• Is there a simple, flat, XML-based query-able data storage solution? [closed]

  I have been in long pursuit of an XML-based query-able data store, and despite continued searches and evaluations, I have yet to find a solution that meets the my needs, which include: Data is wholly contained within XML nodes, in flat text files. There is a "native" - or at least unobtrusive - method with which to perform Create/Read/Update/Delete (CRUD) operations onto the "schema". I would consider access via http, XHR, javascript, PHP, BASH, or PERL to be unobtrusive, dependent on the complexity of the set of dependencies. Server-side file-system reads and writes. A client-side interface element, accessible in any browser without a plug-in. Some extra, preferred (but optional) requirements include: Respond to simple SQL, or similarly syntax queries. Serve the data on a bare bones https server, with no "extra stuff", either via XMLHTTPRequest, HTTP proper, or JSON. A few thoughts: What I'm looking for may be possible via some Java server implementations, but for the sake of this question, please do not suggest that - unless it meets ALL the requirements. Java, especially on the client-side is not really an option, nor is it appealing from a development viewpoint.* I know walking the filesystem is a stretch, and I've heard it's possible with XPATH or XSLT, but as far as I know, that's not ready for primetime, nor even yet a recommendation. However the ability to recursively traverse the filesystem is needed for such a system to be of useful facility. At this point, I have basically implemented what I described via, of all things, CGI and Bash, but there has to be an easier way. Thoughts?

  Is there some cool Moria like theme for Visual Studio 2010? Mine is highlighting gray font with gray background! I just can't configure it on Tools-Options-Environment-Fonts and Colors menu. Visual Studio doesn't seem to show an item for this "highlighting keyword/tag system". You select a variable on variable called myVar, and it highlights all with the same name but with a grayer color and gray background. I just can't read it and can't set it.

• Connecting Ubuntu home server to internet via laptop

  I recently got a spare desktop computer from a relative to play around with and since I've been using Ubuntu for a few years I decided to install Ubuntu Server 12.04 to play around with and learn more. However it doesn't have a wireless card, the wireless adapter had a shipping error and will be awhile, and plugging it into the router is not an option. So I figured I could give it access to the wifi from my laptop(which I switch between Windows and Ubuntu) so I could at least get some things started and set up while I'm waiting for the adapter. However the few guides I can find to do that require a GUI, something lacking on the server version. Could someone tell me how to set this up via the terminal? I would appreciate it.

• What's the difference between a "Release" Xbox 360 build and a "Debug" one?

  I've got a build of my game that works on Windows under a release and debug build as expected. When I deploy the debug version of the game to the Xbox, it works as expected and runs the same as on Windows - however when I deploy the release version to the XBOX I get different behaviour within the game. I'm using a 3rd party library for the collisions (which is where I am seeing differences between the release and debug versions of my game); so I can't see what's actually different but I suspect they have some compiler directive for Debug on the Xbox to the Release version on the Xbox. As such, I'm thinking that I may need to release my game with the Debug build instead of the Release build but I want to know what issues I can expect by doing so? Are there any significant performance issues between the two build profiles?

  So I thought my issue was relating to the difference between a Debug and a Release build as per this question: What's the difference between a "Release" Xbox 360 build and a "Debug" one? but I've since found that if I go ahead and build a Creators Club version of the game using a Debug build and deploy to the XBOX, I get the same experience I had with the Release version of my game. However if I run the game from Visual Studio using F5 and having set the XBOX as the default platform, then the game runs as expected. If I change from Debug to Release and run with CTRL+F5 then the game also works as expected. How would running the game with the debugger attached change the results I am getting in game? Is there any way that I can use the same approach or change the default compilation of the game so that I can use this approach to release my game?

• How to I do install DB2 ODBC?

  I have been trying, with no success, to install a IBM DB2 ODBC driver so that my PHP server can connect to a database. I've tried installing the db2_connect and get all sorts of problems, I tried install I Access for Linux and the RPM did not install right nor did using alien breed any useful results. I've also tried the DB2 Runtime v8.1, no success. If I attempt to run the rpm it claims I need dependencies that I can't find in apt-get. Yum is also not very helpful as it appears I don't have any repositories installed or lists... I'm not using the DB2 Express C thing, even if I did try it to get the db2 php functions to work. And I don't have zend but I think I have every other package on the ubuntu repositories. • nagios wrongly reports packet loss

  Lately, on my nagios 3.2.3 install (CentOS5, monitoring ~ 300 hosts, 1150 services) has sdtarted to occasionally report high packet loss on 50-60 hosts at a time. Problem is it's bogus. Manual runs of ping (or its own check_ping binary) finds no fault with any of the affected hosts. The only possible cures I found so far are: run all the checks manually (they will succeed but it may act up again on next check) acknowledge and wait for the problem to go away (may take several ours) I suspect (but have no particular reason other than single rescheduled checks succeeding) that the problem may lay with all the checks being mass scheduled together - in which case introducing some jitter in the scheduling (how?) might help. Or it may be something completely different. Ideas, anyone?

• Nagios: turn off service checks/display on down hosts

  I want to to tweak nagios in such a way that all checking stops (with services not displayed, or displayed as unknown) for any down node. Said differently I only want to see one alert for a down host instead of 1 (down) + n (1 for every service). Note that I am interested in service display/status, not only in turning off notifications. Rationale: we use the nagios firefox/chrome plugin to monitor status and nagios' behavior is too noisy giving readings like these (because every node has 20 services): 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 87 critical This means that the 7 critical services on up node (the problem is on the service) are swamped in a slab of red services which are critical only because they sit on a node that's down/unreachable. What I'd rather like to see is: 3 down, 1 unreachable, 80 unknown, 4 warnings, 7 critical Or even 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 7 critical I have looked in service dependencies but I did not fine a way to describe: "make all services on a alive-host dependen on the status of the host check". I found the problem discussed here, where one of the participants thought it was a nagios bug, and here where one of the participants thought it was "as designed". As things are, I am just interested in the effect, much less in the design philosophy. Note that this nagios is checking hundreds of nodes, so the maintainablilty of the solution is also important. • How to install Revolution R Enterprise?

  Revolution R Enterprise is available as a red-hat rpm file. Normally I would use alien to install an rpm file, but the instructions for installing this package have an install.py file that I am supposed to execute. When I ./install.py, I get the following instructions: rpm: please use alien to install rpm packages on Debian, if you are really sure use --force-debian switch. See README.Debian for more details. There is no README.Debian file in the directory, and although I am not proficient in python, I can tell that there are at least four different directories with *rpm files in them. Has anyone had success with this? If possible, I'd prefer to install the Enterprise version instead of community version in the Ubuntu repository so that I can test it out.

  I am preparing for my test tomorrow and this is one of the practice questions. I solved it partially but I am confused with the rest. Here is the problem: Consider a gray world with no ambient and specular lighting ( only diffuse lighting). The screen coordinates of a triangle P1,P2,P3, are P1=(100,100), P2= (300,150), P3 = (200, 200). The gray values at P!,P2,P3 are 1/2, 3/4, and 1/4 respectively. The light is at infinity and its direction and gray color are (1,1,1) and 1.0 respectively. The coefficients of diffused reflection is 1/2. The normals of P1,P2,P3 are N1= (0,0,1), N2 = (1,0,0), and N3 = (0,1,0) respectively. Consider the coordinates of three points P1,P2,P3 to be 0. Do not normalize the normals. I have computed that the illumination at the 3 vertices P1,P2,P3 is (1/4,3/8,1/8). Also I computed that interpolation coefficients of a point P inside the triangle whose coordinates are (220, 160) are given by (1/5,2/5,2/5). Now I have 4 more questions regarding this problem. 1) The illumination at P using Gouraud Shading is: i) 1/2 The answer is 1/2, but I have no idea how to compute it.. 2) The interpolated normal at P is given by i) (2/5, 2/5,1/5) ii) (1/2, 1/4, 1/4) iii) (3/5, 1/5, 1/5) 3) The interpolated color at P is given by: i) 1/2 Again, I know the correct answer but no idea how to solve it 4) The illumination at P using Phong Shading is i) 1/4 ii) 9/40 iii) 1/2

• Installing ImageMagick for C(++) on Ubuntu 12.10

  I'm having a hard time installing the ImageMagick software for Ubuntu 12.10. So, I want the C and C++ API, not much more. Now when I go to imagemagick.org, they have a binary package for unix, namely an rpm. When I download and launch it, RPM complains that firstly I should be using alien, and secondly there are like 10000 missing dependencies. If I use alien to create a deb file, and the install it via the software center, the package does indeed install, but only the command line interface - no includes, anything. Same with apt-get imagemagick. (BTW - wtf, they don't have support for ubuntu?) I tried compiling from source (which I shoudn't be doing anyway - I'm not expecting much customization am I?), and then the includes are present, but the programs won't compile complaining about "undefined reference" and then a list of everything that isn't pure C (and I'm using the command imagemagick.org told me to use, namely cc -o wand pkg-config --cflags --libs MagickWand wand.c) so clearly I'm doing something wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Changing a Sprite When Hit in GameMaker

  I am making a simple little Galaga style game. I want the objects sprite to change whenever it is hit. For example if a laser hits an alien then the sprite takes 1 out of 4 damage to its health points (HP). However I want the sprite to change from green to yellow after 1 hit, yellow to orange after 2 hits, orange to red after 3 hits, and red to pixel explosion after all 4 HPs are lost. That way you can easily distinguish the amount of health each alien has left. How can I do this? Preferably explain it in code.

• LSI MegaRAID Expected Chip Temperature?

  We recently built a replicating SAN array from 2x Dell R720XD's, we are using LSI 9270-8i MegaRAID cards with CacheCade 2.0, BBU and Write Back cache enabled. Our cards are showing HUGE chip temperatures (97*C+ with NO disk activity!). Our R720's are in auto temp management mode so the max exhaust temp is 50*C. The MegaRAID cards are passively cooled and depend on good airflow to cool them - however is 97*C normal? - I have seen reference to 60*C max ambients but nothing for chip temp.

• DNSCurve vs DNSSEC

  Can someone informed, please give a lengthy reply about the differences and advantages/disadvantages of both approaches? I am not a DNS expert, not a programmer. I have a decent basic understanding of DNS, and enough knowledge to understand how things like the kaminsky bug work. From what I understand, DNSCurve has stronger encryption, is far simpler to setup, and an altogether better solution. DNSSEC is needlessly complicated and uses breakable encryption, however it provides end to end security, something DNSCurve does not. However, many of the articles I have read have seemed to indicate that end to end security is of little use or makes no difference. So which is true? Which is the better solution, or what are the disadvantages/advantages of each? edit: I would appreciate if someone could explain what is gained by encrypting the message contents, when the goal is authentication rather than confidentiality. • Enabling syntax highlighting for LESS in Programmer's Notepad?

  When I don't feel like firing up the Visual Studio behemoth, or when I don't have it installed, I always turn to Programmer's Notepad. It's an amazingly light and fast little text editor, with the special advantage that it is completely platform-native and conforms to standard UI conventions. Therefore, please do not suggest that I consider using other text editors. I've already considered and rejected them because they do not use native UI controls. I like Programmer's Notepad, thank you very much. Unfortunately, I've recently begun to learn, use, and love LESS for all of my CSS coding needs, and it appears that Programmer's Notepad is not bundled with a syntax highlighting scheme for LESS. Does anyone know if there is—by chance and good fortune—one already available somewhere on the web that some kind soul has tediously prepared? If not, how can I go about writing one of my own? Is there a way to build on the existing CSS scheme? It's also possible that any code coloring scheme designed for Scintilla-based editors will work, as Programmer's Notepad is based on the Scintilla control. If you know of a LESS highlighting scheme for Scintilla-based editors, and how to use that with Programmer's Notepad, please suggest that as well.

• Is there a way to make software available for remote installation in Windows Server?

  I've heard of folks having a sort of "software repository" which contains a database of product keys and then network installation media for operating systems and other Microsoft software, such as Office. With this, they were then able to join a computer to the domain and grant that user privileges to a set of software and then the client was able to use it either remotely or locally on their machine. I believe it installed from the server on to their local machine. Does anyone happen to know what this is?
