• Create list in existing site collection from a feature

- by keysersoze
I have created a feature, a publishing site, in Visual Studio to MOSS - this feature contains a masterpage, some page-templates, some site columns (grouped to match each page-template) and som custom list templates etc. I have also created a site collection, some sites and pages based on my feature. Now I have upgraded the code in my feature - I wanted a ListInstance to be created based on my custom list template. When I have upgraded my SharePoint (using WSPBuilder), the ListInstance and default data are visible if I create a new site collection, but existing site collection does not get the ListInstance and data. Is there anything I can do to update existing site collections to contain the ListInstance when upgrading?

• Is CSS turing complete?

- by Adam Davis
CSS isn't, insofar as I know, Turing complete. But my knowledge of CSS is very limited. Is CSS Turing complete? Are any of the existing draft or committees considering language features that might enable Turing completeness if it isn't right now?

• How to use jaxp 3 with jdk 1.6?

- by Michal
I'm trying to migrate application from jdk 1.5 to jdk 1.6 without introducing any changes visible to the end user. Application's output is an xml generated using jaxp which is a part of the jdk libraries. Since jaxp versions are different in jdk 1.5 and 1.6, the resulting xml looks different in each version. An example: DatatypeFatory.newInstance().newDuration(60) produces 'PT2H17M0.000S' in jdk 1.5 and 'P0Y0M0DT2H17M0.000S' in jdk 1.6. Both are correct, but i want to avoid any visible changes. Classes like DatatypeFactory have a mechanism which allows specifying which implementation should be used, but it relies on specifying full qualified class name. So theoretically i could download jaxp jars with the same version which is used in jdk 1.5 and let the application use them. Unfortunately the package and class names are the same in both versions, so i would have to somehow tell java to load classes from jar and not jdk. I was trying to put jaxp jars at the beginning of the classpath, but it didn't help. Is it possible to tell java to load classes from external jar and not jdk libraries? Can i solve this problem in any other way? Thanks in advance

• Removal of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge from Java SE 8 JDK

- by user12629431
Starting with Java SE 8, the JDBC-ODBC Bridge will no longer be included with the JDK. The JDBC-ODBC Bridge has always been considered transitional and a non-supported product[1] that was only provided with select JDK bundles and not included with the JRE. The JDBC-ODBC bridge provides limited support for JDBC 2.0 and does not support more recent versions of the JDBC specification. I would recommend that you use a JDBC driver provided by the vendor of your database or a commercial JDBC Driver instead of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge. • Practical non-Turing-complete languages?

- by Kyle Cronin
Nearly all programming languages used are Turing Complete, and while this affords the language to represent any computable algorithm, it also comes with its own set of problems. Seeing as all the algorithms I write are intended to halt, I would like to be able to represent them in a language that guarantees they will halt. Regular expressions used for matching strings and finite state machines are used when lexing, but I'm wondering if there's a more general, broadly language that's not Turing complete? edit: I should clarify, by 'general purpose' I don't necessarily want to be able to write all halting algorithms in the language (I don't think that such a language would exist) but I suspect that there are common threads in halting proofs that can be generalized to produce a language in which all algorithms are guaranteed to halt. There's also another way to tackle this problem - eliminate the need for theoretically infinite memory. Once you limit the amount of memory the machine is allowed, the number of states the machine is in is finite and countable, and therefore you can determine if the algorithm will halt (by not allowing the machine to move into a state it's been in before).

• Need to have an aspx page with a Feature in SharePoint 2010

- by camit90
I have added a custom button to the server ribbon in SharePoint (I have used a feature with Farm scope, so that the button is visible throughout the various site collections). For the elements of the feature, I have added a CustomUIExtension through which I want to load an aspx page on the click of the button. <CommandUIHandler Command="Test_Button" CommandAction="javascript: function demoCallback(dialogResult, returnValue) { SP.UI.Notify.addNotification('Operation Successful!'); SP.UI.ModalDialog.RefreshPage(SP.UI.DialogResult.OK); } var options = { url: '/_layouts/CustomPage.aspx', tite: 'Custom Page', dialogReturnValueCallback: demoCallback }; SP.UI.ModalDialog.showModalDialog(options);" /> I have added the CustomPage.aspx and its corresponding code behind class to the 14 hive (inside 14/TEMPLATE/LAYOUTS). However when I install the feature and click the button, I get an error saying "Cannot load CustomPage". I understand that I haven't deployed the assembly, but shouldn't the aspx page be compiled Just In Time?

• Oracle Announces Release of PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2

- by Jay Zuckert
Big things sometimes come in small packages. Today Oracle announced the availability of PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2 which delivers a new HR self service user experience that fundamentally changes the way managers and employees interact with the HCM system. Earlier this year we reviewed a number of new concept designs with our Customer Advisory Boards. With the accelerated feature pack development cycle we have adopted, these innovations are now available to all 9.1 customers without the need for an upgrade. There are no new products that need to be licensed for the capabilities below. For more details on Feature Pack 2, please see the Oracle press release. Included in Feature Pack 2 is a new search-based menu-free navigation that allows managers to search for employees by name and take actions directly from the secure search results. For example, a manager can now simply type in part of an employee’s first or last name and receive meaningful results from documents related to performance, compensation, learning, recruiting, career planning and more. Delivered actions can be initiated directly from these search results and the actions are securely tied to HCM security and user role. The feature pack also includes new pages that will enable managers to be more productive by aggregating key employee data into a single page. The new Manager Dashboard and Talent Summary provide a consolidated view of data related to a manager’s team and individual team members, respectively. The Manager Dashboard displays information relevant to their direct reports including team learning, objective alignment, alerts, and pending approvals requiring their attention. The Talent Summary provides managers with an aggregated view of talent management-related data for an individual employee including performance history, salary history, succession options, total rewards, and competencies. The information displayed in both the Manager Dashboard and Talent Summary is configurable by system administrators and can be personalized by each of your managers. Other Feature Pack 2 enhancements allow organizations to administer Matrix or Dotted-Line Relationship Management, which addresses the challenge of tracking and maintaining project-based organizations that cut across the enterprise and geographic regions. From within the Company Directory and Org Viewer organization charts, managers now have access to manager self-service transactions from related actions. More than 70 manager and employee self-service transactions have been tied into the related action framework accessible from Org Viewer, Manager Dashboard, Talent Summary and Secure Enterprise Search (SES) results. In addition to making it easier to access manager self-service transactions, the feature pack delivers streamlined transaction pages making everyday tasks such as promoting an employee faster and more efficient. With the delivery of PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack 2, Oracle continues to deliver on its commitment to our PeopleSoft customers. With this feature pack, HCM 9.1 customers will be able to deploy the newest functionality quickly, without a major release upgrade, and realize added value from their existing PeopleSoft investment. For customers newly deploying 9.1, a new download with all of Feature Pack 2 will be available early next year. This will aslo include recertified upgrade paths from 8.8, 8.9 and 9.0, for customers in the upgrade process.

• Finish feature reverted commits from develop

- by marco-fiset
I am using git as a version control system, and using git-flow as the branching model. I started a feature branch some weeks ago in order to maintain the system in a clean state while developping that feature. The main development continued on the develop branch, and changes from develop were merged periodically into the feature, to keep it up to date as much as possible. However came the time where the feature was finished, and I used git-flow's finish feature to merge the feature back into develop. The merge was successfully done, but then I found out that some of the commits I made in develop were reverted by the merge commit! Nowhere in develop or in the feature branch were these changes reverted, I can't see any commit that overwrote them. I just can't find anything. The only theory I have for the moment is that git is failing on me, but that would be extremely unlikely. Maybe I did some kind of wrong manipulation that made this situation come true? I can trace back in the history when the commit was made. I can see that the changes from that commit were reverted by the merge commit. Nowhere in the branch I see a commit that reverts those changes. Yet they were reverted. How is this even possible?

• Flash AS3: (VideoEvent.COMPLETE, completePlay) - listener is triggered before video is completed

- by Tevi
Hello, I have a flash video using the standard FLV Playback component that comes with Flash. I'm using ActionScript 3 to modify the appearance and set up an event listener. I've set it up to go to a new URL using "externalInterface" when the video completes play. The URL is set in a variable using SWFObject. On only a few instances (3 people out of 50 - tested using Amazon Turk), people reported being taken directly to the new url, before the video even started playing. It's difficult to repeat the issue, but it did happen to me once. It doesn't have anything to do with cache, since it has been reported on people going to the url for the first time. Here's the url to the video: http://www.partstown.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Reedy-PartsTown-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewStaticPage-UnFramed?page=tourthetown Here's the code: import flash.external.*; import fl.video.*; var myVideo:FLVPlayback = new FLVPlayback(); var theUrl:String = this.loaderInfo.parameters.urlName; var theScript:String = this.loaderInfo.parameters.scriptName; myVideo.source = this.loaderInfo.parameters.videoPath;//"partstown.flv"; myVideo.skin = this.loaderInfo.parameters.skinPath;//"SkinUnderPlayStopSeekMuteVol.swf" myVideo.skinBackgroundColor = 0xAEBEFB; myVideo.skinBackgroundAlpha = 0.5; myVideo.width = 939; myVideo.height = 660; myVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, completePlay); function completePlay(e:VideoEvent):void { myVideo.alpha=0.2; ExternalInterface.call(theScript); } addChild(myVideo); Why would the listener be triggered before the event complete? How can I fix it? Thanks!

• The subsets-sum problem and the solvability of NP-complete problems

- by G.E.M.
I was reading about the subset-sums problem when I came up with what appears to be a general-purpose algorithm for solving it: (defun subset-contains-sum (set sum) (let ((subsets) (new-subset) (new-sum)) (dolist (element set) (dolist (subset-sum subsets) (setf new-subset (cons element (car subset-sum))) (setf new-sum (+ element (cdr subset-sum))) (if (= new-sum sum) (return-from subset-contains-sum new-subset)) (setf subsets (cons (cons new-subset new-sum) subsets))) (setf subsets (cons (cons element element) subsets))))) "set" is a list not containing duplicates and "sum" is the sum to search subsets for. "subsets" is a list of cons cells where the "car" is a subset list and the "cdr" is the sum of that subset. New subsets are created from old ones in O(1) time by just cons'ing the element to the front. I am not sure what the runtime complexity of it is, but appears that with each element "sum" grows by, the size of "subsets" doubles, plus one, so it appears to me to at least be quadratic. I am posting this because my impression before was that NP-complete problems tend to be intractable and that the best one can usually hope for is a heuristic, but this appears to be a general-purpose solution that will, assuming you have the CPU cycles, always give you the correct answer. How many other NP-complete problems can be solved like this one?

• Code Complete 2ed, composition and delegation.

- by Arlukin
Hi there. After a couple of weeks reading on this forum I thought it was time for me to do my first post. I'm currently rereading Code Complete. I think it's 15 years since the last time, and I find that I still can't write code ;-) Anyway on page 138 in Code Complete you find this coding horror example. (I have removed some of the code) class Emplyee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; ... bool IsZipCodeValid( Address address); ... private: ... } What Steve thinks is bad is that the functions are loosely related. Or has he writes "There's no logical connection between employees and routines that check ZIP codes, phone numbers or job classifications" Ok I totally agree with him. Maybe something like the below example is better. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid() const; ... } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; ... } class Employee { public: Address GetAddress() const; ... } When checking if the zip is valid you would need to do something like this. employee.GetAddress().GetZipCode().IsValid(); And that is not good regarding to the Law of Demeter ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Demeter][1]). So if you like to remove two of the three dots, you need to use delegation and a couple of wrapper functions like this. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid(); } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetZipCode()->IsValid()); } class Employee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetAddress()->IsZipCodeValid()); PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; } employee.IsZipCodeValid(); But then again you have routines that has no logical connection. I personally think that all three examples in this post are bad. Is it some other way that I haven't thougt about? //Daniel

• Turing-Complete language possibilities?

- by I can't tell you my name.
In every Turing-Complete language, is it possible to create a working Compiler for itself which first runs on an interpreter written in some other language and then compiles it's own source code? (Bootstrapping) Standards-Compilant C++ compiler which outputs binaries for, e.g.: Windows? Regex Parser and Evaluater? World of Warcraft clone? (Assuming the language gets the necessary API bindings as, for example, OpenGL and the WoW source code is available) (Everything here theoretical) Let's take Brainf*ck as an example language.

• Is the board game "Go" NP complete?

- by sharkin
There are plenty of Chess AI's around, and evidently some are good enough to beat some of the world's greatest players. I've heard that many attempts have been made to write successful AI's for the board game Go, but so far nothing has been conceived beyond average amateur level. Could it be that the task of mathematically calculating the optimal move at any given time in Go is an NP-complete problem?

• Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

- by Henrik Stahl
A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user. More details on the security settings can be found in the documentation. See below for a sample screenshot. The new update of the JRE and the JDK are available via OTN. To learn more about the release please visit the release notes.

• "sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz " error when trying to install Oracle Java

- by Fawkes5
i recently tried installed java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and i think i screwed something up I followed the instructions given here. First you need to remove openjdk for this run the following command from your terminal sudo apt-get purge openjdk* Now you can install Java7 by adding the following repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer Now everytime i install a new program i get the following error: Download done. sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed. dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Setting up python-central (0.6.17ubuntu1) ... Setting up python-eggtrayicon (2.25.3-11) ... Setting up gmail-notify (1.6.1.1-1ubuntu1) ... Processing triggers for python-central ... Errors were encountered while processing: oracle-java7-installer Error in function: However. The program seems to install and work just fine so it doesn't seem to be a problem preventing me from doing anything So then i reinstalled openjdk by going: sudo apt-get install openjdk* But i still get the same error. going: sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer gives me the same error. What is going on? Please let me know if this is clear or not and ill try to explain my issue better

• Using Feature to apply themes in SharePoint 2013 Preview

- by panjkov
In my previous post I wrote about applying custom theme to SharePoint 2013 site using new theming engine. I also mentioned that one approach for implementing this functionality could be to encapsulate this code in Feature receiver. In this post, I will demonstrate and explain this approach for applying custom theme to SPWeb. Our custom theming Feature will On Feature Activated create and apply new theme to the existing web, while preserving information about current theme On Feature Deactivating...(read more)

• Is this paragraph in Code Complete 2 backwards, or am I misunderstanding it?

- by user828584
In chapter 13, when talking about pointers, there is a paragraph: Sometimes, however, you would like to have the semantics of pass by reference—that is, that the passed object should not be altered—with the implementation of pass by value—that is, passing the actual object rather than a copy. It seems like the author made a mistake and mixed the two up. Is this true, or am I not understanding what he's saying correctly?

• SharePoint Feature suggestion

- by barathan
I have written a feature(Site scoped) that adds custom menu items to the New Menu and EditControlBlock of document library. These menu items should show up only when the user has add and edit permissions for that document library. If he selected the menu, url is redirected to my webpart. Webpart is deployed in site collection. To do this i have two way. I mentioned in as case 1 & case 2. But in the both cases i failed to fulfill my requirement Below are the sample entries in Feature and Element manifest file I am passing the current location to sourceurl in order to get the folder url <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Feature Id="59bba8e7-0cfc-46e3-9285-4597f8085e76" Title="My Custom Menus" Scope="Site" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/"> <ElementManifests> <ElementManifest Location="Elements.xml" /> </ElementManifests></Feature> Case 1: <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/"> <CustomAction Id="EditMenu1" RegistrationType="FileType" RegistrationId="txt" Location="EditControlBlock" Sequence="106" ImageUrl="/_layouts/images/PPT16.GIF" Title="My Edit Menu" Rights="AddListItems,EditListItems"> <UrlAction Url="javascript:var surl='{SiteUrl}'; window.location='/test/mypage.aspx?siteurl='+surl+'&itemurl={ItemUrl}&itemid={ItemId}&listid={ListId}&Source='+window.location" /> </CustomAction> <CustomAction Id="NewMenu1" GroupId="NewMenu" RegistrationType="List" RegistrationId="101" Location="Microsoft.SharePoint.StandardMenu" Sequence="1002" ImageUrl ="/_layouts/images/DOC32.GIF" Title="My New Menu" Rights="AddListItems,EditListItems"> <UrlAction Url="javascript:var surl='{SiteUrl}'; window.location='/test/mypage.aspx?siteurl='+surl+'&listid={ListId}&Source='+window.location" /> </CustomAction> </Elements> If i use the above code, it was not redirected to site collection instead of it is redirecting to rootsite. Is there is any way to get the site collection variable. To overcome this issue i used the following code: Case 2: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/"> <CustomAction Id="EditMenu1" RegistrationType="FileType" RegistrationId="txt" Location="EditControlBlock" Sequence="106" ImageUrl="/_layouts/images/PPT16.GIF" Title="My Edit Menu" Rights="AddListItems,EditListItems"> <UrlAction Url="~sitecollection/test/mypage.aspx?siteurl={SiteUrl}&itemurl={ItemUrl}&itemid={ItemId}&listid={ListId}&Source=/" /> </CustomAction> <CustomAction Id="NewMenu1" GroupId="NewMenu" RegistrationType="List" RegistrationId="101" Location="Microsoft.SharePoint.StandardMenu" Sequence="1002" ImageUrl ="/_layouts/images/DOC32.GIF" Title="My New Menu" Rights="AddListItems,EditListItems"> <UrlAction Url="~sitecollection/test/mypage.aspx?siteurl={SiteUrl}&listid={ListId}&Source=/" /> </CustomAction> </Elements> But in this case, it is correctly redirected to the site collection. But it fails to get the folder url because current location can't pass through in this case. while creating new document. Could you please suggest me either how to get the site collection url in the case 1 or how to pass the current location to the sourceul in case 2
