• ADSL2+ - High sync-rate, good line attenuation, but low noise margin and slow speeds

  I've been with my ISP (IdNet) for a few months and have been getting some good speeds, but in the last week the speed has dramatically decreased (from 15 Mbps+ to around 0.2 Mbps). This happens at all times of day, not just peak periods. Obviously I've done all I can to isolate problems my end - only one PC is connected to the router (via ethernet cable) and no other background programs are using the network etc. I've raised the issue with the ISP and they've suggested trying a new ADSL filter to see if that is casuing the problem, but I thought it would also be good to get the opinion of superuser on possible causes or other troubleshooting I can do. Here are the juicy stats :) My router (Netgear DGN1000) reports: Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 17602 kbps 1062 kbps Line Attenuation 17.9 db 8.6 db Noise Margin 6.0 db 6.1 db I used RouterStats and it seems to show those figures stay fairly consistent all the time I ran the BT speedtest and it reported: download speed of 164 kbps, out of a max achievable of 21000 kbps upload speed of 859 kbps, out of 1048 kbps DSL connection rate 17719 kbps down and 1048 kbps up IP Profile of 15000 kbps Is there any more troubleshooting I can do? Does this look like a problem with my equipment / wiring or with BT's line? Any advice would be great :)

• Cannot access a web page? [closed]

  Hello all, Recently, I could not access the webpage bbc.co.uk anymore, while I can access other websites smoothly. Ar first, I though there may be some problem with my laptop. However, if I use my laptop through my company network, I can load the page bbc.co.uk normally. Then, I though maybe my ADSL at home blocks that web address. However, I tried another laptop with my home ADSL and it can load the page bbc.co.uk very fast. Now I do not know what could be the problem. Can anyone tell me please? Thank you.

• Cisco 678 Will Not Work using PPPoE - Possibly Because I Configured it Incorrectly..?

  I am attempting to configure a Cisco 678 because I am totally sick on my Actiontec. However, I am running into some problems. It seems as though the Cisco is able to train the line, but I am unable to ping out. I am all right at programming, but still learning a lot when it comes to being a system administrator. I apologize in advance if I did something ridiculous, or am attempting to configure this device to do something it was not designed to do. It is almost like I am not correctly configuring the device to grab it's IP using PPPoA (like my Actiontec.) The output from "show running" (below) makes me think this too. • Website often sticks, but clicking the link again everything loads fine

  Hi I have a website, which normally is very fast, however in the last week or two we're run into a problem whereby randomly if you click a link the browser will just sit there with the throbber spinning but the page doesn't appear to load If you click the link again it then responds straight away This doesn't seem to be limited to Chrome, Firefox or IE as we've tried all with all having same problems The site is build in ASP and connects to a MySQL database and runs on a dedicated windows 2003 server The firewalls were changed in the data centre recently to pixies but I've not been able to reproduce the problem outside of the office Within the office, we have 11 people (only 7 today and still experiencing problems) connected to a 7MB ADSL connection with Eclipse I have made some changes to the network in the office, namely wiring 4 desks back to the main 24 port switch rather than to small 5 port which then linked on to the 24 port switch... however we were having problems before this was done, and I did this to try and rule out an issue with the switch We have a backup ADSL connection, so I may try switching to that, or switching to a different router, but do you think this is a likely issue? • Exchange 2007 Email Error 451 4.7.0 Timeout waiting for client input

  Our SBS 2008 server with Exchange 2007 started rejecting some (most) emails starting about 3 or 4 days ago. The return failure message looks something like this: The error that the other server returned was: 451 451 4.7.0 Timeout waiting for client input (state 18) I've rebooted our Sonicwall TZ-210 router and that doesn't make any difference. I think this problem has something to do with MTU (packet size) but I don't understand why the problem just started now. We haven't made any changes to our network infrastructure for weeks. If I ping our SonicWall (DSL connection, bridge mode) forcing unfragmented packets, I start getting packet dropouts at packet size 1320 or so. Maybe this is completely normal, I'm not sure. I haven't tried rebooting the DSL modem yet because I'm not on site. That's one of the next things I'll try.

Previously, I had Linksys WRT350N, and there was no problem, while I had Ethernet cable plugged in to one of LAN ports in Asmax and INTERNET(RJ45) port in Linksys, connection used PPPoE protocol -- worked OK. D-link has DSL(RJ11) port (which I don't want to use as Asmax replacement, while there is a separate Ethernet cable with a TV plugged to Asmax, which I don't want to configure from scratch on D-link). How should I connect my new D-link to work with Asmax? Via DSL port? Via one of the LAN ports (in which case I probably should change the purpose of this port in the config, I guess?). I tried connecting D-link both ways: LAN(ASMAX) to LAN(DLINK) LAN(ASMAX) to DSL(DLINK) (using RJ11 - RJ45 cable) I hope there is some setting in the DLINK's config that I overlooked. I haven't tried to see what's in ASMAX's config, but I guess I don't need to change anything there, while Linksys worked just fine? • Port forwarding for VNC on Dynalink RTA1335 not working

  I've vnc-java running on an Ubuntu box, with the IP address 192.168.1.68, using port 5800 (because port 5900 is being used for normal VNC). If I connect to 192.168.1.68:5800 using another computer on the network, I can use VNC fine. Using www.whatismyip.com, I find out what my IP address from the outside world is, and if I go directly to that, I get to access my modem/router. If I try to navigate to that IP address, with ':5800' on the end, I get a "This web page is not available." error. I have port forwarding set up in the router as follows: Application Name External Packet Internal Host IP Address Protocol Port IP Address Port VNC ALL TCP/UDP 5800 192.168.1.68 5800 What else do I need to do to get this to work?

• DD-WRT (WRT54G) and (THOMSON TG782) how to put them togather?

  Ok so let me explain, i bought WRT54G and successfully installed DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/26/08) mini-special - build 9994. That's all ok no problems with it all normal functioning. And just to add (i don't need wireless, wireless is turned off always) What i want: ISP's router (TG782) from it's INTERNET port(out) cable "which was before in my pc" is connected to WRT54G's INTERNET port and then from WRT54G LAN port 1 to my pc. The problem: How do i connect and setup all? I have tried many times on many different ways but cant get it to work IF THE CABLE FROM TG782 IS CONNECTED TO WRT54G ON INTERNET PORT. If i connect the TG782 to Lan port 1 on WRT54G and my pc to lan port 2 then all works fine after i setup gateway and all. But i want to connect TG782 to Internet port of WRT54G because i need "Access Restrictions" and this only goes through WAN right? please correct me if i am wrong. What i have tried: This is how i have tried to setup all. The TG782 router ip is 192.168.1.1 And WRT54G ip is 192.168.1.30 so in WRT54G control panel i have setup like this: ----WAN Connection Type---- Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP STP: Disabled ----Router IP---- Local IP Address: 192.168.1.30 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the TG782) ----Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)---- DHCP Type: DHCP Server Start IP Address: 192.168.1.100 Maximum DHCP Users: 6 And this wont work i probably miss something more, if anyone can help i would be thankfull. Also i have to note that i have tried to set my network adapter on pc to use the gateway of WRT54G and ip 192.168.1.102 In short: i cant get it to work normal only as a switch! • What is the point of PPPoE?

  I am trying to expand my knowledge of networking beyond the basics. I have started reading about PPP, and how it is used in DSL modems with PPPoE and PPPoA. My first impression of PPP was "well that seems pretty similar to Ethernet". They are both data link layer protocols. They both have fields to identify the encapsulated protocol (e.g. IP). They both have related protocols to assign IP addresses (DHCP and NCP). So my first question was "so what's the point of PPP, why not just use Ethernet?". The answer to that was fairly straightforward - Ethernet is not supported over a wide range of media like serial lines, and is a fairly specific technology to LAN's using CAT5 or similar. HOWEVER - then I was reading about PPPoE, and the obvious thought was "well if we are doing something over Ethernet, then Ethernet must be available and in use, so why not just use it?". In other words, PPPoE seems to be encapsulating one data-link layer protocol in another very similar protocol. Why do IP-inside-PPP-inside-Ethernet when we could just be doing IP-inside-Ethernet, and use DHCP rather than NCP to assign the IP address to the home router? Thanks

• My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

• Avoiding double NAT with PPPoA connection

  I've got an ASUS RT-N56U wending its way to me and have been thinking about how to set this up on my home network. I currently have a Netgear DG634g V5 and was hoping to use this device as a modem only, with everything else being done by the router. Problem is, my ISP uses PPPoA and the asus seems only to support PPPoE. I'm aware that a double NAT configuration should be avoided and I've seen some instructions here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/33700-17-ultimate-modem-router-setup-thread Specifically, I was going to follow the guidance in the section entitled "Chaining Two Networks Together In a Cascading Fashion (Modem handles PPPoA)". That seems like it could work. However, is this a double NAT configuration or even a good way to do it? Would UPnP still work? The other option, I understand, is to buy the Draytek Vigor 120 but I'd ideally like to avoid the cost of that if its not necessary.

• My wifi internet router connection resets when more devices connected

  The wifi internet router is connected directly to Internet cable. The main Pc is attached to it via LAN cable, while 1 laptop and 3 mobile phones connect to it via wifi. Whenever 2 or more devices connect via wifi, the internet connection breaks after one minute and internet connection resets. I tracked this behaviour for weeks, and came to conclusion: It seems like some 'device 1' got IP then it went to suspend mode. Then 'device 2' connected to router and got the same IP. Then the 'device 1' woke up from suspend mode and tried to use his old IP. The router sees that 2 same IP addresses exists and automatically reset internet connection. Is this possible? Have I tracked the problem correctly and how to solve it? The router is set to lease 100 IP addresses to devices who try to connect. The password is strong and no hacker's device is being connected to my wifi network. Tried changing password and AP's name.

  I have a Samsung 6 series LCD TV which can connect to internet by LAN. When I connect my TV to my Windows 7 laptop which get its internet from AS share it, it can connect to the Internet. • How to connect 2 routers (Asmax and D-link)

  I just bought a new router, D-link DSL 2641B and want to connect it to another one, provided by my ISP, Asmax AR 804MP. Previously, I had Linksys WRT350N, and there was no problem, while I had Ethernet cable plugged in to one of LAN ports in Asmax and INTERNET(RJ45) port in Linksys, connection used PPPoE protocol -- worked OK. D-link has DSL(RJ11) port (which I don't want to use as Asmax replacement, while there is a separate Ethernet cable with a TV plugged to Asmax, which I don't want to configure from scratch on D-link). How should I connect my new D-link to work with Asmax? Via DSL port? Via one of the LAN ports (in which case I probably should change the purpose of this port in the config, I guess?). I tried connecting D-link both ways: LAN(ASMAX) to LAN(DLINK) LAN(ASMAX) to DSL(DLINK) (using RJ11 - RJ45 cable) I hope there is some setting in the DLINK's config that I overlooked. I haven't tried to see what's in ASMAX's config, but I guess I don't need to change anything there, while Linksys worked just fine? The only difference I see, is that D-link has RJ11 DSL port as WAN, and Linksys has RJ45 (called by them INTERNET) as a main WAN port.

• I cannot stay logged in to a site with my router

  I have a D-Link home router and my isp is Time warner. When I try to login to any site it does not let me. The website does not keep me logged in when I navigate the pages. I have to keep loging in for every web page I see. When I connect my cable modem directly to my computer I am able to stay logged in. Any ideas here?
