• How do I get the Windows 7 installer onto a USB drive?

  I'm having trouble installing Windows 7 onto my old laptop. The problem appears to be the laptop's DVD-ROM no longer seems to work. Sucks. So, I'm trying to figure out how to get a bootable USB with my Windows 7 DVD info onto it. I found this link here on superuser.com: http://superuser.com/questions/66948/place-a-bootable-iso-on-a-usb-drive That looks good, except for the detail about making the USB bootable. It said that the OS you're making it bootable on must be the same as the machine you're going to be installing it on. I can't do that. The machine I would make it bootable from is a 64-bit version of Windows 7. The target machine is 32-bit. So, how's this going to work?

• How to copy Netscape email

  I think I have the Netscape mail-directory from old computer, how do I copy it to new computer? (Netscape 7.1 Mail, Thunderbird or Seamonkey). I think I have the files in Olduserbackup\xjuwtwtb.slt\Mail I create a new mail account with server pop.superuser.com, and find a directory with that name in C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ou6umlif.slt\Mail I replace the files with those from the backup, but Netscape still shows pop.superuser.com in its interface. Is there some kind of registry setting somewhere I will have to change?

• How can I generate a list of appendices with LaTeX, seperate from table of contents (toc)

  LaTeX' appendix environment formats sections differently and uses a different enumeration in the table of contents: \begin{appendix} \section{superuser} \dots{} .... Shows up as       A       superuser            11 in the \tableofcontents. Unfortunately, I have to use a different style: the appendix is not to show up in the table of contents, but in a seperate listing right before the appendix. I see the following options to solve this: suppress output in tableofcontents and somehow recreate the part on a different page generate a custom listing of specified / the following section manually create a list with the same formatting of the tableofcontents I use scrartcl as document class. PS: appedix / appendices is not a tag yet

• How to copy/paste LARGE amounts of text in Windows

  I am not sure if this is more suited for Superuser or Stackoverflow, but here goes... A little bit of background: I'm learning SQL and was trying to make a very large table which I could use for optimization tests. Something generic with random values. I created a little Java program to do just that, and was able to put out a text file with 100,000 lines, each line being an SQL INSERT statement for a new random record. However, with anything much bigger than 100,000 lines, I had problems either opening/using the text file in any text editor, or copying/pasting the text to the windows clipboard and then into SQL Developer so I could execute it as a script. I'm probably overlooking something really obvious, or doing something really stupid. There has got to be a better way to do this, but I couldn't find anything through Google or Stackoverflow or Superuser. Thanks!

• What is the correct way to use Chef-server's 'validation key'?

  It seems to me that the recommended way of adding clients to a chef server - or my understanding of it - is flawed. from the docs: When the chef-client runs, it checks if it has a client key. If the client key does not exist, it then attempts to "borrow" the validation client's identity to register itself with the server. In order to do that, the validation client's private key needs to be copied to the host and placed in /etc/chef/validation.pem. So the "validation key" is basically the superuser credential, allowing anyone who possesses it full access to the chef server? Am I reading this right? Surely the correct model would be for clients to generate their own keypair, and submit the public key to the chef server. Clients should never need access to this superuser "validation key". How can I do it in this, more secure, manner?

• jQuery Plugin Overwriting Parameters

  Hey Everyone, This maybe a very mundane question, but this is the first jQuery plugin that I write and I'm a bit fuzzy on understanding the scope rules in Javascript. I'm trying to write an simple jQuery plugin that wraps around the Stack Overflow API. I'm starting off by trying to work with the Flair API. I've noticed that music played over my BT setup sometimes pitch bends in ways I don't remember the original doing, and I'm wondering if SBC has something to do with it.   I have to apply sudo chmod a+r /dev/dsp or /dev/audio but in my Ubuntu 12.10 i do not have such.   How can I fix the permissions to get rid of the following error and mount my USB and internal CD/DVD drive: Adding read ACL for uid 1000 to `/media/bret' failed: Operation not supported These drives worked fin in 12.04, but I apparently now don't have permissions to mount these drives in 12.10. I tried chmod in Terminal, but I couldn't enter as the superuser, so I seem to be stuck. Please help! Thanks

• Can I change the "From" name and address without going into Mail.app's preferences?

  Can I somehow add an editable "From" field to Mail.app, a bit like Virtual Identity for Thunderbird, just like I could change the "Reply To" address on the fly? In Mail.app, one can set up multiple email addresses for a single account by just entering a comma-seperated list like [email protected], [email protected]. Next, when composing a message, Mail offers a dropdown to select a "From" address. And when replying†, it automatically selects the right address if it can find a match: Nice, but I'd like to be able to change the "From" on the fly, without going into the Account Information. Also, in previous versions of Mail one could even specify multiple Full Names for a single account: Email Address: Arjan <[email protected]>, Arjan on SU <[email protected]> But nowadays, Mail only uses the setting of Full Name, and even ignores names in the Email Address field when no value for Full Name is set at all. Hence, it would be great if I could change the Full Name on the fly as well. I had no luck finding a plugin for Mail yet. † When using sub-addressing, anything that is sent to [email protected] is simply delivered to [email protected]. I'd then like to reply with the same full address, rather than just [email protected] if Mail cannot find a match, without going into the Account Information first. I sometimes also want to compose a new message with a new sub-addressing-address.

• EFI pxe network boot error

When attempting to network boot RHEL 5.4 on an old ia64 machine I get the following error : ![alt text][3] So I've basically followed the tutorial here : [http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/doc/suse/sles9/adminguide-sles9/ch04s03.html][4] DHCPD,TFTPD etc are already setup and working with standard x86 PXE clients. I've unpacked the boot.img file into /tftpboot/ia64/ and passed the path to the elilo.efi file via DHCP with the filename ""; option. Changing this filename generates a PXE file not found error (see below). So I assume that PXE has found the file... ![alt text][5] The only thing wrong I can find in the logs is : Jan 6 19:49:31 dhcphost in.tftpd[31379]: tftp: client does not accept options Any ideas? • Windows 7, network connection with no default gateway: any way to change the "Unknown network" statu

  Hi, I have a computer running Windows 7 Pro RTM. This computer has two network connections: A Wi-fi connection to the Internet (through a home router) which works just fine. An OpenVPN virtual network connection. More precisely, this is a virtual Ethernet connection which behaves exactly like a physical Ethernet wired connection. My problem is that the "Network and sharing center" shows "Unknown network" for the OpenVPN connection. After some research I found that logical networks (outside a domain) are identified by the MAC address of the default gateway of the connection. Problem is, the OpenVPN connection has no default gateway: it is a private network, so I don't need one... Consequently, the "Unknown network" is always considered public, so the firewall is always in "public mode", which I don't want. Plus, I can't rename "Unknown connection" or anything (which makes sense), so it is kinda ugly. My goal is to define a proper logical network for the OpenVPN connection with the private profile. I know of some workarounds (disable the firewall, modify security policy to make all unknown networks "private") but they're still workarounds. I just want my clients to connect to the VPN without having to disable their firewall settings, without changing global configuration with potential side-effects (the "security policy" solution) and without having to look at an ugly "Unknown connection" in the Network and sharing center. Is there any way I can do this? I tried to check what was going on in the registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList is interesting), but I still didn't find a way to "force" the OpenVPN connection to be assigned to a logical network. • How does a vsftpd server work and how to configure it?

  I was asked to configure a FTP server, based on the vsftpd package. The server is running on a remote machine to which I have a superuser privilege access. Being unfamiliar with the mechanics of FTP servers, I tried to figure out how user ftp accounts are configured. The previous maintainer used a shell script, which works on a list that we maintain to track users accounts and passwords, to configure the ftp accounts. From reading the script, I see that he generates a list of usernames and passwords, and actually creates a user account on the Linux machine. This means that for each user that we configure in the list, a new user account is being added by the adduser command: adduser --home /home/ftp --no-create-home $user (but w/o a private /home/username directory - using the /home/ftp instaed). Each of these users can log into his account using the ssh command. This fact seems a little strange to me, as I'd think that the ftp account should be decoupled from the Ubuntu user accounts. As another side effect, when a user connects using a web browser, he is connected to the /home/ftp directory. However, he can then use "Up to a higher level directory" link to go up and effectively have access to all of our system. So, the questions are: Is this really how the FTP server supposed to work in terms of configuring ftp accounts? If not, how do I configure the vsftpd server in a way that I have only the superuser Ubuntu account on that machine and all ftp account are... just FTP user accounts? Additionally, these ftp account should be configured in terms of how and what they are allowed to access.

• Ubuntu root privs installation issue

  I am a fairly new Ubuntu user (and Linux user, for that matter) and I just downloaded a program whose installer was a .sh file. Not thinking, I copied the installer to an /opt subdirectory, thinking that I was going to install the application there: sudo cp ~/Downloads/fooInstaller.sh /opt/someDir I can't remember, but I either had to use sudo because /opt required it, or I just used it without thinking, but in any case, I prefixed with sudo. Once in /opt/someDir, I executed the installer again, using sudo: sudo sh fooInstaller.sh The terminal went crazy, and a few seconds later, a graphical install wizard popped up that guided me through the rest of the process. At the end of the wizard I was prompted to launch the program, and I did, and everything was great. Until... I closed the program, and attempted to add it to my Ubuntu "panel" (the icon panel at the top of the screen). The program was installed to /usr/local/foo/theProgram, and so I specified that URL as the command in the custom app launcher. When I open the program through the panel/launcher (at the top of the screen), the program doesn't load or operate correctly. I get a lot of error messages complaining about being denied permissions. I'm assuming that this is a "superuser/installation/privs" issue, and not a problem with the application (hence this post at superuser.com instead of the application's forums), because when I launch the program from the terminal with sudo, it opens and executes perfectly fine, just like it did the first time around after the install wizard finished. I realize I'm probably going to have to uninstall the program completely, and re-install it differently. Finally, my question: After uninstalling, can I avoid all these issue by just running the installer (sh fooInstaller.sh) right out of my Downloads directory, sans the sudo prefix? If not, how do I get the program to install without root privs so that I can add it to my panel/launcher and get it executing correctly? Sorry for the long post but I didn't want to omit any details because, as I'm sure you can tell, I'm not really sure I know what I'm doing. Thanks for any help here!

• GnuPG Command Line - Verifying KeePass Signature

  I'm trying to verify the PGP Signature of the latest version of KeePass 2.14's setup file against this signature, but this is the output I receive: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --verify C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: the signature could not be verified. Please remember that the signature file (.sig or .asc) should be the first file given on the command line. C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> I found this command here, but it made no mention about ".sig" or ".asc" files, so I figured I did something wrong. By reading (http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/gpgv.html#gpgv), I further tried the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG>gpg.exe --pgpfile C:\Users\User\Desktop\KeePass-2.14-Setup.exe gpg: Invalid option "--pgpfile" C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU\GnuPG> As you can see, the results are quite obfuscating... I took a look at this on SuperUser (http://superuser.com/questions/16160/short-easy-to-understand-explanation-of-gpg-pgp-for-nontechnical-people - I couldn't use "a href" due to the built in spam filter that discriminates against users with < 10 rep; this is the same reason for the link above this link), but none of the links seemed to really address my question, at least not directly enough for me to get any idea on how to move forward on this. Can anybody here help me with the esoteric technicality of OpenPGP & the associated use of the GnuPG program? I've felt pretty dumb learning VBS, but this is beyond humiliating: it's absolutely debilitating and maiming whatever confidence I had with my IT skills (then again, I have no justification for making any boast either, as I have yet to get my A+ Cert, lol).

• Using secure proxies with Google Chrome

  Whenever I use a secure proxy with Google Chrome I get ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID, I tried a lot of different scenarios and versions. The certificate I'm using a self-signed certificate: openssl genrsa -out key.pem 1024 openssl req -new -key key.pem -out request.pem openssl x509 -req -days 30 -in request.pem -signkey key.pem -out certificate.pem Note: this certificate works (with a warning since it's self-signed) when I try to setup a simple HTTPS server. The proxy Then I start a secure proxy on localhost:8080. There are a several ways to accomplish this, I tried: a custom Node.js script; stunnel; node-spdyproxy (OK, this involves SPDY too, but later... the problem is the same); [...] The browser Then I run Google Chrome with: google-chrome --proxy-server=https://localhost:8080 http://superuser.com to load, say, http://superuser.com. The issue All I get is: Error 136 (net::ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID): Unknown error. in the window, and something like: [13633:13639:1017/182333:ERROR:cert_verify_proc_nss.cc(790)] CERT_PKIXVerifyCert for localhost failed err=-8179 in the console. Note: this is not the big red warning that complains about insecure certificates. Now, I have to admit that I'm quite n00b for what concerns certificates and such, if I'm missing some fundamental points, please let me know.

• Is it possible to change "working directory" of XeTeX?

  Using XeTeX there are many working files that get created in process of producing the pdf, and they litter the directory where my main .tex file is. Is it possible to change the working directory of XeTeX so that it stores all these scratch files in some other directory, out of the way? There is a previous question on Superuser.com that discusses a utility that cleans up the working files by deleting them after they're produced: http://superuser.com/questions/95712/how-to-avoid-littering-ones-tex-directories-with-intermediate-files That solution doesn't work for me since I'm using XeTeX, but also it seems like it would be preferable to simply be able to designate a "scratch" directory where all working files are saved. I haven't been able to find any info on how to do it though. Is there a way? (My question is prompted partly because of the fact that I often work with files in a directory that is shared using DropBox, so it creates a lot of unnecessary traffic if files are getting created and destroyed willy nilly. I don't know if it affects speed in any way, but the idea of having a separate working directory that is not shared/replicated by DropBox would be a cleaner solution, even if I could use the method suggested in the earlier thread.)
