  • Setting new class variables inside a module

    - by Sean McCleary
I have a plugin I have been working on that adds publishing to ActiveRecord classes. I extend my classes with my publisher like so: class Note < ActiveRecord::Base # ... publishable :related_attributes => [:taggings] end My publisher is structured like: module Publisher def self.included(base) base.send(:extend, ClassMethods) @@publishing_options = [] # does not seem to be available end module ClassMethods def publishable options={} include InstanceMethods @@publishing_options = options # does not work as class_variable_set is a private method # self.class_variable_set(:@@publishing_options, options) # results in: uninitialized class variable @@publishing_options in Publisher::ClassMethods puts "@@publishing_options: #{@@publishing_options.inspect}" # ... end # ... end module InstanceMethods # results in: uninitialized class variable @@publishing_options in Publisher::InstanceMethods def related_attributes @@publishing_options[:related_attributes] end # ... end end Any ideas on how to pass options to publishable and have them available as a class variable?

  • Django & custom auth backend (web service) + no database. How to save stuff in session?

    - by Infinity
I've been searching here and there, and based on this answer I've put together what you see below. It works, but I need to put some stuff in the user's session, right there inside authenticate. How would I store acme_token in the user's session, so that it will get cleared if they logged out? class AcmeUserBackend(object): # Create a User object if not already in the database? create_unknown_user = False def get_user(self, username): return AcmeUser(id=username) def authenticate(self, username=None, password=None): """ Check the username/password and return an AcmeUser. """ acme_token = ask_another_site_about_creds(username, password) if acme_token: return AcmeUser(id=username) return None ################## from django.contrib.auth.models import User class AcmeUser(User): objects = None # we cannot really use this w/o local DB def save(self): """saving to DB disabled""" pass def get_group_permissions(self): """If you don't make your own permissions module, the default also will use the DB. Throw it away""" return [] # likewise with the other permission defs def get_and_delete_messages(self): """Messages are stored in the DB. Darn!""" return []

  • are Hierarchical SIngletons in Java possible?

    - by Zach H
I've been toying with an interesting idea (No idea if I'll include it in any code, but it's fun to think about) Let's say we have a program that requires a large number of classes, all of a certain subclass. And those classes all need to be singletons. Now, we could write the singleton pattern for each of those classes, but it seems wasteful to write the same code over and over, and we already have a common base class. It would be really nice to create a getSingleton method of A that when called from a subclass, returns a singleton of the B class (cast to class A for simplicity) class A{ public A getSingleton(){ //Wizardry } } class B extends A{ } A blargh = B.getSingleton() A gish = B.getSingleton() if(A == B) System.out.println("It works!") It seems to me that the way to do this would be to recognize and call B's default constructor (assuming we don't need to pass anything in.) I know a little of the black magic of reflection in Java, but i'm not sure if this can be done. Anyone interested in puzzling over this?

  • Grid computing projects similar to NGrid (thread based)

    - by DivdeAndConquer
Hello there, first time poster. This is a great place for reading about programming problems. I've been looking at some grid computing projects for .Net/Mono and stumbled upon NGrid. NGrid seems really appealing for grid computing because you simply pass threads to it and there is very little modification you have to make to your code. However, I see that NGrid (http://ngrid.sourceforge.net/?page=overview) is still at version 0.7 and hasn't been updated since May 2008. So, I'm wondering if there are any other grid computing projects that use a similar thread-passing architecture and if anyone has had success using NGrid.

  • How to create a web framework in C# without ASP?

    - by Mark
I've managed to get a C# asp page running under ubuntu/apache/mono, but I don't want to write my framework in these ASP pages, I want to use straight C# and then I'll use a templating language for my views. But I don't know where to begin? C# is a compiled language, so... how would I do this? Would I compile everything and then have apache hook into the (single) executable and pass in the the request URL? Could I request specific .cs pages and then have apache tell it to compile and then "display" it only if it's been updated? Can the "view" files be compiled individually to avoid having to recompile everything every time there's a change? Is there some "base" I can work from, or am I going to have to reinvent accessing GET and POST variables (by reading header info) and all sorts of other stuff we take for granted in languages like PHP?

  • How do I dynamically change the path_to()?

    - by Angela
I currently have three methods which I want to collapse into one: def send_email(contact,email) end def make_call(contact, call) return link_to "Call", new_contact_call_path(:contact => contact, :call => call, :status => 'called') end def make_letter(contact, letter) return link_to "Letter", new_contact_letter_path(:contact => contact, :letter => letter, :status => 'mailed') end I want to collapse the three into one so that I can just pass the Model as one of the parameters and it will still correctly create the path_to. I am trying to do this with the following, but stuck: def do_event(contact, call_or_email_or_letter) model_name = call_or_email_or_letter.class.name.tableize.singularize link_to "#{model_name.camelize}", new_contact_#{model_name}_path(contact, call_or_email_or_letter)" end

  • What is the universal way to use file I/O API with unicode filenames?

    - by dma_k
In Windows there is a common problem: the filenames should be converted to local codepage, before they are passed to open(). Of course, there is a possibility to use Win32::API for that, but I don't want my script to be platform-dependent. At the moment I have to write something like: open IN, "<", encode("cp1251", $filename) or die $!; but is there any library, that hides these details? I think the local codepage can be automatically detected, so I just want to pass unicode filename and forget about the details. Why is it still not in the box?

  • How to go 'back' 2 levels?

    - by Joe McGuckin
From the list view of my app, I can view a list of records or drill down and edit/update a record. After updating, I want to go directly back to the list view, bypassing a couple of intermediate pages - but I don't simply want to link_to(:action => list) - there's pagination involved. I want to go back to the exact 'list' page I came from. What's the best way? Pass a hidden arg somewhere with the page number? Is there an elegant way to accomplish this?

  • Django: do I need to do HttpResponseRedirect to render a simple string after a POST?

    - by AP257
I've got a mobile app that makes POST requests to a Django site. I want to return a simple string (not a template-based page) after the app makes the POST request, saying 'Success' or 'Failure' as appropriate. However I know that after a POST request in Django you're supposed to do a HttpResponseRedirect. But, do I really need to redirect to another page and write a new function to handle it, all to output a string? And if so, how do I pass the success/failure status of the app in the HttpResponseRedirect, since it's only supposed to take one argument? Thanks!

  • Formal name of Magento’s Class Override Design Pattern?

    - by Alan Storm
Magento is a newish (past 5 years) PHP based Ecommerce system with an architecture that's similar to the Java Spring framework (or so I've been told) One of the features of the Framework is certain classes are not directly instantiated. Rather than do something like $model = new Mage_Foo_Model_Name(); you pass an identifier into a static method on a global application object $model = Mage::getModel('foo/name'); and this instantiates the class for you. One of the wins with this approach is getModel checks a global configuration system for the foo/name identifier, and instantiates the class name it finds in the configuration system. This allows you to change the behavior of a Model system wide with a single configuration change. Is there a formal, Gang of Four or otherwise, name that describes this system/design pattern? The instantiation itself looks like a classic Factory pattern, but I'm specifically interested in the whole "override a class in the system via configuration" aspect. Is there a name/concept that covers this, or is it contained within the worldview of a Factory?

  • bash check if value in list

I've got a script with a variable taken from command line parameters. I want to check if it's value is one of dev, beta or prod. I've got following code snippet: #!/usr/bin/env bash ENV_NAME=$1 echo "env name = $ENV_NAME" ENVIRONMENTS=('dev','beta','prod') if [[ $ENVIRONMENTS =~ $ENV_NAME ]]; then echo 'correct' exit else echo 'incorrect' exit fi When I run my script, it doesn't matter which parameters I pass: ./script.sh beta or ./script.sh or ./script.sh whatever, I always get correct echoed. What is wrong in my script?

  • How to set a predefined value in a form in Rails

    - by marco
So I just got started in Rails, and I'm trying to create an Object (a book_loan in my case) with a Form. The thing is that I get to this form by clicking on a book, so I pass the book_id as a parameter, like localhost:3000/loans/new?id=1. Now I don't want the user to be able to set the book id field in the form, since I already know the id. So my question is how to set the value in the form. I have been trying things like: <% form_for(@loan) do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> ... <%= @loan.book_id = params[:id] %> <%= f.submit 'Create' %> <% end %> without any success. Does anybody have a hint for me?

  • How to test Guice Singleton?

    - by 01
Guice Singletons are weird for me First I thought that IService ser = Guice.createInjector().getInstance(IService.class); System.out.println("ser=" + ser); ser = Guice.createInjector().getInstance(IService.class); System.out.println("ser=" + ser); will work as singleton, but it returns ser=Service2@1975b59 ser=Service2@1f934ad its ok, it doesnt have to be easy. Injector injector = Guice.createInjector(); IService ser = injector.getInstance(IService.class); System.out.println("ser=" + ser); ser = injector.getInstance(IService.class); System.out.println("ser=" + ser); works as singleton ser=Service2@1975b59 ser=Service2@1975b59 So i need to have static field with Injector(Singleton for Singletons) how do i pass to it Module for testing?

  • Why is Rake not able to invoke multiple tasks consecutively?

    - by PandaWood
I have a Rake task which I have simplified below. I'm using Ruby 1.9 on Windows. Perhaps you would like to guess the outcome of calling the Rake task "list_all_levels" below? It should be: "Hello level 1" "Hello level 2" "Hello level 3" But for reasons unknown to me, it prints only "Hello level 1" and then stops. That is, it always invokes only the first task. If I change the first line to pass the arg "42", it would print "Hello level 42" and then stop. I'm wondering why does it not invoke the task 3 times and print all 3 lines? And is there any way to get it to work how I would expect? task :list_all_levels => [] do Rake::Task[:list].invoke 1 Rake::Task[:list].invoke 2 Rake::Task[:list].invoke 3 end task :list, [:level] => [] do |t, args| puts "Hello level #{args.level}" end

  • Is it possible to run node script from a web page as differnt user?

    - by Blame
I'am searching for days now but could not get an answer. I would like to do the following: User connects to editor.html (Apache2 with basic http auth) User want to open a file on the server with his user/pass (same as in passwd) Node.js Script gets startet with user rights from above and user can edit file The Node Script will handly the connection via websockets and read/writes files. I think the biggest problem is that its not possible to run a node script on the server from a web page... and I don´t want to involve any php/cgi scripts... only Apache and Node.js / JS. Please also comment or answer if you know that it is really not possible... Thanks! Kodak

  • [Flash 3d engine] Away3d and events (Basic questions)

    - by Simon
I'd like to play around 3d in Flash and I'm wondering how sophisticated objects can i load from 3D Max... cos as i read it's possible to load something from 3d Max I've read that popular 3d engine is Away3d (many tutorials), so if there is nothing better... i'd like to focus on it. I've forgot to mention that i'm not familar with Flash, but the best way to learn something is to do something interesting with it... :) Main question: Can I load object from 3ds and link parts of this object to some actions in Flash. Better example: I'd like to load a Car and when user click on car's door i'd like to show some informations, about those door, or pass this event outside for example to any other application in PHP, Java etc... and when he click on car mask i'd like to raise other event... Is it possible to create such interaction?? Thx in advance :)

  • Ext.Button handler config option

    - by ppecher
someClass = Ext.extend(someClassB, { _someFunctionC{ someButton = new Ext.button({ handler: function () { this._onClick('click'); } }), _onClick(someMessage){ Ext.Msg.alert(someMessage); } } } _onClick eats one parameter; in the above code you put in the 'click' event because you want _onClick to be executed after the user clicks on the button. However, how do you specify this specific 'click' registration AND pass in a local variable as the _onClick parameter at the same time? As an aside, why do you even have to specify 'click', when the API states that handler always pertains to a click? Is this additional information not unnecessary?

  • MVC - thin controller idea - Codeigniter/Zend

    - by user505988
Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

  • Python sqlite3 and concurrency

    - by RexE
I have a Python program that uses the "threading" module. Once every second, my program starts a new thread that fetches some data from the web, and stores this data to my hard drive. I would like to use sqlite3 to store these results, but I can't get it to work. The issue seems to be about the following line: conn = sqlite3.connect("mydatabase.db") If I put this line of code inside each thread, I get an OperationalError telling me that the database file is locked. I guess this means that another thread has mydatabase.db open through a sqlite3 connection and has locked it. If I put this line of code in the main program and pass the connection object (conn) to each thread, I get a ProgrammingError, saying that SQLite objects created in a thread can only be used in that same thread. Previously I was storing all my results in CSV files, and did not have any of these file-locking issues. Hopefully this will be possible with sqlite. Any ideas?

  • Obtaining kerning information

    - by chadb
    How can I obtain kerning information for GDI to then use in GetKerningPairs? The documentation states that The number of pairs in the lpkrnpair array. If the font has more than nNumPairs kerning pairs, the function returns an error. However, I do not know how many pairs to pass in, and I don't see a way to query for it. EDIT I tried to do the following, however, it still gave me 0. Font* myFont = new Font(L"Times New Roman", 10); Bitmap* bitmap = new Bitmap(256, 256, PixelFormat32bppARGB); Graphics* g = new Graphics(bitmap); SelectObject(g->GetHDC(), myFont); //DWORD numberOfKerningPairs = GetKerningPairs( g->GetHDC(), -1, NULL ); DWORD numberOfKerningPairs = GetKerningPairs( g->GetHDC(), INT_MAX, NULL );

  • Using Java method to display HTML code

    - by javArc
Hey folks, ok so this is my problem, I need to display HTML code in a jsp, which wouldn't be a problem, except a requirement for this project is that we place all the code in a public class file and have seperate methods for each chunk(header, sidebar footer, etc). Now here's where i'm confused: "Your method should take the PrintWriter as a parameter to print out each line of HTML, and should have a return type of void" What does that mean? How do I pass the PrintWriter into a method? Does this make sense to anyone?

  • Is it possible to use Data Annotations to validate parameters passed to an Action method of a Contro

    - by dannie.f
    I am using Data Annotations to validate my Model in ASP.NET MVC. This works well for action methods that has complex parameters e.g, public class Params { [Required] string Param1 {get; set;} [StringLength(50)] string Param2 {get; set;} } ActionResult MyAction(Params params) { If(ModeState.IsValid) { // Do Something } } What if I want to pass a single string to an Action Method (like below). Is there a way to use Data Annotations or will I have to wrap the string into a class? ActionResult MyAction(string param1, string param2) { If(ModeState.IsValid) { // Do Something } }
