• How should I deploy a patch to a Passenger-based production Rails application without downtime?

  I have a Passenger-based production Rails application which has thousands of users. Occasionally we need to apply a code patch (we use git) and the current process for doing this (you can assume there are no data migrations) is: Perform git pull origin [production-branch-name] on the server touch tmp/restart.txt to restart Passenger This allows us to patch the server without having to resort to putting up a maintenance page, which is great, but it doesn't feel quite right since it's not actually a proper 'deployment', and we still need to manually update the revision file and our deployment doesn't appear in the Hoptoad or NewRelic services we use. Ideally I would run cap production deploy and just let the standard Capistrano deployment script take care of everything, but is this a dangerous thing to do without putting up a maintenance page? This deployment process seems to be fairly safe in that the new revision is deployed to a completely separate folder and only right at the end of the process is a symlink re-created to switch the currently deployed version, but I'm still fairly paranoid about this somehow resulting in a lost or failed request.

• PHP reading 'get' veriable that may or may not have been set

  Simply put, if you try to read the value of a get variable, what happens if said variable had not be put into the URL. Example: you request the page test.php, in that file it tries to read the value of $_GET['message']. What happens in this case? dose the value just get returned as ''? Dose this mean, that if I am always expecting a value to be entered, and am not willing to accept a value of '' that I can just do something like $foo = $_GET['bar']; if($foo == ''){ // Handle my 'error' } else { // $foo should now have a value that I can work with } Please bare in mind I know that I could use isset($_GET['bar']) But I don't just want to know if it is set, I don't care if it is or not, I just care if it has a value that is more then just an empty string.

• How to limit a google calendar xml / rss feed by date range (not working!!)

  For the life of me I cannot get my google calendar xml feed to only display events within a certain date range. I know that start-min and start-max are supposed to limit the output (according to these posts: (links to posts deleted because I am a newbie and can only post one hyperlink argh) BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK. It keeps showing lot of things outside the range. I created a sample calendar and made it public. It is some events the first week of april. Can anyone show me how to construct a request that only returns those three events from the first week in april? I'll GLADLY and GRATEFULLY paypal $10 to anyone who helps me break through on this. • Django, Redirecting staff from login to the admin site.

  So my site basically has 2 kinds of ways to login, one of them is for the common users, who get the regular screen that asks them for username and password, the other way its for staff. The staff login should redirect them to the admin site after logging in, but for some reason the redirect doesnt happen, it stays on the same login page. I use this condition on the login view. if user is not None and user.is_active and user.is_staff: auth.login(request,user) return HttpResponseRedirect("/admin/") The admin site its up and running in my url configuration and everything, but i dont know if this is the correct way to redirect to the admin site already on session.   Hi community, I'm interessted, how does Linq2Sql handles a compiled query, that returns IQueryable. If I call an extension method based on a compiled query like "GetEntitiesCompiled().Count()" or "GetEntitiesCompiled().Take(x)". What does Linq2Sql do in the background? This would be very bad, so in this situation I should write a compiled query like "CountEntitiesCompiled". Does he load the result (in this case "GetEntitiesCompiled()") into the memory (mapped to the entity class like "ToList()")? So what situations make sense, when the compiled queries return IQueryable, that query is not able to modify, before request to the Sql-Server. So in my opinion I can just as good return List.   Hi everybody, I’m working on a small kind of log system to a webpage, and I’m having some difficulties with a query I want to do multiple things. I have tried to do some nested / subqueries but can’t seem to get it right. I’ve two tables: User = {userid: int, username} Registered = {userid: int, favoriteid: int} What I need is a query to list all the userid’s and the usernames of each user. In addition, I also need to count the total number of favoriteid’s the user is registered with. A user who is not registered for any favorite must also be listed, but with the favorite count shown as zero. I hope that I have explained my request probably but otherwise please write back so I can elaborate. By the way, the query I’ve tried with look like this: SELECT user.userid, user.username FROM user,registered WHERE user.userid = registered.userid(SELECT COUNT(favoriteid) FROM registered) However, it doesn’t do the trick, unfortunately Kind regards Mestika

• Twitter oauth_callback parameter being ignored!

  Hi guys, I'm trying to get Twitter authentication working on my ASP.NET site. When you create the app on the Twitter website, you have to specify a callback URL, which for sake of argument, I have set to http://mydomain.com I've read the oAuth 1.0a spec, and to override this callback URL with your own custom one you have to send the oauth_callback parameter in the request_token phase (url-encoded of course). So my request URL looks like this: http://twitter.com/oauth/request_token?oauth_callback_url=http%3A%2F%2Fmydomain.com%2Ftwittercallback Supposedly, if all goes to plan, in your response data, you are supposed to receive a new parameter of oauth_callback_confirmed=true in addition to your token and token secret parameters. However, my response comes through as: oauth_token=MYTOKEN&oauth_token_secret=MYTOKENSECRET I know I haven't given you guys the greatest amount to go on, but I'm at my wits end as to why I am not receiving the oauth_callback_confirmed parameter. Without this, my application keeps defaulting back to the callback URL hard-coded on the Twitter website. Please if anyone could help me out, I will be eternally grateful! Thanks, A.

• Routing classic asp and through an MVC application

  We are starting to convert a large classic asp application into MVC (using C#). An additional requirement is, that all classic routes get "translated" to MVC ones ('mydomain.com/productdetail.asp?id=13' should become 'mydomain.com/products/13') even before we start writing the first controller or view. So basically, we want to use the routing from MVC but have the classic asp handle the response. An these are my questions: How to use the new nice urls but have the classic asp handle the construction of the html result? Within the classic asp page, the new MVC url pattern should be used for links. What is the best way of translating the old urls to the new ones and make the accessible within the classic asp site (using COM I guess). When an old/classic url is requested, how would I correctly handle that request so that browsers/searchengines would understand that the page has moved to the new url? Thanks in advance!

  I'm not an NHibernate user; I write a serialization utility library. A user has logged a feature-request that I should handle NHibernate proxy classes, treating them the same as the actual type. At the moment my code is treating them as unexpected inheritance, and throwing an exception. The code won't know in advance about NHibernate (including no reference, but I'm not aftaid of reflection ;-p) Is there a robust / guaranteed way of detecting such proxy types? Apparently DataContractSerializer handles this fine, so I'm hoping it is something pretty simple. Perhaps some interface or [attribute] decoration. Also, during deserialization; at the moment I would be creating the original type (not the NHibernate type). Is this fine for persistence purposes? Or is the proxy type required? If the latter; what is required to create an instance of the proxy type?

  Currently I have two pages: The first page contains an input form, and the 2nd page generates an excel document. The input form's button posts to this 2nd page. What I'd like to do is add a second button which also posts to the 2nd page; however, I'll need requests created from this new button to act differently, which brings me to my question: Is there a way I can tell, from the 2nd page, which button was pressed to submit the request? The main reason I'm asking is I'd like to re-use the 2nd page's logic in parsing the information from the first page if possible; I'd rather not have to copy it to a new page and have the new button post to that.   AJAX is a pain in the ass because it essentially means you'll have to write two sets of similarish code: one for browsers with JavaScript enabled and those without. Not only this, but you have to connect JavaScript events to hook into your models and display the results. And if all that weren't bad enough, you need to send an address change with the request, otherwise the user won't be able to "click back" correctly (if confused look at what happens to the address bar when you click links in GMail). We're searching for something that had the foresight and design goals with all these concerns in mind. Performance and security are also obvious major concerns. We love config-based systems as well, where you don't have to write a lot of code you just drop it into an easily read config format. It's like asking for the holy grail right?

• C++ library for dealing with multiple HTTP connections

  Hi, I'm looking for a library to deal with multiple simultaneous HTTP connections (pref. on a single thread) to use in C++ in Windows so it can be Win32 API based. So far, I have tried cURL (multi interface) which seems to be the most appropriate that I have found but my problem is that I may have a queue of 200 requests but I need to only run 4 of them at a time. This becomes problematic when one request may take 2 seconds and another may take 2 mins as you have to wait on all handles and receive the result of all requests in one block. If anyone knows a way round this it would be very useful. I have also tried rolling my own using WinHTTP but I need to throttle the requests so they would ideally need to be on a single thread and use callbacks for data which WinHTTP does not do. • System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission Exception on New Deployment

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.

• What is a TFS Agile Issue?

  With TFS2010 using the "MSF for Agile Software Development v5" process template, I'm having some difficulty in understanding exactly what an Issue is. The most specific documentation I've been able to find is this. Is an Issue a higher-level item for which we will probably generate a Bug for after some investigation in code/requirements? Or is an Issue something different than a Bug because it has not actually a mistake in code but is more of a critical oversight in design (for example, there was never an attempt to create a datepicker for all date fields and this is a UX issue but not really a bug) and therefore a change request of sorts? Or is it something different?
