  Hi, Can you please mention here if you know any shared hosting providers who give option to get a dedicated IP? So far I know of one - Netfirms. Please list others if you know. Notes: 1) If mods feel enough people might be interested in this, we can make it community wiki. 2) The reason why someone would want shared hosting with dedicated IP is: i) In most shared hosting plans, you end up getting better CPU/burst RAM than a VPS provided you don't abuse. ii) Dedicated IP is good for SEO. For example, many times, you may get up getting an IP where some p*** sites are also hosted in shared hosting.

• Oracle Forms 11g Customer Upgrade Reference

• Are CK Metrics still considered useful? Is there an open source tool to help?

  Chidamber & Kemerer proposed several metrics for object oriented code. Among them, depth of inheritance tree, weighted number of methods, number of member functions, number of children, and coupling between objects. Using a base of code, they tried to correlated these metrics to the defect density and maintenance effort using covariant analysis. Are these metrics actionable in projects? Perhaps they can guide refactoring. For example weighted number of methods might show which God classes needed to be broken into more cohesive classes that address a single concern. Is there approach superseded by a better method, and is there a tool that can identify problem code, particularly in moderately large project being handed off to a new developer or team?

• Error MSB4019: The imported project "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk

  This error occurred on our TFS2008 build server which we had upgraded to cater for VS2010 projects (by installing VS2010 on the build server - see this article). Error MSB4019: The imported project "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. However - although we had installed VS2010 on the build server - we had not installed the web development components (Visual Web Developer) - this is what caused the error. To fix - simply add the web development components: Go into Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs Select Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, and click on Change/Remove In the VS Maintenance Mode screens, select Add or Remove Features In the Setup - Options page make sure 'Visual Web Developer' is checked. Click on Update.   You shouldn't need to restart your build service. HTH Tim

• Ubuntu, Gnome, PAM and ecryptfs

  I would like to have a directory accessible to a couple of users, and not readable by maintenance types ... I can do what I want using ecryptfs and a password known only to the "couple of users" in question, who then can mount the directory and use as they see fit. I would love to be able to automate that process and unlock the directory at login - again, only for the "couple users" in question, without asking a password. Gnome-keyring is able to store passphrases/passwords encrypted; and, apparently, if I could get a key identity to ecryptfs, Gnome PAM modules would allow the key with that identity to be unlocked, and the directory could be mounted. Alas, I have found no way to go from point A (Gnome PAM keyring module) to point B (use the unlocked key in ecryptfs). Another use of the same mechanism would allow to build a "key escrow" mechanism, where keys to encrypted volumes are safekept with, e.g., HR; so that company information in encrypted directories can be recovered if you pass under the proverbial bus.

• Are Language Comparisons Meaningful?

  Dr Bjarne Stroustrup in his book D&E says Several reviewers asked me to compare C++ to other languages. This I have decided against doing. Thereby, I have reaffirmed a long-standing and strongly held view: "Language comparisons are rarely meaningful and even less often fair" . A good comparison of major programming languages requires more effort than most people are willing to spend, experience in a wide range of application areas, a rigid maintenance of a detached and impartial point of view, and a sense of fairness. I do not have the time, and as the designer of C++, my impartiality would never be fully credible. -- The Design and Evolution of C++(Bjarne Stroustrup) Do you people agree with his this statement "Language comparisons are rarely meaningful and even less often fair"? Personally I think that comparing a language X with Y makes sense because it gives many more reasons to love/despise X/Y :-P What do you people think?

  The savings begin with Microsoft's Windows Azure Storage Pay-As-You-Go service, which now costs $0.125 per GB as opposed to $0.14 per GB, a savings of 12 percent. Microsoft also slashed the pricing for Windows Azure Storage's 6 Month Plans as much as 14 percent across all tiers. Lastly, compute customers can now enjoy Windows Azure Extra Small Compute pricing of $0.02 per hour instead of $0.04 per hour, a savings of 50 percent. • Image libraries sites to download pro images with no credits expiration policy

  I found professional image libraries sites like http://www.istockphoto.com or http://www.dreamstime.com are quite useful to add some cool images to a website either when filling its contents or when designing its graphic layout. Unfortunately both of the site I listed above use credits plans that expires after 12 months: you buy credits (using real bucks) and then you can download images, but if you don't use all the credits within 1 year, thay suck them out from your virtual wallet (I think it's really unfair, but too bad for you, that's their policy). Do you know about other good image libraries sites (from your real life experience) that use credits to download images, but thay don't expire after 12 months? Obviously I won't ignore your suggestions about any other image libraries sites.

After when starting up again the following errors are reported: init: udevtrigger main process (420) terminated with status 1 init: udevtrigger post-stop process (428) terminated with status 1 init: udevmonitor main process (419) killed by TERM signal The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery Pressing M gives me the following message: Root filesystem check failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system.

• Accenture Launches Smart Grid Data Management Platform

  Accenture announced today it has launched the Accenture Intelligent Network Data Enterprise (INDE), a data management platform to help utilities design, deploy and manage smart grids. INDE's functionality can be enabled by an array of third party technologies. In addition, Accenture plans to offer utilities the option of implementing the INDE solution based on a pre-configured suite of Oracle technologies. The Oracle-based version of INDE will accelerate the design of smart grids and help reduce the costs and risks associated with smart grid implementation. • In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election. Next Up Much of the last couple of months has been focused on preparing for the PASS Summit in Seattle Nov. 6-9. • Building a virtualized SPARC environment

  If you're interested in making effective use of virtualization tools like Oracle VM Server, there's a whitepaper on oracle.com that you should check out. The whitepaper starts with a few specific technologies and hardware: Oracle VM Server for SPARC, T4 Servers, Ops Center, Solaris 11, Sun Network 10GbE Switches, and Sun ZFS Storage Appliances. It then explains how to use them to plan and set up a virtualized environment, in which guests are grouped in Server Pools with high availability and are managed through Ops Center. It explains how Ops Center simplifies the management of logical domains by using custom plans to create new logical domains and managing their life cycle through its user interface.
