  • Global menu stopped working for most applications

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 32 bits and I had been enjoying global menus and HUD since the beginning. However, for some strange reason, I stopped having global menus for most applications and thus no HUD fun anymore. Actually, the only two applications where I continue to have global menus are Thunderbird and Firefox, so not sure if it has something to do with these two... I've already browsed through some similar reports and already tried the following: checking if indicator-appmenu was installed. tried to use Unsettings to switch on and off, with reboots in the middle, global menus. logged in with a different user to see if it was some configuration of my user. also checked, using dconf-editor that, com ? canonical ? indicator ? appmenu ? menu-mode = "global" Any hint/help would be appreciated! Thank you in advance

    I am curious about how global variables are handled by script engines. I am looking for a script engine that does not preserve the state of global variables upon invocation. Are there such engines out there? We are looking for a scripting language we can use under the script engine API for Java. When making multiple invocations of a script engine, top-level calls to eval() or evaluate() method preserves the state of global variables, meaning that consequent calls to eval() will use the global variables as they were left by the last invocation. Is there a script engine that does not preserve the state, or provides the ability to reset the state, so that global variables are at their initial state every time the script engine is invoked?

    I've tried looking in the ES6 draft myself, but I'm not sure where to look: Can someone tell me if this in ES6 necessarily refers to the global object? Will this object have same members as the global scope? If you could answer for ES5 that would be helpful as well. I know this in global scope refers to the global object in the browser and in most other ES environments, like Node. I just want to know if that's the defined behavior by the spec or if that's extended behavior that implementers have added (and if this behavior will continue in ES6 implementations). In addition, is the global object always the same thing as the global scope? Or are there distinctions? Update - Why I want to know: I am basically trying to figure out how to get the global object reliably in ES5 & 6. I can't rely on window because that's specific to the browser, nor can I rely on global because that's specific to environments like Node. I know this in Node can refer to module in module scope, but I think it still refers to global in global scope. I want a cross-environment ES5 & 6 compliant way to get the global object (if possible). It seems like in all the environments I know of this in global scope does that, but I want to know if it's part of the actual spec (and so reliable across any environment that I may not be familiar with). I also need to know if the global scope and the global object are the same thing by the spec. In other words will all variables in global scope be the same as globalobject.variable_name?

    Generally, I am bulding dynamic SQL statement that is executing using sp_executsql like this: EXEC sp_executesql @TempSQLStatement I need to insert the return result row set in something (table variable or temporary table), but I am getting the following error: Msg 208, Level 16, State 0, Line 1746 Invalid object name '#TempTable'. after executing this: INSERT INTO #TempTable EXEC sp_executesql @TempSQLStatement From what I have read, I believe the issue is caused because I am not specifying the columns of the temporary table, but I am not able to do this because the return columns count varies. I have read that I can use global temporary tables, but I have done this before and wonder is there an other way to do that.

  • PHP question about global variables and form requests

    Hi, This is probably a stupid question but will ask anyway sine I have no idea. I have written basic php code which serve forms. Say I have a login page and I serve it using the login.php page and it will be called in the login.html page like this - <form action="login.php" method="post"> By this it is also implied that every POST needs its own php file, doesn't it? This kind of feels weird. Is there a way to have a single file, say code.php, and just have each of the forms as functions instead? EDIT: Specifically, say I have 5 forms that are used one after the other in my application. Say after login the user does A, B, C and D tasks each of which are sent to the server as a POST request. So instead of having A.php, B.php, C.php and D.php I would like to have a single code.php and have A(), B(), C() and D() as functions. Is there a way to do this? Also on the same note, how do I deal with say a global array (e.g. an array of currently logged in users) across multiple forms? I want to do this without writing to a DB. I know its probably better to write to a DB and query but is it even possible to do it with a global array? The reason I was thinking about having all the form functions in one file is to use a global array. Thanks, - Pav

When i declare one object of class locally it retrieves the value properly.     It seems to be the general opinion that tables should not be used for layout in HTML. Why? I have never (or rarely to be honest) seen good arguments for this. The usual answers are: It's good to separate content from layoutBut this is a fallacious argument; Cliche Thinking. I guess it's true that using the table element for layout has little to do with tabular data. So what? Does my boss care? Do my users care?Perhaps me or my fellow developers who have to maintain a web page care... Is a table less maintainable? I think using a table is easier than using divs and CSS.By the way... why is using a div or a span good separation of content from layout and a table not? Getting a good layout with only divs often requires a lot of nested divs. Readability of the codeI think it's the other way around. Most people understand html, few understand CSS. It's better for SEO not to use tablesWhy? Can anybody show some evidence that it is? Or a statement from Google that tables are discouraged from an SEO perspective? Tables are slower.An extra tbody element has to be inserted. This is peanuts for modern web browsers. Show me some benchmarks where the use of a table significantly slows down a page. A layout overhaul is easier without tables, see css Zen Garden.Most web sites that need an upgrade need new content (html) as well. Scenarios where a new version of a web site only needs a new CSS file are not very likely. Zen Garden is a nice web site, but a bit theoretical. Not to mention its misuse of CSS. I am really interested in good arguments to use divs + CSS instead of tables.

  • In Oracle 10g, how do I see tables in schemes other than system

    In the hr schema there's a table emloyees, I can query data from it specifying it implicitly SELECT count(*) FROM hr.employees while logged in as system, but when I navigate to Home-Object Browser in the browser I can't see the table employees and other tables in other schemas. Can I manage tables in schemas other than system while logged in as system? Maybe there's some setting which enables me to group tables by schema. My Oracle Database version is 10.2.0.1 Express Edition. IIRC I could see all tables in Oracle Database 10.1.x.y. Thanks.

It needs to store a few GB of data and SQL Azure is too expensive for me, so I'll use Azure tables in the cloud version. Can you recommend a storage solution, which will run on standalone servers and have an API and behavior similar to Azure tables? From what I've seen Server AppFabric does not include Tables. TIA

  • Vertically Merge Multiple Tables in MySQL by Joint Primary Key

    Hello, I'll attempt to make my question as clear as possible. I'm fairly unexperienced with SQL, only know the really basic queries. In order to have a better idea I'd been reading the MySQL manual for the past few days, but I couldn't really find a concrete solution and my needs are quite specific. I've got 3 MySQL MyISAM tables: table1, table2 and table3. Each table has an ID column (ID, ID2, ID3 respectively), and different data columns. For example table1 has [ID, Name, Birthday, Status, ...] columns, table2 has [ID2, Country, Zip, ...], table3 has [ID3, Source, Phone, ...] you get the idea. The ID, ID2, ID3 columns are common to all three tables... if there's an ID value in table1 it will also appear in table2 and table3. The number of rows in these tables is identical, about 10m rows in each table. What I'd like to do is create a new table that contains (most of) the columns of all three tables and merge them into it. The dates, for instance, must be converted because right now they're in VARCHAR YYYYMMDD format. Reading the MySQL manual I figured STR_TO_DATE() would do the job, but I don't know how to write the query itself in the first place so I have no idea how to integrate the date conversion. So basically, after I create the new table (which I do know how to do), how can I merge the three tables into it, integrating into the query the date conversion?

  • Problems with image/file upload in MediaWiki on Windows 2008 Server R2, using wrong temp directory

    I have installed MediaWiki 1.15.2 under IIS as per the MediaWiki installation instructions for Windows 2008 Server. I have configured PHP to use a specific temp directory: upload_tmp_dir="C:\php\uploadtemp" I have specified that MediaWiki is allowed to upload: $wgEnableUploads = true; But when I try to upload an image, I get this error message in my browser: Internal error Could not find file "C:\Windows\Temp\php1AEA.tmp". Retrying will simply give me a new filename, but in the same location. The directory does not have any php* files in it, but since they're "temporary", they might be gone in a flash before Windows Explorer is able to show them so that might be a red herring. I've googled for this, and the most promising lead I found was on this page: Image upload problem - Is this bug fixed?, but since the text says "a bugfix was posted on the bug-report page", but provides no link to which bug page this relates to (php or mediawiki) nor the actual bug report, I've not found conclusively the bug report in question so that didn't help me much. Lots of pages indicates that this is a permission issue, so I tried setting permissions on c:\windows\temp as Modify by Everyone, still no dice. I tried changing the two system environment variables TEMP and TMP to point to C:\Temp instead, but MediaWiki still complains about not finding the file in C:\Windows\Temp. Note that I don't care a lot about where the files will actually be stored temporarily, so c:\windows\temp is fine by me. I do, however, care about them actually being uploaded correctly. Does anyone know of a fix, have any leads I can follow, or whatnot? The server is running Windows 2008 Server R2, all patches installed, and the PHP installed is 5.3.2, using IIS FastCGI.

    Hello, in the ressource-tag of my MainWindowView.xaml I have this markup: RenderOptions.EdgeMode="Aliased" to get a general sharp look of my whole application. Using mostly rectangular shapes/controls this works fine. But for my validation error symbols I use a red ellipse with a white cross or "X" in it. The ellipse is using now the global "Aliased" settings what looks not good because I can see the pixelated border of the ellipse. Using now does NOT change anything ??? I always set in wpf local settings override global settings ?

  • Using the Ninject NLogModule Logger in global.asax

    I'm using Ninject for DI in my asp.net application, so my Global class inherits from NinjectHttpApplication. In my CreateKernel(), I'm creating my custom modules and DI is working fine for me. However, I notice that there is a Logger property in the NinjectHttpApplication class, so I'm trying to use this in Application_Error whenever an exception is not caught. I think I'm creating the nlog module correctly for Ninject, but my logger is always null. Here's my CreateKernel: protected override Ninject.Core.IKernel CreateKernel() { IKernel kernel = new StandardKernel(new NLogModule(), new NinjectRepositoryModule()); return kernel; } But in the following method, Logger is always null. protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { Exception lastException = Server.GetLastError().GetBaseException(); Logger.Error(lastException, "An exception was caught in Global.asax"); } To clarify, Logger is a property on NinjectHttpApplication of type ILogger and has the [Inject] attribute Any idea how to inject correctly into Logger?

The precision of the SmallDateTime is one concept that confuses a lot of people, proven by the many messages I receive everyday relating to this subject. Let me start with the question: What is the precision of the SMALLDATETIME datatypes? What is your answer? Write it down on your notepad. Now if you do not want to continue reading the blog post, head to my previous blog post over here: SQL SERVER – Precision of SMALLDATETIME. A Social Media Question Since the increase of social media conversations, I noticed that the amount of the comments I receive on this blog is a bit staggering. I receive lots of questions on facebook, twitter or Google+. One of the very interesting questions yesterday was asked on Facebook by Raghavendra. I am re-organizing his script and asking all of the questions he has asked me. Let us see if we could help him with his question: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100),registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY registered DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Now when the above script is ran, we will get the following result: Well, the expectation of the query was to have the following result. The row which was inserted last was expected to return as first row in result set as the ORDER BY descending. Side note: Because the requirement is to get the latest data, we can’t use any  column other than smalldatetime column in order by. If we use name column in the order by, we will get an incorrect result as it can be any name. My Initial Reaction My initial reaction was as follows: 1) DataType DateTime2: If file precision of the column is expected from the column which store date and time, it should not be smalldatetime. The precision of the column smalldatetime is One Minute (Read Here) for finer precision use DateTime or DateTime2 data type. Here is the code which includes above suggestion: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100), registered datetime2) GO DECLARE @test datetime2 SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY registered DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO 2) Tie Breaker Identity: There are always possibilities that two rows were inserted at the same time. In that case, you may need a tie breaker. If you have an increasing identity column, you can use that as a tie breaker as well. CREATE TABLE #temp (ID INT IDENTITY(1,1), name VARCHAR(100),registered datetime2) GO DECLARE @test datetime2 SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY ID DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Those two were the quick suggestions I provided. It is not necessary that you should use both advices. It is possible that one can use only DATETIME datatype or Identity column can have datatype of BIGINT or have another tie breaker. An Alternate NO Solution In the facebook thread this was also discussed as one of the solutions: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100),registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO However, I believe it is not the solution and can be further misleading if used in a production server. Here is the example of why it is not a good solution: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO -- Before Index SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO -- Create Index ALTER TABLE #temp ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_#temp] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (name DESC) GO -- After Index SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Now let us examine the resultset. You will notice that an index which is created on the base table which is (indeed) schema change the table but can affect the resultset. As you can see, an index can change the resultset, so this method is not yet perfect to get the latest inserted resultset. No Schema Change Requirement After giving these two suggestions, I was waiting for the feedback of the asker. However, the requirement of the asker was there can’t be any schema change because the application was used by many other applications. I validated again, and of course, the requirement is no schema change at all. No addition of the column of change of datatypes of any other columns. There is no further help as well. This is indeed an interesting question. I personally can’t think of any solution which I could provide him given the requirement of no schema change. Can you think of any other solution to this? Need of Database Designer This question once again brings up another ancient question:  “Do we need a database designer?” I often come across databases which are facing major performance problems or have redundant data. Normalization is often ignored when a database is built fast under a very tight deadline. Often I come across a database which has table with unnecessary columns and performance problems. While working as Developer Lead in my earlier jobs, I have seen developers adding columns to tables without anybody’s consent and retrieving them as SELECT *.  There is a lot to discuss on this subject in detail, but for now, let’s discuss the question first. Do you have any suggestions for the above question?   • Setting a session variable in Global.asax causes AJAX errors

    I'm getting a very peculiar problem with my asp.net application, it took me an age to track down but I still don't know what is causing this behaviour. If I set a session variable in the Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute event, then my external JavaScript files are ignored, and therfore causing a raft of errors. I have simplified the problem below. E.g. I have file called JScript.js containing the code: function myAlert() { alert("Hi World"); } And in my Default.aspx file I reference the js with the code: <script src="JScript.js" type="text/javascript"></script> And in the body onload event I call the myAlert() function: <body onload="myAlert()"> And finally in the Global.asax file: Private Sub Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) HttpContext.Current.Session("myVar") = "MyValue" End Sub If you run the Default.aspx file you will see the js function isnt called, however, if you comment out the line of code Global.asax then the external js is called and the function executed when the page loads.   • Accessing HttpRequest from Global.asax via a page

    I'm trying to get a property (ImpersonatePersonId) from a page in global.asax but get a HttpException saying 'Request is not available in this context'. I've been searching for some documentation on where in the pipeline the request is accessible, but as far as I can see all Microsoft can produce of documentation is one-liners like "PostRequestHandlerExecute: Occurs when the ASP.NET event handler finishes execution." which really doesn't give me much... I've tried placing the call in both Pre and PostRequestHandlerExceute but with the same result. I wonder if anyone with experience in this would be so kind as to tell me where the Request object is available. My code from global asax is below. ICanImpersonate page = HttpContext.Current.Handler as ICanImpersonate; ImpersonatedUser impersonatePerson = page != null ? page.ImpersonatePersonId : null; Response.Filter = new TagRewriter(Response, new TagProcessor(Context, impersonatePerson).Process); What I want to do is rewrite some HTML based on some request parameters.

    Hello, As I understand it python has the following outermost namespaces: Builtin - This namespace is global across the entire interpreter and all scripts running within an interpreter instance. Globals - This namespace is global across a module, ie across a single file. I am looking for a namespace in between these two, where I can share a few variables declared within the main script to modules called by it. For example, script.py: import Log from Log import foo from foo log = Log() foo() foo.py: def foo(): log.Log('test') # I want this to refer to the callers log object I want to be able to call script.py multiple times and in each case, expose the module level log object to the foo method. Any ideas if this is possible? It won't be too painful to pass down the log object, but I am working with a large chunk of code that has been ported from Javascript. I also understand that this places constraints on the caller of foo to expose its log object. Thanks, Paul

    I know my gut reaction to global variables is "badd!" but in the two game development courses I've taken at my college globals were used extensively, and now in the DirectX 9 game programming tutorial I am using (www.directxtutorial.com) I'm being told globals are okay in game programming ...? The site also recommends using only structs if you can when doing game programming to help keep things simple. I'm really confused on this issue, and all the research I've been trying to do is very confusing. I realize there are issues when using global variables (threading issues, they make code harder to maintain, the state of them is hard to track etc) but also there is a cost associated with not using globals, I'd have to pass a loooot of information around very often which can be confusing and I imagine time-costing, although I guess pointers would speed the process up (this is my first time writing a game in C++.) Anyway, I realize there is probably no "right" or "wrong" answer here since both ways work, but I want my code to be as proper as I can so any input would be good, thank you very much!

  • global counter in application: bad practice?

    In my C++ application I sometimes create different output files for troubleshooting purposes. Each file is created at a different step of our pipelined operation and it's hard to know file came before which other one (file timestamps all show the same date). I'm thinking of adding a global counter in my application, and a function (with multithreading protection) which increments and returns that global counter. Then I can use that counter as part of the filenames I create. Is this considered bad practice? Many different modules need to create files and they're not necessarily connected to each other.

  • Cut in excel doesn't work, and copying tables from one program to another returns text

    My excel 2007 on Windows 7 operating system seems to have a probelm with regular cut function. when I highlight cells I want to cut and press cut (either on keyboard shortcut Ctrl+x, Home menu cut command, or from the right-click menu) cells start flashing for a split second and after that they only turn normal. When I want to paste them, they past as if copy function was used. If I try to rightclick to use function "insert cut cells" it is not one of the offered options at all. On my home computer I have same combination, Excel 2007 on windows 7 and it works just fine. COuld the problem be due to 64-bit win7 version at my job, and 32-bit version at home? Another problem is when I copy table from excel to word, in word pasting results in unformatted text instead of table as it was in excel. Did someone have such problems and can offer a solution? Thanx a lot.
