgets.player" ??), and as such would have no inherent knowledge of each other when instantiated as children of the "player" object. The "controls" elements would obviously need to be able to effect some changes on the video (click "Play" and the video should play), and vice versa (video's "timeUpdate" event fires and the visual display of the current time in the controls should update). I could tightly couple these modules and pass references to each other, but I'd rather take a more loosely coupled approach by setting up a pubsub type module that both can subscribe to and publish from. SO (thanks for bearing with me) in this kind of a scenario is there an advantage one way or another for synchronous publication versus asynchronous publication? I've seen some solutions posted online that allow for either/or with a boolean flag whereas others automatically do it asynchronously. I haven't personally seen an implementation that just automatically goes with synchronous publication... is this because there's no advantage to it? I know that I can accomplish this with features provided by jQuery, but it seems that there may be too much overhead involved here. The publish subscribe pattern can be implemented with relatively lightweight code designed specifically for this particular purpose so I'd rather go with that then a more general purpose eventing system like jQuery's (which I'll use for more general eventing needs :-).

• Animation API vs frame animation

  I'm pretty far down the road in my game right now, closing in on the end. And I'm adding little tweaks here and there. I used custom frame animation of a single image with many versions of my sprite on it, and controlled which part of the image to show using rectangles. But I'm starting to think that maybe I should've used the Animation API that comes with android instead. Will this effect my performance in a negative way? Can I still use rectangles to draw my bitmap? Could I add effects from the Animation API to my current frame-controlled animation? like the fadeout-effect etc? this would mean I wont have to change my current code. I want some of my animations to fade out, and just noticed that using the Animation API makes things alot easier. But needless to say, I would prefer not having to change all my animation-code. • Code &amp; Slides &ndash; SDE &ndash; What&rsquo;s new in Silverlight 4

  Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. • Are the Ubuntu ISO images updated From release .ubuntu.com

  Just got idea from this(may not be related though) question however. Are the ISO images from the official site updated with updates in Core Ubuntu system , like Kernel Updates , desktop Environment Updates(unity), i mean Updates of BASE system including X-org, Office suite, Package Manager , Update manager or Gnome Base Modules, those released in update Branches like precise-Updates branch. The reason i am asking this is , if i download the ISO image of Ubuntu 12.04 Say after two or three months from release , i have to do an update of approximately 200~300 MB's size. So why are these ISO images not updated to recent updates, i am aware that all of the components are not updated at the same time , but let's say after One month from actual release ( Both LTS and normal releases), the updated components can be added to form a Updated ISO in regular intervals, which provides new users to use latest versions and features with improved stability and less bandwidth Consumption. I am not mentioning the idea of comparison to Rolling Release , or External PPA's added updates , and neither Netinstal but the ISO of updated Packages .This can be provided as optional download. Since my question is within the boundary of Official updates releases so stability could not be the reason. I guess there are custom packagers out there , but having an official option would be better. It helps in distributing Newest ISO OS which impresses a lot new users , since it makes availability of newer features and a faster system ofcourse. Another reason of asking this is here. Edit: Since almost all new (Desktop) users download the Default ISO's having one or few issue , which may have been corrected in following updates. But most of new laptop users i encountered gave up because of it , so should i suggest ,for laptop not listed on Certified H/W list , to try daily Builds , if needed.

• How can I resolve component types in a way that supports adding new types relatively easily?

  I am trying to build an Entity Component System for an interactive application developed using C++ and OpenGL. My question is quite simple. In my GameObject class I have a collection of Components. I can add and retrieve components. class GameObject: public Object { public: GameObject(std::string objectName); ~GameObject(void); Component * AddComponent(std::string name); Component * AddComponent(Component componentType); Component * GetComponent (std::string TypeName); Component * GetComponent (<Component Type Here>); private: std::map<std::string,Component*> m_components; }; I will have a collection of components that inherit from the base Components class. So if I have a meshRenderer component and would like to do the following GameObject * warship = new GameObject("myLovelyWarship"); MeshRenderer * meshRenderer = warship->AddComponent(MeshRenderer); or possibly MeshRenderer * meshRenderer = warship->AddComponent("MeshRenderer"); I could be make a Component Factory like this: class ComponentFactory { public: static Component * CreateComponent(const std::string &compTyp) { if(compTyp == "MeshRenderer") return new MeshRenderer; if(compTyp == "Collider") return new Collider; return NULL; } }; However, I feel like I should not have to keep updating the Component Factory every time I want to create a new custom Component but it is an option. Is there a more proper way to add and retrieve these components? Is standard templates another solution?

• Session serialization in JavaEE environment

  Please consider the following scenario: We are working on a JavaEE project for which the scalability starts to become an issue. Up until now, we were able to scale up but this is no longer an option. Therefore we need to consider scaling out and preparing the App for a clustered environment. Our main concern right now is serializing the user sessions. Sadly, we did not consider from the beginning the issue and we are encountering the following excetion: java.io.WriteAbortedException: writing aborted; java.io.NotSerializableException: org.apache.catalina.session.StandardSessionFacade I did some research and this exception is thrown because there are objects stored on the session which does not implement the Serializable interface. Considering that all over the app there are quite a few custom objects which are stored on the session without implementing this interface, it would require a lot of tedious work and dedication to fix all these classes declaration. We will fix all this declarations but the main concern is that, in the future, there may be a developer which will add a non Serializable object on the session and break the session serialization & replication over multiple nodes. As a quick overview of the project, we are developing using a home grown framework based on Struts 1 with the Servlet 3.0 API. This means that at this point, we are using the standard session.getAttribute() and session.setAttribute() to work with the session and the session handling is scattered all over the code base. Besides updating the classes of the objects stored on session and making sure that they implement the Serializable interface, what other measures of precaution should we take in order to ensure a reliable Session replication capability on the Application layer? I know it is a little bit late to consider this but what would be the best practice in this case? Furthermore, are there any other issues we should consider regarding this transition? • Physics not synchronizing correctly over the network when using Bullet

  I'm trying to implement a client/server physics system using Bullet however I'm having problems getting things to sync up. I've implemented a custom motion state which reads and write the transform from my game objects and it works locally but I've tried two different approaches for networked games: Dynamic objects on the client that are also on the server (eg not random debris and other unimportant stuff) are made kinematic. This works correctly but the objects don't move very smoothly Objects are dynamic on both but after each message from the server that the object has moved I set the linear and angular velocity to the values from the server and call btRigidBody::proceedToTransform with the transform on the server. I also call btCollisionObject::activate(true); to force the object to update. My intent with method 2 was to basically do method 1 but hijacking Bullet to do a poor-man's prediction instead of doing my own to smooth out method 1, but this doesn't seem to work (for reasons that are not 100% clear to me even stepping through Bullet) and the objects sometimes end up in different places. Am I heading in the right direction? Bullet seems to have it's own interpolation code built-in. Can that help me make method 1 work better? Or is my method 2 code not working because I am accidentally stomping that?

  For a prospective client we have to offer a solution to provide following system: CMS Order Management Shopping Cart CRM Helpdesk Accounting & Finance Custom Functions In order to save time and to avoid reinvent the wheel our idea is to integrate different off-the-shelf solutions. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. • Good design for a simple site that contains a blog

  What is a good design for a simple web site with mostly static pages and a blog? I am helping a friend build this for their small business. We are looking for a simple approach that can be implemented fairly quickly. (I am a programmer and can help with coding, hosting, etc.) One option is to use a site like virb, which lets you choose from one of their themes and build a site pretty easily. You can also include a blog. They host the site for a pretty low monthly rate. I recommended this option, but my friend wants a design that is unique and custom. So, I took one of the themes and started modifying the HTML and CSS. This might still be a good option, but... ...If we are going to greatly modify it, why not just create the static pages from scratch and use something like Wordpress for the blog. Is this a good option? It looks fairly easy to integrate Wordpress with a site so that the design and behavior are really cohesive. Is this a good idea? Do you recommend any other approaches?

• How do I get an application to appear as a choice in update-alternatives?

  I separately installed the Firefox Beta and Alpha channels, and have desktop configuration files pointing to them in ~/.local/share/applications. However, stable Firefox is being used as my default browser by the system. (Firefox Beta used to be used until I messed with the "Default Applications" in System Settings, where it is not listed.) I tried running sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser to manually change it, but it's only recognizing Chromium and Firefox (stable) and showing them as a choice. What can I do to get custom desktop configuration files in ~/.local/share/applications to be seen as default alternatives? I think I may have to fiddle with the desktop config files, or with mimeinfo.cache or mimeapps.list? Running Oneiric. Hosted servers, where you don’t run the servers, but you let a hosting company run dedicated servers. Multi-tenant, like SharePoint online – this is what I am talking about in this blog post. Also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The advantages of a cloud solution are undeniable. Availability, (SharePoint line offers a 99.9% uptime SLA) Reliability. Cost. Due to economies of scale, and no need to hire specialized dedicated staff. Scalability. Security. Flexibility – grow or shrink as you need to. If you are seriously considering SharePoint 2010 in the cloud, there are some things you need to know about SharePoint online. What will work - OOTB Customization, collaboration features etc. will work SharePoint Designer 2010 is supported, so no code workflows will work Visual Studio sandbox solutions, client object model will work. What won’t work - SharePoint 2010 online cloud environment supports only sandbox solutions. BCS, business connectivity services is not supported in SharePoint online. What you can do however is to host your services in Azure, and call them using Silverlight. Custom timer jobs will not work. Long story short, get used to Sandbox solutions – and the new way of programming. Sandbox solutions are pretty damn good. Most of the complaints I have heard around sandbox solutions being too restrictive, are uninformed mechanisms of doing things mired in the ways of 2002. .. or you could just live in 2002 too.
