• Correctly indexing multiple domains with same content in Google and others

  I have a client with a dozen territorial domains, like mydomain.co.uk, mydomain.fr, mydomain.de, etc Most of these domains hold a different language of the same dynamic content (shop), but some, like co.uk and .com, have the same language and content, except for some content customized to each country/domain in the front page, contact and other pages. I am aware that we should use the canonical meta tag to mark those duplicated contents, but, we want the co.uk to be present in UK ( indexed in google.co.uk ) and the .com to be present in US and other countries, for example, or least that is the goal. Is there anything we can do to "help" google determine the geographical meaning of each domain? If we mark with canonical tag the .com and co.uk sites, do you know how google will decide which one to show on a given search?

• How do I set up hosting a domain name at home with Apache?

  I am relatively new to Ubuntu Linux and I am struggling to figure out the basic set-up of hosting a domain name at home with Apache2. I understand that you have to change your IP from dynamic to a static IP Address but I am not sure how you achieve that step. I am looking for some assistance on this on how to enable self signing certificates, make the domain name resolve on the Internet from hosting the website on the web server, enabling protected directories and the basic commands of accessing the directory where the website files can be uploaded and available on the World Wide Web.

• Two "search" entries in resolv.conf

  I am using 12.04 and have a problem with my resolv.conf There are 2 search lines there. But I can only explain one. In /etc/dhcp/dhclient I removed the requests for domain-name-servers, domain-search, but the lines are still in there. Should I remove the dhcp6.domain-search as well?

• HTTP 303 redirection and robots.txt

  On a site I'm working on, we're using the HTTP 303 redirect pattern (see this article for background) to distinguish between information and non-information resources. So: some URL's under /id get redirected to dynamically-created pages under /doc. These dynamic pages are built from a database, and contain links to other /doc/ resources, so in general we don't want them to be crawled. Our robots.txt contains: Disallow: /doc However, we do want the non-redirected pages under /id to get indexed by Google et al: Allow: /id So the question I have, which I can't find an answer to so far, is: if an allowed /id page 303-redirects to a /doc page, will it still be blocked by robots.txt? If yes, we're OK, but otherwise I'm going to disallow all /id resources in the robots file, as having the crawler hammer the db would be worse than losing search indexing for the /id pages.

• VMware sharing folders between Win7 (host) and Ubuntu (guest)

  What is the best way to share a folder between Win7 64bit (host) and Ubuntu 10.10 (guest) in VMware player? I can setup the sharing just fine (using vmware-tools), but all shared files are root:root owned with 777 permission set. Which, well, sucks. What can I do to have shared files with preserved ownership and permissions? I'm guessing I would need some kind of a file container, that would get mounted in Ubuntu as a block device (if so, it would need to be dynamic, i.e. expand with size of contained files). But maybe there is a better solution?

• Is there a quasi-standard set of attributes to annotate thread safety, immutability etc.?

  Except for a blog post here and there, describing the custom attributes someone created, but that do not seem to get any traction - like one describing how to enforce immutability, another one on Documenting Thread Safety, modeling the attributes after JCIP annotations - is there any standard emerging? Anything MS might be planning for the future? This is something that should be standard, if there's to be any chance of interoperability between libraries concurrency-wise. Both for documentation purposes, and also to feed static / dynamic test tools. If MS isn't doing anything in that direction, it could be done on CodePlex - but I couldn't find anything there, either. <opinion>Concurrency and thread safety are really hard in imperative and object-languages like C# and Java, we should try to tame it, until we hopefully switch to more appropriate languages.</opinion>

• AdSense Custom Search Ads - custom quesry

  i'm trying to set up a custom search ad, but I am nost sure about the query. On the site it says (https://developers.google.com/custom-search-ads/docs/implementation-guide) 'query' should be dynamic based on your page. This variable targets the ads and therefore should always match what the user on your site has just performed a search for. Now, what I understand is: I have to program my page so that the query variable contains some custom words. Am I right? If a user gets to my site through clicking on an adsense, there is no way to "know" what the user looked for and display my query accordingly, right? Thanks for any help!

• Inspection, code review - is it really testing?

  ISTQB, Wikipedia or other sources classify verification acitivities (reviews etc.) as a static testing, yet other do not. If we can say that peer reviews and inspections are actually a kind of a testing, then a lot of standards do not make sense (consider e.g. ISO which say that validation is done by testing, while verification by checking of work products) - it should at least say dynamic testing for validation, shouldn't it? I am completing master thesis dealing with QA and I must admit that I have never seen worse and more ambiguous and contradicting literature than in this field :/ Do you think (and if so, why) that static testing is a good and justifiable term or should we stick to testing and static checks/analysis?

• Some websites are not opening. What should I do? [closed]

  Some websites are not opening in my system. I am using Ubuntu 11.04. Earlier, when I was using Ubuntu 10.01, there was no such issue. I have tried Firefox as well as Chromium and I am sure the issue is not with the browser. same websites are opening perfectly with Windows. Google, Twitter and Ubuntu related websites are running perfect. Other websites like www.downrightnow.com, easy-mantra.com are not opening. Installed Wubi on windows7 (32 bit). Ubuntu 12.10 is 64 bit. • Does MATLAB perform tail call optimization?

  I've recently learned Haskell, and am trying to carry the pure functional style over to my other code when possible. An important aspect of this is treating all variables as immutable, i.e. constants. In order to do so, many computations that would be implemented using loops in an imperative style have to be performed using recursion, which typically incurs a memory penalty due to the allocation a new stack frame for each function call. In the special case of a tail call (where the return value of a called function is immediately returned to the callee's caller), however, this penalty can be bypassed by a process called tail call optimization (in one method, this can be done by essentially replacing a call with a jmp after setting up the stack properly). Does MATLAB perform TCO by default, or is there a way to tell it to?

Oracle Multitenant, new with Oracle Database 12c, is a key component of this – a new architecture for consolidating databases and simplifying operations in the Cloud. With this, the inaugural post in the Multitenant blog, my goal is to start the conversation about Oracle Multitenant. We are very proud of this new architecture, which we view as a major advance for Oracle. Customers, partners and analysts who have had previews are very excited about its capabilities and its flexibility. This high level review of Oracle Multitenant will touch on our design considerations and how we re-architected our database for the cloud. I’ll briefly describe our new multitenant architecture and explain it’s key benefits. Finally I’ll mention some of the major use cases we see for Oracle Multitenant. Industry Trends We always start by talking to our customers about the pressures and challenges they’re facing and what trends they’re seeing in the industry. Some things don’t change. They face the same pressures and the same requirements as ever: Pressure to do more with less; be faster, leaner, cheaper, and deliver services 24/7. Big companies have achieved scale. Now they want to realize economies of scale. As ever, DBAs are faced with the challenges of patching and upgrading large numbers of databases, and provisioning new ones.  Requirements are familiar: Performance, scalability, reliability and high availability are non-negotiable. They need ever more security in this threatening climate. There’s no time to stop and retool with new applications. What’s new are the trends. These are the techniques to use to respond to these pressures within the constraints of the requirements. With the advent of cloud computing and availability of massively powerful servers – even engineered systems such as Exadata – our customers want to consolidate many applications into fewer larger servers. There’s a move to standardized services – even self-service. Consolidation Consolidation is not new; companies have tried various different approaches to consolidation of databases in the cloud. One approach is to partition a powerful server between several virtual machines, one per application. A downside of this is that you have the resource and management overheads of OS and RDBMS per VM – that is, per application. Another is that you have replaced physical sprawl with virtual sprawl and virtual sprawl is still expensive to manage. In the dedicated database model, we have a single physical server supporting multiple databases, one per application. So there’s a shared OS overhead, but RDBMS process and memory overhead are replicated per application. Let's think about our traditional Oracle Database architecture. Every time we create a database, be it a production database, a development or a test database, what do we do? We create a set of files, we allocate a bunch of memory for managing the data, and we kick off a series of background processes. This is replicated for every one of the databases that we create. As more and more databases are fired up, these replicated overheads quickly consume the available server resources and this limits the number of applications we can run on any given server. In Oracle Database 11g and earlier the highest degree of consolidation could be achieved by what we call schema consolidation. In this model we have one big server with one big database. Individual applications are installed in separate schemas or table-owners. Database overheads are shared between all applications, which affords maximum consolidation. The shortcomings are that application changes are often required. There is no tenant isolation. One bad apple can spoil the whole batch. New Architecture & Benefits In Oracle Database 12c, we have a new multitenant architecture, featuring pluggable databases. This delivers all the resource utilization advantages of schema consolidation with none of the downsides. There are two parts to the term “pluggable database”: "pluggable", which is new, and "database", which is familiar.  Before we get to the exciting new stuff let’s discuss what hasn’t changed. A pluggable database is a fully functional Oracle database. It’s not watered down in any way. From the perspective of an application or an end user it hasn’t changed at all. This is very important because it means that no application changes are required to adopt this new architecture. There are many thousands of applications built on Oracle databases and they are all ready to run on Oracle Multitenant. So we have these self-contained pluggable databases (PDBs), and as their name suggests, they are plugged into a multitenant container database (CDB). The CDB behaves as a single database from the operations point of view. Very much as we had with the schema consolidation model, we only have a single set of Oracle background processes and a single, shared database memory requirement. This gives us very high consolidation density, which affords maximum reduction in capital expenses (CapEx). By performing management operations at the CDB level – “managing many as one” – we can achieve great reductions in operating expenses (OpEx) as well, but we retain granular control where appropriate. Furthermore, the “pluggability” capability gives us portability and this adds a tremendous amount of agility. We can simply unplug a PDB from one CDB and plug it into another CDB, for example to move it from one SLA tier to another. I'll explore all these new capabilities in much more detail in a future posting.  Use Cases We can identify a number of use cases for Oracle Multitenant. High volume data distribution literally via disk drives in envelopes distributed by truck! - distribution of things like GIS or MDM master databases …various others! Benefits Previous approaches to consolidation have involved a trade-off between reductions in Capital Expenses (CapEx) and Operating Expenses (OpEx), and they’ve usually come at the expense of agility. With Oracle Multitenant you can have your cake and eat it: Minimize CapEx More Applications per server Minimize OpEx Manage many as one Standardized procedures and services Rapid provisioning Maximize Agility Cloning for development and testing Portability through pluggability Scalability with RAC Ease of Adoption Applications run unchanged It’s a pure deployment choice. Neither the database backend nor the application needs to be changed. In future postings I’ll explore various aspects in more detail. • Ubuntu 12.04 Install Problems.. Installation Type screen. No options [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Only ‘sdb’ shows up when installing 12.04 on a new Dell inspiron 14z I am new to Linux and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a new HP Pavilion DV6TQE Ivy Bridge and being presented with the below screen which I believe is incorrect. My disk is set up as a basic disk (not dynamic) and I tried with a single C:\ partition and by creating a second partition in windows with no luck. Any ideas? UPDATE: I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it yet.. My hard drive has a 32gb mSSD cache which is listed as dev/sdb. for some reason this is causing the installation trouble.

• What is the best way to find a python google app engine coach?

  i'm a software engineer and have been building Google App Engine apps with Python for about a year. I have a pretty good familiarity with the main concepts: web app framework, modeling, queues, memcache, django templates, etc. Where I think I'm lacking is in methodology. Architecting the app, using git for versioning, designing an writing unit tests. I'm totally convinced to incorporate these practices in my development style, and have started reading up on them. However I've learned that I'm a much faster learner when I have someone experienced to ask questions to and interact with. IRC channels and forums like stack overflow are great. But sometimes you want something more dynamic that produces results faster. So my question is how can a person find an experienced engineer that is familiar with the technologies he uses and that is willing to give them a couple of hours of Skype coaching sessions per week in return for an hourly fee...

• How does a BSP tree work for Z sorting?

  I'm developing a 3D engine in software, and so I must compute Z sorting manually. I'm currently using the painters algorithm to sort triangles and then drawing them back-to-front. This causes artifacts that I'm trying to correct. Would using a dynamic BSP-tree ensure "correct Z sorting" of triangles? Why? Because the bounding volumes of triangles would be similar? Since I would have a single "world" BSP tree, would I have to remove and re-add any moved/scaled/rotated object into the tree? Is it possible to add triangles into a BSP tree without the expensive cutting process? Why do you need to cut triangles on the axis planes anyway? Is it faster to traverse a BSP tree from any angle, than to sort all tris each draw like the painters algorithm?

• Linux Kernel - Slab Allocator Question

  I am playing around with the kernel and am looking at the kmem_cache files_cachep belonging to fork.c. It detects the sizeof(files_struct). My question is this: I have altered files_struct and added a rb_root (red/black tree root) using the built-in functionality in linux/rbtree.h. I can properly insert values into this tree. I'm thinking it's a memory allocation issue with new processes made by fork() of a parent process. Could this be the case and could it have something to do with kmem_cache files_cachep?

• Strange profiling results: definitely non-bottleneck method pops up

  I'm profiling a program using sampling profiling in YourKit and JProfiler, and also "manually" (I launch it and press Ctrl-Break several times to get thread dumps). All three methods give me extremely strange results: some tens of percents of time spent in a 3-line method that does not even do any allocation or synchronization and doesn't have loops etc. Moreover, after I made this method into a NOP and even removed its invocation completely, the observable program performance didn't change at all (although it got a negligible memory leak, since it was a method for freeing a cheap resource). I'm thinking that this might be because of the constraints that JVM puts on the moments at which a thread's stacktrace may be taken, and it somehow turns out that in my program it is exactly the moments where this method is invoked, although there is absolutely nothing special about it or the context in which it is invoked. What can be the explanation for this phenomenon? What are the aforementioned constraints? What further measurements can I take to clarify the situation?

  Can the JVM recover from an OutOfMemoryError without a restart if it gets a chance to run the GC before more object allocation requests come in? Do the various JVM implementations differ in this aspect? EDIT: My question was about the JVM recovering and not the user program trying to recover by catching the error. In other words if an OOME is thrown in an application server (jboss/websphere/..) do I have to restart it? Or can I let it run if further requests seem to work without a problem. Sorry if that wan't clear.

• Deploying a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually deploying the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this deployment process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to deploy it in a professionnal way ?
