  • Server problem (duh)

    - by j-t-s
Sorry the title couldn't be more specific. I installed Abyss Web Server. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and I have Wireless Mobile Broadband internet. I used to be able to access (and other people on other networks) my site by entering my ip address in the browser, but after I formatted, and the installed abyss web server again, this does not work anymore. There are no errors. I CAN visit my own site by entering my ip address BUT anybody else can't do the same, it just says "connecting" in the browser's statusbar and it never changes. I have consulted the docs and have found no help. Google hasn't helped with this problem either. Can somebody please help? Thank you :)

    - by Mysticgeek
Friday is finally here and it’s time to waste the afternoon on company time. Today we take a look at a super cool Classic NES Mashup called Super Mario Bros. Crossover. The game is Super Mario Bros. the way you remember it. However, the cool thing is you can switch between different classic NES game characters and use their moves and attacks during game play. Characters like Link, Mega Man, Samus…and more. When you are a different game character you’re shown tips on how to use their moves in the game.   Playing as Link… Between each world you can select a different character which is pretty neat. If you want to play this classic the way you remember it, you can be Mario too. This can be played using your keyboard, but it also supports using a controller, which you can find the instructions for at the link below.   You probably don’t want to bring a controller to work…but it’s cool they give the option. Make sure to turn the volume down on your computer so your boss is none the wiser, and believes your working hard. Play Super Mario Bros. Crossover How To Play Super Mario Bros. • Open Multiple Sites Without Reopening the Menus in Firefox

    - by Asian Angel
Are you frustrated with having to reopen your menus for each website that you need or want to view? Now you can keep those menus open while opening multiple websites with the Stay-Open Menu extension for Firefox. Stay-Open Menu in Action You can start using the extension as soon as you have installed it…simply access your favorite links in the “Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Awesome Bar, or History Menu” and middle click on the appropriate entries. Here you can see our browser opening the Productive Geek website and that the “Bookmarks Menu” is still open. As soon as you left click on a link or click outside the menus they will close normally like before. Note: Middle clicked links open in new tabs. The only time during our tests that a newly opened link “remained in the background” was for any links opened from the “Awesome Bar”. But as soon as the “Awesome Bar” was closed the new tabs automatically focused to the front. A link being opened from the “History Menu”…still open while the webpage is loading. Options The options are simple to sort through…enable or disable the additional “stay open” functions and enable automatic menu closing if desired. Conclusion If you get frustrated with having to reopen menus to access multiple webpages at one time then you might want to give this extension a try. • Android app hanging, sometimes until Force Close / Wait dialog appears

    - by fredley
I'm making an app that records uncompressed (wav format) audio. I'm using this class to actually record the audio. Currently, my application records fine (I can play the file), however when I click the button to stop the recording, the app hangs for 10 seconds or so, with no log output or any signs of life. Finally it comes round, dumps a load of errors into the log, updates the UI etc. I'm using AsyncTasks to try and avoid this kind of thing but it's not working. Here's my code: //Called on clicks of the record button. rar is the instance of RehearsalAudioRecorder private OnClickListener RecordListener = new OnClickListener(){ @Override public void onClick(View v) { Log.d("Record","Click"); if (recording){ new stopRecordingTask().execute(rar,null,null); startStop.setText("Record"); statusBar.setText("Recording Finished, ready to Encode"); }else{ recording = true; new startRecordingTask().execute(rar,null,null); startStop.setText("Stop"); statusBar.setText("Recording Started"); } } }; private class startRecordingTask extends AsyncTask<RehearsalAudioRecorder,Void,Void>{ @Override protected Void doInBackground(RehearsalAudioRecorder... rs) { RehearsalAudioRecorder r = rs[0]; r.setOutputFile("/sdcard/rarOut.wav"); r.prepare(); r.start(); return null; } } private class stopRecordingTask extends AsyncTask<RehearsalAudioRecorder,Void,Void>{ @Override protected Void doInBackground(RehearsalAudioRecorder... rs) { RehearsalAudioRecorder r = rs[0]; r.stop(); r.reset(); return null; } } In Logcat, I always get output like this, which has me stumped. I have no idea what's causing it (I'm logging the RehearsalAudioRecorder class, and it's being started/stopped correctly by the button clicks. This output occurs after the log output for the button click and correct stop() method call) 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/AudioRecord-JNI(22662): Unable to retrieve AudioRecord object, can't record 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): Error occured in updateListener, recording is aborted 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): stop() called on illegal state: STOPPED 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/AudioRecord-JNI(22662): Unable to retrieve AudioRecord object, can't record 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): Error occured in updateListener, recording is aborted 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): stop() called on illegal state: ERROR 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/AudioRecord-JNI(22662): Unable to retrieve AudioRecord object, can't record 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): Error occured in updateListener, recording is aborted 12-19 11:59:11.172: ERROR/uk.ac.cam.tfmw2.steg.RehearsalAudioRecorder(22662): stop() called on illegal state: ERROR ... 10 or more times I've been fiddling with this all day and I'm not getting anywhere, any input would be greatly appreciated. Update I've replace the AsyncTasks with Threads, still doesn't work, the app completely hangs when I click record, despite the fact the Log indicates there's nothing going on in the main thread. Still completely stumped.

Hello everyone My program is finished, but testing it out, i found out that the scrollpanel does not appear, it just resizes the JTextarea instead. • Get the screen height in Android

    - by Dan Bray
How can I get the available height of the screen in Android? I need to the height minus the status bar / menu bar or any other decorations that might be on screen and I need it to work for all devices. Also, I need to know this in the onCreate function. I know this question has been asked before but I have already tried their solutions and none of them work. Here are some of the things I have tried: I have tested this code on API 7 - 17. Unfortunately, on API 13 there is extra space at bottom both horizontally and vertically and on API 10, 8, and 7 there is not enough space at the bottom both horizontally and vertically. (I have not tested on obsolete API's): Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay(); DisplayMetrics metrics = new DisplayMetrics(); display.getMetrics(metrics); screenWidth = metrics.widthPixels; screenHeight = metrics.heightPixels; TypedValue tv = new TypedValue(); if(Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.HONEYCOMB) { if (getTheme().resolveAttribute(android.R.attr.actionBarSize, tv, true)) screenHeight -= TypedValue.complexToDimensionPixelSize(tv.data,getResources().getDisplayMetrics()); } int resourceId = getResources().getIdentifier("status_bar_height", "dimen", "android"); if (resourceId > 0) screenHeight -= getResources().getDimensionPixelSize(resourceId); This does not take into account the status bar / menu bar: Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay(); screenWidth = display.getWidth(); screenHeight = display.getHeight(); Neither does this: Point size = new Point(); getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getSize(size); screenWidth = size.x; screenHeight = size.y; Nor this: Point size = new Point(); getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getRealSize(size); screenWidth = size.x; screenHeight = size.y; This does not work: Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay(); DisplayMetrics metrics = new DisplayMetrics(); display.getMetrics(metrics); // since SDK_INT = 1; screenWidth = metrics.widthPixels; screenHeight = metrics.heightPixels; try { // used when 17 > SDK_INT >= 14; includes window decorations (statusbar bar/menu bar) screenWidth = (Integer) Display.class.getMethod("getRawWidth").invoke(display); screenHeight = (Integer) Display.class.getMethod("getRawHeight").invoke(display); } catch (Exception ignored) { // Do nothing } try { // used when SDK_INT >= 17; includes window decorations (statusbar bar/menu bar) Point realSize = new Point(); Display.class.getMethod("getRealSize", Point.class).invoke(display, realSize); screenWidth = realSize.x; screenHeight = realSize.y; } catch (Exception ignored) { // Do nothing } I then used the following code to subtract the height of the status bar and menu bar from the screen height: int result = 0; int resourceId = getResources().getIdentifier("status_bar_height", "dimen", "android"); if (resourceId > 0) result = getResources().getDimensionPixelSize(resourceId); screenHeight -= result; result = 0; if (screenHeight >= screenWidth) resourceId = getResources().getIdentifier("navigation_bar_height", "dimen", "android"); else resourceId = getResources().getIdentifier("navigation_bar_height_landscape", "dimen", "android"); if (resourceId > 0) result = getResources().getDimensionPixelSize(resourceId); screenHeight -= result; On API 17 it correctly calculates the height of the status bar and menu bar in portrait but not in landscape. On API 10, it returns 0. I need it to work ideally on all devices or minimum API 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Show CMFCRibbonStatusBar

    - by praetorian20
Hi, I'm creating a simple SDI app using the new VS2008 service pack. I added ribbon support but all I want on the ribbon are the Open & Close buttons. I commented out all the code that creates the other default buttons and categories but doing this also gets rid of the status bar (CMFCRibbonStatusBar). I can't find what member function is called when I click the checkbox that displays the statusbar in the default generated code. I've tried the following but it doesn't work: m_wndStatusBar.ShowWindow( SW_SHOWNORMAL ); How do I have the status bar showing without having to have the 'Home' category and 'View' panel (with the 'Show status bar' checkbox) being generated? Thanks, Ashish.

  • Bound Command not firing on another viewModel? What Am I doing wrong?

    - by devnet247
Hi I cannot seem to bind a command to a button.I have a treeview on the left showing Country City etc.. And I tabcontrol on the right. do I This uses 4 viewModels rootviewModel-ContinentViewModel-CountryViewModel-CityViewModel What I am building is based on http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/TreeViewWithViewModel.aspx Now on one of the tabs I have a Toolbar with a button "TestButton" that I have mapped in zaml. This does not fire! The reason is not firing is because I m binding the RootViewModel but the command that is bound in zaml is in the cityViewModel. If I have a notebook with three spreadsheet widgets, what is the best way to have changes to the spreadsheet update a dictionary (or maybe an sqlite file?). Do all wx grid objects come with a built in dictionary related to the SetNumberRows and SetNumberCols? Basically I am looking for guidance on how to work with the user-input data from a spreadsheet widget, as in this example adapted from the tutorial on python.org: class ExSheet(wx.lib.sheet.CSheet): def __init__(self, parent): sheet.CSheet.__init__(self, parent) self.SetLabelBackgroundColour('#CCFF66') self.SetNumberRows(50) self.SetNumberCols(50) class Notebook(wx.Frame): def __init__(self, parent, id, title): wx.Frame.__init__(self, parent, id, title) nb = wx.Notebook(self, -1, style=wx.NB_BOTTOM) self.sheet1 = ExSheet(nb) self.sheet2 = ExSheet(nb) self.sheet3 = ExSheet(nb) nb.AddPage(self.sheet1, "Sheet1") nb.AddPage(self.sheet2, "Sheet2") nb.AddPage(self.sheet3, "Sheet3") self.sheet1.SetFocus() self.StatusBar()

  • Google Chrome "window.open" workaround?

    - by McBonio
Hi Folks! I have been working on a web app and for part of it I need to open a new window. I have this working on all browsers, my sticking point is with Google Chrome. Chrome seems to ignore the window features which is causing me issues, the thing I'm struggling with is I need the address bar to be editable within the new window. FF, IE, Safari and Opera do this fine, Chrome does not. My Code: <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- function popitup(url) { newwindow=window.open(url,'name','toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,location=1,statusbar=0,menubar=1,resizable=1,width=800,height=600'); if (window.focus) {newwindow.focus()} return false; } // --> </script> Any help would be gratefully received! Thanks in advance :)

  • Google Chrome window.open height includes URL bar

    - by andyjeffries
When we open a window using: window.open("/calendar",'calendar','width=950,height=576,titlebar=no,statusbar=no,menubar=no,resizable=no,scrollbars=no'); Firefox 3 and IE 7 open it to have a content area height of 576 plus the browser items (URL bar, status bar, etc). Chrome however opens it to have a total height of 576 meaning a scrollbar appears to the right of the content (and then the bottom because the width is now reduced). How can I get around this? It's for a heavy layout part of a web app so it's not just a matter of "let the user scroll", the client doesn't want that. Has anyone come across this? I don't mind browser sniffing and opening the window bigger, but I know that's yucky these days.

  • Enable Media Streaming in Windows Home Server to Windows Media Player

    - by Mysticgeek
One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to stream photos, music, and video to other computers on your network. Today we take a look at how to enable streaming in WHS to Windows Media Player in Vista and Windows 7. Turn on Media Streaming on WHS To enable Media Streaming from Windows Home Server, open the Windows Home Server Console and click on Settings. Now in the Setting screen select Media Sharing, then in the right column under Media Library Sharing turn on Library Sharing for the folders you want to stream.   If you have a Windows 7 machine on your network make sure media streaming is enabled. You should then see the server under Other Libraries and can start streaming your media collection.   Stream Video to Media Player 11 Now let’s say you want to stream videos to another member of your household who’s using a Vista machine in another room through Windows Media Player 11. Open WMP and click on Library then Media Sharing. Now click the box next to Find media that others are sharing then click Ok. Now you should see the server listed under Library…where in this example it’s geekserver. Since we only enabled Video streaming for this example, we need to click on the category icon and select Video. Now you can scroll through the available videos… And start enjoying your favorite videos streamed from the server through WMP 11 on Vista. Of course you can use this method to stream photos and music as well, you just need to enable what you want to stream from the Home Server Console. You can also stream your media to Windows Media Center and Xbox which we will be covering soon. • How To Personalize the Windows Command Prompt

    - by Matthew Guay
Command line interfaces can be downright boring, and always seem to miss out on the fresh coats of paint liberally applied to the rest of Windows.  Here’s how to add a splash of color to Command Prompt and make it unique. By default, Windows Command Prompt is white text on a black background. It get’s the job done, but maybe you want to add some color to it.   To get an overview of what we can do with the color command, let’s enter: color /? So, to get the color you want, enter color then the option for the background color followed by the font color.  For example, let’s make an old-fashioned green on black look by entering: color 02   There are a bunch of different combinations you can do, like this black background with red text. color 04 You can’t mess it up too much.  The color command won’t let you set both the font and the background to the same color, which would make it unreadable.  Also, if you want to get back to the default settings, just enter: color Now we’re back to plain-old black and white. Personalize Command Prompt Without Commands If you’d prefer to change the color without entering commands, just click on the Command Prompt icon in the top left corner of the window and select Properties. Select the Colors tab, and then choose the color you want for the screen text and background.  You can also enter your own RGB color combination if you want.   Here we entered the RGB values to get a purple background color like Ubuntu 10.04. Back in the Properties dialog, you can also change your Command Prompt font from the font tab.  Choose any font you want, as long as the one you want is one of the three listed here. Customizations you make via the Properties dialog are saved and will be used any time you open Command Prompt, but any customizations you make with the Color command are only for that session. Conclusion Whether you want to make your command prompt bright enough to cause a sunburn or old-style enough to scare a mainframe operator, with these settings, you can make Command Prompt a bit more unique.   Similar Articles Productive Geek Tips Use "Command Prompt Here" in Windows VistaVerify the Integrity of Windows Vista System FilesKeyboard Ninja: Scrolling the Windows Command Prompt With Only the KeyboardRun a Command as Administrator from the Windows 7 / Vista Run boxStart an Application Assigned to a Specific CPU in Windows Vista TouchFreeze Alternative in AutoHotkey The Icy Undertow Desktop Windows Home Server – Backup to LAN The Clear & Clean Desktop Use This Bookmarklet to Easily Get Albums Use AutoHotkey to Assign a Hotkey to a Specific Window Latest Software Reviews Tinyhacker Random Tips DVDFab 6 Revo Uninstaller Pro Registry Mechanic 9 for Windows PC Tools Internet Security Suite 2010 How to Add Exceptions to the Windows Firewall Office 2010 reviewed in depth by Ed Bott FoxClocks adds World Times in your Statusbar (Firefox) Have Fun Editing Photo Editing with Citrify Outlook Connector Upgrade Error Gadfly is a cool Twitter/Silverlight app

  • Using Pandora in Boxee

    - by Mysticgeek
Boxee is a very cool multimedia app that lets you access and stream your digital media in many different ways. There’s also a lot of extra apps included with it, and today we take a look at the Pandora application in Boxee. Pandora has been a favorite free music streaming service that’s been around for some time now. Though there are new services like Grooveshark and Spotify that are competing, Pandora is still a reliable choice. It’s now included in Boxee, and here we take a look at using it. Create a Pandora Account If you don’t already have a Pandora account, you can easily create one at their website (link below). Pandora in Boxee To start using Pandora from Boxee, launch Boxee and from the main menu select Apps. Now from the My Apps section select Pandora. When the Pandora app menu comes up, select Start. Now you need to log into your Pandora account. After signing in you can starting listening to your stations, viewing artist info, and cover art. All while enjoying some cool visuals in the background. From the controls at the top you can control playback, skip songs, control volume, get information on why a song was picked, and give a song a thumbs up or down. Of course you can also pull up your stations and switch between them and add more. The same features you’ve come to expect from Pandora are available. One thing we noticed missing is not being able to click on the band or artist to get additional information about them –which you can do on the Pandora site and desktop app. But that isn’t a deal breaker by any means, and we’re hoping the feature will be added in the future. Then while you’re checking out other apps, shows, and setting within Boxee, the cool visuals continue and the songs from you stations keep playing. Conclusion Pandora is a great streaming music service and a welcome edition to Boxee. If you’re a fan of Pandora now you can listen to it on your home theater system. If you’re new to Boxee, make sure to check out our article on getting started with Boxee. • Share Your Top 30 Visited Domains with Visitation Cloud for Firefox

    - by Asian Angel
Curious about the domains that you visit most or perhaps you want a way to share that information on a social website? Now you can see and share the 30 most visited domains in your browser’s history with the Visitation Cloud extension. Accessing Visitation Cloud As soon as you install the extension you can get started using it. Depending on how your browser’s UI is set up there are three methods for accessing Visitation Cloud: a “Visitation Cloud Button” inserted at the end of your “Bookmarks Toolbar”, a menu listing in the “Tools Menu”, and a “Toolbar Button” (not shown here). Visitation Cloud in Action As soon as you activate Visitation Cloud a new window will appear with your top domains displayed in a cloud format. Keep in mind that this is more than just a static image…each listing is actually a clickable link. Clicking on any of the listings will open that domain in a new tab or window depending on your particular browser settings. If you feel that you have a great set of links and want to share it with your friends then that is easy to do. Right click anywhere within the Visitation Cloud Window and select “Save as…”. The “cloud image” can be saved in “.png, .jpg, or Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg)” format. For our example we chose the “.svg format”. Perhaps you love the set of links but not the layout…right click and select “Randomize” to change how the cloud looks. Here is our cloud after being “Randomized”. Things definitely got moved around… Accessing the Visitation Cloud Image in other Browsers Once you have your “cloud image” saved you can share it with friends or save it for your own future use in other browsers. Here is our “cloud image” open in Opera Browser with link opening in progress. The same “cloud image” open in Google Chrome. Very nice… Conclusion While this may not be something that everyone will use Visitation Cloud does make for a rather unique, interesting, & fun way to access and share your most visited domains. • Speed Up the Help Dialog in Windows and Office

    - by Matthew Guay
When you click help, you don’t want to wait for your computer to bring it to you.  Here’s how you can speed up the help dialog in Windows and Office. If you have a slow internet connection, chances are you’ve been frustrated by the Help dialog in Windows and Office trying to download fresh content every time you open them. This can be great if the updated help files contain better content, but sometimes you just want to find what you were looking for without waiting.  Here’s how you can turn off the automatic online help. Use Local Help in Windows Windows 7 and Vista’s help dialog usually tries to load the latest content from the net, but this can take a long time on slow connections. If you’re seeing the above screen a lot, you may want to switch to offline help.  Click the “Online Help” button at the bottom, and select “Get offline Help”. Now your computer will just load the pre-installed help files.  And don’t worry; if there’s a major update to your help files, Windows will download and install it through Windows Update.   Stupid Geek Tip: An easy way to open Windows Help is to click on your desktop or Start Menu and press F1 on your keyboard. Use Local Help in Office This same trick works in Office 2007 and 2010.  We’ve actually had more problems with Office’s help being tardy. Solve this the same way as with Windows help.  Click on the “Connected to Office.com” or “Connected to Office Online” button, depending on your version of Office, and select “Show content only from this computer”. This will automatically change the settings for Help in all of your Office applications. While this may not be a major trick, it can be helpful especially if you have a slow internet connection and want to get things done quickly.  Similar Articles Productive Geek Tips How to See the About Dialog and Version Information in Office 2007Speed Up SATA Hard Drives in Windows VistaMake Mouse Navigation Faster in WindowsSpeed up Your Windows Vista Computer with ReadyBoostSet the Speed Dial as the Opera Startup Page TouchFreeze Alternative in AutoHotkey The Icy Undertow Desktop Windows Home Server – Backup to LAN The Clear & Clean Desktop Use This Bookmarklet to Easily Get Albums Use AutoHotkey to Assign a Hotkey to a Specific Window Latest Software Reviews Tinyhacker Random Tips DVDFab 6 Revo Uninstaller Pro Registry Mechanic 9 for Windows PC Tools Internet Security Suite 2010 FoxClocks adds World Times in your Statusbar (Firefox) Have Fun Editing Photo Editing with Citrify Outlook Connector Upgrade Error Gadfly is a cool Twitter/Silverlight app Enable DreamScene in Windows 7 Microsoft’s “How Do I ?” Videos

  • Find a Faster DNS Server with Namebench

    - by Mysticgeek
One way to speed up your Internet browsing experience is using a faster DNS server. Today we take a look at Namebench, which will compare your current DNS server against others out there, and help you find a faster one. Namebench Download the file and run the executable (link below). Namebench starts up and will include the current DNS server you have configured on your system. In this example we’re behind a router and using the DNS server from the ISP. Include the global DNS providers and the best available regional DNS server, then start the Benchmark. The test starts to run and you’ll see the queries it’s running through. The benchmark takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. After it’s complete you’ll get a report of the results. Based on its findings, it will show you what DNS server is fastest for your system. It also displays different types of graphs so you can get a better feel for the different results. You can export the results to a .csv file as well so you can present the results in Excel. Conclusion This is a free project that is in continuing development, so results might not be perfect, and there may be more features added in the future. If you’re looking for a method to help find a faster DNS server for your system, Namebench is a cool free utility to help you out. If you’re looking for a public DNS server that is customizable and includes filters, you might want to check out our article on helping to protect your kids from questionable content using OpenDNS.
