• Home networking problem between power line communication and Ethernet

  My network runs through the electrical wiring of the house and is organised as such: Groundfloor: an ADSL+network switch, using DHCP (address : 172.19.3.1) (Mac) PCs connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (1 per PC) First Floor: 1 switch (8 ports) connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (address unknown) 2 Mac PCs connected (via RJ45 network wires) to that router using DHCP The Problem On the first floor, file tranfers between PCs are fast and perfect. But if I try to transfer files from or to a computer on the ground floor, the speed is slow and eventually the transfer dies out. The Question So I suspect the 1st floor switch is creating some kind of barrier (firewall?) preventing external PCs from accessing the PCs it is connected to? Am I right and if so, how could I disable that barrier?

• VPN for a small organization

  I am in charge of a small office network that has < 10 users. I want to be able to offer them access to the network from their home internet connections. At the moment we have a regular ADSL-router-firewall to provide local network access and a fixed IP address. I know there are enterprise-level VPN solutions, but these obviously won't be available to us because of the cost and complexity. What small-scale solutions are around that you could recommend, what would we need to deploy on the client side, and what would the clients need to do to access the VPN? Simplicity and low cost need to be the keys here. Thanks

• Are spurious TCP connections on port 53 a problem?

  I run a server which amongst other things uses tinydns for DNS and axfrdns for handling transfer requests from our secondary DNS (another system). I understand that tinydns uses port 53 on UDP and axfrdns uses port 53 on TCP. I've configured axfrdns to only allow connections from my agreed secondary host. I run logcheck to monitor my logs and every day I see spurious connections on port 53 (TCP) from seemingly random hosts. They usually turn out to be from ADSL connections. My question is; are these innocent requests or a security risk? I am happy to block repeat offenders using iptables but don't want to block innocent users of one of the websites I host.   I have a Linux router with 2 NICs doing masquerade from network 192.168.0.0/24 to an ADSL router. users <----> NIC A [router] NIC B <----> INTERNET Now I'm experimenting with proxy arp on the NIC A to intercept all the IP requests in the network. I have a pool of addresses in the 192.168.0.0/24 network for this users. How can I translate, saythe IP10.0.0.64to192.168.0.64` in order to grant it internet access? I have already tried SNAT - DNAT, even I have written a NFQUEUE app to spoof the IP address with no luck.

• Cisco 877 as a VPN server?

  I have a Cisco 877 router which connects my network to the Internet using an ADSL line, a single public IP address and NAT; the IOS version is 15. Everything is working ok, but I'd like to configure this router to be a VPN server, to be able to connect to the network from the outside. I've tried looking for documentation, but everything I can find is related to having the 877 act as a VPN client, or to site-to-site VPNs; I can't find anything about letting single remote computers access the internal network, which is something I can do quite easily using Windows' RRAS or ISA Server. Can the Cisco 877 act as a VPN server for remote client computers? (Looks like it should, but just to be sure...) Which type of VPNs does it support? Do they require some special software on the client machines, or can they be used by standard out-of-the-box Windows computers? And, finally: how to set up this?

  I have a Draytek Vigor 2820 router which is connected to our ADSL provider (British Telecom, BT). We currently have one static IP address which is accessible from anywhere outside of our network and points at a simple web server on port 80. We have just been given 5 more static IP addresses which I would like to point at five servers that have static IP's. As an example: Current static IP - 80.123.123.123 New Static IP's - 100.100.100.100-105 Server IP's - 192.168.1.129-133 I have confused myself completely between NAT addresses, static routes and WAN IP aliases. If anyone can give me a clear idea of what I need to do it would be greatly appreciated.

• RRAS server 2003 one nic vpn encrypted

  Hi All, I have a a machine installed with Server 2003 standard on it. It is behind a standard adsl router. I have setup RRAS access on it with under the custom setting and selected just vpn as the machine only has one nic installed. I can connect to the server and it all works fine. I'm just wondering where the settings are to say that it is data encrypted. I know in xp when setting up a vpn you can check the option to encrypt the data, but doing this in server 2003 there isn't the option so thought i would try and use rras. The main reason that i want to do this is that xp only allows one connection at a time. Dan

• Using airport extreme base station as a wireless G to wireless N bridge

  Due to unfortunate placement of various wall outlets in my new apartment, my adsl 2 modem + router is not able to be placed next to my airport extreme base station (AEBS). I'd prefer not to run cat5 cable between them, but I still want to use the wireless N on the AEBS, because it will have a high speed NAS plugged in via gigabit ethernet so I want to maximise the wireless transfer speed to my 27" iMac. Is it possible to use one of the radios in the airport extreme to bridge the wireless G network with the router, and the wireless N radio to broadcast normally? The only traffic going over the G network should be internet (24mbps ADSL2) so it should never get saturated. Thanks

• Is this a common/bug on this PPPoE setting for Cisco ASA 5505?

  We have to change the way the firewall setup due to we've changed the internet provider. The way we setup we have ADSL modem and we have to do a full bridge mode and the firewall configuration has to change from Static IP to Use PPPoE option on Outside interface with PPPoE username and password, CHAP authentication, WAN IP and WAN subnet mask. [See the attachment] It's been working ok with the use of PPPoE option however the issue is that if we un-plug the power cable of the firewall. This "Outside" interface turned to blank - NO WAN IP, PPPoE username and password. So basically, we have to retype this information again. Is this common or a bug? Any ideas? Thanks

• Can't access internet using a domain joined computer outside the domain environment

  We had an unused box at work so took it home. It had been joined to the domain and hasn't been unjoined. When I try to use it at home (logging in with a local admin account) I can't seem to access internet pages. It gets correct IP and gateway for the local network and correct DNS servers for the home ADSL connection. I can happily ping the home router (which doesn't have any tricky firewall settings). Can't seem to ping outside, get any DNS to resolve, or (obviously) get any web pages. Is there some problem here with this having been joined to the domain?

• Share laptop Wi-Fi with router set up as access point via ethernet cables

  I have an ADSL modem which serves as a wireless router. There's a laptop connected to it through cable. On the other room I have a laptop which is connected through the router wirelessly. Since I have other appliances that need to get connected but are not Wi-Fi capable I have another Wi-Fi router. How can I share the second laptop's Wi-Fi with the second router so that the router can then serve as an access point to give internet to my other appliances through ethernet cables? I want something like this: INTERNETMODEM (WIFI)LAPTOP 1 (WIFI)LAPTOP 2 (WIFI)Router 2 (ETHERNET)DREAMBOX & WDTV What I've tried so far is opened the admin interface of router 2 then set static IP 192.168.100.13 and disabled the DHCP. The DHCP of the main router starts with 192.168.100.1 then I hooked up router 2 with the laptop 2 through Cat5 cable but for some reason it's not working.

• Using a Netgear WGR614v9 to extend wireless signal from Netgear DG934GT

  I'm wondering if someone could please provide me the steps for extending/repeating my wirless signal so that I can have greater wireless range throughout my house. I have 2 wirless Netgear routers, a DG934GT ADSL router (base unit) and WGR614v9 cable router (repeater). I've flashed both routers with the latest firmware and have turned on the wireless repeating function in the WGR614v9 but I can't get internet access when connected to the repeater, I can only get it when connected to the base unit. Can this be achieved by running an ethernet cable between the two routers as thus far I've only tried to get them to contact each other wirelessly. Any help would be appreciated

• Windows 2008 RRAS and PPPoE

  I'm trying to use Windows Server 2008's Routing and Remote Access Server to share an ADSL connection which uses PPPoE, but I'm having no luck. I can setup the connection as a broadband Internet connection in Windows, and it works. I can share it using Internet Connection sharing, and it works (but it's not what I need). I have installed and enabled the Routing and Remote Access Service and configured it for NAT with a demand-dial interface; I create the aforementioned interface using PPPoE with the exact same parameters used on the Windows connection; I connected it, and it seems to work: I can also see it gets its public IP address and DNS assigned correctly. But it just doesn't work. The server has no Internet connectivity at all, and PINGing anything on the Internet results in a cryptic "general error". Any help?

• Snap Server 18000 connection help!

  I wonder if anyone here can help me. I have a home server setup made up of old secondhand computers, 2 servers running Windows Server 2003, 1 workstation running Windows 7, a 16 port switch & an adsl ethernet modem. All these connect and talk to each other fine but then I got a "Snap Server 18000" and a "Snap disk 30sa" sata array. When I turn the Snap on, it boots past the BIOS, runs a kernel, then displays: This device cannot be managed via the video/kbd/mouse interface. The video is now disabled. You may access the management functions from your web browser. Only, none of the other PCs detect it, so no browser can find it! I have checked all cables, and all LEDs indicate there's a connection. I have installed the windows "iscsi" and the adaptec "Snap Server Manager" on all PCs but still it's not detected. I don't know what else to do, please advise!

Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

• How to configure a wireless router to point to a remote www proxy

  I have a LG smart Tv with browser. I need the tv browser to connect to a uk based proxy server on port 808. Unfortunately there is no option within tv to setup proxy for its browser. Now the Tv connects via a wireless connection to the internet. IE: TV <- D-Link DIR-605L <- ADSL <- WWW. Is it possible to setup this wireless router to connect the TV to the Proxy ?? If so ? where ? and what setings do i need to change in the wireless router ?? In short my question is ? How do i get the wireless router to make up for the lack of proxy connectivity within my Tv browser ?? • Remote Desktop connection repeatedly aborting

  I connect to my workplace computer using Remote Desktop. After 1-2 minutes the application freezes to tell me after one more minute that the connection was aborted. It then reconnects. Everything works again for 1-2 minutes. Then the process repeats. Probably Forever. My coworkers do not experience such problems when connecting to the workplace. My workplace computer: Windows 7 32bit My home computer: Windows 7 64bit connected to the internet via WLAN-router with integrated ADSL modem (Linksys WAG200G) Things I already tried to fix the problem: disabled the Windows firewall disabled the other firewall reduced the MTU upgraded the firmware on the router configured port-forwarding to forward all packets to my home computer The problem remains unchanged. What could be the cause of the connection aborts? What else can I try to fix the connection? Thanks in advance.

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

• Cisco ASA - VPN and Hairpinning....

  Hi, We have 2 sites that will be linked by a IPSEC VPN between 2 Cisco ASAs: Site 1 8Mb ADSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Site 2 2Mb SDSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Basically, both sites need access to a service at the end of another IPSEC VPN, Site 3, which I plan to terminate at Site 2. This is due to the way the service is sold - it's billed per gateway. So if both Site 1 and Site 2 had their own VPN connection to Site 3, it would cost us twice as much... Anyway, my idea is to have all traffic from Site 1 destined for Site 3 to go via the VPN between Site 1 and Site 2. The end result being all traffic that hits Site 3 has come via Site 2. I understand this is known as hairpinning but I'm struggling to find a great deal of information on how this is setup. So, firstly, can anyone confirm that what I'm trying to achieve is possible and, secondly, can anyone point me in the direction of an example of such a configuration? Many Thanks.

• Configuration of Sonicwall Load Balancing

  We installed a Sonicwall NSA 240 appliance and have configured it up for our SSL VPN connection and for load balancing with 2 ADSL lines. Over the past week, I have been testing the load balancing options to optimize the connection speeds for our users - but I've run into the following: Round Robin load balancing is the ideal load balancing setting and it's roughly doubling our throughput- but, when it's active users are unable to access any SSL enabled websites such as banking, web-mail, etc. For this reason, I have been using percentage based balancing as it allows me to enable source and destination IP binding, which doesn't 'break' any secure connections but were left with the slow connection speeds we had before adding the second line. I'm looking for a method in which we can take advantage of the round robin connection speeds while allowing users to access sites with SSL certificates, all while still allowing our remote (vpn) users to connect.   I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems).
