    Looking for a stepped-up ALIX or Soekris embedded network appliance to load pfSense and/or handle other FOSS-based network roles. Main criteria is a GbE NICs (will be used for core routing/firewalling with managed GbE switches), DDR3 RAM capable, and multi-core/Intel Atom processor, in a 1U rack-mountable case or smaller. Axiomtek has the ideal product but I don't think they have retail channels.

    I'm currently an running a quad core processor on windows 7 and was wondering if there is a way to turn off unneeded cpu cores while I'm running on battery to extend battery life it would be nice to do this automatically but will also accept way to it manually if there is no way to do it automatically either in windows or through management software I've searched on the internet and haven't been able to find anything to this effect on google

    Ok, so I was reading through the AMD64 manuels and knowing that nop is really an xchg eax, eax, I looked at the xchg and found something interesting, that it seems a byte can be encoded into the instruction for specifying the registers (apologies I'm on my iPod): picture. So what I am wondering is how does the processor know if there is a byte after to work with or is it that that extra register has to be of type rAX causing it to actually still be the one byte 0x90

The first instruction of BIOS is jump, which jumps to the main BIOS program, but where does it jump? Where does the original BIOS code originate? I'm also interested in POST? How are POST signals executed by the processor?

    I'm gonna spec a new computer, used for running VMWare Worksation. The computer will be running a few virtual machines - A dev machine running VS-2010, a build machine, a version-control machine, a web server for testing, a "personal" machine running office etc. Any suggestions? Processor, MB, disks etc? (P.S. The only item I AM sure of is that the machine will be using a Xonar Essence Stx, connected to my NAND amplifier ;-)

  • What Linux distro should I install on an old PowerPC Mac?

    I'm trying to set up my brother–who has a PPC Mac with 1 GHz processor and 256 MB RAM–with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this Mac, they also know that support has faded for the latest browsers, rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web. Ideally I would have installed Jolicloud, but alas, it is only Intel Mac compatible... Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me!

I'm on a mac osx 10.7.2 Processor 2.26 GHz intel core 2 due I downloaded: mysql-5.5.18-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I'm now at the point of setting the root password and when I type in: sudo: mysql_secure_installation it asks me to enter my password, then it says: sudo: mysql_secure_installation: command not found Any help would be appreciated.   • Computer suddenly dies; screen displays weird flickering lines, then restarts

    I've been having this terrible problem for a little while and just managed to get a picture of 'dead screen' for the first time and I am posting it to seek help. Randomly, at irregular intervals (typically once a week), while working on something (it's been different things every time) my computer will just suddenly go dead - the screen turns to exactly the picture below (the lines flicker a little bit), it hangs there for a few seconds and then restarts. Obviously this is extremely frustrating and I want to try to stop it. I've searched numerous postings with similar keywords but nothing exactly the same as mine. Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause of this? I would post all my system settings and installed programs but the list is long and I don't know how much relevance each item would be. If you'd like to know something specific, please comment and I'll let you know whatever you need.     My laptop has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. I've connected: mouse -- USB 2.0 port keyboard -- USB 3.0 port On starting the system, the mouse is active however the keyboard does not function. Everytime i have to disconnect the keyboard and plug it back in and only then it becomes active. Is there any fix to this problem or is the USB port itself faulty? specs: Dell XPS, 64-bit i7 processor with 8G of RAM
