• Dlink DWA-556 Access point fails to start on 2.6.35-25 while 2.6.35-24 works. How can I do this with >2.6.35-24?

  I'm using hostapd to run an access point with a Dlink DWA-556 wireless N card. However, I can no longer get it to start when I use kernels greater than 2.6.35-24. Here's a log where I ran the uname -a&&hostapd -c <configfile> on the different kernel versions. • Why is mysql unable to configure?

  I try to install mysql-server on my Ubuntu vps server, and it's able to install, but not to configure. • Ubuntu 14.04.1 will not load - stops in tty1

  I was following some "guides" on how to clean my system and have cleaned it so well that it doesn't work anymore. Example: in synaptic, I completely removed all packages in "Not installed: residual configuration" and a ton of other packages I "don't need". I know this has probably been asked a trillion times but I really need to find out how to get back to the working OS I had about two hours ago. One hour of googling has not helped me, so I am asking here. When I start Ubuntu, usually nothing happens for quite some time and then tty1 starts. I can log in normally, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I can do: less /var/log/apt/history.log and get a log, but I don't know how to get started with this...

• Forked-daapd with alternative soundcard

  I am trying to configure forked-daapd on my computer, and everything goes well except that in configuration file I can not set a new value for the line corresponding to soundcard. This is the default code in the config file: #card = "default" I want to use a soundcard called "DG2", which is the soundcard no.1 and has a first device that ALSA recognizes as no.0. So, I change the line to the following: card = "hw:DG2,0" I restart the daapd service and the next time I play a file through iTune remote, I get a message in my server log file saying that it can not play the file because the device is busy. Any change in the device name will return a different error, saying that the device does not exist. I am pretty sure no other uses this external device, and I don't understand why I get this message. I have tried hwplug as well, with no result.

  Google Webmaster Tools shows problems with duplicate title tags under Optimization - HTML Improvements, for example: ???????? Mitsubishi Electric Mr. Slim PC Series PC-3KAKLT (220V) 30000 BTU > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html?category_id=96 These two pages have exactly the same content, a rel-canonical tag is set, and they are (no longer) linked to internally. Additionally, we used the Configuration - URL Parameters setting, to set this parameter to No: Doesn't affect page content about one month ago. However, Google is still showing these HTML improvements (and rankings dropped dramatically). What else can we do here? Best, David

• AFP and SAMBA shares are confusing my MacOS X Lion

  I've setup my file server running ubuntu 12.04 with AFP/Avahi and Samba shares. Simple configuration, nothing too complicated. I've given my AFP machine a different name than %h to avoid confusion when looking into my Finder. However, my mac os lion mbp still confuses the two and the only way to access the AFP shares is via direct connect to IP address. The samba machine name seems to be hardwired to hostname (I can only see that that workgroup can be changed). Is there anything I am missing or obvious that I need to set? • How to Use Steam In-Home Streaming

  Steam’s In-Home Streaming is now available to everyone, allowing you to stream PC games from one PC to another PC on the same local network. Use your gaming PC to power your laptops and home theater system. This feature doesn’t allow you to stream games over the Internet, only the same local network. Even if you tricked Steam, you probably wouldn’t get good streaming performance over the Internet. Why Stream? When you use Steam In-Home streaming, one PC sends its video and audio to another PC. The other PC views the video and audio like it’s watching a movie, sending back mouse, keyboard, and controller input to the other PC. This allows you to have a fast gaming PC power your gaming experience on slower PCs. For example, you could play graphically demanding games on a laptop in another room of your house, even if that laptop has slower integrated graphics. You could connect a slower PC to your television and use your gaming PC without hauling it into a different room in your house. Streaming also enables cross-platform compatibility. You could have a Windows gaming PC and stream games to a Mac or Linux system. This will be Valve’s official solution for compatibility with old Windows-only games on the Linux (Steam OS) Steam Machines arriving later this year. NVIDIA offers their own game streaming solution, but it requires certain NVIDIA graphics hardware and can only stream to an NVIDIA Shield device. How to Get Started In-Home Streaming is simple to use and doesn’t require any complex configuration — or any configuration, really. First, log into the Steam program on a Windows PC. This should ideally be a powerful gaming PC with a powerful CPU and fast graphics hardware. Install the games you want to stream if you haven’t already — you’ll be streaming from your PC, not from Valve’s servers. (Valve will eventually allow you to stream games from Mac OS X, Linux, and Steam OS systems, but that feature isn’t yet available. You can still stream games to these other operating systems.) Next, log into Steam on another computer on the same network with the same Steam username. Both computers have to be on the same subnet of the same local network. You’ll see the games installed on your other PC in the Steam client’s library. Click the Stream button to start streaming a game from your other PC. The game will launch on your host PC, and it will send its audio and video to the PC in front of you. Your input on the client will be sent back to the server. Be sure to update Steam on both computers if you don’t see this feature. Use the Steam > Check for Updates option within Steam and install the latest update. Updating to the latest graphics drivers for your computer’s hardware is always a good idea, too. Improving Performance Here’s what Valve recommends for good streaming performance: Host PC: A quad-core CPU for the computer running the game, minimum. The computer needs enough processor power to run the game, compress the video and audio, and send it over the network with low latency. Streaming Client: A GPU that supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding on the client PC. This hardware is included on all recent laptops and PCs. Ifyou have an older PC or netbook, it may not be able to decode the video stream quickly enough. Network Hardware: A wired network connection is ideal. You may have success with wireless N or AC networks with good signals, but this isn’t guaranteed. Game Settings: While streaming a game, visit the game’s setting screen and lower the resolution or turn off VSync to speed things up. In-Home Steaming Settings: On the host PC, click Steam > Settings and select In-Home Streaming to view the In-Home Streaming settings. You can modify your streaming settings to improve performance and reduce latency. Feel free to experiment with the options here and see how they affect performance — they should be self-explanatory. Check Valve’s In-Home Streaming documentation for troubleshooting information. You can also try streaming non-Steam games. Click Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library on your host PC and add a PC game you have installed elsewhere on your system. You can then try streaming it from your client PC. • How do I pause and resume apt-fast package download?

  I know that in order to speed up apt-get downloads, I can use apt-fast (which uses the aria2c or axel engine - it depends on which one I install during the configuration). But even though it says it can pause and resume downloads, I don't know how to do it, and I can't find any answer online that tells me how to do it. I have no intention of pausing apt-fast update function, I just want the ability to pause the sudo apt-fast install package_name function and resume the downloading of a package in Ubuntu at will using apt-fast (with axel or aria2c) I have seen in some forums that sudo apt-fast update cannot be paused because it requires starting the entire process. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Configuring 12voip with a sip softphone in Ubuntu

  I want to change my work PC to Ubuntu but one thing is in my way... We use 12voip since we didn't find lower calling rates in Europe. The thing is 12voip doesn't have a Linux program :-(. I tried to set it up with instructions from this page (under 'Software configuration') with almost all clients that the software center of Ubuntu offers, but the best results i got to had a lot of echo. Now i must admit this echo exists also with the Windows version of the program, but there- once you use headphones its gone, while on the Ubuntu sip phones it stays and its worst in general. I don't know if my problem has to do with codecs or something else, and i was hoping someone can help check it and tell me which sip phone i can work with, and instructions on how to configure it correctly. Btw i tried Google, and all i could find were questions like mine or similar, no good answers. Thanks!

  I just came across the Caliper project and it looks very nice. Reading the introduction to microbenchmarks, one gets the feeling that the developers would not suggest to use the framework if the benchmark takes longer than a second or so. I looked at the code and it looks like a RuntimeOutOfRangeException is actually thrown if a scenario takes longer than 10s to execute. Could you explain to me what the problems are with running larger benchmarks? My motivation for using Caliper was to compare two join-algorithm implementations. Those will definitely run for quite some time and will do some disk IO, yet running the entire database would make it hard to do the comparison, because the configuration of the algorithms and the visualization of the results would be a pain.

  I had registered a domain at namecheap and forwarded the dns to my host at vps.net. The strange thing is, when I did that the site was showing up. I even uploaded files and everything was displaying correctly on my new domain. Now, it is just the namecheap holding page again. I have no idea why this is happening as I haven't touched the configuration since it was working. Could anyone point me in the right direction? When I enter http://domain.com it redirects to http://www.domain.com and the namecheap holding page is shown. Prior to this domain.com was showing what the host was serving. I am completely lost and have no idea where to start so I'd appreciate any help I can get.

  I have sound juicer installed and I want to rip to vorbis.ogg. Is gstreamer the best encoder for vorbis or is there a better encoding engine I should use. The default gstreamer profile is audio/x-raw-float,rate=44100,channels=2 ! vorbisenc name=enc quality=0.5 ! oggmux I am going to raise the quality to 0.7 but thats all nothing if gstreamer isn't the best encoder. Any suggestions for high quality ripping? Edit: a good answer to this will also be the top search result in google for "best vorbis encoding engine". Double Edit: It appears oggenc itself is the best encoder which rules out using sound juicer to rip cd's as it uses gstreamer. I have installed oggenc and am testing the command ripper abcde.
