• Teaching programming to a non-CS graduate

  I have a couple of friends interested in computer programming, but they're non-CS graduates; some of them have very little experience in software testing field (some of them took some basic software testing courses). I am going to be working with them on teaching basic computer programming, and computer science fundamentals (data structures etc). My questions are; What language should I start with? What are essential computer science topics that I should cover before jumping them into computer programming? What readings can I incorporate to make the topic interesting and non-overwhelming? If we want to spend a year on it, what topics should take priority and must be covered in 12 months? Again, these are non computer science folks, and I want to keep the learning as much fun as possible. Thanks everyone.

• User Experience Guidance for Developers: Anti-Patterns

  Picked this up from a recent Dublin Google Technology User Group meeting: Android App Mistakes: Avoiding the Anti-Patterns by Mark Murphy, CommonsWare Interesting approach of "anti-patterns" aimed at mobile developers (in this case Android), looking at the best way to use code and what's in the SDK while combining it with UX guidance (the premise being the developer does the lot). Interestingly, the idea came through that developers need to stop trying to make one O/S behave like another--on UX grounds. Also, pretty clear that a web-based paradigm is being promoting for Android (translators tell me that translating an Android app reminded them of translating web pages too). Haven't see the "anti"-approach before, developer cookbooks and design patterns sure. Check out the slideshare presentation.

• Accidentally uninstalled Ubuntu 14.04 system settings. How to get them back?

  Somehow, cleaning up useless software (using software center), I uninstalled Ubuntu "system settings". I did this by mistake. Now I fail to find system settings application using software center (and there are so many items in history...). It seems strange to me because usually when I try to uninstall something critical (system testing for example), the dependencies manager tells me It will uninstall the whole desktop system then. I am sure I did not have that warning. So I need the name of the software to install or a command line command rather than a system restore to get it back. Very interesting thing. If you ever want to play with this and reproduce it, you will be confused to see Ubuntu Mobile system settings instead! Yes, mobile network and touchscreen settings! Happy pre-release viewing!

  Recently I came upon a well known local consulting company that has some interesting courses I'd like to take. The course is not cheap enough for me to pay out of my own pocket and not feel bad afterwards. The thing is that my startup company uses one set of framework (Python+Django) for most of the stuff I have to deal with, but the course covers Ruby on Rails 3. Since I've not had exposure to Ruby on Rails, and after seeing so many people speak highly of the course, I really thought it would be a good opportunity. I know that I'd have to approach my boss at the angle of 'how this might benefit the company' but other than this, any suggestions?

• Recycle Old Hardware into a Showcase Table

  If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. • How to make a battle system in a mobile indie game more fun and engaging

  I'm developing an indie game for mobile platforms, and part of the game involves a PvP battle system (where the target player is passive). My vision is simple: the active player can select a weapon/item, then attack/use, and display the calculated outcome. I have a concept for battle modifiers that affect stats to make it more interesting, but I'm not convinced the vision is complete. I've received some inspiration from the game engine that powers Modern War/Kingdom Age/Crime City, but I want more control to make it more fun. In those games, you don't have the option to select weapons or use items, and the "battling" screen is simply 3D eye candy. Since this will be an indie game, I won't be spending $$$ on a team of professional 3D artists/animators, so my edge needs to be different. I confirmed with a contact in that company that a PHP web developer can apply for it or even an ASP.Net developer. I also confirmed that the interview won't contain any questions specific to PHP or Ruby on Rails. Can anyone please provide a good list of questions for a senior web developer that isn't specific to a certain language? Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type void type is invalid for sum operator. I can easily fix if I use ISNULL Function as displayed following. SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT ISNULL(NULL,0) AS DATA) t Above script will not throw an error. However, there is one more method how this can be fixed. • Looking for an open source project in Python

  I am looking for practical tasks to get experience with Python. Just reading the books and not doing any tasks in the language is not effective. I solved some problems on the Project Euler and TopCoder and it helped me to learn the syntax of the language better. But those tasks are hard algorithmically, but as a rule is quite simple from the point of view of programming. Now I'm looking for an interesting open source project in Python, participation in which will help me to better understand the OO-model of language. Although, this is my first step with Python, in general, I am an experienced programmer and I can be useful for a project. May be someone can suggest something?

  Found an interesting resource thanks to a close friend. Ping.eu is a free service which would let you test various aspects related to networks which would typically be pain inducing doing it on your own. For seasoned network professional having a MAC address of their own instead of a name :) this might not be that useful. However for a layperson like me this an invaluable resource. • Visual NHibernate Update

  I have previously talked about Visual NHibernate. It has grown since last time, now offering support for multiple databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird), generates projects from existing databases or from existing Visual Studio projects and produces XML or Fluent mappings, to name just a few. To me it is by far the most interesting tools for working with NHibernate I know of (granted, I haven't tried NHibernate Profiler). For a limited period, Slyce Software is offering a 30% discount, until the final version is released, so you may want to have a look. Please note that I am in no way related to Slyce, but made some feature requests which have been implemented (thanks, Gareth!).

• Is it OK to learn an algorithm from an open source project, and then implement it in a closed source project?

  Reference The post that started it all In order to clear up the original question I asked in a provocative manner, I have posed this question. If you learn an algorithm from an open source project, is it OK to use that algorithm in a separate closed sourced project? And if not, does that imply that you cannot use that knowledge ever again? If you can use it, what circumstance could that be? Just to clarify, I am not trying to evade a licence, otherwise I would not have asked the question in the first place. I believe this presents a difficult question and it is interesting to know where the debate can end up.

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Workspace switcher is shown after switching to another workspace

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 on HP Envy 14 and found a rather interesting bug. When I switch between workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, for example moving down to Workspace 3 from Workspace 1, workspace switcher is shown (as seen on below screenshot). It stays there until I hit escape key. After debugging, the problem only happens when I change shortcut keys to Super + direction. With default Ctrl + Alt + direction, everything is OK. I've searched but haven't found this problem reported before, I'm also not sure this is called workspace switcher :) Can you please let me know what to search for, are there any logs which might have some related information?

• creating a google wave clone using php/mysql/jquery

  seasons greetings to all. i have a question that has been rather bugging me as of late. does anyone know how one can create a google wave clone using php/mysql/jquery as primary points of development. any ideas on how this might be possible and recommend any starting points? i have some time off work and it would be an interesting project to undertake as i want to use it in an e-learning framework next year. i will be testing the product on a XAMPP local server. i understand some of the technologies that google wave using but i am rather curious as to how these can be developed to a decent standard using php/mysql/jquery (i mention these three because i am quite adept at them). any links to resources best suited to an intermediate programmer would be appreciated. many thanks and God bless. so far i have this: http://konrness.com/javascript/google-wave-style-scroll-bar-jquery-plugin/
