  • Connecting both WAN and LAN ports to the same hub

    For some reason I wish to connect the WAN port and the LAN port on a router to the same hub and make the hub is connected to both networks, the Internet and a private network. Below is a diagram of the network configuration I'd like to build. I tried this and it didn't work as expected. PC 1 has no problem, but PC 2 cannot connect to the Internet. When I ping 192.168.0.1 from PC 2, all packets are lost. It works well when PC 2 is connected directly to the router. What's the problem with the network configuration above?

  • Removing (Presumably) Extraneous Network Adapters from Device Manager (eg WAN Miniport)

    Can anyone shed some light on the default items in the Network Adapters branch of the Windows Device Manager? In addition to the network card, there are always a bunch of other things that I cannot find any useful information on such as RAS Asynch Adapter and all the WAN Miniports (IKEv2, IP(v6), L2TP, Network Monitor, PPPOE, PPTP, SSTP). I would like to trim it down and uninstall whatever possible but cannot find out exactly what these items are responsible for (and therefore whether or not they are needed on my system). Most of the pages found with Google are either people trying to fix an error with such an item or someone asking what it is and being given an unhelpful, pat response like “just leave them alone” or “they’re necessary”. I highly doubt that is the case and I’m certain that at least some items can be removed because even if they become necessary in the future they can be added again (for example installing Network Monitor or Protowall reinstalls the miniport drivers anyway).

  • Route an IP from WAN to a host on LAN on OpenWRT

    EDIT: I know how to use NAT, I specifically want the server to be reachable on two IP's, one private, one public, with the firewall of the OpenWRT in between, if feasible. At the office we have recieved a /29 from our ISP. The first address is reserved for their endpoint, so I'm free to use five addresses. We run a local network, so of course there is a router in between running OpenWRT to provide all hosts with (W)LAN (dhcp from a private range). However, we also have a server running OS X Server 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and I'd like that server to be accessible both from the LAN using a private IP as well as from the WAN on it's own public IP. Point of note is that the server only has one network port, so multiple NICs is not an option, unfortunately. How would I go about doing this?

  • Cannot assign port 4 to WAN on TP-Link WR740N by DD-WRT wiki

    I'm following the DD-WRT instruction to get TP-Link WR740N v3's Port 4 on a different VLAN, but this doesn't happen. First, I have no "Setup VLANs" settinngs tab in DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/20/12) std r19519. I can get Internet on Wi-Fi if assigning eth1 to "WAN Port", but then all Ethernet ports get on the same VLAN and any wired connection grabs the DHCP address and Internet connection from router. When following the "old" instruction, if I run, say, nvram set vlan2ports="2 5*", should there appear a new interface, vlan2, in ifconfig, after ifconfig vlan2 up? It doesn't - does it mean there is no support for different VLANs in my software/hardware? What am I missing? Is it impossible to create more VLANs on TP-Link740?

  • Looking for a router with multiple WAN ports and load balancing

    I'm going to be moving in a few months. The location I'm moving to is great except it's on a road with very few people, so the internet access option is limited to DSL at 1.6Mbps down, 384kbps up. This is much slower than I'm used to. One option is to get at least two of the DSL lines. There's also good possibility that I'll be able to get WiMax or similar. I've been looking around a bit and it seems like what I need is a load balancing router with multiple WAN ports. Can anyone recommend some good ones? I could also go with a small power efficient Linux box with multiple NICs. What would be good software for that? It'd need to be able to handle around 10Mbps. Thanks for any help

  • VM clients can not access WAN

    I have a new VM host on my network, on a Dell R620. The dedicated iDrac is connected with static IP of: 192.168.3.x NIC #1 is connected to my router The eSXI 5.1 host is with IP of 192.168.3.250 The vSphere appliance has a static IP of 192.168.3.241 All the clients on the new host are in the same network 192.168.3.x All clients are Windows 2008 R2 My problem is that non of the clients can access the WAN. I can't ping anything which is beyond my router. I CAN ping anything within my router, even if it's on a different subnet - 192.168.0.x (Router rules are in tact and working) I can ping the gateway (192.168.3.254) One thing that I checked, and is bothering my (but don't know if it has any relevance) is that on the Host Networking properties, there is a vmnic0 (picture) that shows as if it only recognizes 192.168.0.x network - is that so? The command: route print shows me the following details, where I have a duplicate entry for 0.0.0.0 (and one is wrong) - which is probably also why it's not working

For example if I have 5 VPNs set for ISP1 (WAN1) and the balancer sends the request trough WAN2 it can't use any of the configured VPNs because the public IP is different. How do I deal with this problem?

    Hi Iam looking for the best way to ensure my server ( application ) remains available for all my users (on web/LAN/WAN ), when my primary ISP link fails. My server is behind a firewall on which both my primary & secondary links land. I have already assigned multiple IPs (both ISP's static IP) to the 'A' record ( host.example.com ) in the DNS. However in a round robin scenario is there a way I can ensure that my web user will not see a "cannot dislay web page" error ever ?? What are the better methods to achieve this??

    I've got a server with a LOT of small files -- many millions files, and over 1.5 TB of data. I need a decent backup strategy. Any filesystem-based backup takes too long -- just enumerating which files need to be copied takes a day. Acronis can do a disk image in 24 hours, but fails when it tries to do a differential backup the next day. DFS-R won't replicate a volume with this many files. I'm starting to look at Double Take, which seems to be able to do continuous replication. Are there other solutions that can do continuous replication at a block or sector level -- not file-by-file over a WAN?

They have internet connection from small ISP located in the same building, all I see is one CAT5 cable with 2 RJ45 connectors. One is going to WAN port on the router and another into LAN port on the same router. This is the only way for internet connection to work. I tried to connect my laptop to one of the RJ45 but it won't work. Now, what is the purpose for such setup?

  • pfSense: How to route traffic out the WAN port?

    Expert version i want to create a route in pfSense that will send traffic out the physical WAN port, not the PPPoE WAN port. i want to talk to talk to the web-server on my DSL modem, but it doesn't see packets wrapped in a PPPoE header. Long version My pfSense router is responsible for setting up the PPPoE connection over DSL to my ISP. When a machine on the LAN wants to sent packets to the internet, the default route sends packets out over the PPPoE connection. Those packets, wrapped in a PPPoE header, are sent on the ethernet cable to my DSL modem. From there they are sent the ISP, and the internet at large. i want a way to send a packet out the WAN port itself - not the PPPoE WAN port. My modem is sitting out there, with a http interface where i can monitor connection speed signal-to-noise ratio bandwidth connection time Whenever i try to set a route for destination of 192.168.2.1 (the IP that the modem will listen to for HTTP requests) to go out the WAN port, they instead end up going out the PPPoE port. The difference being that they're wrapped in a PPPoE protocol packet, and the modem isn't being sent the packet, it's being delivered to the ISP. Given that pfSense has no ability to direct traffic out the physical WAN port: how can i direct traffic out the physical WAN port on pfSense?

    Hi all, We are currently reviewing the bandwidth of our WAN links. How much bandwidth does a "typical" Citrix session utilize over a WAN link? JFYI - we are using Citrix Program Neighborhood V10 and each session is configured to use 256 colors. I have set up PRTG and it appears that for a server hosting 4 users, the traffic is approximately 100k to 300k per session. Is that about right? If you had to set a benchmark on a per-user basis, how much bandwidth would you assign to each user? Thanks in advance.

  • 2 Web Servers, 2 Domains, 1 WAN IP configuration

    The Problem: I have 2 domains, 2 web servers, 1 WAN IP. This is on a home network, so I don't have any crazy router or anything with the right tools, at least I don't think I do. I have a Dlink DIR-655 router. I need to be able to forward the website to the right box. 1 server is hosting www.site1.com, and the other should be hosting, www.site2.com. I forwarded the domain, to a port that is forwarded to that box. wanip:1235, 1235 is then forwarded to the internal IP of site2's server. But when I go to www.site2.com I get the 404 page of www.site1.com. I need www.site2.com to go to the right server. Is this something I can do in the virtual hosts of www.site1.com or is it something else. Also, if this isn't entirely possible, or if its a big process, I can just move www.site1.com to the www.site2.com's server, and use virtual hosts, that is an option that I would be okay with.

  • Local traffic through VPN, global traffic through WAN

    I have an issue with my internet connection. I am using VPN (Aventail Client) to access the local resources. When connected to VPN the Internet traffic passes through it, not through my LAN or Wi-Fi network. I would like to change the routing table to use the Wi-Fi adapter of the PC for WAN traffic. I have routing file, which works very well and routes the traffic in this way, but only when I am physically connected to the local network through LAN. But I can't set it to work with the VPN connection, because I have no gateway when I am connected to it. Etc this in bold is missing.   • Could not find DHCP daemon to get information on Belkin G Wifi Router

    I am using a Belkin G Wireless Router F5D7234, and i have a DSL connection with only a ethernet cable. So i connected the cable to the Modem port and allowed it to use Dyanmic IP, it worked successfully and an ip was assigned to it and multiple computers could connect to it and browse. But after some time the power went off and after then upon rebooting it is taking about half hour to get an IP address.     [edit Nov.16th 2009: Thank you for the responses. I'm no longer on this project so the problem is out of my hands. Be sure I will return with other problems :-) ] I have a strange occurence of regular databursts over my WAN links from 2 sites to a site with vCenter. What happens is that a vCenter server is managing local ESX 3.5 servers and 2 from 2 sites across a WAN link. Each server sends an approximately 3MB worth of TLS data (less than 10% of the time it varies to higher or lower) every 15 minutes (with a margin of 2 minutes). So far, I've not been able to single out a process that causes it. I looked through all applications on each site. So far, it seems to originate from one server on each site. Although it may be coincidence and therefore not relevant, I found that one server, with very few exceptions, does a burst at 00:00 on the hour. The other 3 during the hour are a bit off the 15 minute mark but back at the top of the hour, you can sync your watch on it. The other server follows 5 minutes after that with no such precision. But, as said, it never differs more than 2 minutes. Servers are ESX 3.5, vCenter is 2.5.

D-link has DSL(RJ11) port (which I don't want to use as Asmax replacement, while there is a separate Ethernet cable with a TV plugged to Asmax, which I don't want to configure from scratch on D-link). How should I connect my new D-link to work with Asmax? Via DSL port? Via one of the LAN ports (in which case I probably should change the purpose of this port in the config, I guess?). I tried connecting D-link both ways: LAN(ASMAX) to LAN(DLINK) LAN(ASMAX) to DSL(DLINK) (using RJ11 - RJ45 cable) I hope there is some setting in the DLINK's config that I overlooked. I haven't tried to see what's in ASMAX's config, but I guess I don't need to change anything there, while Linksys worked just fine?   • Best solution for Multi-WAN failover (inside & out)?

    Looking for a way to setup 2 ISPs in failover mode, for both incoming & outgoing traffic, for our small (<100 devices) network. The leading contender for now seems to be the Peplink Balance 310. However, a reseller I spoke with said it's great for 100% outgoing connectivity, but didn't seem to be confident in its abilities to handle incoming traffic. This is important as we host our own web site, Exchange e-mail, and virtual desktops (RDP). Do any Peplink owners use this for failover of incoming traffic? Are there other devices I should be considering? We're currently using a Cisco 1800 series router & ASA 5500 series firewall, with Comcast & T-1 lines (the goal being to replace the T with DSL/FiOS {whenever that becomes availble}). Price range: ~$1000 - $2500 USD. Thanks.
