  • java multiple operations depending on the type of the object passed

    assuming i create a method which is passed an object, and that method would perform an action depending on the object passed. how should i identify the object? i thought of using the class name to identify the object, but may be impractical since i could easily change the class name of objects, and generate headaches during future development. am i right?

    I have a list of longitude and longitude points in an xml file that is used throughout my application. I find my self repeating this code to get points often and think there must be a better way? String[] mTempArray = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.stations); int len = mTempArray.length; mStationArray = new ArrayList<Station>(); for(int i = 0; i < len; i++){ Station s = new Station(); String[] fields = mTempArray[i].split("[\t ]"); s.setValuesFromArray(fields); Log.i("ADD STATION", ""+s); mStationArray.add(s); } XML is in the format of: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <resources> <array name="stations"> <item> <name>Station name</name> <longitude>1111111</longitude> <latitude>11111</latitude> <code>1</code> </item> And another (possible) problem is that to get just one station I have to get all of them and pull the one I want from the array. Is this going to be considerably slower? Can I make this array consistent throughout the app? (But keeping the separate Intent methodology)

    How do I install signal handling logic iff sun.misc.Signal is available? Background First generation of my code looked something like this: class MyApp { public static void main(String[] args) { ... Signal.handle(term_sig, new SignalHandler() { public void handle(Signal sig) { ... } }); ... } } I believe I understand how to reflectively test for and use signal handlers -- Class.forName("sun.misc.Signal"), reflectively call Signal.handle, and so forth. My impulse was simply to instantiate another anonymous inner class with the dynamically obtained SignalHandler class, but I think that's just wishful syntax.

  • When can Java produce a NaN (with specific code question)

    I'm a bit perplexed by some code I'm currently writing. I am trying to preform a specific gradient descent (main loop included below) and depending on the initial conditions I will alternatively get good looking results (perhaps 20% of the time) or everything becomes NaN (the other 80% of the time). However it seems to me that none of the operations in my code could produce NaN's when given honest numbers! Does anyone see anything that could create these NaN's?

    This must be a fairly common occurrence where I have a map and wish to thread-safely expose its key set: public MyClass { Map<String,String> map = // ... public final Set<String> keys() { // returns key set } } Now, if my "map" is not thread-safe, this is not safe: public final Set<String> keys() { return map.keySet(); } And neither is: public final Set<String> keys() { return Collections.unmodifiableSet(map.keySet()); } So I need to create a copy, such as: public final Set<String> keys() { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } However, this doesn't seem safe either because that constructor traverses the elements of the parameter and add()s them. So while this copying is going on, a ConcurrentModificationException can happen. So then: public final Set<String> keys() { synchronized(map) { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } } seems like the solution. Does this look right?

    I am looking at this piece of code. This constructor delegates to the native method "System.arraycopy" Is it Thread safe?     I want to read an input string and return it as a UTF8 encoded string. SO I found an example on the Oracle/Sun website that used FileInputStream. I didn't want to read a file, but a string, so I changed it to StringBufferInputStream and used the code below. The method parameter jtext, is some Japanese text. Actually this method works great. The question is about the deprecated code. I had to put @SuppressWarnings because StringBufferInputStream is deprecated. I want to know is there a better way to get a string input stream? Is it ok just to leave it as is?     Ok this is an extension of a question I asked about earlier yet this is the next step that is unclear to me. Everything else will be ready and this part is driving me mad! some members provided great help and I already made progress with that info, but this is just another obstacle. I am creating a booking object (as was suggested) that will have a start date and end date. each booking will also have a number of seats associated with it (that I require to reserve). The total available number of seats any given day 46 (as the total capacity of the hall is 46 seats). so in assumption that I have a booking to be made in the system, and start date is 1st jan and end date is 10th jan. The question is how can I check the remaining seats in all those days between the range to see if requested number could be hosted or not? and then when the second booking is made, it will have to see that the days in this range already have less than 46 and decrement further if possible to host the reservation. one of the members, and I appreciate his effort, gladly contributed a method to compare if this booking is after or before the existing bookings.
