• Install DC again after removing on exchange server

  I had a DC and Exchange 2010 installed on the same machine. I removed the DC role, and Exchange server went crazy. I tried to install the DC role again to fix the problem but ran into this error when running DCPROMO: Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=DC1,CN=Servers,CN=Manukau,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=AccessGroupnz,DC=com on the remote AD DC Server1.AccessGroupnz.com. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions. "The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure." Do you think I need to run this in an elevated command prompt, or change credentials somewhere to domain admin? Or is it something else?

• Partimage and autocheck problem when restoring Windows XP from image

  I'm trying to create an image of Windows XP and clone it to several partitions on the same hard drive using Partimage. I seem to be running into a problem when I restore the image onto another partition - when I boot into the OS from the partition I just restored, it brings up this message during the boot sequence: autochk program not found - skipping autocheck, and then after this, the OS reboots the PC and the whole process repeats itself in an infinite loop. After doing some Google search, it is suggested that this loop was caused by the partition being hidden or the mountmgr.sys file is missing. I checked my configuration and verified that this was not the case. I'm just wondering: Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution for it? Is this what happens when you try to restore the image to a different partition on the same hard disk or is Partimage itself the problem? Should I be trying out a different partition cloning software?

  Symptoms: Server becomes unresponsive - Increase in load, all services stop Loss of connectivity - Ping/SSH Flush MySQL hosts after reboot - As MySQL refuses new connections Intermittent Apache crashes Generally happens early morning hours - 2 days of the week are however excluded Changes made: Updated the OS - to Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Not sure if the MySQL server was also updated in the process Current MySQL version - mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.63, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.1 Updated Plesk from 10.4.4 Update #47 to 11.0.9 Update #23 Rebooted on almost daily basis All crons stopped for the times corresponding to the server crashes Created a MySQL log to monitor the lock times on queries Possible causes: Failing hardware Incorrect software configuration (MySQL, Apache etc) Responsibilities: Small webserver Runs our billing system - WHMCS Responsible for CRONs Bulk-email solution - No delivery times coincide with server crashes Proposed solutions: Move machine over to VM Format and restore the Plesk server backup and take it from there? Side notes: Seems to be a general Apache failure across all our linux servers - Intermittent problem Are we doing something fundamentally wrong in the Apache config? • Performance difference between MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) vs Air (1.7 GHz)?

  I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

• NFS Client reports Permission Denied, Server reports Permission Granted

  I have two RedHat 4 Servers. The client is 4.6, the server is 4.5. I'm attempting to mount a share from the server, onto the client via NFS. The /etc/exports configuration is as follows: /opt/data/config bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) /opt/data/db bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) exportfs returns these (among other) shares, nfs is running according to ps output. I've been attempting to use autofs on the client, but have opted to just mount the share manually considering the issues I'm having. So, I issue the mount request: mount dist:/opt/data/config /mnt/config mount: dist:/opt/data/config failed, reason given by server: Permission denied Ok, so let's see what the server has to say for itself. May 6 23:17:55 dist mountd[3782]: authenticated mount request from bkup:662 for /opt/data/config (/opt/data/config) It says it allowed the mount to take place. How can I diagnose why the client and server are disagreeing on the result?

  How can I programmatically get the wireless LAN configuration of a machine and use netsh to setup new profile? I am having trouble getting the netsh command to set the ssid of a new card. I installed the drivers and plugged it in. I see in ipconfig it says the "media is disconnected" (fair enough). I then send the following command netsh wlan connect name=profile1 ssid=myNetwork interface="Wireless Network Connection 2" problem is I get an error "There is no profile "profile1" assigned to the specified interface. What is a profile for a wireless card? What should I set it to? How can I get my SSID set and connected for the card?

• TechEd 2012: Day 3 &ndash; Build Me A Solution

  While digesting my lunch it was time to digest some TFS Build information. While much of my time is spent wearing my developer’s hat I am still a jack of all trades and automated builds are an important aspect of any project.  Because of this I was looking forward to finding out what new features are available in the latest release of Team Foundation Server. The first feature that caught my attention is the TFS Admin Client.  After being used to dealing with NAnt in the past it is nice to see a build a configuration GUI that is so flexible and well thought out.  The bonus is that it the tools that are incorporated in Visual Studio 2012 are just as feature rich.  Life is good. Since automated builds are the hub of your development process in a continuous integration shop I was really interested in the process related options. The biggest value add that I noticed was merge gated check-ins.  Merge or batch gated check-ins are an interesting concept.  If the build breaks with all the changes then TFS will run separate builds for each of the check-ins.  This ability to identify the actual offending check-in can save a lot of time and gray hair. • Cannot install icaclient due to problem with ia32-libs

  I have a problem installing the package icaclient on 13.10 Saucy Salamander 64bit. It seems that there is a problem with ia32-libs and other dependencies. marc@PinballWizard:~$ sudo dpkg -i Downloads/icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb [sudo] password for marc: Selecting previously unselected package icaclient.   is it possible that 1024 and 2048 block size read speed is faster than 4096 and 8192 block? I'm using lsi 9361-8i with RAID 10 , with 8 x Kingston E50 250G. result: 1024 = Write: 2,251 MB/s Read: 2,625 MB/s 2048 = Write: 2,141 MB/s Read: 3,672 MB/s 4096 = Write: 2,147 MB/s Read: 231 MB/s 8192 = Write: 2,147 MB/s Read: 442 MB/s is there any possible? and below is the reading when i simply want to test out the RAID 10 function and disaster test by taking out one of the 250G harddisk. the result is different like below: Result: 1024 = Write: 825 MB/s Read: 1,139 MB/s 2048 = Write: 797 MB/s Read: 1,312 MB/s 4096 = Write: 911 MB/s Read: 1,342 MB/s 8192 = Write: 786 MB/s Read: 1,204 MB/s and the result for 4096 and 8192block are different? can any one explain to me is it normal? or I need to do some tuning/configuration? will it affect my host linux performance?

  I followed these steps to install Apache 2.4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04, but it seems Apache is not installed, here's what I did (I followed the steps in this site http://www.discusswire.com/apache-2-4-installation-ubuntu/): sudo apt-get install build-essential sudo apt-get build-dep apache2 wget http://apache.mirrors.pair.com/httpd/httpd-2.4.2.tar.gz tar -xzvf httpd-2.4.2.tar.gz && cd httpd-2.4.2 sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-deflate --enable-proxy --enable-proxy-balancer --enable-proxy-http --with-mpm=prefork sudo make sudo make install when I tried to start by issuing sudo /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start at terminal, I got the following warning: "AH00558: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1. Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message" and when I typed top at terminal, the apache is not there. I also tried to go to http://localhost/ or 127.0.0.1 or even 127.0.1.1 it showed "Can't establish connection to server ..." message. ps: I checked the error log and it showed "[Fri Jul 27 15:49:00.703901 2012] [proxy_balancer:emerg] [pid 20781] AH01177: Failed to lookup provider 'shm' for 'slotmem': is mod_slotmem_shm loaded?? • Remote Access Problems with DRAC 5 on Dell PowerEdge 1950

  Today I received my first Dell PowerEdge 1950 server with a DRAC 5 card. On my local network I have static configurations on my Linux systems using this for instance: iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.210 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 For the DRAC card, I configured the LAN like this: address 192.168.1.215 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 For the advanced LAN settings I used dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 I've tried many different IP addresses, but cannot communicate with the card. Is there anyone who might know if I have configuration issues, or maybe if the card might be bad?

• "Disk boot failure" error after installing Windows 7 on SSD

  I have a system with 3 SATA drives which runs fine. Got a new SSD drive and wanted to install a fresh Windows-7 on it. So I removed the boot drive and replaced it with the SSD drive. Installed Windows and when it was done, rebooted and now I get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" error message. I reinstall again and still same message. Removed the SSD and put back the original drive and I got the same message!! I checked the BIOS and things look good. Something is wrong. Two questions: 1- Why isn't the new Windows booting from the SSD? 2- Why isn't the machine booting using the previous working configuration anymore, after removing the SSD? I did connect it during the second Windows installation but it was the last drive in the SATA connector. Would Windows installer mess with its MBR sector?

  I have a router with OpenWRT that I want to resolve IP addressing with DHCP without setting a default gateway. I have added a DHCP-Option parameter with value 3,0.0.0.0 that is supposed to set the default gateway by DHCP. Instead, the router IP is defined as default gateway for DHCP connections. How can I set a null default gateway (0.0.0.0) for connections configuration by DHCP? As said in a comment: I want this router to service a VirtualBox network that doesn't set a default gateway via DHCP.

• automatic IIS worker process recycle fails

  The server is set to its default configuration to recycle the app pool every 1740 minutes. When this happens the following message is logged: A worker process with process id of '1234' serving application pool 'XX' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. Directly after logging this message, the web site is unresponsive. The only way to get it back online is by running iisreset manually. Does anyone know a fix for this behavior, other than turning the recycle feature off? Is it a known problem?

• Mandatory Profiles on a Server 2003 TS Box

  I have a Windows Server 2003 box which will be acting as a terminal server. It will actually be running Citrix, but I don't believe that to be relevant here. There has been a request for every user to use a single mandatory profile. I've used mandatory profiles before, but there have been generally different profiles for different users so I've always used the "Terminal Services Profile" tab to good effect. What I'd like this time is a single setting, such as a Group Policy or similar that simply forces every non-domain admin user logging on to the box into using the mandatory profile. We'll be using Folder Redirection to take care of everything else. I'm aware of the following GPO: Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Terminal Services Set path for TS Roaming Profiles But, as that's a computer policy, will it not apply to all users including administrators? If so, is it possible to exclude admins somehow?

• Available Instance types for marketplace ami's

  I based my autoscaling AMI's on the Turnkey Linux nginx AMI from the marketplace. I am now unable to select any of the newer generation instance types; for instance, my autoscaling uses m3.large type but I'd really like it to use the c3.xlarge type but every time I try to create a c3.xlarge instance with my AMI I get errors; The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. My question is; Can I override this? I'm not using TKL support or any of their services, just the AMI. If I can't override it, do I have any other options besides creating a brand new AMI from scratch to use?

• DSL PPPoE connection not working?

  I use a wired PPPoE connection to connect to the Internet. What I need to do on Windows to connect to it is put in static IP address, gateway, subnet mask and DNS servers for my LAN card. Next I have to create a dialer for a PPPoE connection, put in my user name, the service name and the password, and "dial" this connection. And it works fine. On Ubuntu 10.04, however, I have tried setting things up in a similar fashion - put in all static addresses for the "automatic" wired connection, then put in user name, service name, password for a "DSL" connection. It worked for a while, then stopped. I have tried putting in all the details within the DSL configuration dialog, same thing happened - it worked for a while, then stopped. I have tried deleting the ethernet connection and only keeping the DSL one with all the numbers put in place, same thing happened - it worked for a while, then stopped. Each of the times, when it connected, it connected randomly, after trying a few times, and either stopped working within a few minutes, or after I had rebooted. I have deleted and remade the connection dozens of times - even with different names, but nothing seems to be working. I have also tried pppoeconf from the terminal, didn't work. I have checked /var/log/kern.log, but nothing changes in the file when I try to connect. I have also checked /sbin/route, but gedit can't even open it (says it can't figure the character encoding...). The "connection established" notification pops up from the top right corner, the same way as when the computer is actually connected to a network. Can anyone figure what's wrong and how it can be solved?

• off-the-shelf HDD in Dell Optiplex 755 - Invalid Replacement - Press F1 when rebooting

  Hi, I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• SBS 2011 backup

  I have a freshly installed SBS 2011 server that I need to configure for backup. I tried using the SBS backup configuration tool, but it didn't want to use anything but an external drive. Previously, with our W2K3 servers, I used NTBackup to back up the server to disk and then copied the backup files to a remote server on a regular basis. It doesn't appear this is possible with the built-in backup tools in SBS 2011. Am I missing something? What other options are there that won't cost an arm and a leg?

• anyone doing php-fpm and APC? cache files missing in /tmp

  I have been using xcache for a long time. Recently I put together php-fpm and nginx. I see apc is installed and enabled in the configuration. I was assuming that apc will automatically opcode the files and store it somewhere. According to config it should be in /tmp/apx.xxxx but there is no such thing there. What am i missing? any clues to investigate would be of much help. Please note I am using php 5.3 fpm. thanks mates. UPDATE: i looked at apc.php it says things are fine. will just have to take its word for it.

  Hello, There are two different web-apps running on two (physically) different servers on our network... one of IIS and another one on Apache - both on port 80 since two machines are accessible by different IPs on our internal network. Now I want to expose both these services to the world. My idea is to somehow make the incoming connection redirect to the appropriate server based on user's choice of subdomain. Example xxx.domain.com maps to the IIS (Internal IP: 1.2.3.4) yyy.domain.com maps to Apache (Internal IP: 5.6.7.8) To the world, both these servers will share the same public IP. What kind of a configuration am I looking at and how do I go about trapping the subdomain requests and redirecting to the appropriate server? Thanks, m^e

• Exchange 2010 SP2 Not Allowing Logon for Users with Expired Passwords

  When we provision users we set the "User must change password at next logon" flag and instruct them to go to OWA to login for the first time and change their password. Using the registry setting ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled as explained here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684904.aspx worked well prior to SP2 installation. This allows users with 'expired' passwords to logon and forces a password change before they can access OWA. We just installed Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 and now it's no longer working. Users with this flag set ('expired' passwords) can't login in at all unless we clear the flag. FYI here's the registry key configuration as set now with SP2 installed: Any suggestions as to how I might fix this? Or did MS break this feature in Service Pack 2?

  I am trying to install VirtualBox on my Ubuntu. I first tried to sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose in a terminal, but after the configuration step, it fails with an error: No suitable module for running kernel found When proceeding with starting virtualbox, I get this error: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I tried the package from http://www.virtualbox.org/, but starting VirtualBox fails with: WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.38-8-generic-pae) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I ran sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but it fails too: * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ] * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS Error!
