  Hi all, Being a newbie in javascript I came to a situation where I need more information on escaping characters in a string. Basically I know that in order to escape " I need to replace it with \" but what I don't know is for which characters I need to escape a particular string for. Is there a list of these "characters to escape"? or is it any character that is not a-zA-Z0-9 ? In my situation, I don't have control over the content that is being displayed on my page. Users enter some text and save it. I then use a webservice to extract them from the database, build a json array of objects, then iterate the array when I need to display them. In this case, I have - naturally - no idea of what the text the user has entered and therefore for what characters I need to escape. I also use jQuery for this specific project (just in case it has a function I am not aware of, to do what I need) Providing examples would be appreciated but I also want to learn the theory and logic behind it. Hope someone can be of any help.

• Why does PDO print my password when the connection fails?

  I have a simple website where I establish a connection to a Mysql server using PDO. $dbh = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=DB;port=3306', 'USER', 'SECRET',array(PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND => "SET NAMES utf8")); I had some traffic on my site and the servers connection limit was reached, and the website throw this error, with my PLAIN password in it! Because this exact error is something you can provoke very easily on most sites using simple http flooding. I now wrapped my conenction into a try/catch clause, but still. I think this is catastrophic! So I am new to PDO and my questino is: What do I have to consider to be safe! How to I establish a connection in a secure way? Are there other known security holes like this one that I have to be aware of?

• splice() not working on correctly

  I am setting a cookie for each navigation container that is clicked on. It sets an array that is joined and set the cookie value. if its clicked again then its removed from the array. It somehow buggy. It only splices after clicking on other elements. and then it behaves weird. • Grails - Where to store properties related to domains

  This is something I have been struggling about for some time now. The thing is: I have many (20 or so) static arrays of values. I say static because that is how I'm actually storing them, as static arrays inside some domains. For example, if I have a list of known websites, I do: class Website { ... static websites = ["web1", "web2" ...] } But I do this just while developing, because I can easily change the arrays if needed, but what I'm going to do when the application is ready for deployment? In my project it is very probable that, at some point, these arrays of values change. I've been researching on that matter, one can store application properties inside an external .properties file, but it will be impossible to store an array, even futile, because if some array gets an additional value, the application can't recognize it until the name of the new property is added where needed. Another approach is to store this information in the database, but for some reason it seems like a waste to add 20 or more tables that will have just two rows, an id and a name. And the last option, as far as I know, would be an XML, but I'm not very experienced with those. It seems groovy has a way of creating and reading XML files relatively easy, but I don't know how difficult would be to modify an XML whose layout is predefined in the application. Needless to say that storing them in the config.groovy is not an option since any change will require to recompile. I haven't come across some "standard" (maybe a best practice?) way of dealing with these. So the questions is: Where to store these arrays?

• Getting Response From Jquery JSON

  I'm having trouble getting a response from my php jquery / json / ajax. I keep combining all these different tutorials together but I still can't seem to pull it all together since no one tutorial follow what I'm trying to do. Right now I'm trying to pass two arrays (since there's no easy way to pass associative arrays) to my jquery ajax function and just alert it out. My PHP file returns {"names":["john doe","jane doe"],"ids":["123","223"]} It seems to be just ending here Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property '0' of undefined so my sub0 is killing me.

• finding long repeated substrings in a massive string

  I naively imagined that I could build a suffix trie where I keep a visit-count for each node, and then the deepest nodes with counts greater than one are the result set I'm looking for. I have a really really long string (hundreds of megabytes). I have about 1 GB of RAM. This is why building a suffix trie with counting data is too inefficient space-wise to work for me. To quote Wikipedia's Suffix tree: storing a string's suffix tree typically requires significantly more space than storing the string itself. The large amount of information in each edge and node makes the suffix tree very expensive, consuming about ten to twenty times the memory size of the source text in good implementations. The suffix array reduces this requirement to a factor of four, and researchers have continued to find smaller indexing structures. And that was wikipedia's comments on the tree, not trie. How can I find long repeated sequences in such a large amount of data, and in a reasonable amount of time (e.g. less than an hour on a modern desktop machine)? (Some wikipedia links to avoid people posting them as the 'answer': Algorithms on strings and especially Longest repeated substring problem ;-) )

• Multithreading for loop while maintaining order

  I started messing around with multithreading for a CPU intensive batch process I'm running. Essentially I'm trying to condense multiple single page tiffs into single PDF documents. This works fine with a foreach loop or standard iteration but can be very slow for several 100 page documents. I tried the following based on a some examples I found to use multithreading and it has significant performance improvements however it obliterates the page order instead of 1,2,3,4 it will be 1,3,4,2,6,5 on what thread completes first. My question is how would I utilize this technique while maintaining the page order and if I can will it negate the performance benefit of the multithreading? Thank you in advance.   Basic Details I have a linq statement that grabs some records from a database and puts them in a System.Linq.Enumerable: var someRecords = someRepoAttachedToDatabase.Where(p=>true); Suppose this grabs tons (25k+) of records, and i need to perform operations on all of them. to speed things up, I have to decided to use paging and perform the operations needed in blocks of 100 instead of all of the records at the same time. The Question The line in question is the line where I count the number of records in the subset to see if we are on the last page; if the number of records in subset is less than the size of paging - then that means there are no more records left. What I would like to know is what is the fastest way to do this?   I'm having trouble with insertRowsAtIndexPaths:. I'm not quite sure how it works. I watched the WWDC 2010 video on it, but I'm still getting an error. I thought I was supposed to update the model, then wrap the insertRowsAtIndexPaths: in the tableView beginUpdates and endUpdates calls.   I am returning a PHP array back to a JQuery call for appending into a div called "name-data". I want my array to be listed vertically, so I concatenate a br tag in the PHP however, when it gets to the HTML page the br is not being rendered, it just comes out as text. I have tried the various forms of br all without luck. I am new to JQuery - What am I doing wrong ? Many Thanks ! • Parallelize or vectorize all-against-all operation on a large number of matrices?

  I have approximately 5,000 matrices with the same number of rows and varying numbers of columns (20 x ~200). Each of these matrices must be compared against every other in a dynamic programming algorithm. In this question, I asked how to perform the comparison quickly and was given an excellent answer involving a 2D convolution. Serially, iteratively applying that method, like so list = who('data_matrix_prefix*') H = cell(numel(list),numel(list)); for i=1:numel(list) for j=1:numel(list) if i ~= j eval([ 'H{i,j} = compare(' char(list(i)) ',' char(list(j)) ');']); end end end is fast for small subsets of the data (e.g. for 9 matrices, 9*9 - 9 = 72 calls are made in ~1 s). However, operating on all the data requires almost 25 million calls. I have also tried using deal() to make a cell array composed entirely of the next element in data, so I could use cellfun() in a single loop: # who(), load() and struct2cell() calls place k data matrices in a 1D cell array called data. nextData = cell(k,1); for i=1:k [nextData{:}] = deal(data{i}); H{:,i} = cellfun(@compare,data,nextData,'UniformOutput',false); end Unfortunately, this is not really any faster, because all the time is in compare(). Both of these code examples seem ill-suited for parallelization. I'm having trouble figuring out how to make my variables sliced. compare() is totally vectorized; it uses matrix multiplication and conv2() exclusively (I am under the impression that all of these operations, including the cellfun(), should be multithreaded in MATLAB?). Does anyone see a (explicitly) parallelized solution or better vectorization of the problem?

  I have huge amont of geographic data represented in simple object structure consisting only structs. All of my fields are of value type. public struct Child { readonly float X; readonly float Y; readonly int myField; } public struct Parent { readonly int id; readonly int field1; readonly int field2; readonly Child[] children; } The data is chunked up nicely to small portions of Parent[]-s. Each array contains a few thousands Parent instances. I have way too much data to keep all in memory, so I need to swap these chunks to disk back and forth. (One file would result approx. 2-300KB). What would be the most efficient way of serializing/deserializing the Parent[] to a byte[] for dumpint to disk and reading back? Concerning speed, I am particularly interested in fast deserialization, write speed is not that critical. Would simple BinarySerializer good enough? Or should I hack around with StructLayout (see accepted answer)? I am not sure if that would work with array field of Parent.children. UPDATE: Response to comments - Yes, the objects are immutable (code updated) and indeed the children field is not value type. 300KB sounds not much but I have zillions of files like that, so speed does matter.

• Appending a TR to Table Not Formatting Correctly

"View Only" : ( ( $status->type == 1 ) ? "View & Mark" : "View, Mark & Edit" ) ) . "</td><td>Invited</td></tr>"; echo json_encode( array( $html, $currentStatus ) ); Then my jquery is appending this to the table: ... success: function( result ) { var resultArray = eval( result ); $( "#myTable tr:last").append( resultArray[0] ); ... } Problem is, when it prints, it prints the following extra marks: [email protected]<\/td> View Only<\/td> Invited<\/td><\/tr>","1"] If I only echo the HTML it appends to table just fine, but I cant do that because I need the $currentStatus back too to do something with it. • iPhone: Same Rows Repeated in Each Section of Grouped UITableview

  I have an app that is a list of tasks, like a to do list. The user configures the tasks and that goes to the SQLite db. The list is displayed in a tableview. The SQL table in question consists of a taskid int, groupname varchar, taskname varchar, lastcompleted datetime, nextdue datetime, weighting integer. I currently have it working by creating an array from each column in the SQL table. In the tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: method, I create the controls for each task by binding their values to the array for each column. I want to add configurable task groups that should display as the section titles. I got the task groups to display as the section headers. My problem is that all the task rows are repeated in each group under each header. How do I get the correct rows to show up only under the correct section? I'm really new to development period and took on a hobby of trying to teach myself how to develop iphone apps. So, pretty please, be a little more detailed than you normally would with a professional developer. :)

  Hi guys, I want to do some numerical stuff in Erlang like this: You've got an array with the following values: [2,3,4] In each iteration, you calculate 0.1 * [n-1] + 0.7 *[n] + 0.2 * [n+1] This becomes the new [n]. If n == 0 then [n-1] = 0. If [n] == length of array then [n] = 0. So I try an example: [2,3,4] calculations: 0.1 * 0 + 0.7 * 2 + 0.2 * 3 = 2 0.1 * 2 + 0.7 * 3 + 0.2 * 4 = 3.1 0.1 * 3 + 0.7 * 4 + 0.2 * 0 = 3.1 So [2,3,4] becomes to [2, 3.1, 3.1] after one iteration. I know how to write this in a non-functional language like C. But I have difficulties to imagine, how this could be done in Erlang. I found some tutorials on how you read a file to a list. So this is not the problem. How can I spawn different Erlang processes that each process has one element of the list? How can I do calculations by communicating with 'the neighbors', so that the neighbors know where their neigbors are generically, without specifying each? How can I collect the data into a list? Eventually, is it possible to solve that problem in Erlang at all? Thanks for your help.
