  • retrieving google chrome booksmarks after uninstall

    Hello, I had recently (and unfortunately) uninstalled the google chrome browser from my computer -while completely forgetting about the dozens of bookmarks I had stored on it. Is there a method/directory to retrieve these chrome bookmarks after having already uninstalled??? Please do help! would be a lifesaver!

  • WINDOWS: Your computer hangs. You can windows + R (run dialog) but performance is so halted taskMGR

    The question is, what process are available to try to recover from total system instability before pulling the plug when we can do nothing but programs or batches in the path from the run dialog (windows + r key), and performance is so dead that taskMGR / procEXP / other programs with visual guis are not usable? I am not a windows expert, but ideally someone out there has written a program that does more or less stuff like this: Immediately set (or perhaps I can set from the run prompt) its priority to extremely high, evaluate performance bottlenecks. E.g. is CPU 100%? If so identify offending program(s) or problems. Attempt / log fixes, then provide crude feedback asking the user if his performance has stabilized enough to abort, wait a few seconds, if no feedback continue, etc. etc. Eventually try to do any "system cleanup" if the program decides it cannot recover and perhaps finally provide a series of beeps to the user, or what have you, to say "OK, I give up, time to pull the plug". Ideally create a log, when able. These kinds of horrible hangs are a situation where surely trying something, anything, is better than nothing -- as long as that something is intelligent -- when the alternative is ripping out the power coord. Again, I am not a windows expert, so perhaps there is a much more elegant "hands on" approach I am not aware of.

  • Copy and paste RESULTS of a file search

    In order for me to get the results of a file search in a readable format, I use the following command line in a command prompt: dir *.* /s > myResultList.txt I then open that list in Excel, use fixed width format to get rid of all the stuff I don't want and then I have my list. Seems like a lot to do for something so simple. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for something that would work better than this?

    I have recently created an account with Super User with a Gmail account Now that I'm trying to login in only find the OpenID login and when i login with my OpenID it seems Super User doesn't recognize it with my Gmail account The result is I have 2 accounts now an old one(Gmail) with reputation and a new one without (OpenID) When I First Signup I did it with Windows 7 now I'm working with Ubuntu 10.10 So my question is: How can i merge my previously superuser Gmail account and my OpenID account with Super User?

  • How to run a script in Ubuntu via SSH as superuser?

    So I have a script that needs to be executed remotely as root. This isn't a problem with most Linux distros since they have a root account. But since Ubuntu does not, executing anything as root requires a 2-step process of entering the account password twice - once to log in and once for sudo. The SSH process to launch the script is automated, so it cannot pause for user input for the second password request. Does anyone know, short of hacking Ubuntu to re-enable root (not an option), if unattended SSH script execution with superuser privilege on the target machine is possible? Also, having no experience with Debian, does Debian behave this way too?

  • OS X superuser folders automatically created. Perusers launchd process appears to kill 501

    New Apple laptop OSX 10.8.2. I have used OS X but many years previously, and am not familiar with subtleties or changes in com.apple.launchd.peruser.x... I have previously (and in retrospect, foolishly) made changes to these rapidly spawned new peruser accounts (my initial reaction was that if ipfw was disabled, then I might well be under hacker attack, which I have dealt with, years ago), but I believe I was wrong, and the results of my efforts at preserving the system's integrity have in fact been destructive, overreactive, and have resulted in much work to restore. My understanding from other posts is that superuser protocols have changed quite dramatically since I bought the first developer version of OS X many years ago. Haven't developed on Apple much since then, w/ exception of WebObjects (IMO, much underrated at that time, and was more user friendly than ASP (prior to .NET, I vaguely recall). Creation of apparently nasty peruser folders appear to confound 501 process, which logs inability to find firewall (ipfw). Can someone help me with this? I am concerned that either the system is improperly configured, an application was improperly installed (although there is little here beyond Apple's SDK, which I find quite accommodating and intuitive). Still, I am a novice, only sporadically develop at this time, and would really just like to see this system running happily. Please offer assistance, in the form of potential info sources, or if you have had a similar experience, then perhaps scripts to suss out this issue. I do not wish to damage the system, but Apple's Developer connection and discussion threads do not appear to have dealt with this particular issue recently... Although I may well have missed something you have not - please apprise. Any assistance on this issue is very much appreciated - by an old guy, who wants to do some things which were fun about 20 years ago.

    As admin (root) for a group of computers, I have to now install a content filter on a shared Mac, to first catch illegal downloads, and to prevent future peer to peer DL by monitoring. I can install the OSX app for myself (as admin) and have it run for any new users, but I have to have it installed and enabled it for existing users. How can I install an OSX app, to run for normal users, when it requires that it be install as admin (root) for each user?

  • Do superuser's prefer business grade or consumer grade PCs?

    Having burned through a number of consumer grade laptops in recent years, I'm wondering if the additional cost of a business grade computer is a worth while investment. I'm considering getting a laptop with slightly lower specs to justify the added cost. The primary benefits I see are: (i) the notebook will be more reliable, (ii) have a longer life and (iii) the warranty (parts and labor) will be 3 years instead of 1 year. Are there any other considerations one should keep in mind when shopping for a business grade PC? Is purchasing direct from the manufacturer wise or are there other options that should be considered too? Thanks in advance!

  • How do I remove the selected tag filter when searching for Unanswered questions on Superuser?

    I've been looking for unanswered questions trying to build some reputation here. Once I select a tag filter in the sidebar, I'm shown all of the questions with that tag. Choosing more tags makes the filter more specific and choosing one of the tags from the set I've already chosen replaces the whole set with that one tag. But, how do I remove that lone tag so that I can return to the full list of Unanswered questions?

  • Recommended apps for securing/protecting a new desktop machine install?

    I'm hoping to harness the collective tips of superuser to gather recommended apps/configurations to keep a new desktop clean, virus free, and hopefully lower software rot. I ask because I've recently come across tools like dropbox, deepfreeze, returnil, etc, and I'm curious what other ones are out there to protect a new box. I personally am interested in Windows, but feel free to comment on whatever OS you'd like, freeware or otherwise. Ideally specify the OS in your answer(s). One answer per program please.   • How can I determine whether a shellscript runs as root or not?

    This is something I've been curious about. I make a lot of small bash scripts (.sh files) to do tasks that I routinely do. Some of those tasks require everything to be ran as superuser. I've been curious: Is it possible to, within the BASH script prior to everything being run, check if the script is being run as superuser, and if not, print a message saying You must be superuser to use this script, then subsequently terminate the script itself. The other side of that is I'd like to have the script run when the user is superuser, and not generate the error. Any ideas on coding (if statements, etc.) on how to execute the aforementioned?

So Google seems to strip the fragment, which results in exactly the same page under another URL (= containing the answer ID /652058 as suffix), and indexes it, too -- despite rel-canonical and duplicate content. Shouldn’t Google recognize this and only index the canonical variant? And what could be the reason why Stack Exchange includes the answer ID in the URL path, and not only in the fragment (resulting in various URL variants for the same page)?

  • How do I run my application as superuser from Eclipse?

    I'm running in to an error when I try to run my server application from Eclipse. The error is java.net.BindException: Permission denied. I think this is because I am using port 443 to set up an SSL connection. I can get around this problem if I run my code on the command line using javac and sudo. Is there a way to set up Eclipse so that when I hit the run button, my application is executed with sudo?

    I am storing my sitemaps in my web folder. I want web crawlers (Googlebot etc) to be able to access the file, but I dont necessarily want all and sundry to have access to it. For example, this site (superuser.com), has a site index - as specified by its robots.txt file (http://superuser.com/robots.txt). However, when you type http://superuser.com/sitemap.xml, you are directed to a 404 page. How can I implement the same thing on my website? I am running a LAMP website, also I am using a sitemap index file (so I have multiple site maps for the site). I would like to use the same mechanism to make them unavailable via a browser, as described above.

    If you have to use Internet Explorer for work and need to open a different set of work-specific tabs every day, is there a quick and easy way to do it instead of opening each one individually? The Question SuperUser reader bobSmith1432 is looking for a quick and easy way to open different daily sets of tabs in Internet Explorer for his work: When I open Internet Explorer on different days of the week, I want different tabs to be opened automatically. I have to run different reports for work each day of the week and it takes a lot of time to open the 5-10 tabs I use to run the reports. It would be a lot faster if, when I open Internet Explorer, the tabs I needed would automatically load and be ready. Is there a way to open 5-10 different tabs in Internet Explorer depending on the day of the week? Example: Monday – 6 Accounting Pages Tuesday – 7 Billing Pages Wednesday – 5 HR Pages Thursday – 10 Schedule Pages Friday – 8 Work Summary/Order Pages Is there an easier way for Bob to get all those tabs to load and be ready to go each day instead of opening them individually every time? The Answer SuperUser contributor Julian Knight has a simple, non-script solution for us: Rather than trying the brute force method, how about a work around? Open up each set of tabs either in different windows, or one set at a time, and save all tabs to bookmark folders. Put the folders on the bookmark toolbar for ease of access. Each day, right-click on the appropriate folder and click on ‘Open in tab group’ to open all the tabs. You could put all the day folders into a top-level folder to save space if you want, but at the expense of an extra click to get to them. If you really must go further, you need to write a program or script to drive Internet Explorer. The easiest way is probably writing a PowerShell script. Special Note: There are various scripts shared on the discussion page as well, so the solution shown above is just one possibility out of many.     I installed Windows 7 and Windows 8 in EFI mode on a hard disk some days ago. Today, the bootloader got missing/corrupted. I currently have the Windows 8 installer on a flash drive and tried using the Automatic Repair option to repair the bootloader but it didn't do anything. The Startup Repair option is also missing in the Windows 8 installer. How I can repair/recreate the EFI bootloader from the Command Prompt? BCDEDIT returns the following message: The requested system device cannot be found.
