  • Computer name not appearing on network

    I can connect to other computers on my home network (ubuntu + OSX machines) using the IP address, but I can't connect using the netbios name. On the mac the name appears in Finder but if I try to connect (goconnect to server smb://[email protected]) it doesn't work, while smb://[email protected] does. Same with ssh, ping and afp between the macs. This is a intermittent problem. It has worked in the past.

    I need to connect my machine to a new domain soon. When I do so a new user profile will be created and I would like to copy all the settings/data from the old profile to the new one. This is a local profile only (no roaming). Running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. I found this previous question on the same topic, it however only seems to address Windows XP and the solutions do not seem to apply to Win7.

    I'm using a D-Link DWR-112 3G router to connect to the internet by using Celcom broadband plug-in. How can I do the port forwarding to my server? I already have correctly configured my DynDNS, but every time the DynDNS will not set to public address but local private address with in the range 10.xxx.xxx.xxx. My router address is 192.168.1.1 and server address is 192.168.1.5. Can someone give me some guideline about this issue?

  • Reattaching screen (having irssi running) forces window resize

    Whenever I reattach to my detached screen (containing Irssi), my Putty screen is resized to something it has been at startup. If I change the window size after this, detach the screen and resize it back, window will be again resized to the original size. By window I mean the Putty window on my windows box. How can I turn this feature off? Using Windows XP as my local and CentOS 6.0 as the remote OS. Putty 0.61.

    Work at a school and we've got a scenario. We block F8 on all computers so students cannot access Safe Mode to bypass Group Policy... But students are logging into their accounts using AD, and they are turning them off half way through. Then they are claiming that when they login next time, they have Local Administrator accounts. Is this right, but we have blocked F8 and Startup repair, so wondering how they actually did it. Cheers Richard

  • Some services refusing to start on Win 7 machine. What could the root cause be?

    When I check msconfig, there are no services that are blocked from starting up. When I look in services.msc, the problem services have a start up type of 'Automatic', but have a blank space where others will show 'Started'. Attempting to start them manually results in the following pop up error messages. I have no idea what's causing this, looks like some sort of cascade effect from another problem service. It's affecting scheduled tasks, SQL server agent and windows back up services. How can I resolve this? I don't know how to work out what the root cause is. Task Scheduler Service Start Error: "Windows could not start the Task Scheduler service on local computer. 1068: The dependecy service or group failed to start. SQL Server Service Start Error: "The SQL Server Agent service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs." UPDATE: I've just noticed some other services have a description of "Failed to Read Description. Error Code: 2" They are: NetMsmqActivator, NetPipeActivator, NetTcpActivator, NetTcpPortSharing UPDATE 2: As joeqwerty says the Event Log service does seem to be the root of the problem. This service will not start either. It fails with 'Error 31 - A device attached to the system is not functioning correctly'. I've tried detaching all devices. I need it to ignore the MX records and only send it to the server I specify but am not sure which files to edit or how to configure the sendmail config. My CentOS machines have as many as six other users that share the systems, but the mpenning userid is the only one that has this issue. Approximately 5% of my logins see this issue, but no other usernames exhibit this behavior. Questions Given the kind of scripts I keep on these systems (which control much of our network infrastructure), I'm a little spooked by this and would like to understand what would cause my logins to occasionally miss source addresses. Is there anything (other than malicious activity) that would reasonably explain the behavior? Other than bash history timestamping, are there other things I can do to track the issue down? Informational Since this started happening, I enabled bash history time-stamping (i.e. HISTTIMEFORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T " in .bash_profile) and also added a few other bash history hacks; however, that does not give clues to what happened during the previous occurrences. I've been working on this now for a few hours (reading manuals and such) so I'm not just coming here right out of the blue. I am working on a PRE-EXISTING Nagios server where there are several other existing plugins and checks running and working. Now I want to add another server there to check so I made the following modifications: First and foremost, I added a file to /usr/local/nagios/libexec named: check_equallogic.sh. The permissions are 755, the same as all others. I have chowned to nagios:nagios and in the listing it shows the Owner as Nagios. I then added a command to the commands.cfg file in \usr\local\nagios\etc\objects that shows the following: # 'check_equallogic' command definition define command{ command_name check_equallogic command_line $USER1$/check_equallogic -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -C $ARG1$ -t $ARG2$ $ARG3$ } Following this, I created a file named equallogic.cfg in the objects directory and it contains (more or less): define host{ use linux-server ; Inherit default values from a template host_name 172.16.50.11 ; The name we're giving to this device alias EqualLogic ; A longer name associated with the device address 172.16.50.11 ; IP address of the device contact_groups admins } Check Equallogic Information define service{ use generic-service host_name 172.16.50.11 service_description General Information check_command check_equallogic!public!info } After ensuring that permissions are okay for all files, I restart the nagios service, no errors. When I go into the WebGUI, I get the following errors AFTER the check runs: (Return code of 127 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing) Extra, probably unrelated problem Furthermore, when I log into the EquilLogic server, under Audit logs I get the following error: Level: AUDIT Time: 26/05/2014 3:59:13 PM Member: ps4100-1 Subsystem: agent Event ID: 22.7.1 SNMP packet validation failed, request received from 172.16.10.11 An snmpwalk receives a timeout, whereas others succeed. I will work on importing the MIBs tomorrow. The reason why I am mentioning it is because I want to make sure that it is only a MIB issue for the SNMP. If it is, then ignore this area. I am entirely unsure of what to do here.

    I'm looking for a tool that is able to (remotely) monitor CPU and Memory in a Windows server but most importantly, which service/process is using it. Or-- is it possible to monitor a specific running service? We got a server that freezes on regular basis and we're trying to find the culprit without using a local debugger. Would be great if the monitoring software came with an agent that we can install on the remote clients for maximum accuracy. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.
