  • CDI 1.1 Public Review and Feedback

    - by reza_rahman
CDI 1.1 is humming along nicely and recently released it's public review draft. Although it's just a point release, CDI 1.1 actually has a lot in it. Some the changes include: The CDI class, which provides programmatic access to CDI facilities from outside a managed bean Ability to veto beans declaratively using @Vetoed Conversations in Servlet requests Application lifecycle events in Java EE Injection of Bean metadata into bean instances Programmatic access to a container provided Producer, InjectionTarget, AnnotatedType Ability to override attributes of a Bean via BeanAttributes Ability to process modules via ProcessModule Ability to wrap the InjectionPoint Honor WEB-INF/classes/META-INF/beans.xml to activate WEB-INF/classes in a bean archive Global ordering and enablement of interceptors and decorators Global selection of alternatives @New deprecated Clarify interceptors and decorators must be implemented using proxying Allow multiple annotated types per Java class Allow Extensions to specify the annotations that they are interested in The CDI 1.1 expert group has a number of open issues that they would like immediate feedback on. These include critical issues like bean visibility, startup events and restricting CDI scans. Read the details here and let your voice be heard!

  • Games for software development teams? [closed]

    - by g.foley
We have been running weekly meetings for the team in the interest of learning. I'd like to mix these up from sit and listen type exercises to something more engaging. So I'm looking for a fun games to play with a team of 10 developers. They are of ranging experience, and the games must provide some kind of insight to some fundamental concept of programming the developers tend to forget. All ideas welcome!

  • How to pronounce "std" as in "std::vector"

    - by Lex Fridman
In C++, the STL (standard template library) includes a namespace std that contains the many data structures and algorithms that we all know and love. I've always pronounced this namespace just like sexually transmitted diseases: S T D. But then I listened to this excellent series of lectures by Stephan T. Lavavej and he pronounces it "stood". Which is the "correct" pronunciation or at least what is that most commonly used one?

  • Why use binary files to stack up different versions on DMSs?

    - by edgarator
I've used both Liferay and Alfresco trying to use them as the Document Management System for an intranet. I noticed the following: They use the file system and the database to store files They use a GUID to name the file on the filesystem and that GUID is used as an Id in the database. The GUID-named file is a binary file The GUID-named binary file stores all versions for a given file The path for the file in the DMS doesn't match the one in the file system The URL makes reference to the GUID when a certain file is requested What I want to know is why is this, and what would be the best way of doing it. Like how to would you create the binary file (zip?), and what parts would you keep in the binary file and what parts would you store in the database (meta-data, path?). I'm assuming some of the benefits of doing it like this. As having the same URL for a file, regardless of its current document path. And having only one file even if the file has changed names over time.

  • What important aspects of Java should I know coming from Python?

    - by Macuser
So, I've been browsing the job market, and it seems almost every programmer position requires either knowledge in the .NET, C#, or Java, and I'm looking to pick up Java, as I am not interesting very much with programming for Windows environments. So, what syntax differences should I look out for (except different class names), and any practices that I should avoid using in Java which is normally used in Python?

  • Is this the place to ask SEO questions [on hold]

    - by user39206
I'm adding business listings to an existing website of which Google has sort of been referencing well but my Meta tags have a lot to be desired! Due to other work commitments I have kind of neglected the site but now think I should put the proper time and effort into getting it just right as it does earn me money. I am a developer so I have all the necessary skills to build the site, it's almost done!. Now I'm just a little worried that I could do something wrong and loose the rapport I've built up with Google in the past or be ban. Especially with the new tags I see like: <link rel=”publisher” href=”https://plus.google.com/[YOUR BUSINESS G+ PROFILE HERE]“/> Really I just want to know for now, is this the place to ask SEO question?

  • Google indexing pages with #! although we don't have any

    - by Benjamin Gruenbaum
Our company has developed a Single Page Application using AngularJS and its routing. Google indexed our site decently with JavaScript but it did not index some pages very well so we have developed an HTML only version. We have followed the Ajax Crawling Specification posted here and have a <meta name='fragment' content='!'> tag and canonical urls. We expect http://www.example.com/foo/bar to be fetched from http://www.example.com/?_escaped_fragment_=/foo/bar. However, we have found out that when we rolled the AJAX specification we now have all pages indexed twice, once with the JavaScript version as http://www.example.com/foo/bar and once with the new version as http://www.example.com/#!/foo/bar. This is harmful to us since it's duplicate content and also mis-representing out site. I have tried looking for similar questions here and in the Google product forum but could not come up with anything.

  • Should I use OpenGL while working with C++?

    - by Paralytic
I am completely new to programming and game development for that matter. I am using the C++ software to create my Game Engine with the help of a beginners guide. I noticed it has a OpenGL option when starting up a new project. I've heard of OpenGL pertaining to game development, not sure what it is though. Should I be using OpenGL when creating my Game Engine? Will it matter if I just start with a blank slate?

    - by Nick Rosencrantz
Is it true what I read that Intel and Motorola are moving from CISC to a programming model more like RISC/MIPS? Why? From the famous book "Computer Architecture" by Hennessay which usually is recommended around here: Recent implementations of the x86 architecture actually translate x86 instruction into simple operation that look like MIPS instuctions.... • Exclude pages from search results based on device class (mobile/desktop)

    - by user32224
We're currently building a new responsive website. While working on the site map, we figured that we don't want to show certain sections on mobile devices. This can be easily done by hiding the navigation parts using CSS/media queries. However, the trouble is that the hidden sites would still show up in search engine results. If a user happens to click on one of these links she might happen to see a badly formatted page as we'd use desktop/tablet only code to show images and video. Is there any way influence the search engines to exclude certain pages if the search is done on a mobile device? Do search engines crawl pages once or with a device specific view twice? Could we set a noindex meta tag for a specific device class?

  • Will Google follow HTML refresh?

    - by yasar11732
I want to move my current Tumblr blog to static HTML blog. Currently I am using a custom domain, I am planning on doing the move when Google sees domain name change. I am considering two options: Buying a hosting service Using GitHub pages Buying a hosting service would probably mean I am going to pay for lots of things that I don't need like PHP, MySQL, e-mail service etc. On the other hand, if I use GitHub pages, I can't use .htaccess file to make 301 redirects. I want to change my URL structure and this is important to me. I was wondering if I use: <meta http-equiv=refresh content="0; url=http://example.com/newurl" /> Would Google see it as 301 redirect, so that I won't use my search engine value?

  • Is it good practice to keep 2 related tables (using auto_increment PK) to have the same Max of auto_increment ID when table1 got modified?

    - by Tum
This question is about good design practice in programming. Let see this example, we have 2 interrelated tables: Table1 textID - text 1 - love.. 2 - men... ... Table2 rID - textID 1 - 1 2 - 2 ... Note: In Table1: textID is auto_increment primary key In Table2: rID is auto_increment primary key & textID is foreign key The relationship is that 1 rID will have 1 and only 1 textID but 1 textID can have a few rID. So, when table1 got modification then table2 should be updated accordingly. Ok, here is a fictitious example. You build a very complicated system. When you modify 1 record in table1, you need to keep track of the related record in table2. To keep track, you can do like this: Option 1: When you modify a record in table1, you will try to modify a related record in table 2. This could be quite hard in term of programming expecially for a very very complicated system. Option 2: instead of modifying a related record in table2, you decided to delete old record in table 2 & insert new one. This is easier for you to program. For example, suppose you are using option2, then when you modify record 1,2,3,....,100 in table1, the table2 will look like this: Table2 rID - textID 101 - 1 102 - 2 ... 200 - 100 This means the Max of auto_increment IDs in table1 is still the same (100) but the Max of auto_increment IDs in table2 already reached 200. what if the user modify many times? if they do then the table2 may run out of records? we can use BigInt but that make the app run slower? Note: If you spend time to program to modify records in table2 when table1 got modified then it will be very hard & thus it will be error prone. But if you just clear the old record & insert new records into table2 then it is much easy to program & thus your program is simpler & less error prone. So, is it good practice to keep 2 related tables (using auto_increment PK) to have the same Max of auto_increment ID when table1 got modified?

  • New domain and submission to search engines

    - by Guandalino
I have registered a new domain with a hosting company. They offer the feature that for each new domain there is an associated placeholder page. Actually it is a "Site not configured page" with some technical text and links to the hosting site. I could: submit its URL to search engines right now remove the page and submit the URL when the site will be online (could be a couple of months) replace the default page with "coming soon" contents and submit the URL opt for simplicity and add a blank html page having a focused and well descriptive title and maybe some meta tag other? I prefer 4 over 3 because at the moment there aren't precise project details to provide. What's the proper way to notify search engines that soon this site will be online, without getting penalized for side effects I'm not considering or aware of?
