• Recommend a good DVD or BD replacement drive that can read older CD-R/DVD+R media?

  So I have a bunch of older CD-R (and a few DVD+R) discs that are either suffering from "bit rot", or a case of crappy no-name Chinese DVD drives being unable to read some or all of anymore. I just threw my last no-name DVD drive in the trash after it ejected a disk still spinning causing it to scratch to the point of being useless, so I'm looking for a replacement drive this time around with an eye for quality over a dirt cheap price. I'd prefer a BD drive, but I'll take any suggestions for good, reliable DVD or BD drives that people have reported having good success with for reading older burned media. Any takers?

• Screen flickers after resuming from hibernate with Intel GMA 3600 (Acer D270 with Intel N2600)

  Fresh system install, with correct display driver from Intel (8.14.8.1065). Clicking "Update driver" merely results in a message saying the driver was already up-to-date. After resuming from hibernate the entire screen flickers. This is especially noticeable while using IE9 (which has hardware acceleration enabled by default) on Google maps, in particular while typing in an address in the map search field (the flickering is much worse under these circumstances). Note that sleep worked fine, only hibernate causes this issue. Restarting "fixes" the problem temporarily until the next hibernate-resume. Aero is enabled. This is on Windows 7 (Pro) 32-bit, on an Acer Aspire One D270-1998, with the Intel N2600 (which has the Intel GMA 3600 built-in).

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

• What's the best way to format an external HDD for both OSX and Windows ?

  I have an external HDD (1TB) and I'd like to use it on OSX and Windows. I had another external HDD using NTFS and I used NTFS-3G on osx to write files, but I found the reading/writing very slow. Googling a bit I see many people recommend HFS+ in conjuction with HFS Explorer for Windows. Is this the best way ? Is it possible to have two partitions, one HFS+ and one NTFS ? Is it a good option or is it better to use one partition ? I've seen this thread on using UDF for USB flash drive. Would that be suited for an USB external HDD ?

• How to Figure AdSense PPC with AdWords CPC of $0.05

  Often when I am using the Adwords Keyword tool I find keywords with a CPC of $0.05... I mean VERY often. Is this like base level when it comes to PPC or is this a possible error? For example, with a few keywords I have targetted with a 0.05 CPC, I often find a PPC of 0.25 or more. Obviously, this is because my content is triggering other keywords, although it is centered around a 0.05 keyword. I have found several keywords that have over 200,000 searches using the [exact] search parameter but have a CPC of $0.05. I plan on writing content to cover these keywords, but I am trying to figure the approximate value of these keywords. 0.05 leads me to believe there are no advertisers so IF someone were to advertise and use this keyword, it would cost them ~0.05. But since there is obviously no demand for these keywords and thus they aren't getting bids, other ads MUST be shown. How can I predict the value of ads with a CPC of $0.05? Strange question I know, but I'm just trying to understand this a bit more.

• Will Software RAID And iSCSI Work For A SAN

  I am looking for a SAN solution, but can't afford even entry level solutions. Basically, the SAN is for development and a proof of concept product. The performance doesn't have to be amazing, but needs to be functional. My buddy says we should just setup sotware RAID and software iSCSI in Linux. Essentially I have a spare server with dual Xeon processors, 4GB of memory, and (2) 500GB 7200RPM drives. It's a bit old but working. I am sure there is reason people don't do software RAID and iSCSI, but will performance be usable? Thinking of configuring the drives in RAID 0 (for performance).

  At the Moment I finished the first game with my game engine(if I wanna call it like that) which is based in LWJGL. Now i'm worring if I could do crossplattforming in my engine. I build me a tool tool with a batch file to compile my project dir into an .exe . At first i'm looking to do it on Android with an comparable batch file. An link for an tutorial would be awesome! At next place there would be an renderer and audiosystem. If read that theres an OpenGL ES renderer, and I allready played a bit around with the Android SDK. But I use the Texture and Audio class in slick-util. So I thought about creating OOP classes that carry around the data and load it in an platform specific Buffer.   Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

• Memeory Leak in Windows Page file when calling a shell command

  I have an issue on our Windows 2003 x64 Build Server when invoking shell commands from a script. Each call causes a "memory leak" in the page file so it grows quite rapidly until it reaches the maximum and the machine stops working. I can reproduce the problem very nicely by running a perl script like for ($count=1; $count<5000; $count++) { system "echo huhu"; } It is independent of he scripting language as the same happens with lua: for i=1,5000 do os.execute("echo huhu") end I found somebody describing the same issue with php at http://www.issociate.de/board/post/454835/Memory_leak_occurs_when_exec%28%29_function_is_used_on_Windows_platform.html His solution: Firewall/Virus Scanner does not apply, neither are running on the machine. We can also reproduce the issue on other Developer Machines running XP 64, but not on XP 32 Bit. The guilty guy for the allocation is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs which runs all the basic Windows services. Does anybody know the issue and how to resolve it ?

• Azure Search Preview

  One of the things I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now is the development of the Azure Search system. While it’s not a full replacement for the full-text indexing service in SQL Server on-premises as yet, it’s a really, really good start. Liam Cavanagh, Pablo Castro and the team have done a great job bringing this to the preview stage and I suspect it could be quite popular. I was very impressed by how they incorporated quite a bit of feedback I gave them early on, and I’m sure that others involved would have felt the same. There are two tiers at present. One is a free tier and has shared resources; the other is currently $125/month and has reserved resources. I would like to see another tier between these two, much the same way that Azure websites work. If you have any feedback on this, now would be a good time to make it known. In the meantime, given there is a free tier, there’s no excuse to not get out and try it. • Why are some PNGs open in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency?

  Why are some 32 bit PNGs opened in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency? For instance, I grabbed a png icon file of the Stack Overflow logo at: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/wp-content/uploads/icon-so.png When opening it in Photoshop CS3, it apparently treats it as indexed color and gets rid of the alpha channel. The image on the right is a screen grab of the icon. Changing the Image mode in Photoshop to RGB doesn't change the image at all. I've tried this with a few other PNGs and it seems hit or miss. When viewed in other programs, it displays fine. left:png opened in Photoshop, right:screen grab of png from browser What gives?, does Photoshop not interpret the PNG file format correctly?

• Kinect Hacking at Microsoft Developer Days 2012 Bulgaria

  Last week I had a pleasure to speak at the Microsoft’s Developer Days 2012 in Sophia, Bulgaria. It was a great conference and I met lots of cool people there. I did a session about Kinect Hacking. My goal was to give a good understanding of Kinect inner workings, how it can be used to develop Windows applications. Later I showed examples of interesting projects utilizing the full potential the Kinect sensor. Below you can find my slides and source code of one of the demos (the one where “Szymon went to the Moon”). But I wasn’t the only one to talk about Kinect. On the 2nd day Rob Miles also did a fun session titled “Kinect Mayhem: Psychedelic Ghost Cameras, Virtual Mallets, a Kiss Detector and a Head Tapping Game” (you can watch recording of this session from TechDays Netherlands on Channel9). Later that day Yishai Galatzer made a big surprise during his session about Extending WebMatrix, and showed a plugin enabling to take control of WebMatrix with Kinect gestures. Best thing was that he wrote it during the conference, with no previous experience with Kinect SDK (I might helped him a bit to get started). Thanks for the invitation and I hope to see you soon!

• Booting Error while using 12.04 booting from GRUB

  my name is Paul. I have encountered an issue relating to GRUB booting and the booting process in general. I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my machine for quite a while. Before that, i had (before) 10.04, 11.04, 11.10, etc. I have been running Ubuntu, in general, but more specifically 12.04 for a long time with little to no problems. The problem: Earlier today, i was using my machine and then decided to take a little break. I shut down my machine (laptop, in case anyone was wondering) and left. Later, I came back ready to start it up and continue. I started it up and it took me to the Toshiba screen (like normal) then to the GRUB screen. I guessed that nothing was truly wrong, and chose the first option (something around the lines of: Ubuntu, with linux 3.22.0-35-generic). I waited for a bit and it still displayed the same purple screen. I restarted it and now chose the option like the first but with recovery at the end. Same result. Later, I waited longer and found that my computer came up with a bunch of lines of script. I waited longer but nothing new happened. What are your suggestions as to fix this problem? I will let my computer run overnight with the recovery setting and will let you know what the result is. Until then, please help. Thank you, your time and effort is greatly appreciated!

  I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

  I have the same Problem as described here: Disable spell checking in Internet Explorer 10 (Windows 8) My system: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit What I've already done: Deactivating the spelling options: (There may be minor differences between the following screenshot and the actual 8.1 display. I copied it from here because I own a German Version and I therefore thought that an English one would be simpler to understand.) I turned both options off and tried to restart IE. It's still "correcting" my texts. Searching for 'spelling correction' addons As said in the picture, this entry does not exist on my PC. (The following screenshot is taken from here) Is there any way of disabling it? I prefer an "official" solution if one is available. Otherwise, I also take any registry involving Solutions.

• SSH + MysqlDump Remote Backup Script

  I'm trying to issue a remote mysqldump command, redirect stdout to a dmp file, then tar that up. I'm a bit confused as to how to do the redirection bits over ssh: i.e. ssh [email protected] mysqldump $dbname -u admin -p > dbdump.dmp && tar cvzf dbdump.tar.gz dbdump.dmp Issues: 1) I'm not providing the password because I want it to prompt me. Will an ssh remote command deal with this? 2) What's the deal with the syntax? Do I want to use quotations, or don't I? What happens with the redirects and pipes? Do those have to be escaped or formatted in some special fashion.

• XenServer migrate machines between hosts

  I have a XenServer 5.6 Free setup with 5 VMs (Windows and Linux) using about 1.5TB of directly attached storage. Because our virtualisation needs have grown a bit, we currently are preparing a faster XenServer 6.0 Free machine with more RAM and a more storage. Again, directly attached disks. How can I migrate the VMs between XenServer machines? I don't need to keep the machines up and running during migration, but using VM export and import would definitely take too long. Would making a VM with the same configuration on new host and dd'ing the LVM volume over network be the only quick and least painful solution? Are there any "gotchas" I should look out for when doing something like this? The old machine has an AMD Phenom II, the new has Intel Xeon E5 CPUs.

  Tengo un servidor con 8GB de RAM de 32 bits, instale windows server 2003 enterprise y sql server 2005 enterprise, el Sistema Operativo reconoce los 8GB, pero el Sql Server solo usaba 1.6 GB de memoria, entonces agregue al boot.ini el parametro /PAE y en Sql Server le habilite AWE de 1GB a 5GB, despues de reiniciar el servidor el Sistema que usa la BD estaba mas rapido mejoro bastante, pero en memoria el Sql Server solo usa 100 MB, veo la cantidad de memoria usada en el Administrador de Tareas de Windows, y no se si esta funcionando AWE o que sucedio?   I recently bought the above moniter. i am now using the DVI port in the moniter but the picture quality stil seems average like the same when i was using the VGA port. THere hasnt been a noticeable change. I am using the DVI output from my graphics card but i thought the picture quality should be alot more High Def than what it is. im just really disappointed in the out come as was expecting nearly High Def quality from my new moniter but just seems a bit normal. Could i need to change any settings?

• XNA Windows Resolution / Mouse Position Bug

  In XNA, when in windowed mode and resolution (set via PreferredBackBufferWidth/Height) is close to the resolution of the display, the view is distorted (zoomed in a bit)and the mouse coordinates are wrong. Here is what it looks like when I draw a bunch of lines to the screen. (Normal, Error on my ASUS Notebook G73Jh, Error on my EEE PC 1001P) In the top left of the screen the mouse position is correct, but the further you get away the more out of sync it becomes. Here are some images of the mouse in different positions and the game drawing a circle underneath where it thinks the mouse is. (Top Left, Bottom Right) If you shrink the resolution by a couple pixels then it goes back to working like normal, my first though at a fix was to limit the max resolution to a little smaller than the display resolution. I figured out the maximum resolution that works in a couple different modes, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern that would allow me to determine it based off the display resolution. Computer | Screen Resolution | Max Error-Free | Difference ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1920x1080 | 1924x1059 | +4x-21 ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1024x600 | 1018x568 | -6x-32 EEE PC 1001P | 1024x600 | 1020x574 | -4x-26 Because the differences don't form a pattern I can't hack in a solution, the one even has +4 which baffles me. Here is a project that demonstrates the problem, just set the resolution to the resolution of your display. Any ideas on how I might fix this issue? As an insteresting aside, I tried to use FRAPS to capture a video of the issue but fraps actually records without distortion or mouse offset.

  I'm kind of stuck at this part and was hoping that I'd get some assistance. I'm building a highscores page in PHP, that's going great, it works. however, I dislike the idea of "index.php?skill=name" and therefore wanted a bit of SEO in this. I have successfully replaced the url with a more friendly version: "highscores/skill/name" And this is where the problem starts, I have added pagination to the highscores and the page is read from the HTTP_GET page variable ($_GET['page']). I dislike the idea of "highscores/skill/name&page=2" and was hoping if you guys could assist me to make the url like the following: Page 1, so accessing the file without declaring the page number: DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name Page 1 so now the page variable is needed:DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name/2 As you can tell the "2" will define page 2 and load the correct data for page 2. However, I'm having much trouble in my .htaccess file to configure it this way. RewriteRule ^highscores\/skill\/(.*?)(\/(.*?)*)$ highscores/skills.php?skill=$1&page=$2 [L] # Skills page That is my latest attempt in order to get it to work, unfortunately it does not work, it makes the page look horrible (CSS doesn't work) and it doesn't go to the page specified on the URL. • Is there software that lets me drag windows between two PCs? (there is!)

  I'm looking for a preferably free program that is similar to MaxiVista, which lets you extend you desktop to another desktops screen on the same network. But with MaxiVista you have to extend the entire screen. I'd like to just drag one window onto the other computers screen without extending the desktop. So on top of the other computer's windows. Kind of like a cross between MaxiVista and Windows 7' XP mode where you can run XP programs on the windows 7 desktop. EDIT: I am pleased to announce this is possible, though the windows is poor quality (8-bit color) but I believe thats just because MetaVNC isn't very up to date.

  I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time.
