  • How do I use JDK 7 on Mac OSX?

    OK. This is a newbie question but I can't figure it out... I would like to use the WatchService API as mentioned in this link: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/io/notification.html After reading around, I found out that WatchService is part of the NIO class which is scheduled for JDK 7. So, it is in beta form. It's fine. http://jdk7.java.net/download.html has the JDK which I downloaded and extracted. I got a bunch of folders. I don't know what to do with them. Then, I read around some more and found that some nice group of people created JDK 7 as a binary so someone like me can install it easily. It is called Open JDK: http://code.google.com/p/openjdk-osx-build/ So, I downloaded the .dmg file and instal it. Then I open "Java Preference" and see that OpenJDK7 is available. So, now I feel that I can start trying out WatchService API. From the tutorial in the first link, the author gave a .java file to test it out first and make sure that it is running. Here is the link to the file: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/io/examples/WatchDir.java So, I boot up Eclipse (actually I use STS) and create a new Java project and choose JaveSE-1.7 in the "use an execution environment JRE:". Under the src folder, I copy pasted the WatchDir.java file. And I still see tons of squiggly red lines. All the "import.java.nio.*" are all red and I cannot run it as a Java app. If you read this far, thanks a lot. So, now... What do I need to do? Thanks. EDIT: I actually did not pursue using Java 7 but there are a lot of interest in it and it seems like people keep answering this question. What should I do to make it more relevant to people who search for it? Let me know by PMing me. Thanks.

  • Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

    I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour? I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-25 kernel on a HP dv5-1178er Pavilion laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo).   • ct.sym steals the ASM class

    Some mild consternation on the Twittersphere yesterday. Marcus Lagergren not being able to find the ASM classes in JDK 8 in NetBeans IDE: And there's no such problem in Eclipse (and apparently in IntelliJ IDEA). Help, does NetBeans (despite being incredibly awesome) suck, after all? The truth of the matter is that there's something called "ct.sym" in the JDK. When javac is compiling code, it doesn't link against rt.jar. Instead, it uses a special symbol file lib/ct.sym with class stubs. Internal JDK classes are not put in that symbol file, since those are internal classes. You shouldn't want to use them, at all. However, what if you're Marcus Lagergren who DOES need these classes? I.e., he's working on the internal JDK classes and hence needs to have access to them. Fair enough that the general Java population can't access those classes, since they're internal implementation classes that could be changed anytime and one wouldn't want all unknown clients of those classes to start breaking once changes are made to the implementation, i.e., this is the rt.jar's internal class protection mechanism. But, again, we're now Marcus Lagergen and not the general Java population. For the solution, read Jan Lahoda, NetBeans Java Editor guru, here: https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=186120 In particular, take note of this: AFAIK, the ct.sym is new in JDK6. It contains stubs for all classes that existed in JDK5 (for compatibility with existing programs that would use private JDK classes), but does not contain implementation classes that were introduced in JDK6 (only API classes). This is to prevent application developers to accidentally use JDK's private classes (as such applications would be unportable and may not run on future versions of JDK). Note that this is not really a NB thing - this is the behavior of javac from the JDK. I do not know about any way to disable this except deleting ct.sym or the option mentioned above. Regarding loading the classes: JVM uses two classpath's: classpath and bootclasspath. rt.jar is on the bootclasspath and has precedence over anything on the "custom" classpath, which is used by the application. The usual way to override classes on bootclasspath is to start the JVM with "-Xbootclasspath/p:" option, which prepends the given jars (and presumably also directories) to bootclasspath. Hence, let's take the first option, the simpler one, and simply delete the "ct.sym" file. Again, only because we need to work with those internal classes as developers of the JDK, not because we want to hack our way around "ct.sym", which would mean you'd not have portable code at the end of the day. Go to the JDK 8 lib folder and you'll find the file: Delete it. Start NetBeans IDE again, either on JDK 7 or JDK 8, doesn't make a difference for these purposes, create a new Java application (or use an existing one), make sure you have set the JDK above as the JDK of the application, and hey presto: The above obviously assumes you have a build of JDK 8 that actually includes the ASM package. And below you can see that not only are the classes found but my build succeeded, even though I'm using internal JDK classes. The yellow markings in the sidebar mean that the classes are imported but not used in the code, where normally, if I hadn't removed "ct.sym", I would have seen red error marking instead, and the code wouldn't have compiled. Note: I've tried setting "-XDignore.symbol.file" in "netbeans.conf" and in other places, but so far haven't got that to work. Simply deleting the "ct.sym" file (or back it up somewhere and put it back when needed) is quite clearly the most straightforward solution. Ultimately, if you want to be able to use those internal classes while still having portable code, do you know what you need to do? You need to create a JDK bug report stating that you need an internal class to be added to "ct.sym". Probably you'll get a motivation back stating WHY that internal class isn't supposed to be used externally. There must be a reason why those classes aren't available for external usage, otherwise they would have been added to "ct.sym". So, now the only remaining question is why the Eclipse compiler doesn't hide the internal JDK classes. Apparently the Eclipse compiler ignores the "ct.sym" file. In other words, at the end of the day, far from being a bug in NetBeans... we have now found a (pretty enormous, I reckon) bug in Eclipse. The Eclipse compiler does not protect you from using internal JDK classes and the code that you create in Eclipse may not work with future releases of the JDK, since the JDK team is simply going to be changing those classes that are not found in the "ct.sym" file while assuming (correctly, thanks to the presence of "ct.sym" mechanism) that no code in the world, other than JDK code, is tied to those classes.

The Auto-Complete feature can save you time if you compose a lot of emails and have a lot of contacts in your address book. However, you do have to be careful when using the feature, so you don’t accidentally select the wrong email address and send an email to the wrong person. If you find the feature irritating and don’t want to use it, you can easily disable it. To disable the Auto-Complete feature, open Outlook and click the FILE tab.

    I've just tried to create the smallest possible language interpreter. Would you like to join and try? Rules of the game: You should specify a programming language you're interpreting. If it's a language you invented, it should come with a list of commands in the comments. Your code should start with example program and data assigned to your code and data variables. Your code should end with output of your result. It's preferable that there are debug statements at every intermediate step. Your code should be runnable as written. You can assume that data are 0 and 1s (int, string or boolean, your choice) and output is a single bit. The language should be Turing-complete in the sense that for any algorithm written on a standard model, such as Turing machine, Markov chains, or similar of your choice, it's reasonably obvious (or explained) how to write a program that after being executred by your interpreter performs the algorithm. The length of the code is defined as the length of the code after removal of input part, output part, debug statements and non-necessary whitespaces. Please add the resulting code and its length to the post. You can't use functions that make compiler execute code for you, such as eval(), exec() or similar. The rub: I can't get Tomcat 5.5 to start as a windows service on 64-bit windows using a 32-bit JDK. the details: I've been running Tomcat 5.5 on Windows Server 2008 (x64) as a service for some time using a 64-bit JDK. I'm being forced to install a 32-bit JDK on this 64-bit machine so I can make use of the Java JAI libraries (no 64-bit JAI version). I have to run Tomcat using this 32-bit JDK. I can run Tomcat using the 32-bit JDK if I start it using /bin/startup.bat Problem is, it will not start as a windows service. I'm using the Tomcat bundled procrun executables. Has anyone had success starting Tomcat as a service using a 32-bit JDK on a 64-bit machine? Thanks for your expertise.

    I could swear that just a couple of months ago I downloaded a copy of the Java 1.5 SE JDK and I did not have to give them information on my first born. Today, I had to go through the register-and-we-will-send-you-a-link-someday dance. I have not received the link yet, so I thought I would ask about it here. What is special about the Java 5 JDK? I can get 6 just by clicking, is this a stick to get us to migrate to Java 6? Am I just not remembering doing this before? What marketing genius thought this would be a value add for Java? "If we make them sweat for the JDK they won't just delete it willy-nilly the next time?" Does everyone picture the people designing systems like this as mustache twirling Snidely Whiplash clones like I do? Did I just miss the link for the Secret Squirrel route to the download page? Finally, I am in the U.S. so I should not have to worry about export restrictions. Any thoughts?

    i encounter a very strange problem,and here is the detail: i'm going to uninstall the jdk 1.7.0.but when i use the rpm to check the appropriate name of the package,it prompt nothing.Anyway,when i use the command java -version,it will prompt the detail of the jdk 1.7.0. below is the detail: root@kaiwiiho:/usr/java# rpm -qa|grep jdk root@kaiwiiho:/usr/java# java -version java version "1.7.0" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-b147) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 21.0-b17, mixed mode) root@kaiwiiho:/usr/java# rpm -qa|grep jdk root@kaiwiiho:/usr/java# so what happen?And how can i uninstall it?thx

  • Removing all traces of GNU java and openjdk and replacing with Sun JDK

    I have installed latest Sun JDk. But when I do: java -version I still got OpenJDK version. So I completely removed OpenJDK. But now when I do: java -version I get even older GNU java 1.5 something libgcj. So I completely removed that too but it was asking to remove bunch of dependent apps like OpenOffice.org Writer etc. Even though I need the writer, I let it go because I do not want ever to see the face of any GNU java on my linux. So everything related to GNU java is removed. Luckily I am able to start Eclipse and it works fine and start normally (apparently using the installed Sun JDK which is what I want). But now when I run java -version I get bash: /usr/bin/java: No such file or directory Now what I need to do so that when I open any terminal window and enter java -version I should get Sun JDK version? Sun JDK is installed in /usr/java/jdk1.6.021. I also have symlinks: /usr/java/latest and /usr/java/defaults pointing to sun jdk.

  • Eclipse - no Java (JRE) / (JDK) ... no virtual machine...

    I am trying to get Eclipse Galileo to re-run on my computer - i have run it before with no problems but now i keep getting this error: A java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: C:\eclipse\jre\javaw.exe javaw.exe in your current PATH I've just done a fresh install of both the JDK and the SDK I have Windows 7 (x64) what's up with this? / how do i fix it-? UPDATE- i can't run any of the ipconfig / tracert / ping

    I saw this ECLiPSe solution to the problem mentioned in this XKCD comic. I tried to convert this to pure Prolog. go:- Total = 1505, Prices = [215, 275, 335, 355, 420, 580], length(Prices, N), length(Amounts, N), totalCost(Prices, Amounts, 0, Total), writeln(Total). totalCost([], [], TotalSoFar, TotalSoFar). totalCost([P|Prices], [A|Amounts], TotalSoFar, EndTotal):- between(0, 10, A), Cost is P*A, TotalSoFar1 is TotalSoFar + Cost, totalCost(Prices, Amounts, TotalSoFar1, EndTotal). I don't think that this is the best / most declarative solution that one can come up with. Does anyone have any suggestions for improvement? Thanks in advance!

    I am a Software Engineer and over the past few years I have become the de-facto software project manager simply because there isn't one. So to keep our sanity in the R&D/Engineering department, customers have become accustomed to coming to me with their requests. I have no experience in this realm so it is my first time acting as a project manager for software projects. I have managed other things but not software. So, how do you manage software projects and mark priorities? Requests come in at infrequent intervals so we very well could be working on something for someone else and then another person comes in with a "rush" job that needs working on. Is it easier to just say First Come, First Serve or is it the person with the most money?

  • .jar why it works only with specigic jdk version???

    Hi friends, I have website source code...in which there is a adito.jar file first i extract it ...then make again jar using "jar -cvf adito.jar . and the changed jar file work fine again with that website. above process is only work when i use jdk1.6.0_14 only... BUT..... if i use jdk1.5 or letest jdk1.6.0_18 the same thing is not work..i mean that jar file will not run in my website... So what is the possible reason of this..as i am new kid in java... thanking you, sadiq.
