  • JavaScript Resource Management Design Pattern

    - by Adam
As a web developer, a common problem I find myself tackling is waiting for something to load before doing something else. In particular, I often hide (using either display: none; or visibility: hidden; depending on the situation) elements while waiting for a background image or a CSS file to load. Consider this example from Last.FM. They overlay a semi-transparant PNG over each album art image so that it looks like it's inside a jewel-case. They let it load when it loads, so depending on your internet speed, you may see the art image by itself (without the overlay) temporarily. In this case, the album art looks fine without the jewel-case effect. But in similar situations, I have found that I don't want the user to see the site's design mangled as resources incrementally load. So, in rare cases I have hidden everything from the user until the whole kit and kaboodle has loaded. But this is often a pain to write out, and may force the user to wait for a pretty long time to see anything (besides "loading..." text). I can think of (and have used on occasion) some obvious solutions/compromises: Use some inline CSS so that as certain parts of the DOM load and render, they will immediately have the correct size/position/etc. Immediately render the navigation part of the site, so that if the user wanted to use the current page purely to get somewhere else, they don't have to wait for the rest to load. Load pixelated images first as placeholders for layout while lazy-loading higher quality images as replacements. Something quirky like using a cute animated gif to distract the user during a "loading..." phase. Show useful information as a reference while loading the full UI. (Something akin to Gmail Inbox Preview, etc.) (Sorry if my question was basically just asked and answered...) Despite all of these ideas, I still find myself hoping there are better ways of doing some of these things. So I guess what I'm looking for is some inspiration and/or any creative ways of dealing with this problem that you guys may have seen out in the wild.

  • If you're not supposed to use Regular Expressions to parse HTML, then how are HTML parsers written?

    - by Andy E
I see questions every day asking how to parse or extract something from some HTML string and the first answer/comment is always "Don't use RegEx to parse HTML, lest you feel the wrath!" (that last part is sometimes omitted). This is rather confusing for me, I always thought that in general, the best way to parse any complicated string is to use a regular expression. So how does a HTML parser work? Doesn't it use regular expressions to parse. One particular argument for using a regular expression is that there's not always a parsing alternative (such as JavaScript, where DOMDocument isn't a universally available option). jQuery, for instance, seems to manage just fine using a regex to convert a HTML string to DOM nodes. Not sure whether or not to CW this, it's a genuine question that I want to be answered and not really intended to be a discussion thread.

  • Zend_Soap_Client doesn't work with proxy

    - by understack
    I'm accessing a SOAP web service like : $wsdl_url = 'http://abslive3.timesgroup.com:8888/clsRSchedule.soap?wsdl' ; $client = new Zend_Soap_Client($wsdl_url, array('proxy_host'=>"http://virtual-browser.25u.com" , 'proxy_port'=>80)); Since my shared server blocks port 8888, I'm using this proxy server. But Zend Soap Client tries to directly connect it. Exception information: Message: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from 'http://abslive3.timesgroup.com:8888/clsRSchedule.soap?wsdl' : failed to load external entity "http://abslive3.timesgroup.com:8888/clsRSchedule.soap?wsdl" Stack trace: #0 /home/..../library/Zend/Soap/Client/Common.php(51): SoapClient->SoapClient('http://abslive3...', Array) #1 /home/..../library/Zend/Soap/Client.php(1024): Zend_Soap_Client_Common->__construct(Array, 'http://abslive3...', Array) #2 /home/..../library/Zend/Soap/Client.php(1180): Zend_Soap_Client->_initSoapClientObject() #3 /home/..../library/Zend/Soap/Client.php(1104): Zend_Soap_Client->getSoapClient() #4 [internal function]: Zend_Soap_Client->__call('ReturnDataSet', Array) What am I doing wrong?

  • ASP.Net Cross Page Posting

    - by John
Currently I have two pages: The first page contains an input form, and the 2nd page generates an excel document. The input form's button posts to this 2nd page. What I'd like to do is add a second button which also posts to the 2nd page; however, I'll need requests created from this new button to act differently, which brings me to my question: Is there a way I can tell, from the 2nd page, which button was pressed to submit the request? The main reason I'm asking is I'd like to re-use the 2nd page's logic in parsing the information from the first page if possible; I'd rather not have to copy it to a new page and have the new button post to that. Thanks!

  • Why am I getting this WSDL SOAP error with authorize.net?

    - by Chad Johnson
I have my script email me when there is a problem creating a recurring transaction with authorize.net. I received the following at 5:23AM Pacific time: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from 'https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl' : failed to load external entity "https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl" And of course, when I did exactly the same thing that the user did, it worked fine for me. Does this mean authorize.net's API is down? Their knowledge base simply sucks and provides no information whatsoever about this problem. I've contacted the company, but I'm not holding my breath for a response. Google reveals nothing. Looking through their code, nothing stands out. Maybe an authentication error? Has anyone seen an error like this before? What causes this?

  • How can I embed firefox in a GUI application?

    - by PeniWize
Has anyone ever embedded the firefox web browser technology in their own [unmanaged] C/C++ GUI application in the same way that IE can be embedded as a COM object? (I would like to do this on Linux, not Windows). Are there "better" alternatives to firefox? I'm open to anything as long as I can use it with non-GPL code. My needs are fairly basic; I only need fundamental HTML parsing and display of static local files, but I'd take advantage of more sophisticated technology, if I can get it. I'd like to be able to use JavaScript, but I can get by without it.

  • Double encoded url being fully decoded in ASP.NET

    - by Brad R
I have just come across something that is quite strange and yet I haven't found any mention on the interwebs of others having the same problem. If I hit my ASP.NET application with a double encoded url then the Request["myQueryParam"] will do a double decode of the query for me. This is not desirable as I have double encoded my query string for a good reason. Can others confirm I'm not doing something obviously wrong, and why this would happen. A solution to prevent it, without doing some nasty query string parsing, would be great too! As an example if you hit the url: http://localhost/MyApp?originalUrl=http%3a%2f%2flocalhost%2fAction%2fRedirect%3fUrl%3d%252fsomeUrl%253futm_medium%253dabc%2526utm_source%253dabc%2526utm_campaign%253dabc (For reference %25 is the % symbol) Then look at the Request["originalUrl"] (page or controller) the string returned is: http://localhost/Action/Redirect?Url=/someUrl?utm_medium=abc&utm_source=abc&utm_campaign=abc I would expect: http://localhost/Action/Redirect?Url=%2fsomeUrl%3futm_medium%3dabc%26utm_source%3dabc%26utm_campaign%3dabc I have also checked in Fiddler and the URL is being passed to the server correctly (one possible culprit could have been the browser decoding the URL before sending).

  • Best way to parse command line arguments in C#

    - by Paul Stovell
When building console applications that take parameters, you can use the arguments passed to Main(string[] args). In the past I've simply indexed/looped that array and done a few regular expressions to extract the values. However, when the commands get more complicated, the parsing can get pretty ugly. More recently, I built the world's simplest Backus-Naur Form parser in C# to parse the arguments. It does the job, but it also feels like overkill. So I'm interested in: Libraries that you use Patterns that you use Assume the commands always adhere to common standards such as answered here.

  • How to use an UpdatePanel inside a Reapeater ItemTemplate with a HTML Table

    - by vanslly
    I want to allow the user to edit by data by row, so only need content updated by row. I managed to achieve this by using a Repeater with a UpdatePanel in the ItemTemplate. Using a div <asp:ScriptManager ID="ctlScriptManager" runat="server" /> <asp:Repeater ID="ctlMyRepeater" runat="server"> <ItemTemplate> <div> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="ctlUpdatePanel" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblName" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("Name") %>' /> <asp:LinkButton ID="btnRename" runat="server" CommandArgument='<%# Eval("ID") %>' CommandName="Rename">Rename...</asp:LinkButton> </ContentTemplate> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnRename" EventName="Click" /> </Triggers> </asp:UpdatePanel> </div> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> But, I want to use a table to ensure structure and spacing and CSS styling wasn't doing it for me, but when I use a table everything goes whacky. Using a Table <asp:ScriptManager ID="ctlScriptManager" runat="server" /> <table> <asp:Repeater ID="ctlMyRepeater" runat="server"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="ctlUpdatePanel" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <tr> <td> <asp:Label ID="lblName" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("Name") %>' /> </td> <td> <asp:LinkButton ID="btnRename" runat="server" CommandArgument='<%# Eval("ID") %>' CommandName="Rename">Rename...</asp:LinkButton> </td> </tr> </ContentTemplate> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnRename" EventName="Click" /> </Triggers> </asp:UpdatePanel> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> </table> What's the best way to solve this problem? I prefer using a table, because I really want to enfore structure without reliance on CSS. Thanks in advance.

  • Visual Studio error on valid SQL

    - by Sam
I'm getting an annoying error in visual studio for SQL that executes fine. SELECT InvoiceLines.LineID, InvoiceLines.InvoiceID, InvoiceLines.Text, InvoiceLines.Rate, InvoiceLines.Count, InvoiceLines.Rate * InvoiceLines.Count AS LineTotal, ((InvoiceLines.Rate * InvoiceLines.Count) * (1 + Invoices.VatRate / 100)) * (1 - CAST(Invoices.Discount AS money) * InvoiceLines.ApplyDiscount / 100) AS LineTotalIncVat, InvoiceLines.ApplyDiscount FROM InvoiceLines LEFT JOIN Invoices ON Invoices.InvoiceID = InvoiceLines.InvoiceID What LineTotalIncVat is trying to do is compute the total for the invoice item while adding the vat and subtracting the discount, and yes, probably better to do this in code (would if I could) The error visual studio gives is: There was an error parsing the query [token line number =1, token line offset =14, token in error = InvoiceLines] Even though it will validate and execute without a problem in the query builder...

  • How to parse a text file and write the result to an xls file?

    - by Bk
Hi all i am a junior level SQL developer. I have a situation where I have a text file with 1100 lines of a search result with each line containing a file path and a stored procedure associated with that file. Each line has a structure like the one below: abc\def\ghi\***.cs(40): jkl=******.*****.******, "proc_pqrst", parms); Where abc\def\ghi\***.cs is file path of the file ***.cs. The stored procedure names begin with proc_. I have to extract the ***.cs and the corresponding stored procedure name begining with proc_ and write them to a .xls file. Can some body help me in writing the parsing program to do this? Also can I get a detailed outline on where should I write the code for c# and where should I compile it? This could be a great help as I don't have any knowledge of C#. Thank you, BK.

  • MarkupBuilder using list

    - by tathamr
I am currently using sql.row("statement") and storing to a list. I then am trying to setup my xml file using MarkupBuilder. Is there a better way than iterating over the list poping off an item and then parsing it to add my different column names and values? What is stored by list entry is ID='X' Period='Yearly' Lengh='test' So the XML would be something similar to: <table name='test'> <row> <column name=ID>X</column> <column name=Period>Yearly</column> <column name=Length>test</column> </row> </table>

  • ASP:LinkButton and Eval

    - by sgibbons
I'm using an ASP:LinkButton inside of an ItemTemplate inside of a TemplateField in a GridView. For the command argument for the link button I want to pass the ID of the row from the datasource that the gridview is bound to, so I'm doing something like this: <asp:LinkButton ID="viewLogButton" CommandName="viewLog" CommandArgument="<%#Eval("ID")%>" Text="View Log" runat="server"/> Unfortunately, the resulting HTML is this: <asp:LinkButton ID="viewLogButton" CommandName="viewLog" CommandArgument="3" Text="View Log" runat="server"/> It seems that it is parsing the Eval() properly, but this is somehow causing it not to parse the LinkButton tag and just dump it out as literal text. Does anyone know: a) why this is happening and, b) what a good solution to this problem is?

  • Determine if a url matches a Route, and pull out the terms if it does

    - by Kevin Montrose
I've got a big old log file I'm trying to break down in terms of routes. Essentially, I'm getting input of a path (/questions/31415 for example) and a list of all the registered Routes. What I want out is a Route and the parameters specified in the route (so in, /questions/{id}/{answer} I'd get id and answers out). I've got a working solution that basically generates a nasty bit of regex on the fly with named groups to do matching and parsing all-in-one. My gut tells me this is a brittle way to do it, and frankly there has to be a better way, right?
