  • UnsupportedOperationException on Collection

    - by Duke Vador
While studying the Collection API, we find that some methods (add, remove,...) may throw a java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException if the current implementation of the Collection does not support those functionalities. Is there, actually, in the JDK, a concrete Collection that does not support those methods ? Thanks a lot for your answers.

  • Are there localization tools which spot content strings in xaml/wpf?

    - by Noel Kennedy
When globalizing a wpf application with static resx classes, it's very easy to miss the odd label or button that has its Content property set to a hard coded string in a particular language, ie English. These should of course be moved off to a {x:Static ...} so they can be localised for each culture. Are there any tools which can spot this and warn you? Built in to VS would be ideal, but I'm thinking that 'style cop' type build tools would do the job as well.

  • Is there a suitable replacement for C++, when I would like to write video processing applications?

    - by Nisanio
Hi I want to write a video editing software, and the "logical" conclusion is that the language I must to use is C++... But I don't like it (sorry c++ fans) I would like to write it with something cool, like Lisp or Haskell or Erlang... But I don't know if the open source implementation of those languages (I don't have money to buy licenses) let me made a competitive software (in the performance area) What do you think? what do you recommend?

  • How to infer the type of a derived class in base class?

    - by enzi
I want to create a method that allows me to change arbitrary properties of classes that derive from my base class, the result should look like this: SetPropertyValue("size.height", 50); – where size is a property of my derived class and height is a property of size. I'm almost done with my implementation but there's one final obstacle that I want to solve before moving on, to describe this I will first have to explain my implementation a bit: Properties that can be modified are decorated with an attribute There's a method in my base class that searches for all derived classes and their decorated properties For each property I generate a "property modifier", a class that contains 2 delegates: one to set and one to get the value of the property. Property Modifiers are stored in a dictionary, with the name of the property as key In my base class, there is another dictionary that contains all property-modifier-dictionaries, with the Type of the respective class as key. What the SetPropertyValue method does is this: Get the correct property-modifier-dictionary, using the concrete type of the derived class (<- yet to solve) Get the property modifier of the property to change (e.g. of the property size) Use the get or set delegate to modify the property's value Some example code to clarify further: private static Dictionary<RuntimeTypeHandle, object> EditableTypes; //property-modifier-dictionary protected void SetPropertyValue<T>(EditablePropertyMap<T> map, string property, object value) { var property = map[property]; // get the property modifier property.Set((T)this, value); // use the set delegate (encapsulated in a method) } In the above code, T is the Type of the actual (derived) class. I need this type for the get/set delegates. The problem is how to get the EditablePropertyMap<T> when I don't know what T is. My current (ugly) solution is to pass the map in an overriden virtual method in the derived class: public override void SetPropertyValue(string property, object value) { base.SetPropertyValue((EditablePropertyMap<ExampleType>)EditableTypes[typeof(ExampleType)], property, value); } What this does is: get the correct dictionary containing the property modifiers of this class using the class's type, cast it to the appropiate type and pass it to the SetPropertyValue method. I want to get rid of the SetPropertyValue method in my derived class (since there are a lot of derived classes), but don't know yet how to accomplish that. I cannot just make a virtual GetEditablePropertyMap<T> method because I cannot infer a concrete type for T then. I also cannot acces my dictionary directly with a type and retrieve an EditablePropertyMap<T> from it because I cannot cast to it from object in the base class, since again I do not know T. I found some neat tricks to infere types (e.g. by adding a dummy T parameter), but cannot apply them to my specific problem. I'd highly appreciate any suggestions you may have for me.

  • How do I integrate a BSDF into a ray caster.

    - by pelb
I'm trying to implement sub surface scattering at isosurfaces and looked up how a BSDF works mathematically. Implementing the reflective and diffuse part seems to be quite easy as i just have to evaluate phong at the isosurface intersection, but how do you I apply the transmissive part of the BSDF? In what way do i have to modify the ray direction. Any pointers to a practical implementation are welcome. Thanks and So long!

  • typeof for html plugin elements

    - by gf
When using ECMAScripts typeof on plugin elements (i.e. embed or object), Safari & FireFox return "function": typeof(window.document['myPlugin']) // "function" This can't be influenced on the plugin side, as the browser doesn't call the plugin here. Funny enough, in IE the same line evaluates to "object". Is that simply implementation dependent behaviour as per ECMAScript §11.4.3 or am i missing something here?

  • Which MS technologies would be suited for a data intensive application?

    - by steve.tse
I'm a junior VB.net developer with little application design knowledge. I've been reading a lot of material online regarding different design patterns, frameworks, and methodologies. It's become a bit confusing for me. Right now I'm trying to decide on what language would be best suited to convert an existing VB6 application (with SQL server backend.) I need to update the UI and add more user functionality and reporting capabilities. Initially I was thinking of using WPF and attempting the MVVM model for this big project. Reports would be generated from SSRS. A peer suggested using ASP.net and I don't have enough experience to determine what would be better. The senior programmers here are stuck on using VB6 and don't have any input on what to use. They are encouraging me to use the latest technologies. This application would be for ~20 users in a central location. Ideally I would stick to a Microsoft .net language. Current interface is similar to a datagrid table where the user would click in to see the detail of each record. They would need to have multiple records open at any given time. I look forward to all the advice I can get. EDIT 2010/04/22 2:47 PM EST What is your audience? Internal clients within an intranet How complex are the interactions you expect to implement? not very... displaying data from SQL server to UI. Allow user updates to said data. Typically just one user modifying a record. Do you require near real-time data updates? no How often do you expect to update the application after the first release? twice/year Do you expect a well-defined set of client platforms? Yes, windows xp environment, potentially upgrading to Win7. Currently in IE.6 moving to IE7 or 8 within a couple of months. Do users need access from anywhere? No, just from their PC.

  • First Year Computer Science Programming Languages

    - by Jon
I was reading this article earlier regarding C/C#/PHP being dropped as first languages in Advanced Level (pre-university) Computer Science courses: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05/12/aqa_c_php/ It also goes on to say: Teachers planning to use Java are warned that many universities are considering dropping it from their first year computer science programmes, "as has happened n the US". Does anybody know, what the language predominantly used in US first year Comp Science programs is currently?

  • PHP apache_request_headers() diagrees with reality (as confirmed by Firebug): why?

    - by Peter Howe
I have written a web app in PHP which makes use of Ajax requests (made using YUI.util.Connect.asyncRequest). Most of the time, this works fine. The request is sent with an X-Requested-With value of XMLHttpRequest. My PHP controller code uses apache_request_headers() to check whether an incoming request is Ajax or not and all works well. But not always. Intermittently, I'm getting a situation where the Ajax request is sent (and Firebug confirms for me that the headers on the request include an X-Requested-With of XMLHttpRequest) but apache_request_headers() is not returning that header in its list. The output from when I var_dump the apache_request_headers() is as follows (note the lack of X- 'Host' => string 'peterh.labs.example.com' (length=26) 'User-Agent' => string 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3' (length=105) 'Accept' => string 'text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8' (length=63) 'Accept-Language' => string 'en-gb,en;q=0.5' (length=14) 'Accept-Encoding' => string 'gzip, deflate' (length=12) 'Accept-Charset' => string 'ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7' (length=30) 'Keep-Alive' => string '300' (length=3) 'Connection' => string 'keep-alive' (length=10) 'Referer' => string 'http://peterh.labs.example.com/qmail/' (length=40) 'Cookie' => string 'WORKFLOW_SESSION=55f9aff2051746851de453c1f776ad10745354f6' (length=57) 'Pragma' => string 'no-cache' (length=8) 'Cache-Control' => string 'no-cache' (length=8) But Firebug tells me: Request Headers: Host peterh.labs.example.com User-Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3 Accept text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,**;q=0.8 Accept-Language en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding gzip, deflate Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive 300 Connection keep-alive X-Requested-With XMLHttpRequest Referer http://peterh.labs.example.com/qmail/ Cookie WORKFLOW_SESSION=55f9aff2051746851de453c1f776ad10745354f6 This mismatch is (apparently) intermittent when executing the same code. But I don't believe in "intermittent" when it comes to software! Help!

  • How to filter a list in J?

    - by Gregory Higley
I'm currently learning the fascinating J programming language, but one thing I have not been able to figure out is how to filter a list. Suppose I have the arbitrary list 3 2 2 7 7 2 9 and I want to remove the 2s but leave everything else unchanged, i.e., my result would be 3 7 7 9. How on earth do I do this?

  • running same query in different databases

    - by user316833
I wrote a query that I want to run in several access databases. I have 1000+ access databases with the same tables (same names, same fields). So far, I have been manually copying this query from a txt file to the sql view in the access query design screen for each database and then run it. I did not need to change the query language - everything is the same for the 1000 databases. Is there a way to automate this?

  • <asp:Table> Vs html <table>

    - by keith
What are the pros and cons between using the ASP.Net control compared to the old reliable table html implementation. I know that the asp:Table will end up on the returned page as a html table, and from looking into it so far people are saying its easier to work with the asp:Table in the server side code, but I'd love to hear what the stackoverflow community has to say about the matter.
