  Hello all! I have a few questions about jpa + spring integration running on tomcat, i've been looking fo some time and couldn't find any concrete answer, so here it goes: Is it possible to have spring to inject the JPA entityManager object into my DAO class without extending JpaDaoSupport? if yes, does spring manage the transaction in this case? • Problem with Apache Commons Id UUID Version 1 generation

  My problem is to generate version 1 UUIDs. We use Jetty 6.x, Maven (to start Jetty among other things) and Apache Commons ID (to generate UUID version 1 from the current time). Apache Commons ID requires a configuration file that is told to the JVM, using a parameter, e.g. 'org.apache.commons.id.uuid.config.resource.filename=commons-id-uuid.xml'. I checked the Apache Commons ID code and it tries to find the file from the classpath. Jetty's documentation states that WEB-INF/lib and WEB-INF/classes are in the classpath. The 'commons-id-uuid.xml' can be found from the deployed war file from the root of WEB-INF/classes directory but Jetty cannot load it: Message: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: commons-id-uuid.xml loaded as system resource is null Jetty was started using the following command: mvn jetty:run -Dorg.apache.commons.id.uuid.config.resource.filename=commons-id-uuid.xml Any idea what is going wrong? We just need to generate UUID version 1 identifiers. Any suggestions?

• How do you reconcile IDisposable and IoC?

  I'm finally wrapping my head around IoC and DI in C#, and am struggling with some of the edges. I'm using the Unity container, but I think this question applies more broadly. Using an IoC container to dispense instances that implement IDisposable freaks me out! How are you supposed to know if you should Dispose()? The instance might have been created just for you (and therefor you should Dispose() it), or it could be an instance whose lifetime is managed elsewhere (and therefor you'd better not). Nothing in the code tells you, and in fact this could change based on configuration!!! This seems deadly to me. Can any IoC experts out there describe good ways to handle this ambiguity?

• having issue while making the client calls persession in c# wcf

  1.) I have a main method Processing, which takes string as an arguments and that string contains some x number of tasks. 2.) I have another method Status, which keeps track of first method by using two variables TotalTests and CurrentTest. which will be modified every time with in a loop in first method(Processing). 3.) When more than one client makes a call parallely to my web service to call the Processing method by passing a string, which has different tasks will take more time to process. so in the mean while clients will be using a second thread to call the Status method in the webservice to get the status of the first method. 4.) when point number 3 is being done all the clients are supposed to get the variables(TotalTests,CurrentTest) parallely with out being mixed up with other client requests. 5.) The code that i have provided below is getting mixed up variables results for all the clients when i make them as static. If i remove static for the variables then clients are just getting all 0's for these 2 variables and i am unable to fix it. Please take a look at the below code. • Build Environment setup - Using .net, java, hudson, and ruby - Could really use a critique

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to stitch together a fast, repeatable, unbreakable build process for the following environment. I've got a plan for how to do it, but I'd really appreciate a critique. (I'd also appreciate some sample code, but more on that later) Ecosystem - Logical: Website - asp.net MVC 2, .net 3.5, Visual Studio 2010. IIS 6, Facebook iframe application application. This website/facebook app uses a few services. An internal search api, an internal read/write api, facebook, and an IP geolocation service. More details on these below Internal search api - .net, restful, built using old school .ashx handlers. The api uses lucene, and a sql server database behind the scenes. My project won't touch the lucene code, but does potentially touch the database and the web services. internal read/write api - java, restful, running on Tomcat Facebook web services A mocking site that emulates the internal read/write api, and parts of the facebook api Hudson - Runs unit tests on checkin, and creates some installers that behave inconsistently. Ecosystem - Physical: All of these machines can talk to one another, except for Hudson. Hudson can't see any of the target machines. So code must be pulled, rather than pushed. (Security thing) 1. Web Server - Holds the website, and the read/write api. (The api itself writes to a replicated sql server environment). 2. Search Server - Houses the search api. 3. Hudson Server - Does not have permissions to push to any environment. They have to pull. 4. Lucene Server 5. Database Server Problem I've been trying to set this site up to run in a stress environment, but the number of setup steps, the amount of time it takes to update a component, the black-box nature of the current installers, and the time it takes to generate data into the test system is absolutely destroying my productivity. I tweak one setting, have to redeploy, restart in a certain order, resetup some of the settings, and rebuild test data. Errors result in headscratching, and then basically starting over. Very bad. This problem is complicated further by my stress testing. I need to be able to turn on and off different external components, so that I can effectively determine the scalability of each piece. I've got strategies in place for how to do that for each dependency, but it further complicates my setup strategy, because now each component has 2 options. A mock version, or a real version. Configurations everywhere must be updated accordingly. Goals Fast - I want to drop this from a 20 minute exercise when things go perfectly, to a 3 minute one Stupid simple - I want to tell the environment what to do with as few commands as possible, and not have to remember how to stitch the environments together Repeatable - I want the script to be idempotent. Kind of a corollary to the Stupid Simple thing. The Plan So Far Here's what I've come up with so far, and what I've come looking for feedback on: Use VisualStudio's new web.config transformations to permit easily altering configs based on envrionment. This solution isn't really sufficient though. I will leave web.config set up to let the site run locally, but when deploying elsewhere, I have as many as 6 different possible outputs for the stress environment alone (because of the mocks of the various dependencies), let alone the settings for prod, QA, and dev. Each of these would then require it's own setup, or a setup that would then post-process the configs. So I'm currently leaning toward just having the dev version, and a version that converts key configuration values into a ruby string interpolation syntax. ({#VAR_NAME} kinda thing) Create a ruby script for each server that is essentially a bootstrapping script. That is to say, it will do nothing but load the ruby code that does the 'real' work from hudson/subversion, so that the script's functionality can evolve with the application, making it easy to build the site at any point in time by reference the appropriate version of the script. So in a nutshell, this script loads another script, and runs it. The 'real' ruby script will then accept commandline parameters that describe how the environment should look. From there, 1 configuration file can be used, and ruby will download the current installers, run them, post-process the configs, restart IIS/Tomcat, and kick off any data setup code that is needed. So that's it. I'm in a real time crunch to get this site stress-tested, so any feedback that you think could abbreviate the time this might take would be appreciated. That includes a shameless request for sample ruby code. I've not gotten too much further than puts "Hello World". :-) Just guidance would be helpful. Is this something that Rake would be useful for? How would you recommend I write tests for this animal? (I use interfaces and automocking frameworks to mock out things like http requests in .net. With ducktyping, it seems that this might be easier, but I don't know how to tell my code to use a fake duck in test, but a real one in practice) Thanks all.   Hi , I built an application in c# vs2005 .net . Everything works fine when i run the application in win 32 bit, But when running the application in win 64 it crashes while trying to call the pinvoke interlockedexchange(which is within the kernel32.dll) function . This is the exception : unable to find an entry point named 'interlockedexchange' I didnt find the interlockedexchange function within the kernel32.dll under system32 directory but it was found under the syswow64 directory(in the kernel32.dll) . I guess that the .net runtime is configured to the system32 directory and not to the syswow64 . How is it possible to change this configuration ? Can you think of any other problem that could cause this? any help would be appreciated! thanks , Miki Amit

  Profile that is used for ASP.NET Profile Service is not available in Page code behind files like in Page_Load. It may be just a problem with Visual Studio installation/configuration, but as another problem, classes placed in App_Code in not seen in page codes. Even when I'm adding new ASP.NET folder to my project, "App_Code" is not available as an option. I tested the entire scenario with ASP.NET Web Project and Empty ASP.NET Web Project. This problem does exists while creating ASP.NET Website. Environment: Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate x64, ASP.NET 4.0, Windows Server 2008 R2 x64. What may be the problem and how it can be solved?

When the entry shows up in my database (checking in myPhpAdmin) all of my double quotes and single quotes are escaped.   Hi, I have the following text: started: Project: ProjectA, Configuration: Release Any CPU ------ I would like to get just the actual project name which in this example is "ProjectA". I do have a regular expression "started:(\s)Project:(\s).*," which will give me "started: Project: ProjectA," and then I can use further basic string searching to return the project name but was wondering if there is any way I can just grab the actual project name without doing the extra string searching, maybe using a correct regular expression. What I need is the string value between boundaries "started: Project: " and ",". Any ideas?

• VS2008 on Win7 64-Bit: Debugging a Windows Service

  Hi all, I'm trying to debug a Windows Service using VS2008 on Win7 64-Bit. The problem I'm having is that none of my breakpoints are being hit, regardless of which build configuration I choose: x86, x64 or AnyCPU. Using "Attach to Process" after the service has started, none of the breakpoints are hit - yet the IDE doesn't inform me that they won't be hit (by making the solid red circle and outline, for instance) - it simply seems to act as if the breakpoints weren't even there. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thanks /Richard.

• Problem with Hyperic monitoring on CloudFoundry - frequent alerts

  Hi, I'm running single instance CloudFoundry configuration with one web application. I turned on Hyperic monitoring with notification for case of web app unavailability. Now I randomly receive alert emails (Subject "An alert has been triggered - Deployment myapp - context unavailable") that the application is not running, but it obviously is running fine. In access log of Apache I see two requests every 15 seconds: 127.0.0.1 - - [17/Mar/2010:15:37:33 +0100] "GET /server-status?auto HTTP/1.1" 200 438 "-" "Jakarta Commons-HttpClient/3.1" 127.0.0.1 - - [17/Mar/2010:15:37:33 +0100] "GET /myapp HTTP/1.1" 200 - "-" "Jakarta Commons-HttpClient/3.1" At the time when I get the alert emails, everything in log still seems to be fine - two requests. • Silverlight project builds in VS2008 but fails when using MSBuild

  Hi, We have 2 Silverlight projects in the same solution; SLGlobalResource and SLData. SLData references SLGlobalResource (using references add reference projects). When we build it in debug within VS2008, everything builds fine and all is good. But when we build it using: msbuild TheSolution.sln /p:Configuration=Debug /t:rebuild SLData fails with the following error: ViewModels\ImportViewModel.cs : error CS0246: The type of name space "SLGlobalResource" could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) This also happens in TeamCity (I guess because the TeamCity vs2008 runner uses MSBuild) Any ideas? Thanks Edit: There are actually 33 projects in total in the solution. I didn't think this was relevant before but now I'm thinking it could be - could this be a build order thing?

  I am looking for a way to embed a blog engine into my own application and I am too curious about Blog Engine algorithm. This may not be the correct place to ask but, How is that possible to store blog entry data in an XML file like BlogEngine.Net with Default Configuration. It must be getting slower everyday while the file is getting larger and larger. I am wondering the algorithm behind that. Is it loading with a different way ? Or Am I wrong with the time estimation ? I know it is open source but I thought it would be better to see a discussion here for some others might be thinking the same and this thread can be a reference.

• Supporting multiple versions without separate builds in JavaME

  I want to be able to support multiple versions of Java ME without having to have multiple builds. I already know how to detect the profile/configuration/supported JSRs. My problem is that knowing whether the JSR is supported at run time doesn't allow me to use all the features. For if I call a function added in a later version anywhere in the code - even a location that will never be run, then this will be a compilation error due to static typing. Is there any way round this?

• Mysql out of disk space

  I have just finished developing a rails app which has a mysql db as a backend. The app is meant for high traffic and will store lots of information. I am planning to set up my own web server and host the site from it. If in future my disk space runs out i would want to expand by adding more space. But say if my mysql database is housed in my /disk0s1 and by adding a new drive i have more partitions (and hence more disk space), how then would i extend my database to store information on those partitions too, and at the same time prevent any information from being written on the original partition. Should i go for multiple databases? if so how? If i went for a hosting solution i wouldn't be bothering about this as i would just have to worry about making payments for the extra space :) I always wondered how space is added on-the-go by these webhosts. Is there any specific mysql configuration that i have to make?

My question is if we can save the items on ListCtrl so everytime someone opens the application, the items are there and if the user removes it, it also removes from the configuration. I know that I can use wx.Config and I'm trying to accomplish using that but I don't know how to read it in a way to accomplish what I want. So what I would like to know is a proper way to write/read the wx.Config in a way that everytime someone opens the application, the items from ListCtrl are there. Thanks in advance.
