• Reputable web host in mainland China? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We currently have a rather poorly set up Windows 2003 box with little to no support based in Shanghai; with no control panel/mail server. I am told for legal/business reasons the host must be based in the same location as the company for the website; but this could well be misinformation. Are there any well-known, quality hosts in China that offer reliable English-speaking support? We did consider GoDaddy on the west coast of America, but were informed of the risk of the site being shut down without any notice. We don't have any technically-minded contacts out there to advise, and hoping that someone will have some more experience in this department. Thank you.

  Pre: I'm new with Maven. I used a lot of ant before. Qst: I decided to switch my project to maven since there are a lot of dependencies. But I have custom step in package phase (I'm BB dev - packing and signing) which is not available in maven yet. To process these tasks I have to download additional execs/jars.   I am in my final year of college and I have to put forward some sort of thesis for my final year project. The project is a web based attendance system that I am building for the college. I have it about 70% complete in Java. After completing it in Java, the plan is for me to rewrite the server bit in Erlang and then release the bitter rivals in a head to head cage match. The idea being that there is some sort of grounds for comparison. There are a few hurdles along the way, such as me learning Erlang. I understand that a performance comparison like this isn't strictly scientific as there are many factors such as the programmer (myself); the hardware it runs on; etc... but it is meant to be a reasonable comparison of the merits of using Java vs. Erlang for web development. I need help in identifying what the relevant questions are that my project could address. Even though the project scope is fixed, I am trying to shoehorn in some worthwhile scientific inquiries.

• Need help with gimp 2.8 (cpu not used to full capacity) [closed]

  I know this isn't the right place to ask this question but maybe some one here can point me out to were I should place this question (or help me fix it :)). Since I updated Gimp to 2.8 (and let me start by saying how happy I am with the new gimp) I have notice that Gimp only uses 35% max of my CPU power. I have tried changing settings, assigning only one CPU to Gimp (both in gimp preference and in windblows task manager). No matter what settings I choose it only uses 35% of the cpu. If I assign just one Core to it then Gimp will use 100% of that core (which is about 35% of a three core processor I have. Any thoughts? I am using Windblows 7 64 bit, gimp 2.8.0, AMD a6-3500 cpu. I also use Ubuntu (am going to see if it works the same there). Any help would be great.

But, out of the folks that I admire and aspire to be like, the difference isn't so much quality of code, but the fact that they can pump out reams of good quality code very quickly. Of course, they've been at it far longer than I have. Is it possible to learn to code faster without compromising quality? Or is that something that only comes with time and experience?

When I call the number that I want it says "this number has not been allocated" I have looked up and found the company that owns that number. How do I go about acquiring that number from the company. I spoke with someone who sells major phone packages and he said that if I signed up with them he could get the number for me. He said that there is a change of ownership form that the send to get the number. So I know it can be done. • Limiting my heavy thinking to my job [closed]

  This might be a weird problem which is only to a half relevant to actual programming, but hopefully there are people here that knows what I'm talking about. Basicly I'm proud of how I can deal with coding problems and fix them in short notice and many other aspects like building new systems and such. I'm fast on finding solutions and I often think about the impact my changes does to existing systems and so on, therefor preventing problem from arising at all and such. I am simply happy with how my mind operates when it comes to programming and I wouldn't want to change it at all. The problem, however is when I'm not programming. I find myself rather limited in social situations. I can't determine if it is through programming, but I sometimes think way to much about the consequences when it comes to being social. I know from own experience that most times you earn by not thinking about consequences, but it's hard for me not to. Often my friends tells me "I think too much" and even though I agree, I can't seem to change this behavior. My brain wants to think, and it likes to overthink simple stuff. Does anyone recognize the bad habit of not leaving advanced thinking at work, and in what way do you deal with it? If this isn't a suitable place to ask this question, I apologize and hope you may point me to the right site.

  Do you think we'll ever see an IL (or other bytecode) processing unit? It sounds possible and would have a major benefit, because we wouldn't need the JITter. This isn't the same as compiling .NET directly to machine code, since the bytecode here is designed to be programmed and disassembled easily, unlike the bytecode used in x86 processors which is designed to work faster. What's stopping Intel (for example) from partnering with Microsoft and making such a .NET-optimised processor?

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• Non-dynamic CMS [closed]

  Some of the web sites I visit every day (news, sports, etc..), although the content changes very often (several times per day), the URLs always have .html extension, what makes me thing that the content has been generated once, and then published as a static page, rather than generated in every call, or even cached in memory. For example, the fictitious site "mysports.com" have a "futbol.html" page, and then yesterday Messi gets injured and they have another thing to put in that page, then I presume they post the new item in their CMS system, and automatically a publishing action is triggered aftewards that recreates "futbol.html" in a CDN with the new item and probably discard the oldest one. Then the ETag changes and clients will get the new page if they try to access it. (the site is fictitious but this is what I believe happened yesterday in the sports site I read) This would fit in the CQRS approach, and I presume they have a huge performance. I know lots of CMS (WP, Drupal, BlogEngine.net, DNN, etc...), but I have never seen any able of doing this, or at least, I was not aware this feautre. How are called those distributed CMS? Which are the most well known? Cheers.

  i just upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.10 and i noticed that i get this message The location is not a folder whenever i try to access a mounted media (USB or even my other partitions). I am now unable to view content on my usb pendrive or other partitions. already tried sudo apt-get remove exo-utils with no luck because it says it is not installed. Can anyone help me?   I currently manage a website design and development company that integrates itself with print work too. I've been co manager for a couple of months now, however business is slow at the moment. I got an email today from a potential client asking if we do iPhone app development. Obviously we do not. But, seeing as there aren't many other project on the go at the moment, why not give it a go? Searching Google was my first option. I did a bit of background scrubbing. Discovered that I need certain developer tools etc. This can be arranged easily enough. The reason I came to Stack Exchange is for answers to these questions. I am a competant programmer and have had experience in Java, PHP, JavaScript, C++ and C#. So how long would it take me to come to grips with Objective-C? Assuming an 8 hour working day. Not only the language but also the iPhone interface libraries (if any exist) and other native libraries? The potential client said the app will be a catalogue. So I'm assuming either the data will be pulled online or in some kind of local database. I know the requirements are vague but does anyone have any idea of how mug time this would take? To learn the language, design the architecture and code? 40 Hours? 80 Hours? My final question kind of depends on the first two. But obviously the potential client wants a quote. And I have got no idea how much an app costs. I did some research and found a huge range in differences. The majority of the cost would cone from the time to develops the app! So to summarise. How long would it take me to be comfortable coding Objective-C, taking into consideration my past knowledge? I'm assuming a day or two to fully understand but you really don't know. How long would it take me to develop an app? How much should I charge (approx) for the development of this app?

• Looking for job advice [closed]

  I am a software developer for a government agency in DC, and I have recently completed one year of employment. I am generally dissatisfied with my experiences here. I do not want to gripe too much, but I do not spend a lot of time doing actual development on projects. I am asked to do everything under the sun: write requirements, review specs, test, attend random meetings, but actual coding makes up a small fraction of my time. The coding itself is fairly straightforward and simple so it feels like I am not growing from my experiences. I am not tasked with more challenging work, and I find the experiences are not rewarding. If I had a stronger resume/more work experience, I'd leave the position immediately but combined with the present economy, I am hesitant to leave. I have several questions: Does anybody have experiences like this? How did you make the most of it? I am currently doing some side projects, making simple webpages for people, but aside from that, and open source projects, what other things are out there? What are general benchmarks for a developer after one year of professional experience? What should I be expected to know/do? I am outsider (coming from a math/science background) so I do not know what exactly I should know/do. Is it possible to obtain a mentorship with a mid/senior developer to learn? If so, how can I go about making contacts in the DC area?
