• Picking the right license

  Hey, I have some trouble with picking the right license for my works. I have a few requirements: Not copyleft like the GNU (L)GPL and allows for redistribution under other licenses Allows other people to redistribute your (modified) work but prevents that other people freely make money off my work (they need to ask/buy a commercial license if they want to) Compatible with the GNU (L)GPL Not responsible for any damage caused by my work Now, I wrote my own little license based on the BSD and CC Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 licenses, but I am not sure if it will hold in court. • Installation causing broken packages

  Here I come I am so determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot). When I got it I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev but doesn't help, only makes life complicated. What the *#$%&!!! I don't want to be forced to become a computer scientist just to be able to use a free source os. P.s. the sound stopped working

• Moving domain currently on Google Apps to my own machines

  I own a domain which currently uses Google Apps (it was free back then). Due to recent events I have decided I want to move everything right where I can control the data, which basically means I have the idea of either using a dyndns solution and have at home my own mail server or, better, use an hosted machine to retrieve the mail and the move it via mua to a local machine. My problem is that I know basically next to nothing about DNS and stuff, while I have installed mail servers before. :) [I simply never had the need to work with DNS...] I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction: what do I need to do to: terminate the Google Apps management of the domain setup dns entries to that mail goes to the new server instead of Google Apps Additionally: if I decide to go the "hosted route" and I put up a machine via a supercheap hosting seller (say, the cheapest OVH one is a few euros a month), how can I tell the world that that machine is the mail server? Of course I would be wise to do a full backup of the mail on Google Apps, and that's easy enough to do by imap (right?).

• Styling ASP.NET MVC Error Messages

That’s not the case, though. You actually have quite a number of options with regard to styling those boogers. Like many of the helpers in MVC, the Html.ValidationMessageFor helper has multiple prototypes. One of those prototypes lets you pass a dictionary, or anonymous object, representing attribute values for the resulting markup. @Html.ValidationMessageFor( m => Model.Whatever, null, new { @class = “my-error” }) By passing the htmlAttributes parameter, which is the last parameter in the call to the prototype of Html.ValidationMessageFor shown above, I can style the resulting markup by associating styles to the my-error css class.  When you run your MVC project and view the source, you’ll notice that MVC adds the class field-validation-valid or field-validation-error to a span created by the helper. You could actually just style those classes instead of adding your own…it’s really up to you. Now, what if you wanted to move that error message around? Maybe you want to put that error message in a box or a callout. How do you do that? When I first started using MVC, it didn’t occur to me that the Html.ValidationMessageFor helper just spits out a little bit of markup. I wanted to put the error messages in boxes with white backgrounds, our site originally had a black background, and show a little nib on the side to make them look like callouts or conversation bubbles. Not realizing how much freedom there is in the styling and markup, and after reading someone else’s post, I created my own version of the ValidationMessageFor helper that took out the span and replaced it with divs. I styled the divs to produce the effect of a popup box and had a lot of trouble with sizing and such. That’s a really silly and unnecessary way to solve this problem. If you want to move your error messages around, all you have to do is move the helper. MVC doesn’t appear to care where you put it, which makes total sense when you think about it. Html.ValidationMessageFor is just spitting out a little markup using a little bit of reflection on the name you’re passing it. All you’ve got to do to style it the way you want it is to put it in whatever markup you desire. Take a look at this, for example… <div class=”my-anchor”>@Html.ValidationMessageFor( m => Model.Whatever )</div> @Html.TextBoxFor(m => Model.Whatever) Now, given that bit of HTML, consider the following CSS… <style> .my-anchor { position:relative; } .field-validation-error {    background-color:white;    border-radius:4px;    border: solid 1px #333;    display: block;    position: absolute;    top:0; right:0; left:0;    text-align:right; } </style> The my-anchor class establishes an anchor for the absolutely positioned error message. Now you can move the error message wherever you want it relative to the anchor. Using css3, there are some other tricks. For example, you can use the :not(:empty) selector to select the span and apply styles based upon whether or not the span has text in it. Keep it simple, though. Moving your elements around using absolute positioning may cause you issues on devices with screens smaller than your standard laptop or PC. While looking for something else recently, I saw someone asking how to style the output for Html.ValidationSummary.  Html.ValidationSummery is the helper that will spit out a list of property errors, general model errors, or both. Html.ValidationSummary spits out fairly simple markup as well, so you can use the techniques described above with it also. The resulting markup is a <ul><li></li></ul> unordered list of error messages that carries the class validation-summary-errors In the forum question, the user was asking how to hide the error summary when there are no errors. Their errors were in a red box and they didn’t want to show an empty red box when there aren’t any errors. Obviously, you can use the css3 selectors to apply different styles to the list when it’s empty and when it’s not empty; however, that’s not support in all browsers. Well, it just so happens that the unordered list carries the style validation-summary-valid when the list is empty. While the div rendered by the Html.ValidationSummary helper renders a visible div, containing one invisible listitem, you can always just style the whole div with “display:none” when the validation-summary-valid class is applied and make it visible when the validation-summary-errors class is applied. Or, if you don’t like that solution, which I like quite well, you can also check the model state for errors with something like this… int errors = ViewData.ModelState.Sum(ms => ms.Value.Errors.Count); That’ll give you a count of the errors that have been added to ModelState. You can check that and conditionally include markup in your page if you want to. The choice is yours. Obviously, doing most everything you can with styles increases the flexibility of the presentation of your solution, so I recommend going that route when you can. • Oracle NoSQL Database: Cleaner Performance

  In an earlier post I noted that Berkeley DB Java Edition cleaner performance had improved significantly in release 5.x. From an Oracle NoSQL Database point of view, this is important because Berkeley DB Java Edition is the core storage engine for Oracle NoSQL Database. Many contemporary NoSQL Databases utilize log based (i.e. append-only) storage systems and it is well-understood that these architectures also require a "cleaning" or "compaction" mechanism (effectively a garbage collector) to free up unused space. 10 years ago when we set out to write a new Berkeley DB storage architecture for the BDB Java Edition ("JE") we knew that the corresponding compaction mechanism would take years to perfect. "Cleaning", or GC, is a hard problem to solve and it has taken all of those years of experience, bug fixes, tuning exercises, user deployment, and user feedback to bring it to the mature point it is at today. Reports like Vinoth Chandar's where he observes a 20x improvement validate the maturity of JE's cleaner. Cleaner performance has a direct impact on predictability and throughput in Oracle NoSQL Database. A cleaner that is too aggressive will consume too many resources and negatively affect system throughput. A cleaner that is not aggressive enough will allow the disk storage to become inefficient over time. It has to Work well out of the box, and Needs to be configurable so that customers can tune it for their specific workloads and requirements. The JE Cleaner has been field tested in production for many years managing instances with hundreds of GBs to TBs of data. The maturity of the cleaner and the entire underlying JE storage system is one of the key advantages that Oracle NoSQL Database brings to the table -- we haven't had to reinvent the wheel.

• Doing a mysql dump causes swapping issues

  I do a mysqldump manually every night. I just noticed that after it is done and I try to access the website it is very slow. After I take a look at the free -mh I notice that the server is now swapping when it otherwise wasn't before the mysqldump. What am I to do in this case? Just restart the server every time I backup? That doesn't seem very effective. My database file raw is 1.1gb after the dump.

• canvas tile grid, hover effects, single tilesheet, etc

  I'm currently in the process of building both the client and server side of an html5, canvas, and WebSocket game. This is what I have thus far for the client: http://jsfiddle.net/dDmTf/7/ Current obstacles The hover effect has no idea what to put back after the mouse leaves. Currently it's just drawing a "void" tile, but I can't figure out how to redraw a single tile without redrawing the whole map. How would I go about storing multiple layers within the map variable? I was considering just using a multi-dimensional array for each layer (similar to what you see as the current array), and just iterating through it, but is that really an efficient way of doing it? Side note The tile sheet being used for the jsfiddle display is only for development. I'll be replacing it as things progress in the engine. I hope you can help! Hopefully you guys can help me, I've been struggling to get through things, since I'm learning how things kind of stuff works as I go. If you guys have any pointers for my JavaScript, feel free. As I'm more or less learning advanced usage as I go, I'm sure I'm doing plenty of things wrong. Note: I will continue to update this post as the engine improves, but updating the jsfiddle link and updating the obstacles list by striking things that have been solved, or adding additions. • Hard time installing Ubuntu

  I have a MSI GT780DXR that currently is booting windows 7. I've been trying to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu for some time now. Here's specs that I think would make a difference Windows 7 500GB*2 RAID 0 hard drives. (Hardware RAID I'm not sure if it's a dedicated RAID card though) 7200RPM Nvidia GT570M Background: I tried to install 12.04 (64 bit) a few times but the Desktop live cd and pendrive boots with a black screen. I've tried wubi but it boots to a black screen as well. I then tried the alternative 12.04 (64 bit) and went through the installation all the way til partitioning. I let Ubuntu notice the raid setup and I setup my swap, /, and home drives, I used my free space to create the three partitions. I tried to resize the windows drive and it told me I couldn't and to be happy with my current setup. When I finally got past I got an error on installing GRUB 2 and decided to skip it and continued on to finish installation. When I tried to boot up I got an invalid partition table error. Windows recovery disc, and a GPARTED live cd couldn't find any hard drives. I ended up following advice and typed this into the recovery command prompt. bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildBcd It worked and here I am now. The question is, how would I be able to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 with this information? Thanks,

  I have a programming background, and I've done lots of database design and written lots of queries with Sql Server. I am really excited about looking at bigdata solutions. I know almost nothing about it. The way I want to learn is to sign up for a sandbox where I can try things out. questions Is there a sandbox where I can play around with hadoop? It does not have to be free. Would amazon EMR be the right path to go? What technologies should I be looking at to get started quickly? Is there a 'bigdata' dataset that is available to play with? • Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari - hangs up on start

  I have a strange problem on Windows Vista (Automatic updates). Long time ago I had installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari and Opera and they all worked well. Once upon a time, after Windows restart, Firefox, Thunderbird and Safari won't start. [Opera (USB) works fine]. When I start the browser, program name is listed on the processes list, but it is not activated, doesn't show any window. I tried crating new profiles with -ProfileManager, restarting Windows, reinstalling the browsers. I scanned the system for suspected programs and it looks clean. There is 45GB of free HDD space. WTF?

• Volume Shadow Copy based backup that works with TrueCrypt?

  I have enabled whole-drive encryption on my external drive to comply with my company's requirements about data security. I want to be able to make a backup of files on the drive, even while they're in use. Is there any program out there that uses Volume Shadow Copy for backup and also works with a TrueCrypt encrypted drive? I have tried Windows Backup and Macrium Reflect and both act like the drive isn't connected, even though TrueCrypt has mounted it. It would be really nice if there was something that was free, but in order for that to work, it also has to work for commercial purposes since this is my company laptop I'm trying to backup.

• Remote desktop solution for controlling a remote OS X machine in Linux

  The "server" (the host I'm trying to connect to) is Snow Leopard. The "client" is Ubuntu 10.04. I want something like a remote desktop server running on OS X that I can connect to and control from the Linux machine. Something cheap or free would be best. Something that always runs on the OS X machine so that I never have to attach a monitor or a keyboard. I don't want to use VNC, because, well, VNC sucks over this network. Any ideas?

• How would you measure the amount of atmospheric dust in a server room?

  We've been advised by our tape library vendor that one of the reasons we might be seeing lots of errors is if our server room is particularly dusty. It doesn't look dusty, but that's not to say it's not there. We've got an environment sensor cluster which measures Temperature, Airflow and Relative Humidity. I should probably point out that the low-hanging fruit solution I came up with is to use Sellotape (scotch tape) in a loop, one side stuck to the server cabinet, the other side free-hanging. I've also put a couple of other tape loops by the exit and intake fans of the hardware (not blocking airflow, naturally). How can we (electronically, ideally) measure dust levels?

• How much RAM 64bit Windows 8 reserves to OS internal use?

  Windows reserves some memory for it's internal use which is not normally allocated to applications. This reserve is seen most easily if you run without a page file or limit the pagefile to relatively small size (such as 3GB). Windows will allocate primarily RAM up to the limit, fill up remaining free space in the page file (if any) and issue a low memory warning when there is no page file space left and the allocated RAM limit is exceeded. The limit appears to be a percentage of the total system RAM. Windows 7 x64 limit is discussed here and methods for circumventing the "low memory warning" is discussed here. Disabling the low memory warning has some advantages - You can use some 600MB more RAM on 8GB machine) But there is a serious disadvantage - When you're out of ram, programs will crash. How much RAM can you allocate on 8GB Windows 8 x64 before you get the low memory warning? Is it possible to adjust the warning threshold?

• Where have I been for the last month?

  So, I have been pretty quiet for the last month or so. True, it has been holiday time and I went to Cape Town for a stunning week of sunshine and blue skies, but the second I got back home I spent the remainder of my holiday on my pc viewing tutorials on www.tekpub.com Craig Shoemaker, who I got in contact with because of his podcast, sent me a 1 month free subscription to the site and it has been really appreciated. I have done a lot of WPF programming in the past, but not any asp.net stuff and so I used the time to get a peek at asp.net mvc2 as well as a bunch of other technologies. I just wished I had more spare time to do the rest of the videos. While I didn’t understand all of what was being shown on the asp.net stuff (it required previous asp.net expertise), the site was a really good jump start to someone wanting to learn a new technology and broaden the horizons and I would highly recommend it, My only gripe is that in South Africa we have limited bandwidth and bandwidth speeds and so I spent a lot of my monthly bandwidth on the site and had to top up with my ISP several times because of the high quality video captures that the site did. I would have preferred to download the video’s, but apparently that is only available to people who have the yearly subscription fee. Other than that, great site and thanks a ton Craig!

• The battery indicator in Unity panel not showing up

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with Wubi. Well after being completely dazzled with the amount of free content in the Software Centre, I decided to go deeper and start messing with settings. Well after changing the screen brightness the highest level I noticed that there wasn't an indicator for how much battery was left in my laptop. I looked up online on got 2 suggestions on how to fix: Right click on the Unity panel and add an indicator Set it to show in the power settings menu. Well I did both when I right click at the top menu nothing comes up and setting it to show does nothing either. Then I tried installing something in the Software Centre. I got something but when I activated it it said I had 0% power left even though I was charging and at %100 according the Light in the front of my laptop. So now I'm thinking that it doesn't even recognise my computer as a laptop which is weird because in the display settings it says my screen size is set to laptop. How can I install it? I don't know what version it is other then Ubuntu 12.04 and no matter what the icon does not appear with the

• Automatic driver search & update on Windows?

  I have a Dell laptop issued by my employer, and I always find it a real pain to search for, download and maintain their drivers. It baffles me that there does not seem to be a nice way (product, website, ...) to just download the stuff you need, without hassle. The same goes for the other Windows based laptops in my direct environment. Are there any (preferably free) automated solutions available? Or do you have a nice workflow - other than searching the manufacturers website - to help smoothing this process?

• Audio splitting and noise removal on Windows

  My mother has about 100 hours of audio in a mix of MP3 and WAV files, the digitized versions of her vinyl records. Each file contains about 5 songs with a few seconds of (noisy) pause between them. My mother needs software for Windows XP with which she can listen to the files, find the gaps manually, split the files at the gaps found, reduce noise on each song, and export the songs to individual MP3 files. My mother has very limited software user skills and affinity, and she doesn't speak English. The simpler the software, the better for her, even if noise reduction is worse than with a more sophisticated, but more complicated software. I'd prefer free software, freeware or shareware (which can do all above). Please recommend something much simpler than Audacity. The software should guide the user through the process, always showing the next few available steps, and being intuitive in the sense that there are only a few allowed actions and it's obvious what they are and how to activate them. Which software would you recommend?
