  • How do I get the Mac OS X 'quick look' feature to be more programmer-friendly?

    There are numerous text files that are always included in common downloads such as rails plugins: LICENSE, ChangeLog, Rakefile, etc. I know these files are plain-text, but Mac OS X refuses to acknowledge this automatically. If I hit the spacebar in Finder to activate "quick look", the icon becomes huge but the contents of the file are not shown, presumably because they have no file extension. How do I stop this madness so I can quickly look at READMEs just by hitting the spacebar? I've already got a ton of text editors installed on my mac: this question is purely about efficiency and making simple files accessible as quickly as possible.

    I am using gVim on Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy (yank) text to the system clipboard, so that the copied text is available in other applications. This works with "+y. But I want to have it working with y. I have tried to map y to "+y but then yy doesn't work anymore (since it produces "+y"+y). I have also tried :set clipboard=unnamed but this works only the other direction: Text in the system clipboard I can paste with p.

    I have a list of strings (company names, in this case), and a Java program that extracts a list of things that look like company names out of mostly-unstructured text. I need to match each element of extracted text to a string in the list. Caveat: the unstructured text has typos, things like "Blah, Inc." referred to as "Blah," etc. I've tried Levenshtein Edit Distance, but that fails for predictable reasons. Are there known best-practices ways of tackling this problem? Or am I back to manual data-entry?

    I am saving encrypted data to a database. Is there a way I can create a "hashcode" or fingerprint or checksum of the plain text data, that if I sort / order by on the "hashcode" the order would be the same as if I had saved the plain text data and perform the same sort / order by operation on it? I basically need a SOUNDEX() type function that will give me a value that will maintain the order of the plain text data. I would then save both encrypted data and the "hashcode" and when querying the data order by the "hashcode" field. I need to perform this in the application and preferably not in the SQL DB if at all possible. I am using Entity Framework and SQL 2008 and C# 4.0.

    Is it possible to set a password textbox text to text that the user could not reproduce on their end? Like are there special characters that can only be set from the server? For instance, one way to do this would be to use javascript to prevent typing of *'s, and to set the textbox text to be all *'s. But that's hacky. The motivation is to be able to tell on the server if the user changed the password at all, but not to restrict them from having a password of all *'s, for instance.

  • Scanning FedEx labels into a visual basic program

    I have a program that has tracking numbers entered into it and it stores them in a database and i would like to add a scanner to the mix. The scanner is acting like a keyboard and scannes just fine, the problem is scanning a FedEx number gives a 32 digit number and i am only iterested in the tracking number portion of it. I saw an example on the web for an excel macro and tried to modify it but it doesnt seem to work. Is there something i could do to just get the 12 digit number? This is what it looks like so far.     I have a barcode scanner works as HID device. Everytime a barcode scans it goes directly to windows keyboard, for example if I open notepad I can see the barcode typed there. As far as I know programmatically is it possible to to read HID data from your HID devices. But what happens if the user is already on a form with a text edit control? The scanned code will go inside the text box. Can you block incoming text and make a background-only processing? Can you explain the theory please?

Is this possible, or should I simplify the layout around HTML?

It consists of many segments like this, among other html tags <p>HeadingNumber</p> <p style="text-indent:number;margin-top:neg_num ">Heading Text</p> <p>Body</p> Notice that the heading number and text are in seperate p tags, aligned in a horizontal line by css. the css may be whatever Lucifier fancies, a mixture of indents, paddings, margins and positions. However that line is a single object in my business model and should be kept as such. So How do I detect whether two p elements are visually in a single line and process them accordingly. I believe the HTML files are well formed if it helps.
