    What's the difference between VMWare Player vs Workstation? Is it that Player is for non-commercial use and workstation isn't? For someone who builds and tests applications at home for non-commercial use, is it worth paying for a Workstation license? Do I get any benefits over Player? (Note: I realize there's open source solutions like VirtualBox, but am more interested in the differences between Player and Workstation.) Thanks!

  • VMWare workstation: from command line, how to start a VM in service mode (run in background)?

    Hi, I have tried the vmrun and vmware.exe executables, but both of them start the vmware GUI when starting the VM. What I want to do is start the VM without starting the VMWare GUI. The reason I am doing this is after a few hours of idle, the guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. So far the command I use are: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstationvmrun stop F:\VirtualMachines\R2\R2.vmx C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstationvmrun start F:\VirtualMachines\R2\R2.vmx But the start command actually starts the VMWare Workstation GUI, which I don't need. I'm looking for a solution to start the VM without the VMWare Wokstation GUI, or a solution to what is causing the VM to become sluggish after a few hours of running idle.

    I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

  • Why do I get a My Disney window when installing VMWare Workstation?

    I'm assuming this is a virus, though my virus checker can't find it. I downloaded the latest vmware workstation 7 installer. I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I go to install it, and the installer window is a Disney website. Upon further investigation, what's happening is that the vmware installer extracts/writes a bunch of files to a temp directory. One of those files is an index.htm file. When I open it, sure enough it's the Disney file. I used sysinternals Process Monitor to look for anything fishy, but the only thing I see touching that index.htm file is the vmware installer and explorer.exe

  • Will SSD degrade when running VMWare Workstation from SSD?

    My main OS (Windows 7 or 8) is runned from SSD. I'd want to run Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 using VMWare workstation. I've heard that VMWare doesn't support TRIM and other things to optimize SSD usage. So SSD will quickly degrade if VM will be runned from SSD. Will it be better to put guest OS's files (.vmdk and the rest) to external HDD (connected through USB 2 or 3) instead of SSD? What advantages and disadvantages it will give? What if VM will be put to internal HDD? At what drive type performance of VM will be better?

  • VMware Workstation "Power off" and "Suspend" buttons are disabled. What is going on?

    I've been using an XP image for a few months now with no problems. Recently the power off and resume buttons were disabled and I'm not sure what happened to cause that. In addition, the menu items to do those functions are grayed out (like VM | Power | Power Off) I'm using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on a Windows 7 64-bit host. The image is Windows XP 32-bit. There is plenty of free space and memory on the host and the CPU is not pegged. I am able to power off the image through its Start menu, but that's a workaround not a fix. Any suggestions? TIA EDIT: Well after manually shutting down the image then closing and reopening the image file (which I've done before) in preparation for reinstalling the tools as suggested below, it looks fine. The power off and suspend buttons are enabled and work. So what do I do with this question now? "Close and restart a few times and it may work" doesn't seem useful...

I installed it but when i run it, it shows this window: But, when I press on "Browse", this window comes up Even if I select the linux-headers-3.8.0-31-generic folder, it says that it can't find the C headers for that kernel. Why? P.S. I already tried sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.8.0-31-generic and the terminal says that the kernel is up to date.

  • RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

    I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist.   • Connect server to router with workstation in between?

    I have a server (9 yr old Dell with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition) and a workstation (Laptop with Vista) which are both connected to a router. The workstation is able to access the server via web browser for testing my web development projects. Since the server is old and does not have a wireless card, I am wondering if it is possible to connect the server directly to the workstation while maintaining the ability to connect to the server from the workstation. The reason is that the computers are in a separate room from the router and I am trying to limit the amount of wires on the floor, along with trying to avoid buying more hardware (like a wireless card).     I successfully encrypted a VM image and confirmed it still runs. I then closed the VM and reopened it and confirmed the encryption password was valid and worked. However, now I want to un-encrypt the VM. When I choose that option, it asks for "your password". I assume this means the password I created when I encrypted it. It doesn't work. I can still open the VM with the password and run it. But, it refuses to remove the encryption using that password. Am I missing something? Is there a password that I don't know about? Some details: I created this image (using standalone converter; physical machine source) I converted it to ACE Converted back to a normal VM (un-ACE'd it) Encrypted it Cannot remove the encryption but can open it and run it As you can see... It will be running a few VMWare Worksation virtual machines - A dev machine running VS-2010, a build machine, a version-control machine, a web server for testing, a "personal" machine running office etc. I'll be connecting the computer to my stereo, so I'll also be running iTunes (possible on a dedicated VM) and I want the computer to be a silent one. So, my question is as follows: In terms of heat, noise, reliability, warranty, price, capacity and performance, what would you suggest: A Raid10 4 disk array using eco-friendly disks such as the $94 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green, or one high performance disk such as the 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black at $280?

  • How to manage several Linux workstation like a cluster?

    How does one go about managing a lab of Linux workstations? I'd like for users to be able to log in, run their GUI apps (LibreOffice, Firefox, Eclipse, etc), and for the computers to be able to be used as compute nodes (OpenMPI). This part I'm fine with. But how can I centrally deploy a new software package or upgrade an installed package? How can I reload the entire OS on a given node, as if these workstations were part of a super computing cluster? Is there a nice program to help with setting up PXE booting and image management, and remotely managing packages? Ideally such a system would work with Ubuntu. If there isn't a nice package, how could this be set up manually?
