• FAQ: GridView Calculation with JavaScript - Displaying Quantity Total

  Previously we've talked about how calculate the sub-totals and grand total in GridView here, how to format the numbers into a currency format and how to validate the quantity to just accept whole numbers using JavaScript here. One of the users in the forum (http://forums.asp.net) is asking if how to modify the script to display the quantity total in the footer. In this post I'm going to show you how to it. Basically we just need to modify the javascript CalculateTotals function and add the codes there for calculating the quantity total and display it in the footer.   ADF Business Components support the ability to publish the underlying Application Modules (AMs) and View Objects (VOs) as web services through Service Data Objects (SDOs).  This blog post looks at a minor challenge to overcome when using SDOs and Entity Objects (EOs) that use a composition association. Using the default ADF BC EO association behaviour ADF BC components allow you to work with VOs that are based on EOs that are a part of a parent-child composition association.  A composition association enforces that you cannot create records for the child outside the context of the parent.  As example when creating invoice-lines you want to enforce the individual lines have a relating parent invoice record, it just simply doesn't make sense to save invoice-lines without their parent invoice record. In the following screenshot using the ADF BC Tester it demonstrates the correct way to create a child Employees record as part of a composition association with Departments: And the following screenshot shows you the wrong way to create an Employee record: Note the error which is enforced by the composition association: (oracle.jbo.InvalidOwnerException) JBO-25030: Detail entity Employees with row key null cannot find or invalidate its owning entity.  Working with composition associations via the SDO web services  Shay Shmeltzer recently recorded a good video which demonstrates how to expose your ADF Business Components through the SDO interface. On exposing the VOs you get a choice of operation to publish including create, update, delete and more: For example through the SDO test interface we can see that the create operation will request the attributes for the VO exposed, in this case EmployeesView1: In this specific case though, just like the ADF BC Tester, an attempt to create this record will fail with JBO-25030, the composition association is still enforced: The correct way to to do this is through the create operation on the DepartmentsView1 which also lets you create employees record in context of the parent, thus satisfying the composition association rule: Yet at issue here is the create operation will always create both the parent Departments and Employees records.  What do we do if we've already previously created the parent Departments records, and we just want to create additional Employees records for that Department?  The create method of the EmployeeView1 as we saw previously doesn't allow us to do that, the JBO-3050 error will be raised. The solution is the "merge" operation on the parent Departments record: In this case for the Departments record you just need to supply the DepartmentId of the Department you want the Employees record to be associated with, as well as the new Employees record.  When invoked only the Employees record is created, and the supply of the DepartmentId of the Departments record satisfies the composition association without actually creating or updating the associated Department record that already exists in the database. Be warned however if you supply any more attributes for the Department record, it will result in a merge (update) of the associated Departments record too.

Each File has a value and a list of dependencies which is again of type File. Every file is exposed with a property called Change which tells whether the file is changed or not. I brainstormed to form a algorithm which goes through all these files and build in an order( i.e typical build process ) but haven't got a better algorithm. Can anyone throw some light on this? But this text can also be X16.1Y2.3 (the values will always be different after X and Y) I want to change it to this X17.8Y-1.G54 or X(value)Y(value)G54 My RegEx statement follows but it is not working. content = Regex.Replace(content, @"(X(?:\d*\.)?\d+)*(Y(?:\d*\.)?\d+)", "$1$2G54"); Can someone please modify it for me so it works and will search for X(wildcard) Y(Wildcard) and replace it with X(value)Y(value)G54?

• MVC Pattern, ViewModels, Location of conversion.

  I've been working with ASP.Net MVC for around a year now and have created my applications in the following way. X.Web - MVC Application Contains Controller and Views X.Lib - Contains Data Access, Repositories and Services. This allows us to drop the .Lib into any application that requires it. At the moment we are using Entity Framework, the conversion from EntityO to a more specific model is done in the controller. This set-up means if a service method returns an EntityO and then the Controller will do a conversion before the data is passed to a view. I'm interested to know if I should move the conversion to the Service so that the app doesn't have Entity Objects being passed around.

• Hiding flash component scrollbars using object/param syntax

  Hi all, I'm not sure if this is possible (complete non-flash developer speaking), but we have a 3rd party component that we want to only show a certain topleft hand portion of. I've tried limiting the size of the HTML object container as: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="415" data="<url>"> <param name="movie" value="<url>" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="flashvars" value="<vars>" /> </object> So limiting it to 600x415, but this causes horizontal and vertical scrollbars as part of the flash component to appear. Is there any standard way to override this behaviour? Thanks.

• Atomikos with Hibernate will exhaust db connections

  I am testing an application (Spring 2.5, Hibernate 3.5.0 Beta, Atomikos 3.6.2, and Postgreql 8.4.2) with the configuration for the DAO listed below. The problem that I see is that the pool of 10 connections with the dataSource gets exhausted after the 10's transaction. I know 'hibernate.connection.release_mode' has no effect unless the session is obtained with openSession rather then using a contextual session. I am wandering if anyone has found a way to instruct atomikos code to release connections after any transaction. • Adding Attributes to Generated Classes

  ASP.NET MVC 2 adds support for data annotations, implemented via attributes on your model classes.  Depending on your design, you may be using an OR/M tool like Entity Framework or LINQ-to-SQL to generate your entity classes, and you may further be using these entities directly as your Model.  This is fairly common, and alleviates the need to do mapping between POCO domain objects and such entities (though there are certainly pros and cons to using such entities directly). As an example, the current version of the NerdDinner application (available on CodePlex at nerddinner.codeplex.com) uses Entity Framework for its model.  Thus, there is a NerdDinner.edmx file in the project, and a generated NerdDinner.Models.Dinner class.  Fortunately, these generated classes are marked as partial, so you can extend their behavior via your own partial class in a separate file.  However, if for instance the generated Dinner class has a property Title of type string, you cant then add your own Title of type string for the purpose of adding data annotations to it, like this: public partial class Dinner { [Required] public string Title { get;set; } } This will result in a compilation error, because the generated Dinner class already contains a definition of Title.  How then can we add attributes to this generated code?  Do we need to go into the T4 template and add a special case that says if were generated a Dinner class and it has a Title property, add this attribute?  Ick. MetadataType to the Rescue The MetadataType attribute can be used to define a type which contains attributes (metadata) for a given class.  It is applied to the class you want to add metadata to (Dinner), and it refers to a totally separate class to which youre free to add whatever methods and properties you like.  Using this attribute, our partial Dinner class might look like this: [MetadataType(typeof(Dinner_Validation))] public partial class Dinner {}   public class Dinner_Validation { [Required] public string Title { get; set; } } In this case the Dinner_Validation class is public, but if you were concerned about muddying your API with such classes, it could instead have been created as a private class within Dinner.  Having the validation attributes specified in their own class (with no other responsibilities) complies with the Single Responsibility Principle and makes it easy for you to test that the validation rules you expect are in place via these annotations/attributes. • Overloading properties in C#

  Ok, I know that property overloading is not supported in C# - most of the references explain it by citing the single-method-different-returntype problem. However, what about setters? I'd like to directly assign a value as either a string or object, but only return as a string. Like this: public string FieldIdList { get { return fieldIdList.ToString(); } set { fieldIdList = new FieldIdList(value); } } public FieldIdList FieldIdList { set { fieldIdList = value; } } private FieldIdList fieldIdList; Why wouldn't this be allowed? I've also seen that "properties" simply create getter/setter functions on compile. Would it be possible to create my own? Something like: public void set_FieldIdList(FieldIdList value) { fieldIdList = value; } That would do the same thing. Thoughts?

  Una de las opciones que todo aplicación debería tener es el poder ponerse en modo OFFLINE para evitar el acceso de usuarios. Esto es completamente necesario cuando queremos realizar cambios a nuestra aplicación (cambiar algo, poner una actualización, etc) o a nuestra base de datos y evitarnos problemas con los usuarios que se encuentren logueados dentro de la aplicación en ese momento. Muchos ejemplos a través de la Web exponen la forma de realizar esta tarea utilizando dos técnicas: 1. La primera de ellas es utilizar el archivo App_Offline.htm sin embargo, esta técnica tiene un inconveniente. Y es que, una vez que hemos subido el archivo a nuestra aplicación esta se bloquea completamente y no tenemos forma de volver a ponerla ONLINE a menos que eliminemos el archivo. Es decir no podemos controlarla. 2. La segunda de ellas es el utilizar la etiqueta httpRuntime, pero nuevamente tenemos el mismo problema. Al habilitar el modo OFFLINE mediante esta etiqueta, tampoco podremos acceder a un modo de administración para cambiarla. Un ejemplo de la etiqueta httpRuntime <configuration> <system.web> <httpRuntime enable="false" /> </system.web> </configuration>   Tomando en cuenta lo anterior, lo mas optimo seria que podamos por medio de alguna pagina de administración colocar nuestro sitio en modo OFFLINE, pero manteniendo el acceso a la pagina de administración para poder volver a cambiar el valor que pondrá nuestra aplicación nuevamente en modo ONLINE. Para ello, utilizaremos el web.config de nuestra aplicación y una pequeña clase que se encargara de Leer y escribir los valores. Lo primero será, abrir nuestro web.config y definir dentro del appSettings dos nuevas KEY que contendrán los valores para el modo OFFLINE de nuestra aplicación: <appSettings> <add key="IsOffline" value="false" /> <add key="IsOfflineMessage" value="Sistema temporalmente no disponible por tareas de mantenimiento." /> </appSettings>   En las KEY anteriores tenemos el IsOffLine con value de false, esto es para indicarle a nuestra aplicación que actualmente su modo de funcionamiento es ONLINE, este valor será el que posteriormente cambiemos a TRUE para volver al modo OFFLINE. Nuestra segunda KEY (IsOfflineMessage) posee el value (Sistema temporalmente….) que será mostrado al usuario como un mensaje cuando el sitio este en modo OFFLINE. Una vez definidas nuestras dos KEY en el web.config, escribiremos una clase personalizada para leer y escribir los valores. Así que, agregamos un nuevo elemento de tipo clase al proyecto llamado SettingsRules y la definimos como Public. Si el resultado de ese if es –1 quiere decir que no coincide, entonces, esa será la bandera que nos permitirá bloquear inmediatamente la pagina actual, transfiriendo al usuario a una pagina de mantenimiento. Ahora, en nuestra carpeta Admin crearemos una nueva pagina asp.net llamada OnlineSettings.aspx para actualizar y leer los datos del web.config y una pagina Default.aspx para pruebas. Nuestra página OnlineSettings tendrá dos pasos importantes: 1.   Possible Duplicate: Why do Google search results include pages disallowed in robots.txt? In my robots.txt I am disallowing a lot of URLs. Google webmaster tools says there're +750 URL blocked. The problem is the URLs are still showing on Google search. For example I have the following rule: Disallow: /entity/child-health/ But when I search some-keyword + child health the following URL shows up : http://www.sitename.com/entity/child-health/ Am I doing anything wrong? Is is possible for a URL to be blocked using robots.txt and still show up on search results?

• Custom Sorting on Custom Field in Django

  In my app, I have defined a custom field to represent a physical quantity using the quantities package. class AmountField(models.CharField): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): ... def to_python(self, value): create_quantities_value(value) Essentially the way it works is it extends CharField to store the value as a string in the database "12 min" and represents it as a quantities object when using the field in a model array(12) * min Then in a model it is used as such: class MyModel(models.Model): group = models.CharField() amount = AmountField() class Meta: ordering = ['group', 'amount'] My issue is that these fields do not seem to sort by the quantity, but instead by the string. So if I have some objects that contain something like {"group":"A", "amount":"12 min"} {"group":"A", "amount":"20 min"} {"group":"A", "amount":"2 min"} {"group":"B", "amount":"20 min"} {"group":"B", "amount":"1 hr"} they end up sorted something like this: >>> MyModel.objects.all() [{A, 12 min}, {A, 2 min}, {A, 20 min}, {B, 1 hr}, {B, 20 min}] essentially alphabetical order. Can I give my custom AmountField a comparison function so that it will compare by the python value instead of the DB value?

• Setter Validation can affect performance?

  Whitin a scenario where you use an ORM to map your entities to the DB, and you have setter validations (nullable, date lower than today validation, etc) every time the ORM get a result, it will pass into the setter to instance the object. If I have a grid that usually returns 500 records, I assume that for each record it passes on all validations. If my entity has 5 setter validations, than I have passed in 2.500 validations. Does those 2.500 validations will affect the performance? If was 15.000 validation, it will be different? In my opinion, and according to this answer (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4893558/calling-setters-from-a-constructor/4893604#4893604), setter validation is usefull than constructors validation. Is there a way to avoid unecessary validation, since I am safe that the values I send to DB when saving the entity wont change until I edit it on my system?

Obviously the series of post  that I wrote will not work in this case because the price field in those examples are Label (read-only) and not TextBox fields. In this post I'm going to demonstrate how to accomplish this using the same method used in my previous examples. Basically I'm just going to modify the GridView declaration and replace the Label price field with a TextBox so that users can type on it. And finally modify the CalculateTotals() javascript function.   Very close to what I'm trying to do but not quite the answer I think I'm looking for: How to map IDictionary<string, Entity> in Fluent NHibernate I'm trying to implement an IDictionary<String, IList<MyEntity>>and map this collection to the database using NHibernate. I do understand that you cannot map collections of collections directly in NHibernate, but I do need the functionality of accessing an ordered list of elements by key. I've implemented IUserCollectionType for my IList<MyEntity> so that I can use IDictionary<String, MyCustomCollectionType> but am struggling with how to get the map to work as I'd like. • Best way to go about sorting 2D sprites in a "RPG Maker" styled RPG

  I am trying to come up with the best way to create overlapping sprites without having any issues. I was thinking of having a SortedDictionary and setting the Entity's key to it's Y position relative to the max bound of the simulation, aka the Z value. I'd update the "Z" value in the update method each frame, if the entity's position has changed at all. For those who don't know what I mean, I want characters who are standing closer in front of another character to be drawn on top, and if they are behind the character, they are drawn behind. I'm leery of using SpriteBatch back to front or front to back, I've been doing some searching and have been under the impression they are a bad idea. and want to know exactly how other people are dealing with their depth sorting. Just ultimately trying to come up with the best method of sorting for good practice before I get too far in to refactor the system effectively.
