  • How to change individual notification icons?

    I'm running Gnome3 (Ubuntu 11.04), and I want to know if its possible to customize my notification icons. For example, in the screenshot provided, I have a skype, and a dropbox icon. As you can see, they look terrible compared to the nicer UI icons to the right (volume, wifi, battery). I would like to know how to change these pesky icons for skype, dropbox, and any other notification that pops up. Thanks!

  • Broken Package error after updating

    I updated my system using 'update-manager' and now I am getting Broken Package error. I went into synaptic package manager and clicked on fix broken packages but then I got this error. E: /var/cache/apt/archives/dockmanager_0.1.0~bzr80-0ubuntu1~10.10~dockers1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/dockmanager/data/skype_away.svg', which is also in package faenza-icon-theme 0.8 I cannot install or remove anything until the broken package fixes. What should I do now?

  • failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled error on boot

    Whenever I boot my laptop, I see this message and it makes the boot process very slow as my screen stays black for a long time before this message appears. It shows just for a split second but today It got worst when my system couldn't boot and stuck on this error, I did several reboots but still couldn't pass this boot error message, then after sometime it fixed itself and now I can use my system as normal. I didn't pay much attention to the error when It was there for just a split second and making my boot process slow, but now that it has stopped me from booting into my system, I would like to know why this error occurring.     I have connected USB keyboard & mouse to core i7 intel processor.When i boot my system in ubuntu with kernel 3.2.21 it runs properly i.e usb keyboard & usb mouse works satisfactorily. ISSUE When i boot my system in linux(ubuntu 3.5.7) USB keyboard & usb Mouse stops working.i have to boot my system by pressing "e" and then "Enter" i.e it directly links with the hardware.Mouse doesnt get power i.e LED under my optical mouse doesnt glow. kindly help me.

  • Dual Boot 10.10 and 11.04 can't boot into 10.10 after an update.

    I've been dual booting my system with Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) and 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) but today after an update, I can't boot into 10.10, there's only option to boot into 11.04 and Grub also looks a bit different. Before this update, I used to see first option for 11.04 and an other option called /dev/sda1 for 10.10 but now there is a new option called Previous Linux Versions, but when I Enter into that menu, there is no option to boot into 10.10 all the options take me to 11.04 now it looks like this... And when I click on Previous Linux Versions...

  • ubuntu 12.04 broken

    I installed PPA package for BITdefender but somehow the package got broken. Because of this I was not able to boot Ubuntu in normal mode. So i booted in recovery mode and completely removed the broken package using synaptic package manager. But even after removing the broken package I'm unable to boot in normal mode. Everytime i try to boot in normal mode I'm greeted with a black screen! Is there any way to fix this?

  • Dynamic Query Generation : suggestion for better approaches

    I am currently designing a functionality in my Web Application where the verified user of the application can execute queries which he wishes to from the predefined set of queries with where clause varying as per user's choice. For example,Table ABC contains the following Template query called SecretReport "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where " SecretReport can have parameters XYZ, ILP. Again XYZ can have values as 1,2 and ILP can have 3,4 so if the user chooses ILP=3, he will get the result of the following query on his screen "Select def as FOO, ghi as BAR from MNO where ILP=3" Again the user is allowed permutations of XYZ / ILP My initial thought is that User will be shown a list of Report names and each report will have parameters and corresponding values. But this approach although technically simple does not appear intuitive. I would like to extend this functionality to a more generic level. Such that the user can choose a table and query based on his requirements. Of course we do not want the end user to take complete control of DB. But only tables and fields that are relevant to him. At present we are defining what is relevant in the code. But I want the Admin to take over this functionality such that he can decide what is relevant and expose the same to the user. On user's side it should be intuitive what is available to him and what queries he can form. Please share your thoughts what is the most user friendly way to provide this feature to the end user.

  • Graphics problem after updating to Kernel 3.11 with Ubuntu 13.04 64bit

    I am new to ubuntu.I have a 64 bit intel processor with ATI 6570 graphics card. Now Ubuntu 13.04 is working fine with stock kernel(3.8). But as I read somewhere that kernel 3.11 do support ATI graphics card better, I tired updating them with no success. I tried 3.11.6 3.11.4 3.11.0 but with all of them I am facing the same problem ... after installing them and restart, the screen resolution get distorted and the unity becomes too slow transparency in dash and the launcher is also lost. Now whatever little I know , this may be related with graphics diver either they are not present or the graphic card is not turned on. Can some one help with this. And yeah i tried ubuntu 13.10 that worked fine but it has some bugs. and yeah please pardon me for my bad English.

  • Application didnt upgraded after upgrading ubuntu to 13.10

    I upgraded my laptop from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Its working like a charm. But I doubt if software-center, file manager, vlc, etc upgraded. Still I am not getting the new versions of softwares in software-center. I am not able to see any new features in file managers as was noted on many blogs. VLC still showing the old version 2.0.8. Its being said that its upgraded to VLC 2.1 or just a dist-upgrade would do the job. But it didn't. Also I need to know the default applications (with version) provided by ubuntu 13.10 Kindly help.

    I am able to map the key combination Right Alt+Left Arrow with <a-left> or by <m-left>. But I am not able to map the Left Alt key. Is there a way to do that? Edit: Just to clarity <a-left> means Alt+Left Arrow. The important question here is what is difference between Left Alt and Right Alt from the perspective of keymappings in Vim?

  • Connecting to server from remote machine

    I wish to connect my machine to a server in some other city. For doing the same I am using the following command: mstsc -v ip_address_of_server remote desktop can't connect to remote computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access to server is not enabled. 2) Remote computer is turned off 3) Remote computer is not available on network. Make sure remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled. As per previous posts I need to turn off my client computers firewall..which I have...but still it gives me the same message. Can someone please please help me out...so as to how i may resolve this?? I am really new to networking, etc. Also when i am pinging: ping ip_address_of server I am getting the following response: Reply from ip_address_of_server: destination host unreachable Also I did try on ubuntu with rdesktop...still its not been able to connect with it. Also i know there are other people who are able to connect their machines with the server remotely. So i guess its not working for me only. Also when I accessed the same machine through LAN I was able to do so.

    I created a dd image of a partition (containing an HFS+ FS) of one of my disks (and not the entire disk) a few days ago using the following command - dd conv=sync,noerror bs=8k if=/dev/sdc2 of=/path/to/img How can I mount it?     Does anyone know of a command or tool to create disk snapshots on Windows 7 (client SKU)? I see vssadmin.exe has a "create shadow" option, but that's available only on server SKUs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788055(v=ws.10).aspx I've a backup tool that replicates changes (creations, modifications and deletions to files and directories) since last backup, to my backup volume. Before each time this happens I want to create a persistent snapshot on my backup volume. I could then mount previous snapshots to view previous backups achieving a behavior similar to that of TimeMachine in OS X.     Microsoft offers the standalone Hyper-V server for free. I'm wondering if I can install roles other than the Hyper-V role on this? I know installing other roles alongside Hyper-V is a bad practice, but what I'm trying to ask is if the Hyper-V Server edition of Windows Server allows installation of other roles, like DNS server, File Server etc. Infact I'm not interested in running Hyper-V, just looking for a free windows server to install some roles on.   • Blue screen of death while installing any Adobe Air application

    Whenever I try to install an Air application I get a Blue Screen and then my system restarts. I cannot even take a screenshot of it. This happens with every air application I try to install. I also searched for the same on Adobe forums and found the same problem being faced by someone else. His problem was resolved by uninstalling a software named "Folder Lock". I searched my hard disk for this software and found one, so I deleted that software (shift+delete) and removed all it's traces from registry too but that still doesn't solved the problem. I also tried disabling the antivirus software and then install the air application but this also didn't helped. Here is the screenshot of the BSOD. I was able to install air applications earlier, but now I can't. Anybody having same sort of problem. One colleague of mine is also having the same problem. Please help me out. My system's config is as follows: Windows XP Home sp3 Flash Builder 4, with SDK 4.1, 3.5 installed in it. Adobe Air v 2.5 1.5 GB RAM 1.66 MHz processor Thanks

    Hello Everyone, It has been quite some time I am struggling to get Ruby On Rails working on my System which is having Windows XP operating system. I am trying to configure ROR to use apache and mysql so that I do not have to install additional servers to run ruby on rails. I also tried InstantRails but faced same problems. I went through the tutorial mentioned in getting rails to wrok on a windows machine running xampp and did all the steps which were necessary. All went fine (installing rails, running the ruby, gem and rails command from command prompt) but when I tried to run my application by typing localhost:3000/say/hello nothing happened and I was redirected to the google page for searching to this keyword. Please help me Thanks

    my problem is about Ip Address which I am receiving on the windows system snmp-trap messages,is some thing like that UDP: [192.168.1.150]:1029->[0.0.0.0]:0 while same trap message on linux system has been displayed as UDP: [192.168.1.150]:1030->[192.168.1.23] Now,if you observed carefully these two ,its clearly shown that server ip is not coming in windows traps-Ip([0.0.0.0]:0).what would be the possible reason?please anyone can help me about understanding this & can provide the solution for this problem.
