  I'm setting up a link tracking system, which (temporarily) involves adding /link/id/ in front of URL (like http://server/data/id/publication/id/). rewrite data/id/(.*) http://server/$1; The request is logged as: ip - - [17/Nov/2011:10:07:19 +0300] "GET /data/id/publication/id.html HTTP/1.1" 302 154 "-" "UA"` For some reason (keeping the compatibility with AWStats) it is wanted to have 200 logged instead of 302. (nginx allows to get 301 code out of box with permanent option, but thats inappropriate too) What are my options here? Will the combination of location { } and rewrite do the job?

• Throttling apache downloads selectively

  I have a linux box running Debian Sarge (old I know) and apache 2.0.54. It serves two kinds of files - regular web pages and small images, and a lot of large podcast mp3s. The podcast downloads swamp the connection and make the rest of the site unresponsive, so I'm looking to throttle the data transfer rate (not the request rate) of just the podcasts. I've set up haproxy using this technique which does what it says it will, but solves a different problem - even only 5 simultaneous podcast downloads is enough to saturate the link. In a perfect world, haproxy would support per-connection throttling, but it doesn't. So far I've looked at mod_bw (won't compile for me, seems unsupported), mod_cband (unsupported, widely reported as problematic) and iptables using tc. The iptables approach would allow me to throttle things, but would not be at all selective, slowing down everything on the server, not just the podcasts, so would just move the bottleneck without changing overall behaviour. Ideas?

• Tracking down memory issues affecting a website

  I've got a website (Wordpress based) that became unresponsive. I SSH'd into the server and saw that we were out of memory. Errors in my apache log files indicated the same... things failing to be allocated due to lack of memory). Restarting the server fixes it. So I look in access.log and error.log around the time of the incident but I see nothing strange. No extra traffic, no unusual requests. In fact the only request around the time of the problem was one from Googlebot for an rss feed... at that point I start to see 500 response codes in the logs until the machine was rebooted. I look in message.log hoping to see something but there is nothing at all for that entire day (which is odd as there are entries for every other day). The site has a large amount of memory allocated to it and normally runs using about 30% of what is available. My question... how would you go about trying to track this down at this point? What are some other log files I could check or strategies I could take?

• Kill ssh background process after disconnect / timeout?

  I frequently use ssh tunnels to access VNC sessions on remote machines, but this is on my laptop so the connections break when I put it to sleep for the night. If I then try to re-open the connection in the morning, I have to manually kill the ssh session, otherwise I get this error: bind: Address already in use channel_setup_fwd_listener: cannot listen to port: 1202 Could not request local forwarding. The SSH command I'm using is this: ssh -N -C -f -L 1202:localhost:5900 name@server What's the best way to have the ssh tunnel die when it disconnects? Or reset?

• Employers and intellectual property 2

  I have a question about intellectual property, I am currently a manager in a small manufacturing firm. The owners are driven by greed and don't appreciate the development process of complex machinery and are happy just to send things out half done. I on the other hand think that it should be done properly as breakdown in the field can be costly, embarrassing. They seem to have all of us running around doing most of the work out of hours using the attitude of "Be grateful to have a job" yet no one has a contract or any security or any agreement in place. For a couple of the projects i am using PLC's and doing the code in my own time and the testing during company time, and i am aware that they cannot support their own machines if i left, but as i created the code in my own time who owns it? The have asked my to put in a shutdown code for a maintenance request after a given length of time, could this be classed as criminal damage or anything illegal apart from immoral? (we sell the machines with 12 month warrantee, shut down after) But as time goes on I'm getting rather fed up of the companies attitude toward the client. I am considering keeping the clients as my own and get them to contact me directly In the shutdown code. By doing something like this is a trial version contact me for a full license? I wouldn't feel bad for my current employer as he is not afraid to S***t on people as he has been evolved in numerous law suits and has over 30 failed companies leaving people and customers high and dry, we have took the company this far on the reputation of the workers and and i can see things heading like all the other companies he has owned and taking our reputations with him. So i suppose now i have set the scene, if i code into it to contact me directly in the shutdown could there be any legal impact on me, as i rightly or wrongly think i own the code and designs? • Python Web Applications: What is the way and the method to handle Registrations, Login-Logouts and Cookies? [on hold]

  I am working on a simple Python web application for learning purposes. I have chosen a very minimalistic and simple framework. I have done a significant amount of research but I couldn't find a source clearly explaining what I need, which is as follows: I would like to learn more about: User registration User Log-ins User Log-outs User auto-logins I have successfully handled items 1 and 3 due to their simple nature. However, I am confused with item 2 (log-ins) and item 4 (auto-logins). When a user enters username and password, and after hashing with salts and matching it in the DB; What information should I store in the cookies in order to keep the user logged in during the session? Do I keep username+password but encrypt them? Both or just password? Do I keep username and a generated key matching their password? If I want the user to be able to auto-login (when they leave and come back to the web page), what information then is kept in the cookies? I don't want to use modules or libraries that handle these things automatically. I want to learn basics and why something is the way it is. I would also like to point out that I do not mind reading anything you might offer on the topic that explains hows and whys. Possibly with algorithm diagrams to show the process. Some information: I know about setting headers, cookies, encryption (up to some level, obviously not an expert!), request objects, SQLAlchemy etc. I don't want any data kept in a single web application server's store. I want multiple app-servers to be handle a user, and whatever needs to be kept on the server to be done with a Postgres/MySQL via SQLAlchemy (I think, this is called stateless?) Thank you.

• estimating size of reply HTTP headers

  I am trying to download a file via a basic socket connection, using a HTTP GET request. So, I have to specify how many bytes of data coming in I have to read from the socket. However, I am having trouble deciding the amount of data (say, in bytes) the server would reply back with. I know that there is a "Content-Length" field in the reply sent by server, but that gives me the size of the actual data (without the http headers). Is there a way to get the exact size of HTTP headers sent by the server or an estimation is required? (I am doing this for downloading on a mobile network, where every bit of data matters in terms of time and money, so I don't wish to make an unnecessary larger estimate of the header size.)

  I have a server running Apache with mod_proxy, a module to use my localhost as a proxy server. When somebody on the same LAN visits my server (my localhost through my lan ip), he/she can see only the .html page loaded into my server. Due to DNS Spoofing restrictions on the client, if he/she clicks on a link that refers to something not on my server, Apache says correctly "Object not found", because the client cannot request the page from the Internet (remember, the DNS is spoofed to my localhost). The question is: how to configure Apache to grab the page in place of the client?

• Error in New-MailboxExportRequest - "Couldn't find the Enterprise Organizational Container" even though permissions seem right

  When disabling users I typically will be asked to retain a copy of their mailbox. I accomplish this by literally creating their mailbox in Outlook and then exporting to PST. Is there some way around having to do this just to save a mailbox? Edit: I've tried New-MailboxExportRequest but I keep getting the following after providing an alias: Supply values for the following parameters: FilePath: \\localhost\EXPORT_PST\myuser.pst Mailbox: myuser Couldn't find the Enterprise Organization container. <--- the error I've also tried supplying [email protected] as the mailbox as well. Edit 2: I had already seen the post at http://www.mikepfeiffer.net/2010/10/error-couldnt-find-the-enterprise-organization-container-when-creating-a-new-mailbox-export-request/ so I set the permissions as follows below: NTFS permissions Sharing permissions I am still getting that error. Final Solution In Exchange SP2, it does not warn you that you have not set role assignments, it just fails. So be sure to create a management role for "Mailbox Import Export" and add your user to the group, then restart PowerShell for this to take effect.

• Windows 2003 Server Intermittent DNS Issues

  Looking for a little help here. I have a Windows 2003 DNS Server set up on our network. Lately computers on our LAN have been, at times, unable to resolve a certain sub domain for our website whereas other times the request is resolved just fine. During these periods of "downtime" all other network activity (i.e web sites, internal resolutions, network shares, etc.) remains normal. I can tell it is a problem with our DNS server because the resolution always works from outside our network. I'm hoping someone out there has experienced something similar or could at least offer me place to start troubleshooting. Thanks!

  Hi, I have a Netware Novell server with an eDirectory and different objects configured. I implemented an OEServer2 SP1 to emulate a DSfW to manage the eDirectory with AD. I join the domain with the Administrator login and I am logged as the Administrator domain. So far, there are no problems. When I open the MMC window on Windows Server 08 and snap in the "Active Directory Users and Computers" I can see all the OUs and objects presented in the Netware N. server. But, when I select some OUs I can have an error, and when I select other I don’t have this error. Error: “Data from XXXXX is not available from Domain Controller OES2.yyyy.local because: The server is unwilling to process the request. Try again later, or choose another DC by selecting Connect to Domain Controller on the Domain context menu.” With XXXX= OU’s name and yyyy.local= domain name and OES2 server name If somebody can upload this SP or post a link to download it... • Chrome Crash Investigation

  Chrome is crashing very very frequently(every 2-3 min). It becomes irresponsive. How can I start investigate why this is crashing so much? It feels to me that certain components of some web pages are triggering the crash. I also checked "C:\Users\irfan\AppData\Local\Google\CrashReports", but this folder is empty. Some sort of process tacking tool, and keep an eye out for which request is being made just before the crash, or something like that. Any software suggestion? Im using Windows 7. Please don't suggest, reinstall chrome. I want to know why this is happening.

  I'm running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've installed PHP Version 5.2.14 using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I've created a virtual directory and a file with which I can browse it and it returns all the PHP information just fine. I'm trying to install MantisBT, and when I copy all the file to my virtual directory and browse index.php I receive the following error detail: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.   I need help as I am confused a lot with .htaccess Some months back, I removed WWW from the URL of my domain name using following .htaccess lines: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^example.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [L,R=301] Now, I also want to remove the trailing slash from the URL, as because I am using WordPress and a page/post will open, no matter if there's a trailing slash or NOT! I request you to please provide me the .htaccess code, so that I can REMOVE the trailing slash. Kindly remember, I don't want WWW also and I have already set .htaccess rule for the removal of WWW Note: 3 Years back when I started the blog, I set the Permalinks Structure without trailing slash. • How can I make my Virtualbox Vista see my USB device (iPad)?

  I have the latest VirtualBox. I have filters for the iPad. But it does not show up in my virtual Windows vista My Computer screen or virtual iTunes. Also my host is running Zonealarm firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials. In addition the guest has AVG antivirus. Could those programs conflict with virtualbox?

• Suggestion for setting web application parameters

  I'm creating a web application on GWT. I'm using MVP pattern with activities and places. I have a xml config file containing some parameters to be used by the application. Content of this xml file is sent to the client using HttpRequest; I'm using a singleton class to hold the information from the xml file. Right now, the application is getting the data when the user starts the application in the home page, that is working well. Now, since I'm using activities and places, a user can bookmark a page and starts the application in any other page (Place). And here comes the problem: Since I'm using some of the information from the xml file to set some ui widgets, I have to check if the xml config file was read and the application already has the parameters (I do this by checking the singleton class). But the xml file is read by using an HttpRequest, so I got errors 'cause the application needs some parameters to initialize some ui widgets, but these parameters aren't ready on time. I was thinking on using an synchronous request to fix the problem, but it seems complicated and not recommendable to do that. So, I'd like to hear some other suggestions. Thanks.

  I've set up IIS6 with FastCGI to use php-cgi.exe. I have some php websites by external parties, that I'm trying to run in a test environment. One of the websites just plain gives me a FastCGI Error Page. Question: Is there some way to enable logging somewhere so that I can get a bit more information on this problem? I have looked in Eventlog IIS Website log (c:\windows\system32\Logfiles) PHP log But no results, except the IIS Website log mentions a return of a 500 page. Question: Is there any other way to debug/check where things might be going wrong? Here is what the page looks like: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. • How to efficiently dump a huge MySQL innodb database?

  I got an Ubuntu 10.04 production MySQL database server where total size of database is 260 GB while size of root partition is itself 300 GB where DB is stored, essentially means around 96% of / is full and there's no space left for storing dump/backup etc. No other disk is attached to server as of now. My task is to migrate this database to other server sitting in different datacenter. Question is how to do that efficiently with minimum downtime? I'm thinking in line of: Request to attach an extra drive to server and take a dump in that drive. Transfer dump to new server, restore it and make new server slave of existing one to keep data in sync When migration is needed, break replication, update slave config to accept read/write requests and make old server read-only so it won't entertain any write requests and tell app developers to update there config with new IP address for db. What's your suggestions to improve this or any alternate better approach for this task?
