  • Strange noise from my laptop when it is closed

    I am fan of powerfull PCs with huge wide screen monitors but I have bought an laptop as gift to my parents. This is the description: "second-handed" lenovo (and there is a sign "ThinkPad" Intel Core Duo CPU T6570 2.10 GHz 64 bits Windows 7 Ultimate and the issue is that when the laptop is turn on and then closed, after a interval of time (I am not sure how much exactly but I believe it is several hours) a strange noise come from the laptop. The noise is something like a "start-up" noise of old computers. I first thought this is some hardware issue but everything seems to work fine. Has anyone an idea what can cause this type of noise or a what can I do in order to track the problem down? I am not sure if this is a important thing, but the laptop is always connected to the power. Note: I have just noticed that the sound is generated again when the laptop is closed and then opened.   • Mint 13 does nothing when laptop lid is closed

    I have a laptop running Mint 13. I have it hooked up to a 30" monitor and have no use for the laptop being open, so I put it on a shelf and close it. When I do that, the monitor goes blank. The power manager does not have an option for doing nothing when the lid is closed. The options are "Blank Screen", "Suspend", and "Shutdown". Is there a way to make the laptop not go to a blank screen when the lid is closed?

  • Getting data from closed files with concatenate formula

    Each day a program is creating an excel file for me with some data for the current day. Like what is the price for products, how many people are available today and things like that. Based on all this I need to make some forecasts and workplace allocations for workers. The problem is, that I need to drag all this information manually all the time. So to make it automatic I placed the formula in cells like: ='c:\ABC\[ABC 29-01-14.xlsx]sheet'!a1 Everything works fine, but next day I have to change file name for "ABC 30-01-14" for each cell, what is the same as entering the data manually. So I used "concatenate" formula to change date according to today's date automatically. I used "indirect" formula to turn it in to a real formula, not text string, and realized that it is working only for open files, not closed. Is there any way to do this for closed files without VBA, because I don't know it, or with VBA but explained for an idiot.

I tried removing and reinstalling OpenSSH, checked authorized_keys and ~/.ssh permissions and tried connecting from other computers only to get the same error. I'm at my wits end, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm trying to create a small HTTP proxy that can re-write the request/headers as needed to suit my requirements. If one already exists, please, point me to it. Otherwise... I've written something that ALMOST works. It can do the proxy function, but not the re-write (yet). Problem is, I can't detect when the remote socket has been closed down without doing a blocking read. It is CRITICAL for the functionality of this thing that it be able to detect the socket being closed without blocking. I have SCOURED the Java API documentation, and I can't find ANY indication that it is even possible.     Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I'm using 12.04 beta. Today I was prompted to install some updates, which I did, followed by a reboot. On reboot, X starts, but all I see is a single dialog window in the middle of the screen with the text: Failed to load session 'ubuntu' I don't even see the mouse, or the login screen, just this 1 line of text. When I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to run dist-upgrade from a command prompt, I get this: The following packages have been kept back: libgnome-desktop-3-2 So to see why it was kept back, I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install libgnome-desktop-3-2 ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgnome-desktop-3-2 : Depends: gnome-desktop3-data (= 3.3.92-0ubuntu1) but 3.3.91-0ubuntu2 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.     I updated from 11.10 to 12.04 using the distribution upgrade, after that I couldn't log into using the Unity 3D desktop after logging in I would either never get unity's launcher or I would get the launcher and once I tried to do anything the windows lost their decoration and nothing would respond. If I use Unity 2D it works fine and in fact I'm using it to type this. Is it because they used Java in the server and are as incompetent as people whom write questions for SCJP? Does Sun have any competent employee and have you ever saw one ?     Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? If anyone wants to get some real life karma by giving a tiny non-profit pointers, please advise! I posted a thread about our website with highly variable traffic (www.WorldOceansDay.org). The event is on June 8th, and the traffic goes from 100-400/day in the off-season, to about 200,000 trying to access the site at any one time on June 8th. It's a Wordpress site hosted on GoDaddy shared hosting and predictably crashed horribly. From the internet's feedback, we've decided to move to a cloud server to handle the traffic, but I'm a huge newbie and I don't have very reliable mentorship, so I'm turning to crowdsourcing. We're trying to decide between Amazon Web Services and RackSpace Cloud servers. Our sys admin consultant also suggested GoDaddy's new 4GH but I have had such incredibly bad experiences with GoDaddy thus far that I am hesitant. From what I've read on the internet, RackSpace might be cheaper? Would AWS totally break the bank? We don't have a ton of money to spend on hosting. We'll also be using CloudFlare to cache and serve the pages since they're dynamic. I've found a few AWS & RackSpace calculators but I am not 100% on how to find those numbers... GoDaddy?     I'm researching various database design for historical record keeping - because I would like to implement a prototypical web application that (excessively) tracks changes made by users and let them undo things, see revisions, etc. I'd love use mercurial or git as backend (with files as records) - since they already implement the kind of append-only changes I imagine. I tried git and dulwich (python git API) - and it went ok - but I was concerned about performance; Bi-temporal database design lets you store a row along with time periods, when this record was valid. This sure sound more performant than to operate on files on disk (as in 1.) - but I had little luck finding real-world examples (e.g. from open source projects), that use this kind of design and are approachable enough to learn from them. Revisions à la MediaWiki revisions or an extra table for versions, as in Redmine. The problem here is, that DELETE would take the whole history with it. I looked at NoSQL solutions, too. With a document oriented approach, it would be simple to just store the whole history of an entity within the document itself - which would reduce design plus implementation time in contrast to a RDBMS approach. However, in this case I'm a bit concerned about ACID-properties, which would be important in the application. I'd like ask about experiences about real-world and pragmatic designs for temporal data.

  • Implementing a chat program and thus involving majority of networking concepts [closed]

    Logging the chat messages on the client side. Registration of ALL clients on the server on their start up. Client should be able to add another client on his list for chatting. Server should be able to switch between clients on the basis of FCFS (multithreading). When a client logs in from other side, its friend client should be able to see it online. Now, to add to this, there can be things like sharing text/voice/video files etc, but then the focus will be on compression majorly. With the chat program, my intention is to learn the majority of "networking" concepts. What else, can be implemented (in this chat program) which can brush up my "networking" concepts?

    as title said differences between those 2. I read all the definition and some articles, but I need information about some other aspects. Here is the thing. We want to build a web site that will contain: site, database, uploads, numerous background services that would have to collect information from uploads and from some other sites, parse them etc...I doubt that there are portlets that fits our specific need so we will have to make them our self. So, questions: 1. Deployment ( and difference in cost if possible), is deploying portals much more easier then web app ( java or .net) 2. Server load. Does portal consume much of server power ( and can you strip portal of thing that you do not use) 3. Implementation and developing of portlets. Can u make all the things that you could have done in java or .net? 4. General thoughts of when to use portals and when classic web app. Tnx all in advence...

    Possible Duplicate: What should every programmer know about web development? I have recently started learning about web development and I am currently working on a project that involves web scraping. While doing the project I came across an error which upon doing a little web search made me realize that one must clean the html before processing it further. Similarly, there were a few more interesting things that I had missed. My question is how can I quickly familiarize myself with best practice methods for web development.( I am asking as an an electrical engineer with experience in C/C++/Java and very little experience in web dev).
