• [newbie]Webservice - Threads - close if no active threads, if any activen, then wait till its compl

  Hi I have an ASP.Net webservice running. When the system date changes, i want to close all the threads and restart them again, if the thread/s aren't doing any work. If any of the thread/s is in the process of doing some work(active threads), then i need to wait till the current thread/s complete its process and then close. This will prevent from aborting any current process. Any ideas on how i can perform such a task? Thanks PS:I am new to ASP.NET and Multithreading.

When in asp.net I change the from mail address to username given in NetworkCredential, I recieve mails. But in C# windows application, I can get emails, even if sender's email address is not valid.   I tried to be the most descriptive I could. Ok, so since I've never done anything like this before, I guess it's better to ask before starting at all to just don't get the whole process wrong. We have a report that has to be called from an ASP.NET application, it could be a simple button. Through the code-behind, I gotta pass in a paramater, render the report, and don't save it anywhere, just open it to the user, as a .pdf file so he could save or print it. So please, give me links or tips, I'm reading MSDN documentation right now... If you have any suggestion on other technologies, as for the report, I'd like to hear it, but it has to be called from ASP.NET. Thanks in advance!

  Hi All, I have been trying to set up local debugging for my ASP.NET app in Delphi and am getting the error above. I have used the aspnet_regiis.exe tool with the following: Aspnet_regiis.exe -s W3SVC/1/ROOT/DevTest but this hasn't helped. It added it to IIS as an application but I am still getting the error: The project cannot be debugged because virtual directory "DevTes" is not configured with ASP.NET version 2.0 or 3.0 Use aspnet_regiis.exe to configure the local IIS web server. I am not really sure where to go from here so need some help please: Machine specs: Windows 7 64bit, IIS7, Using RAD Studio 2007.

Unfortunately, I cannot add a strongly typed view as easily as I am used to ‘under’ asp.net mvc. What can I do to ‘enable’ this in VS 2008 Prof? At the moment I have a form with a number of text boxs which would lend themselves well to an autocomplete ability. • A control that contains multiple duplicate properties causing deadlock issues on IIS

  I am trying to work out if the above case is true for our site. I've been told by my hosting provider that this fix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974165) has to applied to our server due to performance issues. It basically describes an issues where UI code like: <asp:gridview id="GridView1" runat="server" ... Does anybody know of a way that I can detect this issue in the build process or the debugger? Any help would be much appreciate.

• Are web service handler chains possible under IIS / ASP.NET

  I'm working with a client who wants me to implement a particular design in an IIS/ASP.NET environment. This design was already implemented in Java, but I am not sure it is possible using Microsoft technologies. In a Tomcat/Java environment one can create so call Handler Chains. In essence a handler runs on the server on which the web service is running and it intercepts the SOAP message coming to the web service. The handler can perform a number of tasks before passing control to the web service. Some of these tasks may refer to authentication and authorization. Moreover, one can create handler chains, such that the handlers can run in a particular sequence before passing control to the web service. This is a very elegant solution, as certain aspects of authentication and authorization can be automatically performed, without the developer of the client application and of the web service having to invest anything in it. The code for the client application and the web service is not affected. You may find a number of articles on internet on this subject by searching on Google for "web service handler chain". I performed searches for web service handlers in IIS or ASP.NET. I get some hits, but apparently handlers in IIS have another meaning than that described above. My question therefor is: Can handler chains (as available in Java and Tomcat) be created in IIS? If so, how (any article, book, forum...)? Either a negative or a positive answer will be greatly appreciated. Mike

  I'm building the 2nd iteration of a web-based CRM+CMS for a franchise service business in ASP.NET MVC 2. I need to control access to each franchise's services based on the roles a user is assigned for that franchise. 4 examples: Receptionist should be able to book service jobs in for her "Atlantic Seaboard" franchise, but not do any reporting. Technician should be able to alter service jobs, but not modify invoices. Managers should be able to apply discount to invoices for jobs within their stores. Owner should be able to pull reports for any franchises he owns. Where should franchise-level access control fit in between the Data - Services - Web layer? If it belongs in my Controllers, how should I best implement it? Controller Implementation Access Control with [Authorize] attribute If there was just one franchise involved, I could simply limit access to a controller action like so: [Authorize(Roles="Receptionist, Technician, Manager, Owner")] public ActionResult CreateJob(Job job) { ... } And since franchises don't just pop up over night, perhaps this is a strong case to use the new Areas feature in ASP.NET MVC 2? Or would this lead to duplicate Views? Controllers, URL Routing & Areas Assuming Areas aren't used, what would be the best way to determine which franchise's data is being accessed? I thought of this: {franchise}/{controller}/{action}/{id} or is it better to determine a job's franchise in a Details(...) action and limit a user's action with [Authorize]: {job}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} {invoice}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} which makes more sense if any user could potentially have access to more than one franchise without cluttering the URL with a {franchise} parameter. Any input is appreciated.

  I'm having a problem with setting a default mapping in IIS 6. I want to secure *.HTML files with ASP.NET forms authentication. The problem seems to have something to do with using virtual directories to hold the html files. Here's how it's setup: sample directory tree c:/inetpub/ (nothing in here) d:/web_files/my_web_apps d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app1/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app2/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/ app1 and app2 both access the same html_files directory, so html_files is set as a virtual directory in the web apps in IIS... sample web directory tree //app1/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) //app2/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) If I put a file called test.html in the root of //app1/ and then add the default mapping to the asp.net dll and setup my security on the root folder with deny="?", then accessing test.html works exactly as expected. If I'm not authenticated, it takes me to the login.aspx page, and if I am authenticated then it displays test.html. If I put the test.html file in the html_files directory I get a totally different behavior. Now the login.aspx page loads and I stuck some code in to check if I was still authenticated: <p>autheticated: <%=User.Identity.IsAuthenticated%></p> I figured it would say false because why else would it bother to load the login page? Nope, it says true - so it knows i'm authenticated, but it won't give me access to the test.html file. I've spent several hours on this and haven't been able to solve it. I'm going to spend some more time on google to see if I've missed something. Fingers crossed.

• Strange exceptions using FindControl after implementing master pages

  I have some simple repeater code given here: <asp:Repeater ID="ResultsRepeater" runat="server" DataSourceID="ResultsDS"> <HeaderTemplate> <table id="Results" class="data"> <tr id="Header" runat="server"> <th>Item</th> </tr> </table> </HeaderTemplate> </asp:Repeater> I used to be able to then access the repeater to get said header, as such: HtmlTableRow header = ResultsRepeater.Controls[0].Controls[0].FindControl("Header") as HtmlTableRow; After implementing master pages, I noticed my calls to header.InnerText and .InnerHtml throw exceptions, specifically: 'header.InnerHtml' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException' 'header.InnerText' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException' Can anyone share what's going on with me? I am of course assuming master pages caused this, since it's the only thing I've changed besides minor updates (that should not affect this in any way).

• SubWebFolder and mutliple bin folders with Website model?

  Hi, I am looking for some advice on how what is the best approach to subweb folders and having mutliple bin folders in the WebSite Project model. For adding new pages at a later stage without recompiling the core files of a website and without building a full fledged Plug-in framework api. I am aware of being able to drop in the compiled dlls into the main bin folder and to just copy over the new page files to a sub folder but I am looking for a more organized file/folder approach. Here is the how it was done with WAP: Moving the Code-Behind Assemblies/DLLs to a different folder than /BIN with ASP.NET 1.1 Multiple /bin folders in ASP.NET I should also mention that I see that I can still do it the old way with the website project model by making the adjustment to the config section mentioned here but I was wondering if that has any side affects.   I am calling a RESTful web service in the back-end of some ASP.NET pages. I am using ASP.NET asynchronous pages, so under the hood I am using the methods: HttpWebRequest BeginGetResponse() and HttpWebRequest EndGetResponse() The response string in my case is always a JSON string. I use the following code to read the entire string: using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(myHttpWebResponse.GetResponseStream())) { myObject.JSONData = sr.ReadToEnd(); } Is this method OK in terms of scalability? I have seen other code samples that instead retrieve the response data in blocks using Read(). My primary goal is scalability, so this back-end call can be made across many concurrent page hits. But WITHOUT any changes from me with those files. Sometimes it works on another VS... sometimes regetting project helps... but it is always waste of time (

• Can't read from aspnet_client folder for crystal reports

  I created a little ASP .Net app to run Crystal Reports. It runs fine from VS 2008 but not when deployed to IIS on Windows 7. The toolbar images are not rendered. The problem seems to be I can't read from the aspnet_client folder even though I've made into a virtual directory. I can't even read images I put in there just to see if the folder can be read from an ASP page. I also made sure the IIS user can read from there. I'm stumped.

• Getting IIS Worker Process Crash dumps

  I'm doing something bad in my ASP.NET app. It could be the any number of CTP libraries I'm using or I'm just not disposing something properly. But when I redeploy my ASP.NET to my Vista IIS7 install or my server's IIS6 install I crash an IIS worker process. I've narrowed the problem down to my HTTP crawler, which is a multithreaded beast that crawls sites for useful information when asked to. After I start a crawler and redeploy the app over the top, rather than gracefully unloading the appDomain and reloading, an IIS worker process will crash (popping up a crash message) and continue reloading the app domain. When this crash happens, where can I find the crash dump for analysis?
