• Google "not selecting" many of the links on my site

  Since a few days I noticed that Google wasn't indexing any of the pages on my site anymore. When I checked the indexingstatus-page I noticed the following: As you can see the "not selected"-line is going thru the roof! The information on google's help pages is very limited: https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=nl&answer=139066 I run a free downloads-site which is automatically updated. I don't have duplicate content (except that sometimes descriptions of software is similar over an older version of the software) and my URL's are all forwarded to the www.-variant from within Wordpress. So the canonical-part that Google mentions in their Help-file, isn't the problem. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to solve it?

• 13.10 doesn't boot on Vaio Pro 13

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my new Vaio Pro 13, disabled safe mode, but used UEFI and not legacy mode. I did an encrypted LVM installation and erased the complete SSD. It booted just fine from USB, but after installation it doesn't boot. The Vaio failed boot screen appears. I then tried this advice here: 13.10 on vaio pro with UEFI sadly it fails for me with "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of /cow." I then tried mounted the encrypted partition with Nautilus and tried this: Cannot update grub with paramters on live USB With /dev/sda2 and then to install GRUB to /dev/sda. Didn't succeed and warned me that the "GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible" What do i have to do, go fix GRUB and be able to boot my finished install? Here's my Boot Repair Log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6386598/ I would really appreciate any help, I'm so happy to finally be able to ditch my big fat Macbook Pro and use Ubuntu on my new, light Vaio Pro, if only I could fix GRUB. best, x

• Why is Ubuntu One slow to sync in 11.10, either backup or any sub-folder contents?

  I have been trying to sync my documents folder of 1.4GB, it still hasn't worked and it has been syncing for a month. The top level syncs, files and folders in the Document folders, but contents of sub-folders just hang. (Gave up and stopped syncing this folder) However,I have tried using the backup facility in 11.10, to backup to Ubuntu One.... I upgraded my HDD space in Ubuntu One. It has been going now for 24hours-ish and only backed up what looks like a couple of percent. (By the way what an excellent idea to backup to Ubuntu One, if only we could get it to actually work! :-o) The odd thing is I can sync to drop box within hours, rather than months. This is bad, and has been an issue since Ubuntu One's release. I have reported this problem and there were promises in later releases this would be fixed, but it hasn't. Canonical cannot help either... I posted on several blogs, a lot of people have the same problem but no fixes. So do I use dropbox or another service, until it is sorted, as Ubuntu does not seem to see this as an issue, I think a fix will be a long time in coming. (However,I love the potential of Ubuntu One and the integration with the OS) Yes my internet speeds are fine, etc... :-) No firewall (sudo ufw status: STATUS: INACTIVE), No Proxy, etc NB: I have raised this as a separate question to others posted here, because my question relates to Ubuntu 11.10, though I have commented elsewhere for help. Plus my question also relates to deja-dup backup to Ubuntu One. Thanks

• Channelling an explosion along a narrow passage

  I am simulating explosions in a 2D maze game. If an explosion occurs in an open area, it covers a circular region (this is the easy bit.) However if an explosion occurs in a narrow passage (i.e narrower than the blast range) then it should be "compressed", so that it goes further and also it should go around corners. Ultimately, unless it is completely boxed-in, then it should cover a constant number of pixels, spreading in whatever direction is necessary to reach this total area. I have tried using a shortest-path algorithm to pick the nearest N pixels to the origin avoiding walls, but the effect is exaggerated - the blast travels around corners too easily, making U-turns even when there is a clear path in another direction. I don't know whether this is realistic or not but it is counter-intuitive to players who assume that they can hide around a corner and the blast will take the path of least resistance in a different direction. Is there a well-known (and fast) algorithm for this?

  When I use the emacs shell mode or in gdb, when I type double tab, the emacs pop up a new window which always cover an existed window. While in terminal, when I type double tab, to complete a directory, the terminal just print all the candidates in the same window. • What tools should I consider if my aim is to make a game available to as many platforms as possible?

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

• Wow, no words enough for my disappointment

  Really cannot describe the disappointment felt at this moment.  A month ago there was rumor out there saying Surface tablet will be around $200.  Even though everybody agreed at the time that's not possible, or fair to Microsoft partners, the expectation was set.According to Paul Thurrott (http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/microsoft-surface-pricing-availability-144526), the tablet starts at $499, but without the keyboard cover (Seriously, this is like offering Lincoln with manual shift).  The more disappointed fact is that there is no version that comes with cellular capability.  I was debating whether to get one, but now that decision is very easy.I'll wait.

• On Golf Tournaments & Installers

  I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. Feedback on the above new tutorial is very welcome, as always.

• Web Services and code lists

  Our team heavily discuss the issues how to handle code list in a web service definition. The design goal is to describe a provider API to query a system using various values. Some of them are catalogs resp. code lists. A catalog or code list is a set of key value pairs. There are different systems (at least 3) maintaining possibly different code lists. Each system should implement the provider API, whereas each system might have different code list for the same business entity eg. think of colors. One system know [(1,'red'),(2,'green')] and another one knows [(1,'lightgreen'),(2,'darkgreen'),(3,'red')] etc. The access to the different provider API implementations will be encapsulated by a query service, but there is already one candidate which might use at least one provider API directly. The current options to design the API discussed are: use an abstract code list in the interface definition: the web service interface defines a well known set of code list which are expected to be used for querying and returning data. Each API provider implementation has to mapped the request and response values from those abstract codelist to the system specific one. let the query component handle the code list: the encapsulating query service knows the code list set of each provider API implementation and takes care of mapping the input and output to the system specific code lists of the queried system. do not use code lists in the query definition at all: Just query code lists by a plain string and let the provider API implementation figure out the right value. This might lead to a loose of information and possibly many false positives, due to the fact that the input string could not be canonical mapped to a code list value (eg. green - lightgreen or green - darkgreen or both) What are your experiences resp. solutions to such a problem? Could you give any recommendation?

• Puppet templates and undefined/nil variables

  I often want to include default values in Puppet templates. I was hoping that given a class like this: class myclass ($a_variable=undef) { file { '/tmp/myfile': content => template('myclass/myfile.erb'), } } I could make a template like this: a_variable = <%= a_variable || "a default value" %> Unfortunately, undef in Puppet doesn't translate to a Ruby nil value in the context of the template, so this doesn't actually work. What is the canonical way of handling default values in Puppet templates? I can set the default value to an empty string and then use the empty? test... a variable = <%= a_variable.empty? ? "a default value" : a_variable %> ...but that seems a little clunky.

  I am working at a localization agency and we have been approached by a client about testing their games on iOS as well as Android. Testing on iOS seems fairly easy as we can just buy a couple of devices and we should be covered. For Android it seems to be completely different. From what i found, the emulator can cover all API levels, screen sizes and such, but i hear it's buggy and nothing could replace testing on real devices. With the vast amount of Android devices out there and the rate at which new devices are released it seems impossible to keep up. How can i test games (localization and functional) on Android covering all compatible devices?

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • Are unit tests really used as documentation?

  I cannot count the number of times I read statements in the vein of 'unit tests are a very important source of documentation of the code under test'. I do not deny they are true. But personally I haven't found myself using them as documentation, ever. For the typical frameworks I use, the method declarations document their behaviour and that's all I need. And I assume the unit tests backup everything stated in that documentation, plus likely some more internal stuff, so on one side it duplicates the ducumentation while on the other it might add some more that is irrelevant. So the question is: when are unit tests used as documentation? When the comments do not cover everything? By developpers extending the source? And what do they expose that can be useful and relevant that the documentation itself cannot expose?

• SSIS 2008 Configuration Settings Handling Logic for Variables Visualized

  There are many articles discussing the specifics of how the configuration settings are applied including the differences between SSIS 2005 and 2008 version implementations, however this topic keeps resurfacing on MSDN’s SSIS Forum. I thought it could be useful to cover the logic aspect visually. Below is a diagram explaining the basic flow of a variable setting for a case when no parent package is involved.   As you can see the run time stage ignores any command line flags for variables already set in the config file, I realize this is not stressed enough in many publications. Besides, another interesting fact is that the command line dtexec tool is case sensitive for the portion following the package keyword, I mean if you specify your flag to set a new value for a variable like dtexec /f Package.dtsx -set \package.variables[varPkgMyDate].value;02/01/2011 (notice the lover case v in .value) You will get errors. By capitalizing the keyword the package runs successfully.
