• Recommendations to handle development and deployment of php web apps using shared project code

  I am wondering what the best way (for a lone developer) is to develop a project that depends on code of other projects deploy the resulting project to the server I am planning to put my code in svn, and have shared code as a separate project. There are problems with svn:externals which I cannot fully estimate. I've read subversion:externals considered to be an anti-pattern, and How do you organize your version control repository, but there is one special thing with php-projects (and other interpreted source code): there is no final executable resulting from your libraries. External dependencies are thus always on raw source code. Ideally I really want to be able to develop simultaneously on one project and the projects it dependends on. Possible way: Check out a projects' dependency in a sub folder as a working copy of the trunk. Problems I foresee: When you want to deploy a project, you might want to freeze its dependencies, right? The dependency code should not end up as a duplicate in the projects repository, I think. *(update1: I additionally assume svn:ignore will pose problems if I cannot fall back on symlinks, see my comment) I am still looking for suggestions that do not require the use junction points. They are a sort of unsupported hack in winxp, which may break some programs* This leads me to the last part of the question (as one has influence on the other): how do you deploy apps whith such dependencies? I've looked into BuildOut for Python, but it seems to be tightly related to the python ecosystem (resolving and fetching python modules from the web etc). I am very eager to learn about your best practices.

• JavaME - LWUIT images eat up all the memory

  Hi, I'm writing a MIDlet using LWUIT and images seem to eat up incredible amounts of memory. All the images I use are PNGs and are packed inside the JAR file. I load them using the standard Image.createImage(URL) method. The application has a number of forms and each has a couple of labels an buttons, however I am fairly certain that only the active form is kept in memory (I know it isn't very trustworthy, but Runtime.freeMemory() seems to confirm this). The application has worked well in 240x320 resolution, but moving it to 480x640 and using appropriately larger images for UI started causing out of memory errors to show up. What the application does, among other things, is download remote images. The application seems to work fine until it gets to this point. After downloading a couple of PNGs and returning to the main menu, the out of memory error is encountered. Naturally, I looked into the amount of memory the main menu uses and it was pretty shocking. It's just two labels with images and four buttons. Each button has three images used for style.setIcon, setPressedIcon and setRolloverIcon. Images range in size from 15 to 25KB but removing two of the three images used for every button (so 8 images in total), Runtime.freeMemory() showed a stunning 1MB decrease in memory usage. The way I see it, I either have a whole lot of memory leaks (which I don't think I do, but memory leaks aren't exactly known to be easily tracked down), I am doing something terribly wrong with image handling or there's really no problem involved and I just need to scale down. If anyone has any insight to offer, I would greatly appreciate it.

  I am trying to figure out how to do a series of queries to get the updates, deletes and inserts segregated into their own calls. I have 2 tables, one in each of 2 databases. One is a Read Only feeds database and the other is the T-SQL R/W Production source. There are a few key columns in common between the two. What I am doing to setup is this: List<model.AutoWithImage> feedProductList = _dbFeed.AutoWithImage.Where(a => a.ClientID == ClientID).ToList(); List<model.vwCompanyDetails> companyDetailList = _dbRiv.vwCompanyDetails.Where(a => a.ClientID == ClientID).ToList(); foreach (model.vwCompanyDetails companyDetail in companyDetailList) { List<model.Product> productList = _dbRiv.Product.Include("Company").Where(a => a.Company.CompanyId == companyDetail.CompanyId).ToList(); } Now that I have a (source) list of products from the feed, and an existing (target) list of products from my prod DB I'd like to do 3 things: Find all SKUs in the feed that are not in the target Find all SKUs that are in both, that are active feed products and update the target Find all SKUs that are in both, that are inactive and soft delete from the target What are the best practices for doing this without running a double loop? Would prefer a LINQ 4 Objects solution as I already have my objects. EDIT: BTW, I will need to transfer info from feed rows to target rows in the first 2 instances, just set a flag in the last instance. TIA

• Ruby Design Problem for SQL Bulk Inserter

  This is a Ruby design problem. How can I make a reusable flat file parser that can perform different data scrubbing operations per call, return the emitted results from each scrubbing operation to the caller and perform bulk SQL insertions? Now, before anyone gets narky/concerned, I have written this code already in a very unDRY fashion. Which is why I am asking any Ruby rockstars our there for some assitance. Basically, everytime I want to perform this logic, I create two nested loops, with custom processing in between, buffer each processed line to an array, and output to the DB as a bulk insert when the buffer size limit is reached. Although I have written lots of helpers, the main pattern is being copy pasted everytime. Not very DRY! Here is a Ruby/Pseudo code example of what I am repeating. lines_from_file.each do |line| line.match(/some regex/).each do |sub_str| # Process substring into useful format # EG1: Simple gsub() call # EG2: Custom function call to do complex scrubbing # and matching, emitting results to array # EG3: Loop to match opening/closing/nested brackets # or other delimiters and emit results to array end # Add processed lines to a buffer as SQL insert statement @buffer << PREPARED INSERT STATEMENT # Flush buffer when "buffer size limit reached" or "end of file" if sql_buffer_full || last_line_reached @dbc.insert(SQL INSERTS FROM BUFFER) @buffer = nil end end I am familiar with Proc/Lambda functions. However, because I want to pass two separate procs to the one function, I am not sure how to proceed. • How to jQuery plugin effects to items created later in the DOM

  How do I apply jQuery plugin effects to items that are created by an event? So, what I am attempting to do is have all uls throughout a site use the jquery.scroll.js plugin for styling. I currently have it working on all active uls. However, there are some category/subcategory sections. I am still new to writing any jQuery on my own and there is a leap in logic that I don't understand on applying plugins to items when they are loaded later. In the real example, users click a category from a ul and a sub category is loaded via Rails and JSON. For a light sample, I made a jsfiddle that simulates the issue that I run into. The category ul is styled correctly, but the subcategory ul doesn't pick up the styling. I'm hoping for some assistance not just in whipping up some code to fix it, but in pointing me in the direction of what I need to learn for this functionality. http://jsfiddle.net/dandenney/25R8F/1/ Thank you in advance!

• SQLce DAL Linq to Sql or EntityFramework

  Hi, I'm learning databases, using SqlCe, and need business object to database mapping. Currently I try to decide if to use Linq to Sql, or EntityFramework. (I understand a bit L2S, but haven't familiarized with EF yet) The program will only be debeloped and used by myself, so I have good control of the priorities: I don't need to consider potential change of database type or data storage type, as I'm quite certain SQLce will stay sufficient. I DO expect continued development and changes to the data scheme while the program is in active use; change business object properties (Hence database columns), and possibly overall table scheme. So old data must be transported to new scheme. I also want to keep a decent degree of layer separation DAL/BLL, although this may not be necessary, it is good for me to learn these principles. My question is: With these priorities, would I have any benefit by choosing either Linq2Sql vs. EntityFramwork? (and please explain why) Btw, the project involves very simple table scheme with only 4-5 tables and very simple relations. Thanks!

• Using git filter-branch to remove commits by their commit message

  In our repository we have a convention where every commit message starts with a certain pattern: Redmine #555: SOME_MESSAGE We also do a bit of rebasing to bring in the potential release branch's changes to a specific issue's branch. In other words, I might have branch "foo-555", but before I merge it in to branch "pre-release" I need to get any commits that pre-release has that foo-555 doesn't (so that foo-555 can fast-forward merge in to pre-release). However, because pre-release sometimes changes, we sometimes wind up with situations where you bring in a commit from pre-release, but then that commit later gets removed from pre-release. It's easy to identify commits that came from pre-release, because the number from their commit message won't match the branch number; for instance, if I see "Redmine #123: ..." in my foo-555 branch, I know that its not a commit from my branch. So now the question: I'd like to remove all of the commits that "don't belong" to a branch; in other words, any commit that: Is in my foo-555 branch, but not in the pre-release branch (pre-release..foo-555) Has a commit message that doesn't start with "Redmine #555" but of course "555" will vary from branch to branch. Is there any way to use filter-branch (or any other tool) to accomplish this? Currently the only way I can see to do it is to do go an interactive rebase ("git rebase -i") and manually remove all the "bad" commits.

• Resolve php endless recursion issue

  Hey all, I'm currently running into an endless recursion situation. I'm implementing a message service that calls various object methods.. it's quite similar to observer pattern.. Here's whats going on: Dispatcher.php class Dispatcher { ... public function message($name, $method) { // Find the object based on the name $object = $this->findObjectByName($name); // Slight psuedocode.. for ease of example if($this->not_initialized($object)) $object = new $object(); // This is where it locks up. } return $object->$method(); ... } class A { function __construct() { $Dispatcher->message("B", "getName"); } public function getName() { return "Class A"; } } class B { function __construct() { // Assume $Dispatcher is the classes $Dispatcher->message("A", "getName"); } public function getName() { return "Class B"; } } It locks up when neither object is initialized. It just goes back and forth from message each other and no one can be initialized. I'm looking for some kind of queue implementation that will make messages wait for each other.. One where the return values still get set. I'm looking to have as little boilerplate code in class A and class B as possible Any help would be immensely helpful.. Thanks! Matt Mueller

  I have a value in a properties file that I want to increment while the build is running. The goal is to copy a set of files and append a number to the front of each in order to maintain the order in which they were copied into the directory. • Apply CSS style to anchor problem

  Using jquery I have a clicking tab mechanism that are nothing but anchor tags that return false but call javascript functions to run some events on the page. The problem is I am using jquery to apply an opacity style to the active anchor. and the other sibling anchor get a lesser opacity view. My code looks like this $("#menutab li a").click(function(){ $(this).animate({opacity:'1'},1000); $(this).siblings().animate({opacity:'.25'},1000); } I would think this code would act only on the clicked element and apply that css style to that element and the other style to the other anchor tags except the clicked one. It kind of does that, but also what it does is leave the earlier clicked element to opacity =1, so if I click an element it sets it opacity to 1 and then if I click another one it sets it opacity to 1 while leave the earlier clicked one to 1 also instead of setting it to .25 like the others. Edit: I changed the above code to: $("#menutab ul li").click(function(){ $(this).children().animate({opacity:'1'},1000); $(this).siblings().children().animate({opacity:'.25'},1000); }); and now I get the desired effect, except that when the first anchor in the list is clicked doesn't follow the event rules, When the first one is clicked its as if, the click event is not triggered, because no opacity style changes. which I don't understand.

• Can Delphi dragging be "promoted" to docking?

  I have a TPageControl whose pages are all various forms that are attached using ManualDock(). The user should be able to rearrange the tabs by dragging them, which works already. It should however also be possible to undock the docked forms. For now I have the following code: procedure TMainForm.PageControlMouseDown(Sender: TObject; Button: TMouseButton; Shift: TShiftState; X, Y: Integer); begin if (Button = mbLeft) and (Shift * [ssShift, ssCtrl] = []) and PageControl.DockSite then begin PageControl.BeginDrag(False, 32); end; end; If either the Shift or the Ctrl key are held down, then a docking operation will be started, otherwise the tabs can be rearranged by dragging them. Using the keys as modifiers is awkward though. Is there any way to cancel the active drag operation when the mouse cursor is outside of the tab area of the page control, and start docking the child form? This is with Delphi 2009.

• Sharepoint user details not visible to other users

  I am managing a SharePoint site that uses Form Based Authentication. We have several generic lists, document libraries and active task lists that users can create update and delete. Users can use the people pickers to select/search for everyone. But the users cannot see other users names, email addresses etc. in display lists or the people pickers. If I log in as the site collection administrator, I can see everyones details. So I know the data is available. Updated details on this problem (non-administrators) SharePoint users cannot see other users information. Example: User A assigns a task to user B. User A creates a new task and uses the people picker to find user B. User B is only visible by the login name “bname” and any information about user B is not visible or searchable within the people picker. Once user B is assigned the task, user A no longer sees the name in the task list – even though user A created it. No modified by, created by, assigned to or owner field data is visible to non-administrator users. Facts: Extranet site is configured to use Forms Based Authentication. • steps to fix a project that won't compile

  Hi Pulling my hair out in trying to get a simple window based project to compile. I am running both 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 versions of Xcode. The latter is set up in a separate folder. Originally I used the latter to create and compile my project against the new 4.0 sdk. It compiled fine. Then I made the mistake of deleting some sdks I thought I no longer needed. Ever since I can no longer compile. Right now I get a dozen or so errors similar to the following "_OBJC_CLASS_$_CATransition", referenced from: objc-class-ref-to-CATransition in ViewTransitionsAppDelegate.o My active executable is the iphone simulator 4 and Base SDK is iPhone device 3.0. I tried reinstalling the xcode3.2.3 installer, no difference. I'm totally stymied, as my project WAS working and compiling fine, both to the simulator and external device. Are there any best practices or recommended steps in fixing or rebuilding a project when it won't compile? Any help welcome!

• Rackspace Cloud rewrite jpg causes Session reset

  This may be the .Net version of this question. I have an image script with the following: ... Response.WriteFile(filename); Response.End(); I am rewriting .jpg files using the following rewrite rule in web.config: <rule name="Image Redirect" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="^product-images/(.*).jpg" /> <conditions> <add input="{REQUEST_URI}" pattern="\.(jp?g|JP?G)$" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" redirectType="SeeOther" url="/product-images/ProductImage.aspx?path=product-images/{tolower:{R:1}}.jpg" /> </rule> It basically just rewrites the image path into a query parameter. The problem is that (intermittently of course) Mosso returns a new Asp Session cookie which breaks the whole world. Directly accessing a static .jpg file does not cause this problem. Directly accessing the image script does not cause it either. Only rewriting a .jpg file to the .aspx script causes the Session loss. Things I have tried (From the Rackspace doc How can I bypass the cache?) I added Private cacheability to the image script itself: Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Private); I tried adding these cache-disabling nodes to web.config: <staticContent> <clientCache cacheControlMode="DisableCache" /> </staticContent> and <httpProtocol> <customHeaders> <add name="Cache-Control private" value="Cache-Control private" </customHeaders> </httpProtocol> The Solution I need The browser cache cannot be disabled. This means potential solutions involving Cache.SetNoStore() or HttpCacheability.NoCache will not work.

Instead of have a static list generated when I saved the content, if I add more keyword in the future, then the text will become more interactive. My main concerne and question is how can I create a efficient enough process to do it ? Should I store all the db entry in an array and compare them ? Do an sql query for each word (seems to be crazy) Dump the table in a file and use a very long regex or a "grep -f pattern data" way of doing it? Or or or or I'm sure it must be a better way of doing it, just don't have a clue about it, or maybe this will be far too resource un-friendly and I should avoid doing such things. Cheers!

  I'm writing an application in WPF using the MVVM pattern. In my application I've got an IPopupWindowService which I use to create a popup dialog window. So to show a ViewModel in a popup window you'd do something like this: var container = ServiceLocator.Current.GetInstance<IUnityContainer>(); var popupService = container.Resolve<IPopupWindowService>(); var myViewModel = container.Resolve<IMyViewModel>(); popupService.Show((ViewModelBase)myViewModel); This is all well and good. What I want to do is be able to set the MinHeight and MinWidth on the View bound to myViewModel and have the popup window use those settings so that a user cannot make the window smaller than its contents will allow. At the moment when the user shrinks the window the contents stops resizing but the window doesn't. • WCF service reference namespace differs from original

  I'm having a problem regarding namespaces used by my service references. I have a number of WCF services, say with the namespace MyCompany.Services.MyProduct (the actual namespaces are longer). As part of the product, I'm also providing a sample C# .NET website. This web application uses the namespace MyCompany.MyProduct. During initial development, the service was added as a project reference to the website and uses directly. I used a factory pattern that returns an object instance that implements MyCompany.Services.MyProduct.IMyService. So far, so good. Now I want to change this to use an actual service reference. After adding the reference and typing MyCompany.Services.MyProduct in the namespace textbox, it generates classes in the namespace MyCompany.MyProduct.MyCompany.Services.MyProduct. BAD! I don't want to have to change using directives in several places just because I'm using a proxy class. So I tried prepending the namespace with global::, but that is not accepted. Note that I hadn't even deleted the original assembly references yet, and "reuse types" is enabled, but no reusing was done, apparently. However, I don't want to keep the assembly references around in my sample website for it to work anyway. The only solution I've come up with so far is setting the default namespace for my web application to MyCompany (because it cannot be empty), and adding the service reference as Services.MyProduct. Suppose that a customer wants to use my sample website as a starting point, and they change the default namespace to OtherCompany.Whatever, this will obviously break my workaround. Is there a good solution to this problem? To summarize: I want to generate a service reference proxy in the original namespace, without referencing the assembly. Note: I have seen this question, but there was no solution provided that is acceptable for my use case.   I have a list that I want to precede on each line with a small image. The CSS: .left div.arrow{background-image: url(../images/design/box.png); float:left; height:15px; width:15px; margin-right:2px;} .left a.list:link, a:visited, a:active {color:black; font-size:0.8em; text-decoration:none; display:block; float:left;} The HTML: <div class="panel">My quick links</div> <div class="arrow"></div> <a href="/messages.php?p=new" class="list">Send a new message</a> <br /> <div class="arrow"></div> <a href="/settings.php#password" class="list">Change my password</a> <br /> <div class="arrow"></div> <a href="/settings.php#picture" class="list">Upload a new site image</a> <br /> As you can see, each image should go before the writing. On the first line, the text "Send a new message" has the preceeding image. However, each line afterwards has the image at the end. So "Send a new message" has an image at the start and finish. It is like the images are staying at the end of the previous line. Any ideas?

  I have two tables of concern here: users and race_weeks. User has many race_weeks, and race_week belongs to User. Therefore, user_id is a fk in the race_weeks table. I need to perform some challenging math on fields in the race_weeks table in order to return users with the most all-time points. Here are the fields that we need to manipulate in the race_weeks table. races_won (int) races_lost (int) races_tied (int) points_won (int, pos or neg) recordable_type(varchar, Robots can race, but we're only concerned about type 'User') Just so that you fully understand the business logic at work here, over the course of a week a user can participate in many races. The race_week record represents the summary results of the user's races for that week. A user is considered active for the week if races_won, races_lost, or races_tied is greater than 0. Otherwise the user is inactive. So here's what we need to do in our query in order to return users with the most points won (actually net_points_won): Calculate each user's net_points_won (not a field in the DB). To calculate net_points, you take (1000 * count_of_active_weeks) - sum(points__won). (Why 1000? Just imagine that every week the user is spotted a 1000 points to compete and enter races. We want to factor-out what we spot the user because the user could enter only one race for the week for 100 points, and be sitting on 900, which we would skew who actually EARNED the most points.) This one is a little convoluted, so let me know if I can clarify further.

• .Net Entity Framework & POCO ... querying full table problem

  I'm attempting to implement a repository pattern with my poco objects auto generated from my edmx. In my repository class, I have: IObjectSet<E> _objectSet; private IObjectSet<E> objectSet { get { if (_objectSet == null) { _objectSet = this._context.CreateObjectSet<E>(); } return _objectSet; } } public IQueryable<E> GetQuery(Func<E, bool> where) { return objectSet.Where(where).AsQueryable<E>(); } public IList<E> SelectAll(Func<E, bool> where) { return GetQuery(where).ToList(); } Where E is the one of my POCO classes. When I trace the database and run this: IList<Contact> c = contactRepository.SelectAll(r => r.emailAddress == "[email protected]"); It shows up in the sql trace as a select for everything in my Contact table. Where am I going wrong here? Is there a better way to do this? Does an objectset not lazy load... so it omitted the where clause? • How to replace pairs of strings in two files to identical IDs?

  Sorry if the title is not very intelligible, I couldn't come up with anything better. Hopefully my explanation is clear enough: I have a pair of rather large log files with very similar content, except that some strings are different between the two. A couple of examples: UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc | UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a JBossRMIClassLoader@13c2d7f | JBossRMIClassLoader@191777e That is, wherever the first file contains UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc, the second contains UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a, and so on. [Update] There are about 40 distinct pairs of such identifiers.[/Update] I want to replace these with identical IDs so that I can spot the really important differences between the two files. I.e. I want to replace all occurrences of both UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc in file1 and UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a in file2 with UnifiedClassLoader3@1; all occurrences of both JBossRMIClassLoader@13c2d7f in file1 and JBossRMIClassLoader@191777e in file2 with JBossRMIClassLoader@2 etc. Using the Cygwin shell, so far I managed to list all different identifiers occurring in one of the files with grep -o -e 'ClassLoader[0-9]*@[0-9a-f][0-9a-f]*' file1.log | sort | uniq However, now the original order is lost, so I don't know which is the pair of which ID in the other file. With grep -n I can get the line number, so the sort would preserve the order of appearance, but then I can't weed out the duplicate occurrences. Unfortunately grep can not print only the first match of a pattern. I figured I could save the list of identifiers produced by the above command into a file, then iterate over the patterns in the file with grep -n | head -n 1, concatenate the results and sort them again. The result would be something like 2 ClassLoader3@19518cc 137 ClassLoader@13c2d7f 563 ClassLoader3@1267649 ... Then I could (either manually or with sed itself) massage this into a sed command like sed -e 's/ClassLoader3@19518cc/ClassLoader3@2/g' -e 's/ClassLoader@13c2d7f/ClassLoader@137/g' -e 's/ClassLoader3@1267649/ClassLoader3@563/g' file1.log > file1_processed.log and similarly for file2. However, before I start, I would like to verify that my plan is the simplest possible working solution to this. Is there any flaw in this approach? Is there a simpler way?

• Mac OS X Status Bar Application - Hiding it from Cmd/Alt menu?

  I'm trying to whip up a simple little Status Bar Application in Obj-C/Cocoa. So I have done it pragmatically - declaring an NSStatusItem, adding it to the NSStatusBar and then giving it a NSMenu object. A bit like this... NSStatusBar *bar = [NSStatusBar systemStatusBar]; theItem = [bar statusItemWithLength:NSVariableStatusItemLength]; [theItem retain]; [theItem setTitle: NSLocalizedString(@"Tablet",@"")]; [theItem setHighlightMode:YES]; [theItem setMenu:theMenu]; (Example taken from "Status Bar Programming Topics", Apple Documentation) Now ideally, I'd like this application to run and not be accessible from the CMD/ALT window changing "menu" (for lack of a better word), I've seen applications do it before and would like that really. The idea is I just want it to be accessible from every window, whilst not having its own NSMenu on the status bar, and whilst not being able to have it as the active application ( - so its not able to take over the whole Status Bar, and its not able to be seen through CMD/ALT) Additionally, I was wondering if the StatusBarItem supports the ability to drag-n-drop an item onto it? I'm not sure if thats a limitation of the NSStatusBar though. I've read up on deamons and agents, but that seems far too low level/over kill for such a simplistic app! Cheers in advance!

• Are monads Writer m and Either e categorically dual?

  I noticed there is a dual relation between Writer m and Either e monads. If m is a monoid, then unit :: () -> m join :: (m,m) -> m can be used to form a monad: return is composition: a -> ((),a) -> (m,a) join is composition: (m,(m,a)) -> ((m,m),a) -> (m,a) The dual of () is Void (empty type), the dual of product is coproduct. Every type e can be given "comonoid" structure: unit :: Void -> e join :: Either e e -> e in the obvious way. Now, return is composition: a -> Either Void a -> Either e a join is composition: Either e (Either e a) -> Either (Either e e) a -> Either e a and this is the Either e monad. The arrows follow exactly the same pattern. Question: Is it possible to write a single generic code that will be able to perform both as Either e and as Writer m depending on the monoid given?

And it makes sense that it doesn't point to my instance but how to solve the problem? I want to solve the problem properly I don't want to use something dirty. My thinking: * use a singleton pattern (mouse is only one after all) * pass somehow my instance to OnMouseDown/Up - how? Thank you for help!
