• Why do so many mathematicians format code so poorly? [closed]

  I have done a fair amount of programming together with mathematicians. Now I am even teaching some high school kids coming from a mathematics background how to program. Most of these people format their code so hideously it's hard to believe. I've even worked with and taught mathematicians who will fight the auto-indenter! Why is this so common amongst mathematicians? BTW, this is one reason I have started teaching Python. Yet still they find ways other than indentation to produce whacked coding styles!

My motivation for this question is that I have a friend's exported XML file with the garbled text which I want to turn into corrected Hebrew text file. The XML export was originally garbled by MySQL import and exports, but I don't have the information needed to fix it or traceback the problem. Thanks.

  I'm trying to put a vector variable inside a struct in Google's Go programming language. This is what I have so far: Want: type Point struct { x, y int } type myStruct struct { myVectorInsideStruct vector; } func main(){ myMyStruct := myStruct{vector.New(0)}; myPoint := Point{2,3}; myMyStruct.myVectorInsideStruct.Push(myPoint); } Have: type Point struct { x, y int } func main(){ myVector := vector.New(0); myPoint := Point{2,3}; myVector.Push(myPoint); } I can get the vector to work in my main function just fine, but I want to encapsulate it inside a struct for easier use.

• How do I use a contact's photo in a table view cell?

  I've got an app that has a table view that displays contact information in each row. I'd like to use the contact's stored image (if there is one available) as the image on the left-hand side of the cell. I've found some sketchy sample code in Apple's documentation, but the address book references some kind of weird data type (CFDataRef) that doesn't appear to correspond to the data types referenced in the table view programming guide (mainly UIImage). This seems like a pretty basic task, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  I have compared gcc assembler output of do{ //some code }while(0); with do{ //some code break; }while(1); The output is equal, with or without optimization but.. It's always that way? No experiment can prove theories, they can only show they are wrong And because (I hope) programming is not an experimental science, and results can be predicted (at least simple things) I want to be sure next time I reeplace a break;}while(1); for the clearer (and less risky) while(0); Thank you for reading

• Which is the future of web development: HTML5 or Silverlight(or other RIA framework)?

  My colleagues have a heated debate on what is the future of web development. One side is supporting HTML5 and the other is supporting Silverlight. There is no conclusion of the debate yet. In my humble opinion as a programmer, HTML5 will not improve programming productivity, while Silverlight will. In my understanding, programmers still need to program in JavaScript to take advantage of HTML5. For Silverlight, we can use C# which is static-type language. A lot of coding defects can be found in compilation time. For HTML5, different browsers might still have different behavior even though there is spec. For Silverlight, generally what works in IE will work the same way in other browsers. Just my thoughts. Any idea on how to choose future direction of web development?

  I am a beginner in Flash Actionscript 3.0 programming. I am trying to create smooth keyboard controls for player movement in a game. I'm currently using addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN) listening for a keyboard key press and then within the handler function moving a graphic by adding a number to its .x or .y property. This creates a slow, sluggish jerk at the beginning. I know there's a smoother, more responsive way to do this but have no idea where to begin. Any help would be appreciated!

  I have vast programming knowledge; C++/C#/ActionScript/ASM/PHP..... so learning the language of SilverLight itself isn't of an issue. To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? • How to debug a running C++ program in Linux?

  Hi I have a question about debugging a running C++ program in Linux. If a programming is already running and can't be interrupted, how to do that. I can find three ways, but I don't know too much about details, I am grateful if any one can elaborate it deeper. 1) we can use GDB by specifying the process ID gdb -p PID In this case, what's the difference between this and attach PID? 2) We can use pstat, however, I am using Ubuntu, no pstat, but only mpstat it seems that mpstat does not provide too much information, and not so many options. 3) check the details information under directory ./proc In this case, just go to the directory with the PID. However, should this be done mannually?

• Preprocessor not skipping asm directives

  I'm programming to a microprocessor (Coldfire) and I don't have access every day to the microprocessor trainer so I want to be able to execute some of my code on the computer. So I'm trying to skip a part of my code when executing on the computer by defining _TEST_. It doesn't work. It tries to compile the asm code and dies whining about not knowing the registers names (they're defined alright compiling against the Coldfire, not my Intel Core Duo). Any ideas why it's not working? or maybe an alternative way to run the code on the pc without commenting it out?. • Need generated UML diagrams for C++ plugin modules

  I need various UML diagrams (sequence/collaboration, class, package, and system component) from some C++ files. However, these files are plugins in a larger programming framework. I have tried generating UML from Rational Rose 7 (2002 version), but I am not very experienced and I am unsure if RR simply cannot produce the diagram, I am doing something wrong, or the diagrams are not rendering correctly because the source files are plugins instead of standalone programs. I have also tried Star Modeler with little success and there seem to be no tutorials on how to generate these models. Is there a simple, bulletproof way to get UML diagrams for C++ files?

• Conditionally setting the font color of an item in a drop down box in JSF

  I'm a newbie to web programming, so please bear with me. I am using JSF 1.2 and I want to conditionally set the color of the items in my drop down list. In other words, I have a collection of items that, along with a key and a value, also have a boolean property, warning, that is dynamically set by user action. I want the drop down to show all of the items, but those whose warning property is set to true should be displayed in red. I assume I have to extend the SelectItem class to add in the boolean property. How do I then conditionally set the color of the font of those items whose warning property is set to true in my JSP pages? Thanks in advance

• Using custom HTML attributes for JavaScript purposes?

  One of my colleagues doesn't like to use HTML classes and ids for javascript/jQuery purpose. Therefore I've seen that he had created custom html attribute such as <div id="myid" class="cssClasses ..." [some-purpose-id]="mycustomId">...</div> I asked him if it was really a good idea and he replied that he considers that classes and Ids should be reserved for styling. Personally, I would have used classes. Some classes would have been used for styling, and some other classes would have been used for programming (jQuery selectors). The idea is to keep things appart also. And of course jQuery could set styling classes but if possible not use them for selection. Of course I also use id when appropriate but since an id is unique on a page, I like to do generic stuff using classes. I would like to know you opinions on the better approach (if there is one). • When designing an event, is it a good idea to prevent listeners from being added twice?

  I am creating an event-based API where a user can subscribe to an event by adding listener objects (as is common in Java or C#). When the event is raised, all subscribed listeners are invoked with the event information. I initially decided to prevent adding an event listener more than once. If a listener is added that already exists in the listener collection, it is not added again. However, after thinking about it some more, it doesn't seem that most event-based structures actually prevent this. Was my initial instinct wrong? I'm not sure which way to go here. I guess I thought that preventing addition of an existing listener would help to avoid a common programming error. Then again, it could also hide a bug that would lead to code being run multiple times when it shouldn't.

I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?
