  I would like to create a custom Ubuntu image based on Natty using Ubuntu Customization Kit. I also want to customize the icons appearing on the Unity Launcher. I can change the icons on my desktop system with the following command: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites "['firefox.desktop', 'nautilus-home.desktop', 'libreoffice-writer.desktop']" I tried to run this command from the UCK console while creating the Live CD, but it doesn’t seem to work. Do you have any ideas how I could solve this?

• Custom Live CD using UCK

  I am trying to create a custom live iso that I can place onto thumb drives for the purpose of using putty to program Cisco switches and routers. I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on a laptop and also installed UCK. I used the desktop image for 14.04 and created a custom ISO. I was able to run terminal and install the putty application and add a new user. I added the new user to the dialout group so they could then access the serial port. I am not exactly where I want to be yet, but it is a start. I have loaded the ISO to a USB drive using netbootin, but it will not boot into the live cd for me to test that everything works the way I need in the image. Is this because of the image I used? Any help would be great. Thank you.

• Why does my CD Tray keep popping open?

  I have Ubuntu server - Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS and I can't figure out why my CD tray is opening all the time. I have looked into /var/log/auth.log, cron list and found nothing. The eject command closes tray and then it gets opened again. The server has a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) setup and I can't afford to restart it now. How can I find out who or which program is popping the tray open? Which programs can cause this behavior?

  I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and want to upgrade it to 12.04. I have downloaded 12.04 from the Ubuntu site and burned as ISO image CD in a DVD (because it is 701.3MB). When I insert this DVD into my drive for installation, it does not boot. A blank black screen appears. In 8.10 when I click on update to 9.04 it shows some error. Ubuntu 8.10 is not as good as 12.04. Please friends help me to solve this problem. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 in my pc.

I have an audio cd, which has audio files with the file format as .cda ( CD Audio Track ). Each one of these files have a size of 1 KB each, and the rest of the CD has nothing else.   Hello Community, I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it seems to work flawlessly. But today I tried to check some CDs and I was surprised that Ubuntu doesn't automatically refresh the CD/DVDs inserted in my media drive. I had to eject manually the CD/DVD from Ubuntu and then Insert the new CD and only then Ubuntu reads the data in the newly inserted CD/DVD. How can I fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a CD-burning feature for a Java-based music player for my school project. Since I'm new to real-life programming (I've only learned to write codes on AP Computer Science A level), I don't know how I can apply the concepts I learned from APCS A to this task. A friend of mine who is studying computer science at graduate school told me to "look up the cd player control functions and add methods in those classes to read in data that you want to write to the CD, write it to a buffer, write everything in the buffer to the CD itself, clear the buffer and then write a new chunk of data into the buffer," but I can't quite grasp what this means, and tt's really hard to contact her right now because she's busy working on her dissertation. Can someone from this forum please guide me through & explain the general concepts? Thank you!

I am using Nero 9 and am very displeased that the manuals available to me online explain very little. My current problem is that when I burn to DVD, my beautiful screen capture ends up being cropped. Through endless amounts of googling I am under the impression that this is due to aspect ratio. However, as windows will not tell me the resolution size for me to determine the correct aspect ratio I do not know how to proceed. Is there a way using Nero 9 for me to be able to burn my screen capture to DVD? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

• Error burning DVD using Devede on Ubuntu 9.04

  I'm trying to burn a DVD in DeVeDe under ubuntu -- on my computer it's already in DVD format (a VIDEO_TS folder) but when I try and drag it into DeVeDe it says "Some files weren't video files. None added." From looking at it, all the files look like they belong there, just from doing this a few times already and seeing all the files contained in a DVD. The file extensions in the folder are: VOB BUP IFO and the files are all named like VTS_02_1.VOB. I have tried excluding the IFO files when dragging them into DeVeDe but get the same error. Is the problem in the types of files in the DVD data or is the DVD corrupt?

• Burning Xvid and Dvix Files problems

  Hi I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition and Nero 8. Recently I noticed that every time I go to nero and burn a dvix/xvid file as a data DVD and try to play it in a dvd player that supports these types it does not load up and play. I then go to my XP machine with Nero 6 on it and burn the exact same file as a data DVD and it works in the exact same dvd player. I am not sure why this is happening? I am not sure if it is windows 7, nero 8 or my actual dvd burner that is the problem. How should I go about and figure out what the problem is? Thanks

  Hi, When I burn my files to a DVD using the Windows 7 drag and drop I can't actually see my files. Windows doesn't seem to finsih the DVD, even though I have followed the steps to do this. When I put the dvd in my XP machine it can see the files - so I know they are definatley being written correctly. Why can't I seem to finsh the DVD correctly? Is there some view I have set to see files already written? Thanks

• Live CD has black screen HP DV6

  Attempting to install/try ubuntu (11.10, 12.04) on my new laptop, using a liveCD (and tried USB). I get the purple screen (with the man/keyboard at the bottom) and after that the screen flashes bright white before going black. Ubuntu continues to load in the background, with login sound etc but the screen is off. I have tried as many different solutions as I could find including: using nomodestep, xforcevesa, i915.modeset=0, and also now i915.modeset=1 in boot options (seperately): varying consequences, but either I end up at a blinking cursor with no prompt, a command line (startx fails: no screen found), or the original blank screen again Tried booting from VirtualBox - it crashes at the same place the screen would go blank when using a CD/USB tried 11.04: I don't have this problem BUT when trying to install, I get a ubi-partman error 141 (possibly down to the three partitions that came on my laptop... not sure why HP needed there own separate partition for HP Tools...) Model: HP Pavillion DV6 6B08SA Processor: AMD Quad-Core A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD 6545G2 Dual Graphics (1.6 GHZ 4 MB L2 cache ) Chipset: AMD RS880M Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to partition the drive and install Ubuntu. I'm assuming the issue is graphics card related, although I have no confirmation of that. Update: Tried the ?orkarounds on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen - set gfxpayload=text changed nothing, removing splash did nothing and setting vesafb.nonsense=1 did nothing either. • How would I write a virtual CD/DVD burner that would allow programs that burn to write to ISO?

  I want to write an app that will allow a program like iTunes which normally will recognize a DVD/CD burner to recognize a virtual one and then write to it creating an ISO. I would guess to use C/C++... can someone point me in the right direction as to how this can be done? Basically it would be a virtual CD/DVD burner that would output an ISO file to the hard drive. I want to do this for both the usefulness of it as well as the challenge, just need an idea of how to approach it, have no idea how to write virtual hardware.

• Verify burned CD image

  Is there a way to verify a CD image (.iso) after it has been burned (and either the CD burning software does not have a "verify" option, or it was not used at the time of burning)? I tried ripping the CD using dd and comparing the md5sum of that image and the original, but they don't match. I didn't really expect them to, but I'm pretty sure this disc burned without errors (I just want to be sure since this is a master disc to be sent off to be duplicated).

  I would like to burn a CD using a Mac (10.5) which I can then access from a Solaris 10 x86 machine. This partially works: Insert blank CD and let the Finder open it so it creates a "Recordable CD" window for it. Drag the files to be burned into the "Recordable CD" window Burn (there are no options except for speed) Then to mount in Solaris: mount -f hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/foo /mnt/bar The problem here is that Solaris will see all the filenames as lower case and it will only allow each file name to contain one period (these are HSFS limitations). My guess is that the Mac is not burning the disc with the Rock Ridge extensions that allow for the full file names to be preserved. Is there some combination of burning tools/options and mount options that will make this work?

• permission denied when trying to execute a binary I burned to a CD-R

  On a UBUNTU karmic machine, I burned a cd from the command prompt using: cdrecord -v speed=16 dev=0,1,0 /FPS.iso The CD now contains an executable and some files. I tested the cd by loading it onto another machine (Red Hat 5.3) and when I try to run the program I get the following message: bash: ./FPS1_1: Permission denied I can open other files like text documents (the executable also comes with shared libraries). I realized I had burned the cd as root so I burned another one as another user but I still got the same problem. How can I remove this permission or what is the problem? P.S. the image was in / if that helps
