• Network printing -- setting up and printing over network using Mac OS X

  I've connected a USB printer to a Mac OS X (10.4) machine -- this computer is connected to a network with a registered IP address -- and enabled sharing through the System Preferences setting (under "Shared" and "Print & Fax". Is this printer shared through the Bonjour or CUPS protocol (does it matter that I know)? How do I sent a print job to this computer (also from a 10.4 OS X machine)? It does not show up in the list of printers in the Default Network when I go to "add printer"; do I need to do anything else (on either machine)? Thanks much!

  Centos 6 recognises and configures a HP LaserJet P3015dn printer connected via USB. This machine is being configured as a small group file/print server. I can print a test page, which is processed/printed correctly. The next time printing is attempted (say printing a second test page), the page is not printed and the printer is set to disabled. • Using WebDAV for automated downloads

  I currently manage a number of sites (at one point about a dozen, currently four, but soon growing into the dozens or hundreds) that serve a piece of software to clients at their remote locations. Our web server is Windows SBS Server 2k3, and the remote servers are Windows Server 2k3.When we have new versions of the software, I upload this new software to a specific directory and rename it; each time the clients boot, they pull their software from that specific directory. With just a few sites, it's no problem for me to RDP in and copy the files over. As the number grows, this will quickly become quite unwieldy. So I'm thinking that WebDAV would be part of a solution, so that I could simply push the newest version to our server (Windows SBS Server 2003) and make it available to the sites to grab. However, on the remote server side, what are some suggestions for automating the download? I only want the servers to download the files during downtime (between 3 AM and 9 AM), and I only want them to download if there is a new version available. I had thought of writing a program that checked the files on the WebDAV server at a regular interval, compared a hash of the current software to a hash of the software on the server, and only downloaded if they were different, but I'm wondering if there is something I am unaware of that can automate the process.

• MultiView 2000 terminal emulator not printing correctly to Generic/Text Printer on Windows 7

  Guys & gals, Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix? • MICR / Check printing

  I want to print my own checks on blank stock from Quicken and QuickBooks. To do so, I need a virtual driver that intercepts the print output from Quicken formats the fields properly, and adds the MICR text at the bottom of the check. This is for Windows 7 or OS X. I have looked at the following: CHAX Works, but crashes a LOT. Not giving me confidence. It is also expensive. VersaCheck Looks promising but looks like it suffers severe feature bloat. I just want to print check and deposit slips, thank you. Ganson Is only for high volume really. It is also designed for batch use vs I just want to print to a virtual printer. More than $2500. GnuMICR is more of a science project. Not yet ready to use and has not been updated for years. There are a lot of solutions on the web, so please don't just google for me. I am looking for specific experience with good solid check printing solution. Thanks!!!

• Windows 7 Printing Issue

  I am using Windows 7 RTM x64. From Control Panel Devices and Printers, I have three printers listed; Fax, XPS Writer, and a Lexmark. I can print a test page through the printer properties with no problem. I can print a text file from Notepad with no problem. I can't print from Safari. When I press Ctrl+P, it displays the Print dialog, press OK and nothing happened. I can't print from Adobe Reader. When I press Ctrl+P, it complains that it there is no printer installed. I can't print from Office applications. When I press Ctrl+P, it crashes immediately. Running Office Diagnostics does not help. I can't print from IE8. When I press Ctrl+P, it displays the Print dialog, complains that I have to select a printer from the list, selected any of the three printers, the Print button is disabled. Any help? Update (01/11/2009): The default printer is the Lexmark. I'm testing on this one as well. I was about to reinstall Office (as this is the first application that has the problem), but then I tried other, some behave similarly but not identical (maybe caused by different printing implementation). On those applications that is able to display printer selection dialog, I tried the Lexmark and XPS. Neither printed anything (paper for Lexmark, file for XPS). Update (01/12/2009): It seems that my Windows installation is botched. A colleague have similar hardware/software combination (it's the same workstation model and Windows 7 x64) and his can print perfectly fine. I tried adding the printer from his share, no joy. I can test print from the printer property, I can print from Notepad, but not from any other application.

• Printing on Windows 8 with PDF viewer (Adobe Reader) from network

  i have a problem with the Adobe Reader 8, but the problem seems to be equally bad with other pdf viewers. Here is the configuration: My PDF viewer is located on network drive "Z:" which is the network adress \dgs-main\progs. I tried to start the adobe reader from here - \\dgs-main\progs\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe and open the PDF from here - C:\Users\ServiceDesk\AppData\Local\Temp\GeneratedPDF.pdf The problem is as follows, if i open the PDF with a local PDF viewer everything works fine and i can print the document. If i open the PDF with the Network PDF viewer then it opens, but printing is impossible. The error message states: "Unable to start print job. Is printer available?" As mentioned above, it works with a local pdf viewer. In both cases i use the same printer. The Printer is a network printer but even with a local printer it fails. The error occurs only on Windows 8 machines. On windows 7 it works fine. I Hope somebody can tell me what the problem is. Thanks in advance and have a fine day.

• QR Codes Printing, but Not Printing Correctly - Any Ideas?

  I am mail merging some QR codes via file paths stored in Excel into a label template in MS Word 2013. I have the whole process with the Ctrl+F9 working properly, but I am stumped on this: On the 30 label sheet I am trying to print I have 6 labels that are repeating information, and stored in duplicated rows in Excel for this print job. All of the labels have 2 images on them, one is a logo and the other one is a unique QR code for that person. For the first set of 6 labels that print out, everything works perfect. However, from the 2nd time the information is printed onward all of the merged fields and logo look correct, but the QR codes are printing strangely. Basically it's the QR code as I want it, but with a copy of itself covering the top left 25% of the QR code. Print preview doesn't show this happening, only once it's printed does it come out like this. I've been trying everything I can think of to fix this and don't know what to do. So far I've: Recreated the document several times, tried duplicating the images in the source folder and giving the links in the Excel document new file paths in case the mail merge feeding from the same .jpg was an issue (even though it's not a problem with the logo) Any help or insight is greatly appreciate because this is a test run for a larger batch run that I need to get done soon :( Thank you!

• Automated unit testing, integration testing or acceptance testing

  TDD and unit testing seems to be the big rave at the moment. But it is really that useful compared to other forms of automated testing? Intuitively I would guess that automated integration testing is way more useful than unit testing. In my experience the most bugs seems to be in the interaction between modules, and not so much the actual (usual limited) logic of each unit. Also regressions often happened because of changing interfaces between modules (and changed pre and post-conditions.) Am I misunderstanding something, or why are unit testing getting so much focus compared to integration testing? It is simply because it is assumed that integration testing is something you have, and unit testing is the next thing we need to learn to apply as developers? Or maybe unit testing simply yields the highest gain compared to the complexity of automating it? What are you experience with automated unit testing, automated integration testing, and automated acceptance testing, and in your experience what has yielded the highest ROI? and why? If you had to pick just one form of testing to be automated on your next project, which would it be? Thanks in advance.

  It's the "printing question guy" again. Looking for a third-party solution to print PDFs, preferable from a service. I have seen some arguments against it, but due to our use case, this really is the preferred solution - the service will be receiving messages from a messaging bus, and there shouldn't be any sort of delay between the receipt of that message and the printing of the report. So far, I've found 1 solution from PDF Tools that seems very nice, and very flexible. The problem is that it's licensed per server.   We are looking into silent printing of PDF documents from within Java. The printing will be invoked from the desktop and not through a browser so we cannot use JavaScript. PDF Renderer is an operational solution but their rendering quality is not acceptable. iText does not seem to be pluggable with the Java print service. There are some commercial Java libraries, jPDFPrint by Qoppa, JPedal, and ICEpdf which we have not tried out yet. Does anybody have any experience with PDF silent printing from Java?

• Printing complex widgets in Qt

  I have a complex widget with tons of different subwidgets, e.g. subclasses of QLabel. I want to print this widget, but obviously I do not want to print the background, I want to print with differing text colors or have the style of frames slightly modified. As I do not really want to iterate through all subwidgets with a special "print" function, which I would need to attach to all widgets (how to add "print" to a QLabel?), I would like to use paintEvent. If I have a hierarchy MyWidget - derived from - some QWidget, I would like to insert a sublayer MyWidget - MyPrintWidget - some QWidget, where myPrintWidget::paintEvent would check, if the current print is going to the screen (thus call QWidget::paintEvent), else if we are printing to the printer, call some function MyPrintWidget::drawWidget instead. Is this the right way to print-enable a widget? How can I figure out in paintEvent, that I'm printing to a printer instead of the screen? Is there a good example of printing complex widgets?

  Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit upgrade (dual boot with Win-7). Custom PC, onboard NVidia graphics. Motherboard: ECS EliteGroup GF8200A Black Series "HP LaserJet 3015" multifunction printer. Graphics printing fine with UB12.04, VERY SLOW on UB12.10. Per an article ran: ~$ sudo apt-get install mesa-utils ~$ glxinfo | grep renderer Output: OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8200/integrated/SSE2/3DNOW! Do I need to get a graphics card to fix or will software tweaks solve this?

I tried searching to know about it in details but almost all searches end up at things like PHPUnit. Could someone please put some light on the theory behind automated tests?   I am receiving some strange begaviour in IE6 when printing a page. For some reason it is printing out parts of a CSS background image sprite. I have overridden all background-image declarations with: * {background-image:none !important;} But to no avail. I didn't think background images were supported by default anyways so this is a new one on me.

  I'm looking for a tool to do some automated GUI testing on a HTML5 canvas component we're developing. Basically I'm looking for a tool that is able to record the clicks and events on the canvas component and is able to replay those events. So far most of the testing tools like Telerik WebUI Testing Suite, Selenium, TestSwarm, qUnit, Jasmine, Hudson seems that they don't fully support HTML5 canvas testing. Would you guys know a testing tool that already supports that ? If not, would you know how companies are doing automated testing of HTML5 canvas ? Thanks, Andy N.

• The Work Order Printing Challenge

  One of the biggest concerns we've heard from maintenance practitioners is the ability to print and batch print work order details along with its accompanying attachments. Indeed, maintenance workers traditionally rely on work order packets to complete their job. A standard work order packet can include a variety of information like equipment documentation, operating instructions, checklists, end-of-task feedback forms and the likes. Now, the problem is that most Asset Lifecycle Management applications do not provide a simple and efficient solution for process printing with document attachments. Work order forms can be easily printed but attachments are usually left out of the printing process. This sounds like a minor problem, but when you are processing high volume of work orders on a regular basis, this inconvenience can result in important inefficiencies. In order to print work order and its related attachments, maintenance personnel need to print the work order details and then go back to the work order and open each individual attachment using the proper authoring application to view and print each document. The printed output is collated into a work order packet. The AutoVue Document Print Service products that were just released in April 2010 aim at helping organizations address the work order printing challenge. Customers and partners can leverage the AutoVue Document Print Services to build a complete printing solution that complements their existing print server solution with AutoVue's document- and platform-agnostic document print services. • Disable header/footer printing from Chrome

  The Chrome browser doesn't have any settings for changing or disabling header and footer data that gets printed when you go File Print. Apparently this is being developed but until it is does anyone know how to disable this in Windows XP. Chrome on the Mac and Ubuntu doesn't do it so I assume it is down to a system setting that by default doesn't print header/footer information unless software over-rides this?
