• A simple example of movement prediction

- by Daniel
I've seen lots of examples of theory about the reason for client-side prediction, but I'm having a hard time converting it into code. I was wondering if someone knows of some specific examples that share some of the code, or can share their knowledge to shed some light into my situation. I'm trying to run some tests to get a the movement going (smoothly) between multiple clients. I'm using mouse input to initiate movement. I'm using AS3 and C# on a local Player.IO server. Right now I'm trying to get the Client side working, as I'm only forwarding position info with the client. I have 2 timers, one is an onEnterFrame and the other is a 100ms Timer, and one on mouseClick listener. When I click anywhere with a mouse, I update my player class to give it a destination point On every enterFrame Event for the player, it moves towards the destination point At every 100ms it sends a message to the server with the position of where it should be in a 100ms. The distance traveled is calculated by taking the distance (in Pixels) that the player can travel in one second, and dividing it by the framerate for the onEnterFrame handler, and by the update frequency (1/0.100s) for the server update. For the other Players, the location is interpolated and animated on every frame based on the new location. Is this the right way of doing it?

• Storage of leftover values in a situation of having to round down

- by jt0dd
I'm writing an app (client and server side) where the number of sales required by each employee must be kept track of in round-number form. Each month, the employees are required to sell a certain number, and this app needs to keep track of how many sales must be made for each 12 hour interval during the work week. Because I have to round the values down to a whole number, I must keep track of leftovers in the rounding process and ensure that they are always carried over. My method must ensure the storage of the leftover value even when client and server side crash, restart, close, etc. Right now, I'm working on doing this by storing the leftovers in a field in the user's account row in the database each time a value is rounded, reading the stored value, removing any portion that is used (when a whole number is reached, most of the leftover is used up), and storing the new value. This practice seems weird because while the leftovers are calculated on the client side, it's the same number for each employee, and every employee using the app is storing a copy of the same leftover data. Alternatively, I could have all clients store the data at once into the same data field on a general table, but this is just as weird. Is there a better way that this can be handled or is my method correct?

• Client-server application design issue

- by user2547823
I have a collection of clients on server's side. And there are some objects that need to work with that collection - adding and removing clients, sending message to them, updating connection settings and so on. They should perform these actions simultaneously, so mutex or another synchronization primitive is required. I want to share one instance of collection between these objects, but all of them require access to private fields of collection. I hope that code sample makes it more clear[C++]: class Collection { std::vector< Client* > clients; Mutex mLock; ... } class ClientNotifier { void sendMessage() { mLock.lock(); // loop over clients and send message to each of them } } class ConnectionSettingsUpdater { void changeSettings( const std::string& name ) { mLock.lock(); // if client with this name is inside collection, change its settings } } As you can see, all these classes require direct access to Collection's private fields. Can you give me an advice about how to implement such behaviour correctly, i.e. keeping Collection's interface simple without it knowing about its users?

• Webservice complex types and class inheritance

- by pygorex1
Using the following Webservice definition using aClientArgs as a complex type: [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService] public class Controller : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod] public void save_client(aClientArgs client) { // Save client data } } Then defining aClientArgs as a sub-class: public class aArgs { public string id = null; public string name = null; } public class aClientArgs : aArgs { public string address = null; public string website = null; } Returns the following WSDL fragment for the save_client args: <save_client xmlns="http://tempuri.org/"> <client>
string
<website>string</website> </client> </save_client> When I'm expecting the following: <save_client xmlns="http://tempuri.org/"> <client>

string
<website>string</website> </client> </save_client> So it appears that the .NET WebService is not treating inherited properties as arguments/variables for purposes of a web service. How do I get .NET to also use the properties of the base class?

• Ensure exclusive access to webservice

Just to be on the safe side, what's the best practice to ensure that only my application has access to my webservice, which is hosted on a public server? Should I implement I shared key or something? My webservice is hosted on Googles App Engine and my Application runs on iPhones and iPads. If you need further information, just ask. Thanks, Henrik

- by mouthpiec
Hi, I have an application that when executed as a windows application works fine, but when converted to a webservice, in some instances (which were tested succesfully) by the windows app) creates a stackoverflow. Do you have an idea of what can cause this? (Note that it works fine when the webservice is placed on the localhost).

• Adding Client-Side events to DevExpress ASP.Net controls

- by nikolaosk
I have been involved in a ASP.Net project recently and I have implemented it using the awesome DevExpress ASP.Net controls. In this post I would like to show you how to use the client-side events that can make the user experience of your web application for the end user much better. We do avoid unnecessary page flickering and postbacks. All this functionality is possible through the magic of Ajax and Javascript.I am not going to cover Ajax and Javascript on this post. With the DevExpress ASP.net controls...(read more)

Hey all, I came across a thread entitled How To Stop A Developer From Stealing Your Business Idea and i can't help but raise a brow. The issue talks about a developer being able to pass on the idea to another and benefit from it. As a developer, what is the best way to assure your client that you will not steal his ideas? Are there any practices, laws or anything that takes care of the interests of both sides? edit: linked to thread, and i didnt understand everything that was said

• Calling a .net webservice from a plain HTML site using jQuery

- by pwee167
Hi guys, I wanted to know it is possible to call a hosted .net web service from a HTML page using jQuery? I tried this piece of code, but it doesn't work for me: $('#myForm').click(function() { $.ajax({ type: "POST", data: '{}', url: "http://localhost:49590/Service.asmx?op=HelloWorld", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(response) { alert(response.d); }, failure: function(result) { alert(result.status + ' ' + result.statusText); } }); }); And the webservice is as such: [WebService(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/")] [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)] [System.ComponentModel.ToolboxItem(false)] // To allow this Web Service to be called from script, using ASP.NET AJAX, uncomment the following line. [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService] public class Service : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod] public string HelloWorld() { return "Hello World"; } } I have searched for this and found only examples where it is done from asp.net or asp.net mvc projects. I am not sure what I am missing but I thought this was possible from a plain HTML site with javascript, so can someone please point me in the right direction. Cheers!

• ASP.NET webservice API security.

- by Tejaswi Yerukalapudi
Hi, I have an iPhone app accessing an ASP.NET Webservice for data. Since I'm building both the ASP.NET end and the iPhone part of the app, and we'll shortly be publishing it in the Appstore, I'd like to know what security checks I need to make. The basic flow of the program (without divulging too much info about it) is as follows - . Login (Enter Username, pass on the app) . Primary screen where the data is loaded from a webservice and presented . And post data back after a few updates by the user I'm using POST to send the data to the Webservice via HTTPS. I'm sanitizing the inputs, checking for length of the inputs, but that's the limit of my knowledge as far as security goes. Any other tips are greatly appreciated! Edit: I should probably add that our service needs to be subscribed to separately and the iPhone component of it cannot be used alone. So the average user will not have login credentials. And the app itself has healthcare data in it, so I'd rather not have anyone trying attacks from my login page. Thanks, Teja.

• Consuming C# Webservice

- by Debby
Hi, I have a simple webservice running and I have a console application client consuming the service. I did have issues getting this running and I had been helped by some wonderful people in this community. I have another problem, if i want to call the service from the client in a loop, it doesnt work. It works only for the first time and then it just keeps waiting. Why is this happening and how can I resolve it. The code: namespace WebService { [ServiceContract] public interface IService { [OperationContract(Name="Result")] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "/")] Stream Result(); } public class Service:IService { public Stream Result() { // read a file from the server and return it as stream } } } The client: namespace WebServiceClient { [ServiceContract] public interface IService { [OperationContract(Name="Result")] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "/")] Stream Result(); } } static void Main() { Console.WriteLine("Press enter when the service is available"); Console.ReadLine(); // creating factory HttpChunkingBinding binding = new HttpChunkingBinding(); binding.MaxReceivedMessageSize = 0x7fffffffL; ChannelFactory<WebServiceClient.IService> factory = new ChannelFactory<WebServiceClient.IService> (binding, new EndpointAddress("http://localhost/WebService/Service")); WebServiceClient.IService service = factory.CreateChannel(); for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Stream s = service.Result(); // write this stream to a file and close the stream } //Closing our channel. ((IClientChannel)service).Close(); } Thanks,

• Bind WCF webservice to specific network interface / IP

- by Markus
On a machine with multiple network cards I need to bind a WCF webservice to a specific network interface. It seems that the default is to bind on all network interfaces. The machine has two network adapters with the IPs 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11. I have an Apache running that binds on 192.168.0.10:80 and need to run the webservice on 192.168.0.11:80. (Due to external circumstances I cannot choose another port.) I tried the following: string endpoint = "http://192.168.0.11:80/SOAP"; ServiceHost = new ServiceHost(typeof(TService), new Uri(endpoint)); ServiceHost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(TContract), Binding, ""); // or: ServiceHost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(TContract), Binding, endpoint); But it doesn't work; netstat -ano -p tcp always shows the webservice listening on 0.0.0.0:80, which is all interfaces (if I got that correct). When I start Apache first, it correctly binds to the other interface, which in turn prevents the WCF service to bind to "all". Any ideas?

• Choosing a method for a webservice

- by Wrikken
I'm asked to set up a new webservice which should be easily usable in whatever language (php, .NET, Java, etc.) possible. Of course rolling my own can be done, accepting different content-types (xml / x-www-form-urlencoded (normal post) / json / etc.), but an existing method or mechanism would of course be prefered, cutting down time spent on development for the consumers of the service. The webservice does accept modifications / sets (it is not only simply data retrieval), but those will most likely be quite a lot less then gets (we estimate about 2.5% sets, 97.5 gets). The term webservice here indicates the protocol should go over HTTP, not being able to implement it totally client sided (javascript in the end-users browser etc.), as it needs specific user authentication. Both gets and sets are pretty light on the parameter count (usually 1 to 4). Methods like REST (which I'd prefer for only gets), XML-RPC & SOAP (might be a bit overkill, but has the advantage of explicitly defined methods and returns) are the usual suspects. What in your opinion / experience is the most widely 'spoken' and most easily implementable protocol in different languages (seen from the consumers' viewpoint) which could fullfill this need?

• "(401)Authorization Required" when making a web service call using Axis

- by Arun P Johny
Hi, I'm using apache axis to connect to my sugar crm instance. When I'm trying to connect to the instance it is throwing the following exception Exception in thread "main" AxisFault faultCode: {http://xml.apache.org/axis/}HTTP faultSubcode: faultString: (401)Authorization Required faultActor: faultNode: faultDetail: {}:return code: 401 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>401 Authorization Required</title> </head><body> <h1>Authorization Required</h1> <p>This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. The same code is working fine in my testing environment. Sugarsoap service = new SugarsoapLocator(); SugarsoapPortType port = service.getsugarsoapPort(new java.net.URL( SUGAR_CRM_LOCATION + "/soap.php")); System.out.println(port.get_server_info().getVersion()); User_auth userAuth = new User_auth(); userAuth.setUser_name("user_name"); MessageDigest md = MessageDigest.getInstance("MD5"); String password = getHexString(md.digest("password".getBytes())); userAuth.setPassword(password); // userAuth.setVersion("0.1"); Entry_value login = port.login(userAuth, "myAppName", null); String sessionID = login.getId(); Above code is used to connect to the Sugar CRM installation. here line "System.out.println(port.get_server_info().getVersion());" is throwing the exception. One difference I noticed between the test and production environment is when I used the soap url in the browser the production site pops up a 'Authentication Required' popup. When I gives my proxy username and password in this popup, it shows the soap request details. The same is applicable for the login url also. First it will ask for the 'Authentication' then it will take to the sugar crm login page? Is it a server security setting? If it is then how to set this user name and password using java in a web service call. The authentication required popup is same as the one which comes when we try to access the tomcat manager through a browser. Thanks

• AJAX Requests & Client-Side JavaScript

- by Sarah24
I am new to AJAX and trying to understand a question I've been given: A HTTP request is generated by a form which contains some drop-down list. When the form is submitted, a new web page is displayed with some relevant text information (which is dependent on the list item selected). Now, the same parameters are sent to the server via an AJAX request, and the same text information is returned. Q. What tasks would the client-side JavaScript have to do to ensure a valid request was constructed and sent? Any useful links or quick explanations greatly appreciated.

• Delivering estimates and client expectations?

- by FishOrDie
When a client asks for an estimate on how long it would take to develop different sections of an app, is it best to give them a total amount or what it would take for each section? Is it better/more common to give a range of hours/days or just a single number? Do you think most clients feel that if a programmer says it should take 50 hours that they should be billed for 50 hours? If I say it would take 50 and it actually takes 60, do I tell them in advance that I'm going over on my estimate or just charge what was originally quoted?
