  A few links you may be interested in. This week was a big week for Microsoft with the unveiling of the developer story for Windows 8 Metro-style apps. The recorded sessions are available on channel9. Note that you can use C++ AMP in both Metro and desktop apps, and in fact even on Windows 7. Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview is now available. To download it, here is a link to a link plus context. As I previously shared, I was also speaking at BUILD on C++ AMP, and here is a direct link to that recording. Kate Gregory has started a book on C++ AMP and she has graciously shared the first 1-2 draft chapters for free online – get the link from her blog post which is also where you can leave her feedback.   Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

• WordPress is now nicely supported on SQL Server (and SQL Azure for that matter)

  WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. When I say bend, check out the following which are all WordPress sites My “back up blog” http://iupdateable.wordpress.com/  My groups “odd site” :) http://ubelly.com My favourite “cheap games” site http://www.frugalgaming.co.uk/  WordPress users typically run their sites on Linux and MySQL, although PHP (the language in which WordPress is written) can be happily run on Windows. Both fine technologies in their own right, but for me (and probably a fair few others) I would love to use WordPress but with the technologies I know best (aka Windows, IIS and SQL Server). However, that has proven to be actually rather tricky in practice to get working – until now. Earlier last month OmniTI released a patch for WordPress which provides SQL Server and SQL Azure support.  In parallel with that some fine folks inside Microsoft have also created http://wordpress.visitmix.com which contains information about running WordPress on the Microsoft platform with a particular focus on SQL Server and SQL Azure.  Top stuff! • Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. I was aware of BidNow but had not found the time to take a look at it nor seems it running before. Adrian convinced me it was worth some a further look. In brief I like it :-) It is more than Hello World, but still easy enough to follow. Bid Now is an online auction site designed to demonstrate how you can build highly scalable consumer applications using Windows Azure. It is built using Visual Studio 2008, Windows Azure and uses Windows Azure Storage. Auctions are processed using Windows Azure Queues and Worker Roles. Authentication is provided via Live Id. • Installing Windows Mobile SDK without Visual Studio

  Is it possible to install the Windows Mobile SDK without having Visual Studio? I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? Is there a reason I need to pay for Microsoft's IDE, or is this just a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? Thanks,

  i have gotten the error in the microsoft KB article 975778 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us) i was able to get onto my computer luckily, but when i went on to get the hotfix that is stated in the article, it gave me this error when i ran it: "the update is not applicable to your computer." is there any way of getting the disk check error to stop, or to get this fix to work. i will answer any questions on hardware if you post the questions in the comments. answers to questions this is the a full version that i got from ASUS as an upgrade disk from windows vista (hopefully more specific than you were asking)

• SQL 2005 wont fully uninstall

  Hi all, I am trying to uninstall my default instance of SQL Server 2005 from my Windows 7 machine but having a few problems. Everything uninstalls as it should using Add/Remove programs but for some reason I am still left with the ‘SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)’ service installed and have no way of getting rid of it. I have tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 and uninstall, followed the following Microsoft kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 which uses the ARPWrapper.exe /Remove switch, but still the service exists. I want to get rid of every service so I can start with a clean install of named instances of SQL2005 and SQL2008. Any help would be appreciated. Cragly

• Providing a public Web-Hosting service on MS Windows - advice and resources

  Are there any resources offering advice on how to setup a microsoft based web-hosting service? I currently offer LAMP hosting with cPanel, but there is some demand for IIS & SQL Server. As far as I can tell MS Windows Web Server 2008 R2 edition allows unlimited IIS connections. And a per-processor license for MS SQL Server Web Edition 2008 also permits unlimited connections. Where I am falling down is that I can't figure out how to get "unlimited" Active Directory users. I can't use 2008R2 Web Server edition for AD, so I will need the 2008R2 standard edition, I think. Does Microsoft have a provision for using AD in an ISP scenario? I am looking at using the cPanel Enkompas system to manage the Windows software, and Enkompas requires AD for user authentication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  ASP.NET session state lets you associate a server-side string or object dictionary containing state data with a particular HTTP client session. A session is defined as a series of requests issued by the same client within a certain period of time, and is managed by associating a session ID with each unique client. • Can't run telnet in console opened by Autohotkey

  I have enabled the telnet client on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and if I open the start menu and launch cmd from there I can run telnet. I normally use the keyboard shortcut Win-C, implemented by this AutoHotkey snippet to open a console. #c::Run, C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe For some strange reason when I try to run telnet in a console window opened this way I get Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Steve\Documentstelnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Running path in any console, regardless of how it was opened produces the same output. Can anyone shed any light on why telnet might run in one console but not the other?

• Exporting PowerPoint Slides with Specific Heights and Widths

  I found myself in need of exporting PowerPoint slides from a presentation and was fairly excited when I found that you could save them off in standard image formats. • Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

  We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them. • .NET development on Macs

  I posted the “exciting” conclusion of my laptop trade-ins and issues on my personal blog. The links, in chronological order, are posted below. While those posts have all of the details about performance and software used, I wanted to comment on why I like using Macs in the first place. It started in 2006 when Apple released the first Intel-based Mac. As someone with a professional video past, I had been using Macs on and off since college (1995 graduate), so I was never terribly religious about any particular platform. I’m still not, but until recently, it was staggering how crappy PC’s were. They were all plastic, disposable, commodity crap. I could never justify buying a PowerBook because I was a Microsoft stack guy. When Apple went Intel, they removed that barrier. They also didn’t screw around with selling to the low end (though the plastic MacBooks bordered on that), so even the base machines were pretty well equipped. Every Mac I’ve had, I’ve used for three years. Other than that first one, I’ve also sold each one, for quite a bit of money. Things have changed quite a bit, mostly within the last year. I’m actually relieved, because Apple needs competition at the high end. Other manufacturers are finally understanding the importance of industrial design. For me, I’ll stick with Macs for now, because I’m invested in OS X apps like Aperture and the Mac versions of Adobe products. As a Microsoft developer, it doesn’t even matter though… with Parallels, I Cmd-Tab and I’m in Windows. So after three and a half years with a wonderful 17” MBP and upgraded SSD, it was time to get something lighter and smaller (traveling light is critical with a toddler), and I eventually ended up with a 13” MacBook Air, with the i7 and 8 gig upgrades, and I love it. At home I “dock” it to a Thunderbolt Display. Adding those events to your Live Calendar is easy to do with the Add Events to Windows Live Calendar accelerator. I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? • Is there anyway to configure Google account for Windows 8 Sync?

  Recently upgraded to Windows 8. The problem is a lot of Sync features requires Microsoft account to linked. Even though I have one, I don't want to spare one for Sync purpose. Additionally, Google-Chrome's sync feature is absolutely charming. So I prefer Google for storing my data. So, 1) Is there anyway to replace Microsoft Sync with other accounts by patching or modifying any byte? 2) I want to replace Maps, Weather, and all possible apps with Google. I've see Mail can be done. What are the all other possible Metro apps?

  I set up a Microsoft Exchange account on my iOS device to sync my Gmail contacts. But Microsoft Exchange is ignoring phone numbers that are labeled as 'iPhone' or 'main'. For example, John Smith: On Mac and Gmail: John Smith main: 123-334-1212 home: 123-330-1002 work: 123-330-8211 iPhone: 123-778-5556 On iOS device (via Exchange sync): John Smith home: 123-330-1002 work: 123-330-8211 I'd like to sync my contacts from my Mac to iCloud and Gmail, but you can't do both: Is there a solution to sync iOS and Gmail contacts without using Exchange?
