And in /var/log/auth.log: gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: egg_symkey_generate_simple: assertion `iterations >= 1' failed gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: couldn't prepare to write out keyring: /home/yann/.gnome2/keyrings/login_1.keyring So I tried to move "login.keyring". I typed no password for the security when logging into U1, accepted non secured way to save passwords. And a message told me the operation successfully completed (in French). But, sync did not work. • Can I use a desktop as a network server?

  Pardon me if I'm asking the wrong question. But I am a newbie in networking and I'm not sure what direction to go on this. I have just setup an Ubuntu Desktop. I am planning to convert it to a network server without losing the GUI interface (again, I'm a newbie) and use it to manage and monitor user access to a network with a small number of network terminals all running on Windows. My purpose is to use the new server to filter sites accessed by each terminals, monitor sites being visited by employees and grant access to both group and user-specific folders based on their IP address. Is this possible? What server software do I need to install? How do I structure the hardware? (I have a router, a hub, the Ubuntu server and the network terminals) How do I assign privileges to users and monitor them at the same time? Thank you in advance for your replies.

  I have a client who wants a tool for him to be able to upload his products, enter orders, and keep track of customer details. There are quite a few highly customised requests, which is why he wants the tool custum made. He does not care much about the interface design - it just has to be usable and provide access to the databade. I've already designed the database. I have no experience of desktop applications and usually write my web apps in PHP with the Yii framework. But hosting this on a server seems like overkill. I also have .net experience from a few years ago. What would be the best options for writing this as a desktop application?

  When programming at work we now and then face a problem with visitors and module/project dependencies. Say you have a class A in a module X. And there are subclasses B and C in module Y. That means that module Y is dependent on module X. If we want to implement a visitor pattern to the class hierarchy, thus introducing an interface with the handle Operations and an abstract accept method in A, we get a dependency from module Y to module X, which we cannot allow for architectural reasons. What we do is, use a direct comparison of the types (i.e. instanceof, since we program in Java), which is not satisfying. My question(s) would be: Do you encounter this kind of problem in your daily work (or do we make poor architectural choices) and if so, how is your approach to solve this?

• Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

  Possible Duplicate: Gnome Shell Extension Empty I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.4 running on a Win 7 box via VBox and switched the user interface to Gnome 3 but have a problem. In Advanced Settings (gnome tweak), the Shell Extensions window has no listings and the Theme window shows a "caution" triangle next to the Shell theme drop box. I have re-installed the default extensions using the Noobs Lab posted instructions: sudo apt-get install shell-extensions3.4 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions The commands appear to complete without error. Symptoms are: Gnome 2 visual appearance and no window borders or controls. To close a window, I have to click the window indicator in the sys tray and select the close menu item. Any ideas?

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

• Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 results in loss of N network capability - how to restore?

  On Ubuntu 11.10, I had zero issues with N network detection and speed. I cannot remember whether the old driver was iwlagn or iwlwifi. This was with Ubuntu repository Linux kernel 3.0.0-22. Upon upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, iwlwifi is the available driver and while it detects N networks, upon connection, the speed is cripplingly low and DNS look-ups do not occur (impossible to browse). This is with Ubuntu repository Linux kernel 3.2.0-26. Please note that the 11n_disable flag for the iwlwifi module cannot work for me as I require N network access. Is there another solution? Perhaps, is there a way to easily patch the new kernel with the old wireless module (just copy-and-paste the iwlagn module into the new kernel source and re-compile)?   I have a 23inch Toshiba model#23L1350U that I am using as a computer monitor via VGA plug; it is a full 1080P resolution TV but in Ubuntu it shows up as a Toshiba 72inch Television and wont go past the resolution 1366 by 1768. Has anyone came up with a solution to this problem..I used to get full 1080 resolution with my Insignia 32 inch TV so I know my hardware can push the signal, I am running a Radeon x1550 graphics cars 3200+ processor on a 756 chip set 64bit version of Ubuntu 13.04 your help is greatly appreciated and you may or may not be compensated for your time

  Overheating maybe is exaggerating word, but it's temperature is more in comparison with windows. My Graphic Card has failed for 2 time and I've paid money for each time. The problem makes me disappointed of keeping on ubuntu. Whenever I want to install "nvidia-current" my resolution becomes too low in screen and sometimes it just shows a dark screen. Is there any other Linux distribution which be more compatible with Hardware, specially Graphic Card? My Laptop is Dell Vostro 1510.   I understand that from other answers, Arrays and Vectors are the best choices. Many on SE claim that Linked Lists and Maps are bad for video game programming. I understand that for the most part, I can use Arrays. However, I don't really understand exactly when to use Vectors over Arrays. Why even use Vectors? Wouldn't it be best if I simply always used an Array, that way I know how much memory my game needs? Specifically my game would only ever load a single "Map" area of tiles, such as Map[100][100], so I could very easily have an array of GameObjectContainer GameObjects[100][100], which would reserve an entire map's worth of possible gameobjects, correct? So why use a Vector instead? Memory is quite large on modern hardware.

• How can I get a 1920x1080 resolution?

  I a newbie Linux and have just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows 7. I love the interface of Ubuntu but unfortunately I can only get a 800x600 or 1024x728 resolution with black bars all around the screen. I have an nVidia GTX 570 graphics card and an Asus 1080p 23" monitor. What may be of note is that I had to use the nomodeset command on installation of the boot would get stuck at a line with "nouveau", which I understand is to do with the drivers. Additionally, when I type in xrandr to the terminal, it comes up with the error message "failed to get size of gamma for output default". I guess what I am looking for here is someone who could explain to me really simply the steps I have to take to get a full 1080p resolution, at which point I am sure i will become a great fan of the OS! • Splitting Logic, Data, Layout and "Hacks"

  Sure, we all heard of programming patterns such as MVVM, MVC and such. But that isn't really what I'm looking into as Layout, Data and Logic is already pretty much split up (XML-Layout markup, Database, insert your language of choice here). The platform I am developing for is hard to maintain over the updated versions and older OSes. The project significantly grew up over the last few months and dealing with different platform versions really is a pain. For example simply disabling an user interface control for all existing versions took me around 40 lines of code in the logic layer, wrangling around with invocation, delegation, singletons that provide UI handling and so on. Is there a clean way to keep track of those "hacks" by maybe excluding it into separate classes or even packages? Should I overwrite existing framework code in order to handle my requirements correctly? If so, does that concept have a name?

  I'm unable to record audio without noise on my Ubuntu laptop . It is not a grounding problem . My windows os is able to record voice without the static noise so, my hardware is fine . I read in the Windows forums that the os has software noise filtering mechanism that's automatically enabled. How do I do the same in Ubuntu? The output of an SPF checking tool (http://www.kitterman.com/getspf2.py) says SPF records are primarily published in DNS as TXT records. The TXT records found for your domain are: i=182&m=bizmail-mx2-p9 SPF records should also be published in DNS as type SPF records. No type SPF records found. Checking to see if there is a valid SPF record. No valid SPF record found of either type TXT or type SPF. Where do I get access to these values? Can somebody speculate, where can I find an interface, or a configuration file to fill in the missing fields?
