• Perl 'system' failure messages

- by mmccoo
Say I have this perl "program" called simple.pl: #!/usr/bin/perl use xyz; # xyz is bogus and doesn't exist And I also have this "program", called simple2.pl: #!/usr/bin/perl system("simple.pl"); my $abc = `simple2.pl`; printf("abc %s\n", $abc); for both system and backtick, I get this message: Can't exec "simple.pl": No such file or directory at scripts/perl/simple2.pl line 7. Can't exec "simple2.pl": No such file or directory at scripts/perl/simple2.pl line 9. Not very useful for the user calling simple2.pl. Is there a way to get a more useful message?

• Android application transparency and window sizing at root level

- by ajoburg
Is it possible to create an application with a transparent background on the root task such that you can see the task running beneath it when it is part of a separate stack? Alternatively, is it possible to run an application so the window of the root task is only a portion of the screen instead of the whole screen? I understand how the transparency and window sizing is done with activities that are not the root task and this works fine. However, the root task of an activity seems to always fill the whole screen and be black even when a transparent theme is applied to the application object in the manifest file. ApplicationManifest.xml: <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true" android:theme="@style/Theme.Transparent"> Styles.xml <resources> </resources> Colors.xml <resources> <drawable name="transparent_background">#00000000</drawable> </resources>

• A very weird problem with texbox control in C# .net

- by Kazoom
Well i know textbox is a very simple user control, perhaps the first input control ever made. I have been facing a very frustrating problem with this simple control. I programatically add a textbox in my user control. From ui i am able to edit it like a normal textbox. however, i am not able to read the user inputed value in the program. my program all the time sees the old value with which my text box was initialized. i textchange event getting triggered but the value never gets updated. This seemingly looks to be some innocuous bug in the code, but the program is very simple and it does not seem to be having any bug. Any guidelines on this issue?

• How can I remove duplicate nodes in XQuery?

- by Brabster
I have an XML document I generate on the fly, and I need a function to eliminate any duplicate nodes from it. My function looks like: declare function local:start2() { let $data := local:scan_books() return <books>{$data}</books> }; Sample output is: <books> <book>
XML in 24 hours

</book> <book>
XML in 24 hours

</book> </books> I want just the one entry in my books root tag, and there are other tags, like say pamphlet in there too that need to have duplicates removed. Any ideas? Updated following comments. By unique nodes, I mean remove multiple occurrences of nodes that have the exact same content and structure.

• Newbie question: How do you layout an icon, 2 text lines and a button?

- by Keith Barrows
I am trying to extend a sample I found at http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/layout-tricks-efficiency.html. I am a brand new MonoDroid developer, just installed it yesterday, and trying to jump right into UI design and so far it is not clicking for me completely. I have this main.xml: <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:padding="6dip"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/icon" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_marginRight="6dip" android:src="@drawable/icon" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/secondLine" android:layout_width="200dip" android:layout_height="26dip" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/icon" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:text="Second line which is a long line of text and needs to scroll" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/firstLine" android:layout_width="200dip" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/icon" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_above="@id/secondLine" android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:text="First line" /> /> </RelativeLayout> What I am trying to do is have an icon on the left, 2 lines of text stacked in the middle and a button on the right. When I run this in my emulator I am seeing: The second line is not scrolling. The button does not show up. Is there by any chance a simple WYSIWYG editor for layout? Or is there an app to give me a quick view of my layout XML? Something like FireBug in FireFox would be fine. Barring the slim chance there are UI helpers for Droid, what am I doing wrong? :)

• How do I display a local html file in a UIWebView?

- by Thomas
I have a relatively simple question that I cannot seem to find the answer for. While doing the Google Maps Java API Tutorials, I ran into a problem. I can load an HTML file from the web, but when I try it locally, it just displays the contents of the file instead of running the script. Here's what works: NSString *url = @"http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/v3/examples/geocoding-simple.html"; NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:url]]; [webView loadRequest:request]; I want to store the HTML file locally and run it from the device itself, so I tried: [webView loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"geocoding-simple" ofType:@"html"]isDirectory:NO]]]; and it just displayed the contents of the file. What am I doing wrong here? Thomas

• Embedding two slideshows

- by Jennifer Heidelberg
Hello, I am trying to embedd two slideshows into my flash file. I already managed to integrate one, but I can't integrate another since my knowledge of actionscript is very limited. For people that know Flash well it is a really easy question. What do I have to rename in this script so that I can create a second slideshow, without always calling on the first one. Here is the script for the first slideshow: (I got it from the website where I bought the template for the slideshow from) var loader:Loader = new Loader(); var monoslideshow:Object; loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.CO MPLETE, onLoadComplete); addChild(loader); loader.load(new URLRequest("monoslideshow.swf")); function onLoadComplete(event:Event):void { monoslideshow = event.target.content; monoslideshow.showLogo = false; monoslideshow.setViewport(new Rectangle(730, 20, 700, 660)); var xml:XML = monoslideshow.loadXML(xml); } Thank you very much in advance!! • Implementing a linear, binary SVM (support vector machine)

- by static_rtti
I want to implement a simple SVM classifier, in the case of high-dimensional binary data (text), for which I think a simple linear SVM is best. The reason for implementing it myself is basically that I want to learn how it works, so using a library is not what I want. The problem is that most tutorials go up to an equation that can be solved as a "quadratic problem", but they never show an actual algorithm! So could you point me either to a very simple implementation I could study, or (better) to a tutorial that goes all the way to the implementation details? Thanks a lot!

• Using Tkinter in python to edit the title bar

- by Dan
I am trying to add a custom title to a window but I am having troubles with it. I know my code isn't right but when I run it, it creates 2 windows instead, one with just the title tk and another bigger window with "Simple Prog". How do I make it so that the tk window has the title "Simple Prog" instead of having a new additional window. I dont think I'm suppose to have the Tk() part because when i have that in my complete code, there's an error from tkinter import Tk, Button, Frame, Entry, END class ABC(Frame): def __init__(self,parent=None): Frame.__init__(self,parent) self.parent = parent self.pack() ABC.make_widgets(self) def make_widgets(self): self.root = Tk() self.root.title("Simple Prog")

• Using PHP to store results of a post request

- by Paul M
Im currently working with an API which requires we send our collection details in xml to their server using a post request. Nothing major there but its not working, so I want to output the sent xml to a txt file so I can look at actually whats being sent!! Instead of posting to the API im posting to a document called target, but the xml its outputting its recording seems to be really wrong. Here is my target script, note that the posting script posts 3 items, so the file being written should have details of each post request one after the other. <?php error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', 1); // get the request data... $payload = ''; $fp = fopen('php://input','r'); $output_file = fopen('output.txt', 'w'); while (!feof($fp)) { $payload .= fgets($fp); fwrite($output_file, $payload); } fclose($fp); fclose($output_file); ?> I also tried the following, but this just recorded the last post request so only 1 collection item was recorded in the txt file, instead of all 3 output_file = fopen('output.txt', 'w'); while (!feof($fp)) { $payload .= fgets($fp); } fwrite($output_file, $payload); fclose($fp); fclose($output_file); I know im missing something really obvious, but ive been looking at this all morning!

• Android App Build system differences between Eclipse and Ant?

- by Amy Winarske
The Eclipse build for my 1.6 application project is succeeding and the Ant build is failing. I'm looking for help on why they aren't behaving the same way. We are developing on Mac OSX 10.5.8 with Eclipse 3.5 against SDK 1.6 + Google APIs. There are no setting changes in Eclipse, either at workspace or project level. Similarly, our ant is also a vanilla- flavored unmodified installation of 1.7.1. JDK is 1.5.0_22. The CLASSPATH environment variable is not set. JAVA_HOME is /Library/Java/ Home The application was initially created by a team member using the Eclipse plugins. The application references two jar files, one of which has a dependency on javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlSeeAlso, which is not defined anywhere in our code or in android.jar. The other jar file has an explicit dependency on android.jar. I generated the Ant build file using android update. The Eclipse project builds an apk and runs the application in the emulator. I think this is incorrect behavior. The Android ant project fails to build. I think this is correct behavior. MyClass.java:98: cannot access javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlSeeAlso [javac] file javax/xml/bind/annotation/XmlSeeAlso.class not found Any ideas as to why the two build methods are behaving differently? I would expect them both to fail. Thanks! -Amy

• best way to authenticate and consume web service using phonegap (html5/javascript)

- by Raiss
I am going to develop a phonegap application which is pretty simple. I need to implement an authentication and some simple data transfer back and forth to the phone and server. I prefer to use ASP.NET as a web service and our database is MS SQL but I am not sure what approach should I take to create a secure communication between Phonegap App and webservice. The problem with a simple AJAX request is limitation in cross-domain and I’m not sure if JSONP is a good option. I was wondering if someone can tell me what technology I should use in order to make a semi secure connection which works with PhoneGap (html5, javascript ) and .Net webservice. I understand that it’s a general question but I need to know what technology is the best in such a case. thanks

• Add Today's Date to SharePoint Master Page

- by soniiic
Surely there must be a simple way of putting a simple code block into a master page :( I've tried using the obvious <%= "Hello, World!" %> syntax but code blocks aren't allowed. Then tried a site column, but don't know how to use them. Then tried web zones but master pages can't use them. Tried putting a web part (which are super difficult to make and deploy btw) into the page layout, but it just doesn't render :/ All I want is something nice and simple at the top of my site which shows today's date and the format I want to use is DateTime.Today.ToString("ddd, d MMMM yyyy") (Otherwise I'm resorting to javascript document.write!) Thanks all,

• gwt maven war plugin configuration problem

- by Din
I am developing a gwt application in maven. In this I am using maven war plugin. Everything works fine. When I give mvn install command it builds abc.war file in target folder. • Android Scaled Drawing to ImageView

- by user329999
Newbie question, so there's probably a simple answer to this problem. I'm drawing some simple shapes using canvas.drawCircle(), canvas.drawLine() etc. I originally copied the code from: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/graphics/DrawPoints.html Which extends a View and draws directly to a canvas. It doesn't load a pre-drawn bitmap because I need my application to turn data into a drawing and the user will enter the data. My changes work, but the drawing is too small (or big) and doesn't fill the screen using all the available screen. Ideally I'd rather use something like an ImageView in .XML like so: If that's possible. The documentation seems to imply that I want to set the scaleType as shown in the above .XML which seems like the simple way to do this. If using an ImageView in .XML is a good idea, then I'm lost on how to draw to the ImageView and could use some guidance on doing that task. If that won't work, then I'll need to do some more thinking about how to get my drawing scaled on the screen and basically I'm lazy and would rather have Android do the work for me. Feel free to suggest some other way that's completely different is this is the wrong solution path. :) Thanks.

I've set up cron to run a simple hello world shell script, but it's giving me an error that Google isn't helping me resolve. I've got to be missing something really simple! Here's my crontab: [email protected] SHELL=/bin/bash 30 * * * * * $HOME/hello.sh Here's hello.sh: #!/bin/bash echo HELLO WORLD! I get this error email: /bin/bash: 555: command not found I have tried setting shell to /bin/sh but it makes no difference. I still get an analogous error message.

• What is the best way to determine the path to the ISV directory?

- by Luke Baulch
MSCRM 4.0 Problem: I'm currently storing xml files in the ISV directory along with my web applications. From a plugin (or potentially a seperate app), I need to find an easy way to navigate to the ISV directory to read these xml files. This routine will be called extremely often, so processing minimization should be a strong consideration. Potential solutions: Registry: There is a registry key called 'WebSitePath' with the data 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\CRM'. Could potentially use this to build the path. (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) IIS directory data: Looping through the DirectoryEntries of path '"IIS://localhost/W3SVC"' I could obtain the the web application where description is equal to "Microsoft Dynamics CRM". (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) Webservice: Create one to read and return the data contained in these xml files The webservice would have easy access to its executing directory. Database: Store the data of these files in the database. Help: Can anyone suggest a simpler solution to obtaining and reading a file from the ISV directory? If not, which of the above solutions would be the quickest to process? Thanks for any and all contributions.

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

- by tmo256
I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. Thanks for your input!
