• Mercurial: Class library that will exist for both .NET 3.5 and 4.0?

  I have a rather big class library written in .NET 3.5 that I'd like to upgrade to make available for .NET 4.0 as well. In that process, I will rip out a lot of old junk, and rewrite some code to better take advantage of the new classes and support in .NET 4.0 (like TPL.) The class libraries will thus diverge, but still be similar enough that some bug-fixes can be done to both in the same manner. How should I best organize this class library in Mercurial? I'm using Kiln (fogbugz) if that matters. I'm thinking: Named branches in one repository, can then transplant any bugfixes from one to the other Unnamed branches in one repository, can also transplant, but I think this will look messy Separate repositories, will have to reimplement the bugfixes (or use a non-mercurial-integraded compare tool to help me) What would you do? (any other alternatives that I haven't though of is welcome as well.) Note that the class libraries will diverge pretty heavily in areas, I have some remnants of old collection-type code that does something similar to Linq that I will remove, and some code that uses it that I will rewrite to use the Linq-methods instead. As such, just copying the project files and using #if NET40..#endif sections is not going to work out. Also, the 3.5 version of the class library will not be getting many new features, mostly just critical bug-fixes, so keeping both versions equally "alive" isn't really necessary. Thus, separate copies of all the files are good enough.

• Best practices for "search data class" in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi everybody, I'm hoping this isn't too subjective, but I'm new to ASP.NET MVC and I'm trying to figure out how others may have solved similar problems. Basically, I have two entities, Customers and Orders. A customer has many orders; an order belongs to exactly one customer. I'm making an Order Search feature that should allow a user to search for orders based on order or customer information. Pretty straightforward, I think. I've read in other posts that the search controller should use GET, but I think it makes more sense to use POST because of the large number of search params. I'm using Entity Framework to create my models, and that's in a separate class library project and namespace. This article talks about using binding instead of Request.Form to get at the POST data. Would it make decent sense to make a class to hold all the search data that could be materialized by the magic model binding? Otherwise I'd just be poking through the FormCollection to pull out particular values, which might be fine. Where would you recommend making such a class?

• How to get a UIAlertView's result??

  Hi, I implemented the gamekit. All works fine now. But if the user presses on send the data will instantly send to the other iphone/ipod/ipad and it will instantly written. So now i wanted to implemenr a confirm screen for the receiver. In my receiveData method (from the gamekit) i have an array. • Image does not update when file name remains the same in XCode 3.1.2

  Hi Everyone, I'm using XCode version 3.1.2 and am developing for iPhone using the Simulator with iOS 2.2.1 on Leopard. I had an image file named "img.jpg" in my project which I decided to switch for a different file. After adding the new file into the XCode Resources folder, I removed the first file and renamed the new file to the same name as the previous one, "img.jpg." When I run my program, however, the Simulator loads the old image instead of the new one, even though the old one has been deleted from disk (not just the reference). I tried changing the name of the file to "img2.jpg," and it worked like it should - loading the new image, but I want to keep the name "img.jpg." I ran a search with Spotlight for "img.jpg" to see if there was another copy stored somewhere that XCode was using, but it only returned my new image file. I have tried uninstalling the app from the Simulator and running the application again, but that also does not fix the problem. What must I do for XCode to recognize that I want to use the new image file and not the old one? Thanks for your help!!

  I have an invoice form where I'm giving the user opportunity to apply coupons to the invoice total. These coupons are held in another Model and I am going to do a lookup on the Coupon code (something like "20OFFONFRIDAY") which I will use to find what the restrictions and benefits of the coupon. (and to see if it even exists at all) The invoice does not have "coupon_code" on it so I hand forged the field onto my form with html: <% if (@invoice.status == 'new') %> <input id="coupon_code" name="coupon_code" type="text"/> <% end %> and I am calling a controller method with link_to and would like something like the following jquery enhanced link_to to work: <%= link_to "Apply Coupon", { :controller=>"invoices", :id=>@invoice.id, :coupon_code=>$('.coupon_code').val(), :action=>"apply_coupon_code" }, :method=>"post" %> ^formatted for easier reading Then inside my "apply_coupon_code" method I will go off to a couple other models and perform business logic before returning the updated invoice page. ...but maybe it's a pipe dream. I guess if push came to shove I could add the "coupon_code" field to my invoice model (even though it's persisted elsewhere.) so it's part of the entity and thus easily available on my form to send back into a controller, but I just hate adding a column to make a coupon validation easier. I figured I'd ping stackoverflow before taking that path.

While the compiler can figure out same casing // it makes it hard to read private Class2 Class2; // we camel case the parameter public Class1(Class2 class2){ this.Class2 = class2; } } Here are my stock rules The class name is capitalized (Class1) The public properties are capitalized (Prop1) The private field tied to a public property has m_ to indicate this. My coworker prefers _ There is some debate if using m_ or _ should be used at all, as it is like Hungarian notation. Private class fields are capitalized. The part I am trying to figure out is what do I do if when the Class name of a private field matches the private field name. For example, private Class2 Class2; This is confusing. If the private field name is not the same class, for example private string Name; , there isn't much issue. Or am I thinking about the issue wrong. Should my classes and private fields be named in such a way that they don't collide?

• How do I select column(s) by their "numeric" position in a table?

  I am trying to select columns by their "x" position in the table. DBI my $example = $hookup->prepare(qq{SELECT This,That,Condition,"I also want COLUMN-10" FROM tbl LIMIT ? ?}); ###column_number=10 ordinal_position?? $example->execute('2','10') or die "Did not execute"; Is this possible or do I need to run another single select to just that column? One problem I encountered was with a col named "Condition". For some reason, when I tried to select Condition the execute would die. I never attempted but, What if the column name was SELECT? Another note is the table is 75 cols wide and I only need 50 of them. The Col names are pretty verbose so, I would like to just call them by their "position". This would also allow the col names to be changed in the future without having to change the select statement. I am quite the newbie so please explain any answers down to my level.   I'm trying to pass a form field of type "file" to a CFFUNCTION. The argument type is "any". Here is the syntax I am trying to use (pseudocode): <cfloop from="1" to="5" index="i"> <cfset fieldname = "attachment" & i /> <cfinvoke component="myComponent" method="attachFile"> <cfinvokeargument name="attachment" value="#FORM[fieldname]#" /> </cfinvoke> </cfloop> The loop is being done because there are five form fields named "attachment1", "attachment2", et al. This throws an exception in the function: coldfusion.tagext.io.FileTag$FormFileNotFoundException: The form field C:\ColdFusion8\...\neotmp25080.tmp did not contain a file. However, this syntax DOES work: <cfloop from="1" to="5" index="i"> <cfinvoke component="myComponent" method="attachFile"> <cfinvokeargument name="attachment" value="FORM.attachment#i#" /> </cfinvoke> </cfloop> I don't like writing code like that in the second example. It just seems like bad practice to me. So, can anyone tell me how to use structure syntax to properly pass a file type form field to a CFFUNCTION??

• MySQL COUNT() total posts within a specific criteria?

  Hey, I've been losing my hair trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, let me explain abit about my MySQL structure (so you get a better understanding) before I go straight to the question. I have a simple PHP forum and I have a column in both tables (for posts and topics) named 'deleted' if it equals 0 that means its displayed (considered not deleted/exists) or if it equals 1 it hidden (considered deleted/doesn't exist) - bool/lean. Now, the 'specific criteria' I'm on about...I'm wanting to get a total post count within a specific forum using its id (forum_id), ensuring it only counts posts which are not deleted (deleted = 0) and their parent topics are not deleted either (deleted = 0). The column/table names are self explanatory (see my efforts below for them - if needed). I've tried the following (using a 'simple' JOIN): SELECT COUNT(t1.post_id) FROM forum_posts AS t1, forum_topics AS t2 WHERE t1.forum_id = '{$forum_id}' AND t1.deleted = 0 AND t1.topic_id = t2.topic_id AND t2.deleted = 0 LIMIT 1 I've also tried this (using a Subquery): SELECT COUNT(t1.post_id) FROM forum_posts AS t1 WHERE t1.forum_id = '{$forum_id}' AND t1.deleted = 0 AND (SELECT deleted FROM forum_topics WHERE topic_id = t1.topic_id) = 0 LIMIT 1 But both don't comply with the specific criteria. How would you store this variable, with GameCenter and NSDictionary or GameCenter and something else? More details are below if you don't understand. To clarify: bronze has the last 2 numbers, silver has the next 2 numbers, and so on. I understand I could use 4 ints or an array, but i would rather try to use this method, unless theres a much more efficient way. Example: When money = 1000;bronzeText = nothing, silverText = 10,goldText = nothing, diamondText = nothing; What other ways would you do this that you think would be more efficient? I will be calling a function (void)collisionDetector that detects if my player.frame crosses with a flyingObject.frame, and if that object is a coin it gives an added value to money and then calls (void)updateMoney. Im just using the timer to test this and spawn these flying objects.

• Database (and ORM) choice for an small-medium size .NET Application

  I have a requirement to develop a .NET-based application whose data requirements are likely to exceed the 4 gig limit of SQL 2005 Express Edition. There may be other customers of the same application (in the future) with a requirement to use a specific DB platform (such as Oracle or SQL Server) due to in-house DBA expertise. Questions What RDBMS would you guys recommend? From the looks of it the major choices are PostGreSQL, MySQL or FireBird. I've only got experience of MYSQL from these. Which ORM tool (if any) would you recommend using - ideally one that can be swapped out between DB platforms with minimal effort? I like the look of the entity framework but unsure as to the degree to which platforms other than SQL Server are supported. If it helps, we'll be using the 3.5 version of the Framework. I'm open to the idea of using a tool such as NHibernate. On the other hand, if it's going to be easier, I'm happy to write my own stored procedures / DAL code - there won't be that many tables (perhaps 30-35).

  Hi folks, I've got a winform app in visual studio 2010. My app does the following Get a list of files which I need to read the data then insert into a database. For each file, read data and insert into DB. Firstly, i'm not sure if I should be using IoC in this case. I believe I should be because then i don't need to tightly couple this winform to a repository. Secondly, I've tried using a Singleton repo, which I don't want and can confirm that it kills that code (crashes with an exception). Some other notes (which shouldn't impact this question) - Using Entity Framework for ASP.NET 4. - Using StructureMap for IoC Can someone help, please?

• How do I simplify my code?

  I just finished creating my first major application in C#/Silverlight. In the end the total line count came out to over 12,000 lines of code. Considering this was a rewrite of a php/javascript application I created 2 years that was over 28,000 lines I am actually quite proud of my accomplishment. After reading many questions and answers here on stackoverflow and other sites online, I followed many posters advice: I created classes, procedures, and such for things that I would have a year ago copied and pasted; I created logic charts to figure out complex functions; making sure there are no crazy hidden characters (used tabs instead of spaces); and a few others things; place comments where necessary (I have lots of comments). My application consists of 4 tiles laid out horizontally that have user controls loaded into each slice. You can have between one and four slices loaded at anytime. If you have once slice loaded, the slice takes up the entire artboard...if you have 2 loaded, each take up half, 3 a third, 4 a quarter. Each one of these slices represent (for the sake of this example) a light control. Each slice has 3 slider controls in it. Now when I coded the functionality of the sliders, I used a switch/case statement inside of a public function that would run the command on the specified slice/slider. The made for some duplicate code but I saw no way around it as each slice was named differently. So I would do slice1.my.commands(); slice2.my.commands(); etc. My question to you is how do I clean up my code even futher? (Sadly I cannot post any of my code). Is there any way to take this repetion out of my code?

• Optimize Duplicate Detection

  Background This is an optimization problem. Oracle Forms XML files have elements such as: <Trigger TriggerName="name" TriggerText="SELECT * FROM DUAL" ... /> Where the TriggerText is arbitrary SQL code. Each SQL statement has been extracted into uniquely named files such as: sql/module=DIAL_ACCESS+trigger=KEY-LISTVAL+filename=d_access.fmb.sql sql/module=REP_PAT_SEEN+trigger=KEY-LISTVAL+filename=rep_pat_seen.fmb.sql I wrote a script to generate a list of exact duplicates using a brute force approach. Problem There are 37,497 files to compare against each other; it takes 8 minutes to compare one file against all the others. Logically, if A = B and A = C, then there is no need to check if B = C. So the problem is: how do you eliminate the redundant comparisons? The script will complete in approximately 208 days. • MTD Expression on a single column - SSRS

  I need a bit of help here. I have been unable to create an 'Month To Date' expression to a single column on SSRS. I tested the following expression from a similar question in the forum, but it gives me a squiggly line below the variable 'd' =IIF(Fields!CreateDate.Value >= DateAdd(d,-7,Today()), Sum(Fields!Sales.Value), 0) If I run it, of course I got an error telling me that 'd' is not declared. ;) I changed it to ... DateAdd("d",-7,Today()), Sum(Fields!Sales.Value) ... following the example and the squiggly goes below the brackets of "today()" and needless to say it...but still not working. I tried a Dateadd(mm..Datediff ... and still nothing. My report has the following columns: Country | CustomerName | Sales | InvNotProcessed | Open Order | Orders | TotalbyCust What I need is to show the new MTD sales only in the column named "Sales" while the other three shows the rest of the query, which should be open as some orders may take quite a while to manufacture and invoice. the last column sums the totals of all other columns. • how to change uibutton title at runtime in objective c?

  Hello, I know this question is asked many a times,and i am also implementing the same funda for chanding the title of the uibutton i guess. Let me clarify my problem first. I have one uibutton named btnType, on clicking of what one picker pops up and after selecting one value,i am hitting done button to hide the picker and at the same time i am changing the the title of the uibutton with code [btnType setTitle:btnTitle forState:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; [btnType setTitleColor:[UIColor redColor] forState:UIControlEventAllEvents]; But with my surpriaze,it is not changed and application crashes with signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS. I am not getting where i am making mistake.I have allocated memory to the btnType at viewdidLoad. Also I am using -(IBAction)pressAddType { toolBar.hidden = FALSE; dateTypePicker.hidden = FALSE; } event on pressing the button to open the picker. Also i would like to mention that i have made connection with IB with event TouchUpInside for pressAddType. Any guesses? I will be grateful if you could help me. Thanks.

• Strange bug with PHP on Windows 7

  This is the configuration: Windows 7 Home Premium, XAMPP 1.7.3 (Apache 2.2.14 , PHP 5.3.1), Firefox 3.6 This is the PHP-code in a file named 'test.php' in htdocs: <?php echo('04556-8978765'); ?> On http://localhost/test.php I would expect to see the string 04556-8978765 in the browser. This is not what happens, though. The string appears for a short time and then it disappears altogether. Firebug shows an empty body-tag. However, when I look at page source, the string is there alright. When I change the string in the echo-statement to e.g. 4556-8978765, everything is fine. Internet Explorer 8 does not show this strange behavior. I could not reproduce this with the same Apache/PHP/Firefox configuration on Windows XP. '04556-8978765' is by no means unique. The couple '02065-96047' and '02065-9604' behave exactly the same. Can anybody reproduce this and offer an explanation as to what is going on? PS: If you can not see the string '04556-8978765' in the echo-statement above, look at this post with IE8.

• Attribute value nil

  Can someone tell me why is this happening? I have created a social networking website using Ruby on Rails. This is my first time programming with RoR. I have a model named "Friendship" which contains an attribute "blocked" to indicate whether the user has blocked another user. When I run the following in IRB - friendship = u.friendships.where(:friend_id => 22).first IRB gives me - Friendship Load (0.6ms) SELECT `friendships`.* FROM `friendships` WHERE `friendships`.`user_id` = 17 AND `friendships`.`friend_id` = 22 LIMIT 1 => #<Friendship id: 33, user_id: 17, friend_id: 22, created_at: "2012-04-07 10:29:49", updated_at: "2012-04-07 10:29:49", blocked: 1> As u can see, the "blocked" attribute has value '1'. But when I run the following 1.9.2-p290 :030 > friendship.blocked => nil - it says, the value of blocked is 'nil' and not '1'. Why is this happening? This could be a very silly mistake but I am new to RoR, so kindly help me! I initially didn't include the accessor method for 'blocked'.. I tried that, and still its giving the same result.. • Problem in homemade function to merge objects

  I'm trying to make a function that merges arrays. The reason is, I have a function that supposed to get the settings of an entity, and merge them with the global defaults. //So for example, let's say globalOptions is something like this var globalOptions={opt1:'foo',opt2:'something'}; //and this is entityOptions var entityOptions={opt1:'foofoo',opt2:null}; The only difference is it has objects in objects and objects in objects in objects, so what I made was a function that loops through all objects, thinking I would later, easily be able to loop through it all. Please ignore the array thing.
