  Endlich!Die letzten Projekte sind erledigt, die Geschenke verpackt und auch in den Sphären des Web 2.0 soll nun etwas Ruhe und Weihnachtsstimmung einkehren. Ich möchte daher gar nicht viele Worte verlieren: Es liegt ein arbeitsreiches Jahr hinter uns und es galt viele Herausforderungen zu meistern. Vor allem in der eigentlich geruhsamen Adventszeit wird es viel zu hektisch. Aber gerade dann ist es umso wichtiger, kurz innezuhalten. • Simple solution now to a problem from 8 years ago. Use SQL windowing function

We had to find the top 5 donor per month and send out some awards. The SQL we came up with was clunky and had lots of limitation (can only do one year at a time), then switch the where clause and go again. Fast forward 8 years, I got a similar problem where we had to find the top 3 combination of 2 fields for every single day. And the solution is this elegant: SELECT CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) AS "RecordDate" , status_cd , nbr , COUNT(*) AS occurance , ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) ORDER BY COUNT(*) DESC) RowNum FROM table1 WHERE RowNum < 4 GROUP BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) , status_cd , nbr If only I had this 8 years ago. :) Life is good now!

  We have just released an official certification exam for Oracle ADF Development.  This exam is aimed that those who are already getting hands-on with ADF and would like an official certification of their development skills. I was involved in writing some of the exam questions and this was an interesting experience.  We were looking to test not only a knowledge of the framework, but also a practical application of that knowledge.  Trying to do that in a clear question which related to multiple choice questions was sometimes difficult but I think we’ve produced a testing exam which, if you pass, shows a strong practical knowledge of ADF.   Every time I install VS (whichever version going back years) it installs with the Solution Explorer on the right. Now as most UIs have the navigation in a left hand column (and at the top of the viewport) and the content to the right of this navigation this always seems wrong to me. So I drag the solution explorer to the left of the screen and dock it there. But I've never seen another developer do this. Considering how most programmers usually like to customize their environment, adding their favourite text editor, browser, plug-ins, greasemonkey scripts etc why do Visual Studio developers never seem to make this simple UI change? Does anyone else do this or am I just screaming in the dark?
