Is there something similar to Altiris (now Symatec) Software Virtualization Suite for Mac OS X?
Or just a possibility to "revert" all changes a app/installer made to the filesystem?
Thanks
My company already has a "local" backup strategy, but is willing to also backup data on our remote dedicated server as an additional "plus".
Some info:
Both machines are Windows Server (client is 2003, server is 2008)
Administrator rights on both machines
Valid SSL Certificate available
FTP/IIS Server available and in use
Required cryptation during transfer & storage
Free space is not a problem
Which software (both client and server side) you advice us to take?
I'm looking at using ConfigServer Security and Firewall (CSF; iptables-based). After I configure it properly, how much daily ongoing management is required of me to keep my server secure? Am I going to be flooded with "alert" emails that I need to check? Or does the firewall automatically take care of most security threats for me?
Note: I understand that there's more to server security than just a software firewall, but this question is specifically for CSF security management.
Hi,
Double click on an image opens the default application associated with it.
E.g. "jpg" opens with "Preview", but some times I need to open with an alternate application, e.g. photo editing software.
I don't want to change the "default" handling from "Preview" but may be with "Cmd-Enter" or "Ctrl-Enter" I want to open with another application instead of "Open With"-Select Application...
Is it possible?
Thanks.
I use Password Safe on my PC, http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/, to open my .psafe3 files. However, I have an iPhone and a blackberry. Is there any software packages for both or either that would allow me to use the password safe files I already have?
Is it possible to update WXP using a batch script? Basically, I would like to run a batch script, which installs all important updates in the background accepting any dialog boxes which need user interaction.
EDIT 1:
I know I can enable the "Automatically download and install" option to do this, but I have about 100 computers to do, so it would be nice if it can be done via a batch file. That way, I can use the software we already have to run a batch file on all computers with a single click.
In my HFT software I plan to use one core for stock index calculation. That would be simply while(true) loop without any delays which will calculate (sum and multiply) components as often as possible (so millions times per second) and I plan to do that 8 hours per day every day.
I was never before loading my computer to 100% full time every day regullary. May it be dangerous? Do processor has kind of "resource" (very big of course) after which it can stopped working?
I have a Flip UltraHD, and I'd like to find alternatives to the included FlipShare software. I want to download videos from the Flip hardware and remove videos from the Flip's memory. A Mac version would be great, but not essential.
Hello!
Does anyone has experience with this device under Linux?
On which level of abstraction is the Wacom Bamboo tablet supported?
Is the device input just translated to mouse input, so that every application
can profit from it?
Or do I need special (design|paint|...)-software which explicitely supports this device?
We are running a payments (EFT transaction processing) application which is processing high volumes of transactions 24/7 and are currently investigating a better way of doing DB replication to our disaster recovery site.
Our current and previous strategies have included using both DoubleTake and Redgate to replicate data to a warm stand-by.
DoubleTake is the supported solution from the payments software vendor however their (DoubleTake's) support in South Africa is very poor. We had a few issues and simply couldn't ever resolve them so we had to give up on DoubleTake.
We have been using Redgate to manually read the data from the primary site (via queries) and write to the DR site but this is:
A bad solution
Getting the software vendor hot and bothered whenever we have support issues as it has a tendency to interfere with the payment application which is very DB intensive.
We recently upgraded the whole system to run on SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise which means we should probably be looking at using some of the built-in replication features.
The server has 2 fairly large databases with a mixture of tables containing highly volatile transactional data and pretty static configuration data.
Replication would be done over a WAN link to a separate physical site and needs to achieve the following objectives.
RPO: Zero loss - This is transactional data with financial impact so we can't lose anything.
RTO: Tending to zero - The business depends on our ability to process transactions every minute we are down we are losing money
I have looked at a few of the other questions/answers but none meet our case exactly:
SQL Server 2008 failover strategy - Log shipping or replication?
How to achieve the following RTO & RPO with logshipping only using SQL Server?
What is the best of two approaches to achieve DB Replication?
My current thinking is that we should use mirroring but I am concerned that for RPO:0 we will need to do delayed commits and this could impact the performance of the primary DB which is not an option.
Our current DR process is to:
Stop incoming traffic to the primary site and allow all in-flight transaction to complete.
Allow the replication to DR to complete.
Change network routing to route to DR site.
Start all applications and services on the secondary site (Ideally we can change this to a warmer stand-by whereby the applications are already running but not processing any transactions).
In other words the DR database needs to, as quickly as possible, catch up with primary and be ready for processing as the new primary. We would then need to be able to reverse this when we are ready to switch back.
Is there a better option than mirroring (should we be doing log-shipping too) and can anyone suggest other considerations that we should keep in mind?
i have Asus Wimax Dongle
and it has an Independence software from the Asus company
requires user name and password
and its running will over windows 7
now i've tried ubuntu 10.10
but nothing happens when i plug the dongle into usb.
in windows if you plugs it for the first time, an application wizard begins
and you can find a virtual cd in my computer
but i cant find it in Ubuntu
now i would install it over ubuntu, how?
toast for all
I am sure my Windows Server 2008 box is constantly under attack both at the network level and web application level.
QUestion is How do i detect these attacks? is there any light-weight software available? which can monitor the server?
Note I am running this on a VPS so the monitor program will have to run on the same server.
I have Windows 7 Home Prem 32-bit with 2GB RAM.
I have some older software that won't run so am wondering if i can run XP Mode?
Is it only possible if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate?
If that is the case is there any other way to do something similar or will i need to install XP on another HD or partition?
I need to emulate a LAN between some machines over the internet to play some LAN only games. I remember that there was software that could do this, but don't remember what it was called.
Anyone heard of this, or know of similar solutions that won't require a lot of work? The game is fun, but not fun enough to bother with setting up a VPN server. ;-)

Looking For Video Editing Software for Ubuntu
I'd like a working video editor for 720p MPEG4 (.mov) with 16Khz ulaw audio in Linux. I've already tried pitivi (audio encoding issues) and kdenlive (crashes almost immediately after a clip is imported). What should I try?
I'm preparing to remotely install Windows 2008 Standard onto a 6250 blade module mounted in a SunBlade 6000 chassis rack.
Are there any gotchas (aside from the predictable issues related to bandwidth in transferring the ISO, etc.) for this? Has anyone else successfully completed this task?
I'm not a hardware guy, I'm a software guy who has been handed this task because the guys in the datacenter don't want to touch it.
Any help is appreciated.
I wonder if there is a software which can control Windows server over a browser. I know it sounds is strange however I haven't seen any and as you can do scripting with *nix system I think it could be a good one.
Functions that I am after:
User management
Printer install
msi assign
I know there are many programmes including a win server but I would like to do it only one surface.
Has anyone come a cross such a thing like this?
I need to share data on an external drive that will be handed over to someone else, and I would like to achieve the following:
(1) protect all the files and folders from being copied/moved/deleted/cut on windows system
(2) files are browsable and media playable, but it stays inside the drive
(3) the same behavior if drive is plugged on linux system, or not accessible at all is fine too.
How can I do these without using paid software?
I am looking to see if anything exists that would allow us to capture all outgoing email on a machine -- for example, in a staging environment -- and drop it in a single place, which ideally would be something we could check with a mail client.
Currently we're doing this on the software level (if environment is staging, rewrite address) which is a bit ugly and leads to errors.
The servers are currently on Debian Linux, using exim as the mail transport.
Open to any and all suggestions!
I develop web applications on Mac OSX in SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL and these are then put on the webserver. I want to be able to take the brunt out of looking at the terminal locally when dealing with these databases - is there any software available (free or otherwise) that can handle all three of these database technologies in a GUI for the Mac that is actually decent and worth it?
Hi,
whenever I turn on Chrome, it crashes after a very short while (less than a minute). It started happening about a week ago for no apparent reason. I didn't install any new software, update or uninstall anything (as far as I remember), it just crashes. It doesn't matter wether I even open any page or not, Chrome just dies, period.
Doesn't anybody have an idea why might that be?
I'm running on Windows Vista Home Basic.
I have a WinXP machine which has 2 ethernet ports. The information I've found indicates that the first nic in the advanced settings list is the one that receives all traffic.
I'd like to configure them so that all traffic destined for a particular IP range goes to one nic and the rest goes to the other nic. Is that possible? If so, do I need additional software like zonealarm to shape the traffic?
I know Ghost and Clonezilla aren't able to build images of a system while the system is running(Without Rebooting). Haven't Checked on Acronis though, but i don't simpatize with private solutions.
Question: Is there a software solution which is able to build a "Live" image?
Would appreciate anwsers, since I'm one step away from building a Clonezilla test enviroment and this will just help on my decision.
Thank you.
What is the best method to rip/encode a standard definition DVD, to be streamed to a Xbox360 from a Vista Media Center pc (preferably using free software). I’ve found tons of tutorials on the web explaining how to create wmv’s from vob files using FFMpeg, but every combination of settings that I have tried has resulted in very poor video quality. I’ve also tried various video conmversion tools, but everything seems to result in poor video quality, or audio that is out of sync with the picture. Please help!
If I make a VPN connection to a server (say myvpn.com; assume this server is not behind any router/firewall) via a TUN device and open a port (say 5555), will someone else be able to connect to me via myvpn.com:5555? If not, is there a tunneling software that does exactly this in a transparent manner? i.e. run any TCP/UDP-based server instance behind a router without NAT using another remote server.
