  • Automatically mounting windows share in Fedora 12

    - by user15865
Hi, I'm trying to automatically mount a windows share in a Fedora 12 instance (FC12). When I manually mount things work: mount -t cifs //nas01/servers -o username=guest, password=myPassword /mnt/nas01/servers If I update /etc/fstab with the following: //nas01/servers /mnt/nas01/servers cifs username=guest, password=myPassword 0 0 Nothing happens after reboot. The thing that has me baffled is after a reboot if I run: mount -a The share is mounted. Any ideas on this? Thank you, Martin

    - by user1632812
I have this line and it works mount -t cifs -o myuser //192.168.0.12/Public/Docs /mnt/cifs_shares/Docs But then I try with autofs and it doesn't In /etc/auto.master: /mnt/cifs_shares/Docs /etc/auto.cifs_shares and in /etc/auto.cifs_shares Docs -fstype=cifs,rw,noperm,credentials=/etc/credentials.txt ://192.168.0.12/Public/Docs it seems that the thing gets mounted actually, but it turns to be empty. • Windows 2008 R2 SMB / CIFS Logging to diagnose Brother MFC Network Scanning

    - by Steven Potter
I am attempting to setup network scanning on a brother MFC-9970CDW printer. According to the Brother documentation, the printer is setup to connect to any CIFS network share. I applied all of the appropriate setting in the printer however I get a "sending error" when I try to scan a document. When I look at the logs of the 2008 R2 server that I am attempting to connect to; I can see in the security log where the printer successfully authenticates, however nothing else is logged. I would assume that immediately after the authentication, the printer is making a CIFS request and some sort of error is occurring, however I can't seem to find any way to log this information to find out what is going on. Is it possible to get Windows 2008 to log SMB/CIFS traffic? Followup: I installed Microsoft netmon and captured the packets associated with the transaction: 510 3:04:28 PM 7/9/2012 34.4277743 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 SMB SMB:C; Negotiate, Dialect = NT LM 0.12 {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 511 3:04:28 PM 7/9/2012 34.4281246 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Negotiate, Dialect is NT LM 0.12 (#0), SpnegoToken (1.3.6.1.5.5.2) {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 519 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.8986214 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 SMB SMB:C; Session Setup Andx, NTLM NEGOTIATE MESSAGE {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 520 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.8989310 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Session Setup Andx, NTLM CHALLENGE MESSAGE - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (22) STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 522 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9022870 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 SMB SMB:C; Session Setup Andx, NTLM AUTHENTICATE MESSAGEVersion:v2, Domain: CORP, User: PRINTSUPOFF, Workstation: BRN001BA9AD1FE6 {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 523 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9032421 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Session Setup Andx {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 525 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9051855 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 SMB SMB:C; Tree Connect Andx, Path = \\192.168.1.10\IPC$, Service = ????? {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 526 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9053083 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Tree Connect Andx, Service = IPC {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 528 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9073573 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 DFSC DFSC:Get DFS Referral Request, FileName: \\192.168.1.10\NSCFILES, MaxReferralLevel: 3 {SMB:33, SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 529 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9152042 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Transact2, Get Dfs Referral - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (549) STATUS_NOT_FOUND {SMB:33, SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 531 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9169738 System 192.168.1.134 192.168.1.10 SMB SMB:C; Tree Disconnect {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} 532 3:04:29 PM 7/9/2012 34.9170688 System 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.134 SMB SMB:R; Tree Disconnect {SMBOverTCP:30, TCP:29, IPv4:22} As you can see, the DFS referral fails and the transaction is shut down. • How do I mount Samba share as non-root user

    - by Android Eve
Is there a step-by-step tutorial that instructs in detailed step-by-step how to smbmount a Samba share to be used by a non-root user on a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop? Note: there are numerous threads on Google search dealing with this seemingly new problem. Instructions that used to work on Ubuntu 8.04 (or an older version of smbfs) no longer work. I need something fresh, punctual and especially reproducible. Thanks.

  • How to make gvfs-smb always use UTF8

    - by Didier
The problem is that if I make an entry in /etc/fstab to mount a samba share I can give the option iocharset=utf8 and this then mounts the share correctly and in the right encoding with special characters displayed correctly. Gnomes automount system for some reason never gets this right and I can find nowhere to change its settings. Is there a way to make it always use UTF8 by default? This is with Ubuntu 10.10 and the system can display the characters involved.

  • Argument list too long and copying to Samba Share

    - by Copy Run Start
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit. I'm trying to make a scheduled task copy from a directory with thousands of files to a samba share (while skipping duplicates). I mapped my Samba share through the GUI. The command I tried: cp /home/security/Brick/* ~/.gvfs/"cam on atm-bak-01.local/Brick" -n I found this but I don't know how to change the syntax to what I need. find -maxdepth 1 -name '*.prj' -exec mv -t ../prjshp {} + Any hints are greatly appreciated.

  • Setting Linux UID on NFS volume from EMC NX4

    - by ethrbunny
I have an EMC NX4 from which there are several CIFS shares with corresponding NFS mount points. The CIFS user ids seem fine but when viewed from Linux they are all 327xx numbers and can't be set from the file system. (IE CHOWN doesn't work - permission denied). On our other (older) EMC devices we used an MMC app to set the Linux UID for each user. I don't seem to have such an app on the 'Applications and Tools' CD for this new device. Is there some other method for setting these? Did I setup the system incorrectly?

  • Virtual Lan on the Cloud -- Help Confirm my understanding?

[Note: Tried to post this over at ServerFault, but I don't have enough 'points' for more than one link. Powers that be, move this question over there.] Please give this a quick read and let me know if I'm missing something before I start trying to make this work. I'm not a systems admin professional, and I'd hate to end up banging my head into the wall if I can avoid it. Goals: Create a 'road-warrior' capable star shaped virtual LAN for consultants who spend the majority of their time on client sites, and who's firm has no physical network or servers. I have never used a Linux system in an AD environment before and am trying to join my laptop running Ubuntu to join our Active Directory (DC is a Windows Server 2008 machine) using Likewise-open. Using the GUI wizard, I have joined the domain. I can mount network shares using CIFS Problem: I only have read access to our fileserver. What more is needed to get the AD to recognize me as a user who has the appropriate rights? Any help is appreciated.

  • How to keep group-writeable shares on Samba with OSX clients?

    - by Oliver Salzburg
I have a FreeNAS server on a network with OSX and Windows clients. When the OSX clients interact with SMB/CIFS shares on the server, they are causing permission problems for all other clients. Update: I can no longer verify any answers because we abandoned the project, but feel free to post any help for future visitors. The details of this behavior seem to also be dependent on the version of OSX the client is running. For this question, let's assume a client running 10.8.2. When I mount the CIFS share on an OSX client and create a new directory on it, the directory will be created with drwxr-x-rx permissions. This is undesirable because it will not allow anyone but me to write to the directory. There are other users in my group which should have write permissions as well. This behavior happens even though the following settings are present in smb.conf on the server: [global] create mask= 0666 directory mask= 0777 [share] force directory mode= 0775 force create mode= 0660 I was under the impression that these settings should make sure that directories are at least created with rwxrwxr-x permissions. But, I guess, that doesn't stop the client from changing the permissions after creating the directory. When I create a folder on the same share from a Windows client, the new folder will have the desired access permissions (rwxrwxrwx), so I'm currently assuming that the problem lies with the OSX client. I guess this wouldn't be such an issue if you could easily change the permissions of the directories you've created, but you can't. When opening the directory info in Finder, I get the old "You have custom access" notice with no ability to make any changes. I'm assuming that this is caused because we're using Windows ACLs on the share, but that's just a wild guess. Changing the write permissions for the group through the terminal works fine, but this is unpractical for the deployment and unreasonable to expect from anyone to do. • Plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together

    - by lpfavreau
Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

  • Windows shared printers: Process job on server machine, not the client

    - by asr
Hi. While working with Linux clients to Windows SMB/CIFS filesharing servers, from time to time I find myself having to print to a printer with no drivers available under Linux. For some reason, the Windows computer expects the job to be sent in an already processed format, so it can be fed directly to the printer in its own, weird language. It would be great if I could send the print job in Postscript or other standard format to the Windows computer sharing this printer, and then this PS could be processed under Windows. Is there a way to accomplish this? Because I don't seem to find the option. Thanks a lot.

  • Mounting windows shares with Active Directory permissions

    - by Jamie
I've managed to get my Ubuntu (server 10.04 beta 2) box to accept logins from users with Active Directory credentials, now I'd like those users to access there permissible windows shares on a W2003 R2 server. The Windows share ("\srv\Users\") has subdirectories named according to the domain account users and permissions are set accordingly. I would like to preserve these permissions, but don't know how to go about it. Would I mount as an AD administrator or have each user mount with there own AD credentials? How do determine between using mount.smbfs or mount.cifs?

  • Backup Exec backup-to-disk folder creation - Access denied

    - by ewwhite
I'm having a difficult time creating a backup-to-disk folder in Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Backup Exec 2010. The backend storage is a Nexenta/ZFS-based NAS filer sharing the volume via CIFS. I've also seen the issue on other *nix-based NAS devices. I've attempted mapping the drive, providing the full paths to the folder, etc. I can browse to the share just fine from within Windows, but Backup Exec fails to create the B2D folder with different variants of a Unable to create new backup folder. Access denied error. I've attempted creating service accounts in Backup Exec to handle the authentication, but nothing seems to work. What's the key to making this work?

  • Error mounting samba share, cannot mount block device xxxx read-only

    - by Jeff Ward
After installing Ubuntu 12.04, I'm trying to mount a samba share from Windows under Linux, using a scripted command that's always worked, and the server hasn't changed. The error is as follows: $ mount -t cifs //<host>/<share> /media/<share> -o username=<user>,password=<pass> mount: block device //<host>/<share> is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: cannot mount block device //<host>/<share> read-only $ I've read a lot of discussions about permissions, but unfortunately, that wasn't the issue. I'm submitting my own answer below for reference, hope this helps someone else.

  • GVFS Locations Not Available In ~/.gvfs

    - by Aaron Copley
So, I can mount GVFS locations correctly (specifically CIFS) either from the Gnome "Places" menu, or via the command line gvfs-mount, but the filesystem is not mounted in the expected location; ~/.gvfs. In fact, running the mount command does not list any GVFS filesystem at all. This is reproducible for non-root users while the root user behaves as expected. Strace reveals a permissions error for the user mounting the filesystem for the path /home/username/.gvfs. Ownership and permissions are correct and there are no extended attributes for the path as revealed by lsattr. Also, /root/.gvfs and /home/username/.gvfs are on the same filesystem. All packages are current. Any ideas?

  • Offline cache copies in Windows file sharing

    - by netvope
I frequently access media files (music or video) on a remote Windows file share. My Internet connection is not very fast, and I find it a waste of bandwidth when I repeatedly access the same files. For example, I may listen to the same song 30 times in a month. So, I would like to cache files I've used. I know Windows has an "Always available offline" feature but I dont' think it suit my needs. I don't want to make the whole share "available offline" as the remote Windows file share is huge (in terabytes). Making individual files "available offline" is tedious as the files are scattered in many different directories. It would be much more convenient if the system can simply cache those I've used. I could also manually make a local copy each time I use a file... but this is even more troublesome than making each file "available offline" Also The files on the share seldom change. Many of the files are rarely used. Some of the files are frequently used. I don't have a list of the most frequently used files. It would be the best if I could tell Windows to cache the last accessed 10GB, but apparently it doesn't have this feature. So I think the best way is to have a SMB/CIFS caching proxy. What do you think? I have a Linux box sitting around. Perhaps I should try to setup samba4?

  • What is going on when I can't access an SMB server share (not accessible error) until I run cmdkey to delete the credential?

    - by Warren P
I have a network connection share issue. The first connection works, and seems to stay connected for at least a few hours. However, after each time my windows 7 PC reboots, it can no longer form a network connection to the shared folder, nor browse to it, until I not only unmap and remap the mapped drive, but also, I have to use cmdkey to delete the stored credentials like this: cmdkey /delete:Domain:target=HOSTNAME My work PC is on a domain, and I am not the IT administrator, but I'm curious if there is anything I can do to investigate this issue. Any settings in registry or group policy that I could examine to see why the first connection works, but each subsequent attempt (once a stored credential exists) to browse or use the connection, fails with a connection error saying it is "not accessible", like this: I do not even get any error until at least several minutes go by. THe first thing I see is a window frozen and empty, and then I get this error: This has happened when connecting to a share on a DROBO device, and on a share which is not on the domain, but which was a Microsoft Home Server. I wonder if there's something broken in WIndows 7 professional with regards to connecting to non-domain shares when an active directory domain controller exists, and a particular workstation is joined to a domain? The problem only occurs if I click "remember credentials". It is not fixed by any amount of working with net use. Usingcmdkey to delete all stored credentials for the host is the only way to get back in, and it affects all non-domain shared folders. Update I'm hoping there are some registry locations I could check that could be misconfigured in some way that might explain why SMB/CIFS stored credentials for non-domain systems seem to be auto-invalidated in this weird way. Knowing how whacko Microsoft Windows domain and security handling is sometimes, this could be some kind of stupid "feature".

  • Photoshop CS5 performance over network drive (cifs)

    - by grub
Hello Everyone I did install a QNAP NAS TS410 for a customer (professional photographer) with 3 Hitachi Deskstar 7200rpm 2TB disk configured as RAID5. The NAS and the workstations are connected over a Gigabit network. He and his co-worker are accessing the photos (about 1TB of photos) over a mapped network drive from their windows machines (Windows XP - 32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit). Both are using Photoshop CS5 to edit the photos. The problem is that to save a edited photo takes a really long time, it takes about 3 times as long to save a photo as to open it. After some tests I can exclude the network, the NAS and the windows machines as source of the issue. I think the problem is the Photoshop software and its handling of the network drives. Officially network drives are not supported by Adobe. I do not have any experience with the Adobe products, especially with Adobe Photoshop CS5. What are your recommendation to solve the performance issue? Should my customer copy the photos to the local drive, edit them and upload them again to the network drive or is Adobe Drive or Adobe Version Cue the answer? One requirement is that the photos need to be accessible / editable from both computers even when one of them is offline. Adobe Version Cue needs a dedicated service running to be usable, so this solution is not possible as far as I understand the Cue software. Thank you for your input to this issue and have a nice day :-) Greetings grub

  • Accessing CIFS shares from an OS X machine incredibly slow

    - by Aron Rotteveel
This is a longshot, because this issue seems over-reported and unanswered on the internet (see references below), but it is about time this issue is permanently solved. The facts: Server: Windows Server 2008, acting as a file server Client: OS X Lion 10.7.3. Method of connecting: directly via IP through Finder: smb://192.168.1.100/share The problem: The initial connection attempt takes about a minute. After the connection is made, it takes one more minute to show the directories in Finder. After navigating to any other directory, it takes several seconds/minutes to parse the directory, seemingly based on the size of the contents. Actually, my entire Finder has this problem after connecting. When using Finder to show my desktop, it can literally take up to a minute to load. Obviously, this is not right. I have no clue how to fix this and would appreciate any help I can get. I am unsure about other relevant information I can provide, but if there is any, please let me know so I can update the post. I seem to be not the only one having this problem: Most importantly, an apple.stackexchange.com entry. Unsolved and unanswered. Several users on the Apple support forums. Users on EduGeek.

  • Record locking problem between linux and Windows

    - by PabloG
I need to run a bunch of old DOS FoxPro / Clipper applications in linux under DOSEMU. The programs access their "databases" located on a network server (could be a Windows or Linux server) Actually, the programs ran fine, but I cannot manage to make the record locking work as supposed: I can run a program in two terminals (or the server and any terminal for instance) and lock the same record in both. Now, I'm using Tiny Core Linux as terminal and Windows XP as server, accesing the shared files via CIFS and the latest DOSEMU (1.4.0), but I tried with various combinations of server (Ubuntu 7 to 9, Damn Small Linux, XP) <- protocol (CIFS, samba, various versions of smbclient) <- client (same as server) with no luck I tried to configure the server part to work without oplocks in samba (after reading the entire O'Reilly Samba book locking chapter in http://oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch05_05.html ) and in XP (\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\UseOpportunisticLocking = 0) but the problem persist. Any ideas? TIA, Pablo

Based on my Research thus far, to accomplish this, I'll need: OpenVPN with Bridging Enabled to create a star shaped "virtual" LAN http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/miscellaneous/76-ethernet-bridging.html A Road Warrior Network Configuration, as described in this Shorewall article (lower down the page) http://www.shorewall.net/OPENVPN.html Configure bridge addressesing (probably DHCP) http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/faq.html#bridge-addressing Configure CIFS / Samba to accept VPN IP address http://serverfault.com/questions/137933/howto-access-samba-share-over-vpn-tunnel Set up Client software, with keys configured for access (potentially through a OpenVPN-Sa client portal) http://www.openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/download-openvpn-as/221-installation-overview.html
