  • Does a System.Collection.Collection<T> wrap a IList<T> or enumerate over the IList<T> or simply wra

    - by Brian Triplett
If I am exposing a internal member via a Collection property via: public Collection<T> Entries { get { return new Collection<T>(this.fieldImplimentingIList<T>); } } When this property is called what happens? For example what happens when the following lines of code are called: T test = instanceOfAbove.Entries[i]; instanceOfAbove[i] = valueOfTypeT; It's clear that each time this property is called a new reference type is created but what acctually happens? Does it simply wrap the IList<T> underneath, does it enumerate over the IList<T> and to create a new Collection<T> instance? I'm concerned about performance if this property is used in a for loop.

  • What sql server isolation level should I choose to prevent concurrent reads?

    - by Brian Bolton
I have the following transaction: SQL inserts a 1 new record into a table called tbl_document SQL deletes all records matching a criteria in another table called tbl_attachment SQL inserts multiple records into the tbl_attachment Until this transaction finishes, I don't want others users to be aware of the (1) new records in tbl_document, (2) deleted records in tbl_attachment, and (3) modified records in tbl_attachment. Would Read Committed Isolation be the correct isolation level?

  • Is this a bug or something I am doing wrong?

    - by Brian Gideon
I cannot imagine how this is anything other than a bug, but since I do not currently have a login for the MS Connect website I will ask here first. I have Visual Studio 2008 SP 1 with all post SP1 hotfixes I could find relating to the crash installed. Can you reproduce the following crash? 1) Create a new "WPF Application" project using VB as the language (though I suspect it will happen in C# as well). 2) Enter the following code in the Window1.xaml.vb file. Friend MustInherit Class A End Class Friend MustInherit Class A(Of T) Inherits A End Class 3) Add a namespace declaration the Window1.xaml file so that it looks like the following. <Window x:Class="Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:WpfApplication1" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300"> <Grid> </Grid> </Window> 4) Now attempt to edit the xaml file by opening a new xml tag via the < character. 5) CRASH! Edit: Microsoft has confirmed this bug. The issue still exists in VS2010 beta 2, but will be fixed in the next release.

  • How do I get user input into a PackageMaker package?

    - by Brian Postow
I'm trying to create an install package. I've got all my components, and I think I understand most of the process. I want to have an install/set-up script that is run as part of the install. I planned to put it either as a post-install action or a post-install script. The problem is that I need user-input. I can't figure out how to either get user input into the script, or how to add a page in the install UI that has a place for user input and then pass that on to the script. I guess, I could write an apple-script with a dialog to ask the question, and then pass that information on to my shell script (or, write the whole thing in the applescript) but that seems unnecessarily complicated... Is there a normal way to do this? Thanks

  • Relative Position in PHP between 2 points (Lat/Long)

    - by Brian H
I have a database of airports with Latitude and Longitude for each point. I want to run a PHP script to find all airports that are nearby a given airport, with their distance and relative direction. I.e. for Airport KLDJ (40-37-02.810N 074-14-40.539W) Airport Nearby KJFK - John F Kennedy Airport (21.2 nm NE) (40-38-23.104N 073-46-44.132W) I have used code from http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to find distance, and tried to use it to find bearing, which might not be right. //BEARING RHUMB LINE $phi = log(tan($lat2/2+pi/4)/tan($lat1/2+pi/4)); $distance['bearing'] = (rad2deg(atan2($theta, $phi)) +180) % 360; I basically want to run all points through this script and find the distance, which I have already, but then the direction. (i.e. N, S, W, E, NW, SW, NE, SE)

  • XCode: compiling doesn't always replace plist?

    - by Brian Postow
I have an application and I will sometimes just change the plist, say to change the version number. Sometimes I'll actually make a change to the code, AND the version number....in the latter case, SOMETIMES the version number of the resulting app will change, in the former it will never change. The only way I've found that surely does it right is when I delete the .app before compiling. In case it matters, the resulting app is being put in a folder that isn't in the build folder, but I doubt that that's relevant. any thoughts?

  • Do invariant assertions fit into C# programming?

    - by P.Brian.Mackey
In the book coders at work, the author asks "How do you use invariants in your code". Please explain what this question means. I saw class invariants on wiki, but the example is in Java and I am not skilled enough in Java to relate this example to C#. .NET 4.0 introduces invariance, covariance, and contravariance and is well explained here. Invariance is so broad. The authors usage of the word seems unit test related. For those that read the book, what does the author mean? Are we talking about making an assumption and simply testing the validity after the unit test?

  • Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

    - by Brian L
Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

  • Javascript iframe caching issue

    - by Brian
I hava an iframe which loads some javascript via javascript. In internet explorer only, this works if and only if IE has a cached copy of the javascript. This means that reloading the page (or otherwise triggering the script to run again, if it's stuck in a function or whatever) will cause this code to work, otherwise it will not. In particular, the document.write call fails to happen. Main Page: <iframe height = "200" width = "200" id = "happy"> </iframe> <script type="text/javascript"> var a = document.getElementById("happy"); scripttxt = '<a href="#" id="joy">JOY</a><'+'script type="text/javascript" src="fail.js"></'+'script>'; a.src = "about:blank"; a.contentWindow.document.open(); a.contentWindow.document.write("<h3>Preview:</h3>" + scripttxt + ""); a.contentWindow.document.close(); </script> fail.js: document.write(document.getElementById("joy")); I realize I could use conditional comments to have IE skip document.open() and document.close() in the script of Main Page, but having IE skip document.open() and document.close() feels a bit hacky (Edit)...and breaks other things in IE.

  • Recommendations on a WPF Docking Library

    - by Brian Stewart
We are implementing an application that needs dockable windows, similar to Visual Studio 2005/2008, but with multiple "docking sites", unlike VS's single one. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good library for this - either OSS or commercial? I am aware that Infragistics has one, as well as Divelement's SandDock and WPF-Dock from DevComponents, as well as ActiPro's Docking & MDI product. There is also one on CodeProject. Has anyone used any of these libraries? Was the experience good or bad? If you have experience with one of them, does it support multiple "docking sites"?

  • String concatenation produces incorrect output in Python?

    - by Brian
I have this code: filenames=["file1","FILE2","file3","fiLe4"] def alignfilenames(): #build a string that can be used to add labels to the R variables. #format goal: suffixes=c(".fileA",".fileB") filestring='suffixes=c(".' for filename in filenames: filestring=filestring+str(filename)+'",".' print filestring[:-3] #now delete the extra characters filestring=filestring[-1:-4] filestring=filestring+')' print "New String" print str(filestring) alignfilenames() I'm trying to get the string variable to look like this format: suffixes=c(".fileA",".fileB".....) but adding on the final parenthesis is not working. When I run this code as is, I get: suffixes=c(".file1",".FILE2",".file3",".fiLe4" New String ) Any idea what's going on or how to fix it?

  • Create a jQueryUI 1.8 Button menu

    - by Brian M. Hunt
Now that jQueryUI 1.8 is out, I was browsing through the updates and came across the new Button widget, and in particular one of the demos with the SplitButton with a dropdown. This demo seems to suggest that the Button widget could be used to create a dropdown menu here. As a matter of discussion, I was wondering what ways there are to go about creating a dropdown menu with this new Button widget. Cheers.

  • Why is lua crashing after extracting zip files?

    - by Brian T Hannan
I have the following code but it crashes every time it reaches the end of the function, but it successfully extracts all the files and puts them in the right location. require "zip" function ExtractZipAndCopyFiles(zipPath, zipFilename, destinationPath) local zfile, err = zip.open(zipPath .. zipFilename) -- iterate through each file insize the zip file for file in zfile:files() do local currFile, err = zfile:open(file.filename) local currFileContents = currFile:read("*a") -- read entire contents of current file local hBinaryOutput = io.open(destinationPath .. file.filename, "wb") -- write current file inside zip to a file outside zip if(hBinaryOutput)then hBinaryOutput:write(currFileContents) hBinaryOutput:close() end end zfile:close() end -- call the function ExtractZipAndCopyFiles("C:\\Users\\bhannan\\Desktop\\LUA\\", "example.zip", "C:\\Users\\bhannan\\Desktop\\ZipExtractionOutput\\") Why does it crash every time it reaches the end?

  • Is there a way to touch-enable scrolling in a WPF ScrollViewer?

    - by Brian Sullivan
I'm trying to create a form in a WPF application that will allow the user to use iPhone-like gestures to scroll through the available fields. So, I've put all my form controls inside a StackPanel inside a ScrollViewer, and the scrollbar shows up as expected when there are too many elements to be shown on the screen. However, when I try to test this on my touch-enabled device, a panning gesture (placing a finger down on the surface and dragging it upward) does not move the viewable area down as I would expect. When I simply put a number of elements inside a ListView, the touch gestures work just fine. Is there any way to enable the same kind of behavior in a ScrollViewer? My window is structured like this: <Window x:Class="TestTouchScrolling.MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525" Loaded="Window_Loaded"> <Grid> <ScrollViewer Name="viewer" VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Auto"> <StackPanel Name="panel"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Label>Label 1:</Label> <TextBox Name="TextBox1"></TextBox> </StackPanel> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Label>Label 2:</Label> <TextBox Name="TextBox2"></TextBox> </StackPanel> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Label>Label 3:</Label> <TextBox Name="TextBox3"></TextBox> </StackPanel> <!-- Lots more like these --> </StackPanel> </ScrollViewer> </Grid>

  • Third party multipart request in playframework

    - by Brian
I'm making an application to post photos to yfrog and twitpic and I am having a little trouble figuring out how to set the parameters. Here is my code: public static Result index() { HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); WSRequestHolder holder = WS.url("http://api.twitpic.com/2/upload.json"); holder.setHeader("Authorization", ""); return async(holder.post("").map(new Function<WS.Response, Result>() { public Result apply(WS.Response response) { return ok(response.getBody()); } })); } Now, I don't expect this to actually get an ok response from the server, as I am just testing the responses that I get back from the server, and that is one that says I need to provide the api key. I figured as much, but I'm not sure of the syntax for providing that parameter, as I need to also give the name of the file and the file. I tried setting holder.post("key=somekey"), with the hope that I would get a different error message (like the key you provided is invalid) but I just get the same error. I'm assuming that I probably need to send it in the for of a multipart request, but I am not very experienced with this kind of request and can't find any play documentation on how to create a multipart request, other than in an html form. Any suggestions and help will be much appreciated. And fyi, I do know that there are yfrog and twitpic java classes to handle this kind of stuff, but I want to do it myself, more so for learning how to do this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance!

  • Is closing/disposing an SqlDataReader needed if you are already closing the sqlconnection?

    - by Brian
I noticed This question, but my question is a bit more specific. Is there any advantage to using using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) { // dostuff } } instead of using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(); // dostuff } Obviously it does matter run more than one command with the same connection, since closing an SqlDataReader is more efficient than closing and reopening a connection (calling conn.Close();conn.Open(); will also free up the connection). I see many people insist that failure to close the DataReader means leaving open connection resources around, but doesn't that only apply if you don't close the connection?

  • Determine calling executable in Python

    - by Brian Rosner
I am trying to find the best way of re-invoking a Python script within itself. Currently it is working like http://github.com/benoitc/gunicorn/blob/master/gunicorn/arbiter.py#L285. The START_CTX is created at http://github.com/benoitc/gunicorn/blob/master/gunicorn/arbiter.py#L82-86. The code is relying on sys.argv[0] as the "caller". However, this fails in cases where it is invoked with: python script.py ... This case does work: python ./script.py ... because the code uses os.chdir before running os.execlp. I did notice os.environ["_"], but I am not sure how reliable that would be. Another possible case is to check if sys.argv[0] is not on PATH and is not executable and use sys.executable when calling os.execlp. Any thoughts on a better approach solving this issue?

  • Sales figures not displayed in form

  • Low-level Keyboard Hooks/SendInput with Winkey+L possible? (workstation lockout is intercepted in Vi

    - by Brian Jorgensen
I work on a project called UAWKS (Unofficial Apple Wireless Keyboard Support) that helps Windows users use Apple's bluetooth keyboard. One of the main goals of UAWKS is to swap the Cmd key (which behaves as Winkey in Windows) with Ctrl, allowing users to do Cmd+C for copy, Cmd+T for new tab, etc. It is currently developed using AutoHotkey, which worked pretty well under Windows XP. However, on Vista and Windows 7, Cmd+L causes problems: Regardless of low-level keyboard hooks, Winkey+L is always intercepted by Windows and normally locks the workstation... You can disable workstation locking with this registry hack, but pressing Winkey+L still can't be rebound in AHK Pressing Winkey+L leaves Winkey in the Keydown state until the next (additional) Winkey Up. Simulating a Keyup event doesn't seem to work either! It seems that Winkey+L is a special chord that messes everything else up. I've looked through the AHK source code, and they try to address this problem in SendKey() in keyboard_mouse.cpp (near line 883 in v1.0.48.05), but it doesn't work. I wrote up my own low-level keyboard hook application in C#, and I see the same problem. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a workaround?

  • Steps needed to install a PHP application (Mantis) on Windows Home Server - How please?

    - by Brian Frost
I'm using Windows Home Server and have already managed to install SVN on it to allow me to use Tortoise SVN on client PC's sharing a repository on the server via SVN's service and port. I'd now like to install a bug tracker hosted on this server. I'm not fussy about which one but I saw Mantis - which is a PHP application and looks ok for my purpose. This is where I get weak on such stuff - what steps do I need to do to install and configure PHP (and presumably MySql to get mantis working? It is an http application. As an alternate answer, I'd be happy to use another - more easily installed - bug tracker that has a server service and a port of its own. I'll appreciate any comments.

  • Updating UISearchDisplayController with Core Data results using GCD

    - by Brian Halpin
I'm having trouble displaying the results from Core Data in my UISearchDisplayController when I implement GCD. Without it, it works, but obviously blocks the UI. In my SearchTableViewController I have the following two methods: - (BOOL)searchDisplayController:(UISearchDisplayController *)controller shouldReloadTableForSearchString:(NSString *)searchString { // Tell the table data source to reload when text changes [self filterContentForSearchText:searchString]; // Return YES to cause the search result table view to be reloaded. return YES; } // Update the filtered array based on the search text -(void)filterContentForSearchText:(NSString*)searchText { // Remove all objects from the filtered search array [self.filteredLocationsArray removeAllObjects]; NSPredicate *predicate = [CoreDataMaster predicateForLocationUsingSearchText:@"Limerick"]; CoreDataMaster *coreDataMaster = [[CoreDataMaster alloc] init]; // Filter the array using NSPredicate self.filteredLocationsArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray: [coreDataMaster fetchResultsFromCoreDataEntity:@"City" UsingPredicate:predicate]]; } You can probably guess that my problem is with returning the array from [coreDataMaster fetchResultsFromCoreDataEntity]. Below is the method: - (NSArray *)fetchResultsFromCoreDataEntity:(NSString *)entity UsingPredicate:(NSPredicate *)predicate { NSMutableArray *fetchedResults = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; dispatch_queue_t coreDataQueue = dispatch_queue_create("com.coredata.queue", DISPATCH_QUEUE_SERIAL); dispatch_async(coreDataQueue, ^{ NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; NSEntityDescription *entityDescription = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:entity inManagedObjectContext:self.managedObjectContext]; NSSortDescriptor *nameSort = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"name" ascending:YES]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:nameSort, nil]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entityDescription]; [fetchRequest setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; // Check if predicate is set if (predicate) { [fetchRequest setPredicate:predicate]; } NSError *error = nil; NSArray *fetchedManagedObjects = [self.managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:fetchRequest error:&error]; for (City *city in fetchedManagedObjects) { [fetchedResults addObject:city]; } NSDictionary *userInfo = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject:[NSArray arrayWithArray:fetchedResults] forKey:@"results"]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:@"fetchResultsComplete" object:nil userInfo:userInfo]; }); return [NSArray arrayWithArray:fetchedResults]; } So the thread hasn't finished executing by the time it returns the results to self.filteredLocationsArray. I've tried added a NSNotification which passes the NSDictionary to this method: - (void)updateSearchResults:(NSNotification *)notification { NSDictionary *userInfo = notification.userInfo; NSArray *array = [userInfo objectForKey:@"results"]; self.filteredLocationsArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:array]; [self.tableView reloadData]; } I've also tried refreshing the searchViewController like [self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView reloadData]; but to no avail. I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction and show me where I might be going wrong. Thanks
